Wasn't expecting a 27 minute advert from DJjjjjjjjjjj Slooooppe! no disclosure, fake reactions, and selling streaming off as gaming preservation is just a lie.
ho do you feel about the Completionist Open Hand fund non-donation ? And how they finally did something once there were pressure put on them from Karl Jobst & Mutahar? And how the accounting is shady as F and still warrants audit by the iRS.
Left a general comment to give some feedback but wanted to chine in on Video Game Preservation. VGP is very important to me. Physical media is very important to me. Authenticity is everything. I love emulation and believe in its value. Streaming is a worthy option. BUT IT SHOULD BE AN OPTION NOT THE ONLY STANDARD! These types of services gate keep gaming around a monthly (or lifetime aka when the license expires or the servers die) subscription service. The service is only as good as your internet connection and the licenses on the company books. No authenticity other then they paid a suit some dollar. Don't mind ads really don't mind ads at all. But crap ads I kinda get bothered by. No disrespect intended. Just disappointment to vent.
This service is for the casual players, not everyone can wrap their head around emulation so this is one of the options without fuss. It might not benefit preservation, but it might get more people to care for it and grow the community.
There's an obvious difference. Antstream is paying him money. Hope they paid a lot because I Feel this really shot his credibility. If he did an ad that would be one thing. Blatantly lying and then claiming this as preservation. It's a bad look.
Stadia was pushing modern games. Which is alot of data to stream vs this is just old arcade games. It's called game preservation this is a legit service.
@@shadednights6870 No, when the server goes down these games go away. That's not game preservation, that's just a way for a company to profit and pretend they're preserving games. When your using a service, whether it be this, Stadia, or even Steam. That's a delivery service. It's NOT preservation because the minute they are gone, your access is terminated and even if you have "licenses" you can't use them for anything. The amount of data that is streaming isn't the problem, the fact that this is a service contract, not access to the game itself is.
Retro games are small enough that they can be stored in a tiny amount of RAM. A system can be built where the games don't even get saved to any permanent storage. Running games locally has a huge latency advantage over encoding gameplay to video, transmitting that video, then decoding that video.
This is a stupid thing to classify as preservation or forever membership, If it is streaming only it isn't for life and it isn't preserving anything. Both of those things require downloads or hard copies and neither of those can be certain to last for life. If their storage gets fried, goes down or you lose internet say goodbye to all of this. I wish people would stop shilling this non-ownership model.
Hey. I'm not gonna hammer this because SGR's community is making their opinions known in the comments. I agree wholeheartedly with all of them. To Dan/DJ Slope: Watch your video back. There are some clumsy slips of the tongue and a real howler where you talk about input lag then, after a pause of consideration, proclaim "there just isn't any". Your Elevator Action Returns Jetpack score was done three years ago apparently according to your placement on the leaderboards. Ouch... I respect your work, your style, your on screen presence. You deserve your place in RU-vid stardom. Do ads. Do product placements. Do sponsorships. But don't try and 'connect' them with your community because they'll see right through you. Watch other sponsorship and ad vids. Some are shameless and some keep it professional and on point. As the commenters have stated they understand you've gotta provide for your family and your future. But... Well I hope this kinda thing isn't your future on RU-vid. All the best and keep on keeping on. Sorry for being neggy but... You get the point...
@@darinherrick9224 Of course not, but it's just a fucking waste of energy with no benefit at all. Quite the opposite, streaming is worse than running emulation locally in every way.
I miss the days when you did actual gaming retrospectives. Antstream suffers from the same issue that other cloud gaming platforms like Xbox Cloud, OnLive, Gaikai, PlayStation Now, Google Stadia, GeForce Now and others do. Massive input latency, video/audio quality issues, disconnects and an overall experience that's vastly inferior to even playing on an inaccurate and buggy emulator. Not to mention that using a service that broadcasts a live HD video feed of an emulated 70's, 80's or 90's retro game where the actual rom is likely just kilobytes in size is incredibly wasteful. It reminds me of when NCSoft paid WoW streamers like Swifty and Quin69 to stream Lineage II Revolution, forgetting that the game was so boring, monotonous and dull that they immediately ditched it the moment the sponsor money ran dry.
it's just an ad, no need to take it as seriously really. he does plenty of great videos and I don't see anything wrong with making these sponsored videos at all as long as it's stated and clear
Slope, you used to warn me about stuff like this. What's going on man? You're not going bankrupt are you? I hope you go back to your roots and put stuff like this behind you.
@@Lost_n_Found_1Lifetime isn't really lifetime. Dan clearly said no obvious input lag (OMG). Play legally? Yeah until the license expires... Maybe there is a better way to word it or frame it but... Scam is not that far off... But for legal reasons we'll say not 100% accurate due to cultural and technical differences.
In respect of the thumbnail, this should definitely not be the future of retro gaming. Besides, you are never going to get the likes of Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgehog on Antstream. Plus games can be taken off Antstream without a moments notice. No thanks.
Agreed in terms of retention. The only way to really preserve games is to own the cartdridge and or rom (and even have backups of that too). As we've seen from many platforms, games just vanish or even the whole service gets shuts down *cough, Nintendo. You can't rely on online services at all for the long term!
This is just a shameless 26min advertisement for an emulation streaming service, a proposition that doesn't make any sense. Why would you stream games that are at most a few MB in size? And as others have said, I don't see how this helps preservation. You have to pay the bills, we get it. Play ads, have sponsorships, no problem. But don't mix the two Especially, don't make an entire video to advertise a product that you might have otherwise properly criticized. That's called conflict of interest. And it's not honest work. I would have liked to think this was still genuine, but with your recent behaviour, and especially the extreme clickbait on your shorts, I'm done with this channel. My individual sub won't matter, I know, but be careful, you may be losing more than you're getting out of these deals in the future. People are starting to be fed up with your BS (let's call things what they are)
For life? So can I just download these games right off the service to be able to play them without worrying about if the server goes down then? Because if not, that's just the service's lifetime, and it does not help games preservation in the slightest.
no need! he’s got paid, he no longer needs to pay attention to this. i wonder if he’ll bother to do those challenge videos he mentioned. certainly won’t be showing off any midway games if he does, they’re getting delisted
@@EmberMcLain87 yep, not only is the service just an outdated "Google stadia" which didn't work but the video itself is a complete sell out. This channel has always been fair and honest with balanced reviews... But this video is a complete 180 and just a long paid advertisement which fake excitement for a poor product and service.
I think this video would have been better if it started with better framing. For instance, not around the idea of preservation. but more immediately clear that this streaming service can offer tons of potential value or something else.I think your community is still perfectly willing to accept a video watching you stream this kind of content, even in a positive framing. hell, even as an ad. but this started out creating a tone that makes the rest of the video feel disingenuous.
Slopes jumped the shark. I love his content. But im a physical kind of guy. If i can buy a physical copy of a game i buy it. If i cant then i might not waste my money. A digital future sucks
FUN FACT: Shiny Entertainment's MDK (Murder Death Kill) was the first video game to feature a zoomable sniper scope. Both 007: Goldeneye and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II came out the same year (1997) and also featured sniper scope weapons, but MDK beat them to the market by a good few months. I remember that because there was quite the hoopla about MDK's sniper scope back in a preview issue of PC Gamer at the time.
I think the core concept behind Antstream is flawed to begin with. I get wanting to stream big AAA releases (at least on paper), but streaming 8-bit/16-bit retro games that aren't even a single megabyte in size seems like offering a solution to the problem that doesn't exist.
I get you gotta keep the lights on with a bit of advertising but this just feels a bit gross dude. I'd take a Raid Shadow Legends plug over something like this.
I get it, you're just trying to keep the lights on, I respect that. I won't be purchasing this service as I know better than to believe "forever" when something is streamed. If it were offering games to be downloaded locally, that'd be something different.
We see many devices coming out of China with hundreds/thousands of games that patently breach copyright protection that any reasonable person can see. When you look at the amount of games over the many systems that Antstream offers, despite the claims that they are licenced, it must be reasonable to ask whether all the legal requirement are in place. It may well be that some are/were always freeware but there are many titles in here that were definitely paid for content back in the day. So has Slopes seen documentation to prove the legitimacy of this service? The UK does have a reputation of rather harsh punishments for copyright violation, so it should be in the best interests of all to not only have legitimacy but to be able to see it. Signing up to a service that is not legally covered also makes customers accessories under the law.
First, it's a steaming service, not a device. So this isn't some bootleg console from China. Think of it more like Netflix, Disney Plus, etc where you need to download the required app to run it. Technically a game would only be freeware if the IP License holder says so. I'm too lazy to check, but I don't think any Anstream games on the list are freeware, and all have a IP License Holder. Antstream are also a official registered business, where their HQ is in England. So this isn't some dodgy company. The whole point of this steaming service is to provide an easy to play retro games, while also paying the IP License Holders. I'm no expert on how this works, but I suspect they have to pay a yearly fee, and the people paying the subscription fees help pay them (the same way as any streaming service). Now if they were using games they don't own, don't you think the original IP License Holders would have made a fuss and had the service shut down? I'm very confident Anstream can easily prove they can use the required games (they have an e-mail address is you want to ask).
@@RadioTailsBut how can you be so confident? No trolling. Serious question. If Antstream are playing the licensing game legit then there is a TON of curation and admin processes to keep on top of. Consider all the license agreements, contract lengths, entitlements, technical considerations. It's a legal minefield. UK law isn't as tight as it appears. Especially with entities like Companies House. Take a look at their own record keeping policies on their own website for confirmation of that. The OP had made a valid point.
I worked there briefly a little while ago. I'm not clear on exactly what their licensing situation was, but I know there was a bunch of games we wanted to put up but couldn't cos of licensing reasons, so take that as you will. They're a small company but seem legit; they paid their invoices on time at least.
@@GarrWolfdog Much respect on sharing that. For me, on paper, the service makes sense for the right person. But I'm just not a fan of some of the claims made and it's definitely NOT lifetime. If it's marketed without the unrealistic claims I'd probably give it a shot myself because it's nice to dip into and out of some classics. The idea I can chuck my phone to my young boys and let them have a go on a racer is appealing. If Dan/DJ Slope come at it from a 'best use case' scenario then fair play. But it's all a bit wayward and slack. All the best!
@gamesbloke yeah, the "lifetime" label rings a bit hollow these days, considering how many platforms we've seen come and go in recent years. But I'd still say the platform is worth a look. It's not hugely my thing, tbh, but for a bit of casual nostalgia, it's quite impressive.
I've tried it and payed for a month. Its okay if you have a good setup and fast internet, then its very playable. However when I moved from my Desktop PC (with LAN internet) to my Mac Air, the games became basically unplayable, dropped inputs and the resolution would go from like 720p to 144p every 10 seconds. Was kinda a shame because the whole point for me was having the games in a convenient way to play them. I don't really need another subscription to play games on my Desktop that I can just emulate for free, and the emulators will also play the games better anyways.
I like the idea of Ant Stream, but the fact that you play remotely rather than download games that are often 2MB or less seems extremely backwards and cumbersome. Like, just download the game to your phone's RAM and delete it when you close the app. Way less data usage for them and us, and it'd eliminate input lag.
The powerhouse Saturn delivers a powerful rendition of Loaded. Being a Saturn fanboy this is a true and factual statement and you must believe it! Except don't because whilst the 2D art is technically superior the 3D models and lighting are inferior to the PSX and the load times are longer... Still Saturn is pure BOSS!
I can not understand with emulation available free, why would anyone pay? And you can get everyone of the arcade games. As for the ethics of piracy they are arcade Roms that are not really used anymore, so personally I don't see the harm I do still go to the arcade pay the £17 and play all day on the cabinets make a day of it. As for the home the £80 you pay thee is no guarantee the servers will stay up for a lifetime. If it's not viable then how they going to pay for the server time? Then you loose that's the problem with digital and streaming. You don't own you pay to rent. I've tried it and there is a lot of lag especially on fighting games and shooters where lag is very important when they get games like streetfighter 2, turbo ect.. it will be impossible
@@shadednights6870 I don't think for your own use or the fact you own the game is Illigal. Profiting from it certainly is. It's a grey area as far as I am aware. Even so in the real world ROMs are so easily available anyone with a business head I. Their shoulders should realise this and an already closed community so that's a restriction in sales to start with, and the fact it's so easy to do it free and no one cares as it's for personal use. There is no money to be made and no money for growth.
‘literally forever’ lol and also lmao do ads all you want but being deceitful like this- promising it’s forever when we all know it’s on a time limit, presenting the thumbnail like it’s a real video and not an extended advert- only engenders bad sentiment as a look at the comments shows (good on all of you taking him to task on this) also calling one of the alien breed games ‘a tower defense game’ has big ‘i looked at the title of one of them and just assumed’ energy
The two games that got me to want a PlayStation 1 or when it was called the original PlayStation when I bought mine were; wipeout, and L.A.P.D. the mech game. After that I went down the rabbit hole of games released on that system like need for speed 1 and ridge racer type 4 and of course Spyro, and final fantasy 7.
I can appreciate the convenience of having it all there, but we've all seen games get delisted, altered music in collections and online versions, and providers go out of business. It all happens. It will likely happen again. If a person has no space for a physical collection, it might be worthwhile.
I like classic games but I don't like subscription services. Fortunately for me, I already have most of the 16-bit era games featured in this video on one or another physical media game collection and/or mini-console.
Slope man, are you shilling, now? Yeah, 79.99 forever, or until they shut down, whichever occurs first. Being dependent upon any service to access music, movies, games, or whatever is a mistake. Oh, and those are an awful lot of copyright owners to track down and negotiate with for a streaming service. I wonder if they have the rights. I'm not buying this. This video should have never been made. I respect and like you, man, but sometimes i wonder about your judgment, which your enthusiasm seems to override. I STILL don't understand why anyone would have wanted to buy an Amico, even back at the beginning, and I collect video games. Why did you want one? I'm still subscribed, but I am disappointed in you right now.
@@TOOTKS I'm not saying it was the same company. I'm just saying that I was excited to see a video from one of my favorite RU-vid people, and it was basically a big ad
While I like these games a lot, I get that they might've asked you to push the forever line a few times and from what we've seen from you, you also know that isn't true. It just feels disingenuous coming from you and what your content has often been about.
I don't think my subscription means much to you but, I've unsubbed anyway, hopefully you'll get back on track mate and not do things like this anymore.
It's OK. This is a good way to try a game before you buy a physical copy. There's a value to having bug fixes, etc.but with ongoing lawsuits, retroactive censorship, etc. the physical copies (WHEN POSSIBLE) are my preferred just to preserve what originally was without compromise.
@@ianfisch7289No.. But that's what happens nowadays when retro games are re-released. So many games have disclaimers saying the game doesn't reflect modern attitudes or they straight up censor or cut it out. By way of an example: Sega Mega Drive games on the Genesis/Mega Drive Collection from a few years back have artwork changes to reflect cultural changes in society. What the hell for? At least give an option to keep the original aesthetic. They didn't even give a disclaimer. Authenticity is key! And the preservation of the original experiences is key! These services dilute and compromise that with patches and supposed bug fixes.
@@trailersicYes, but even with ROMs, if you like something enough I'd go out and snag a physical copy. If you're in a small apartment that can be a huge deciding factor, though.
Where is earth worm Jim? I bought it for that game specifically and I can’t find it. It’s in the trailer. If it’s not in the game but in the trailer that’s false advertising
I'm a super big fan of Antstream but I'm bummed at how quickly they're losing games and not addressing it. Warner is gone so Mortal Kombat, Robotron and Smash TV are all off the list and Antstream at least made a video discussing that situation but they've lost another 100 games since (including the Earthworm Jims).
ho do you feel about the Completionist Open Hand fund non-donation ? And how they finally did something once there were pressure put on them from Karl Jobst & Mutahar? And how the accounting is shady as F and still warrants audit by the iRS.
What is this, a stream for ANTS?!?!!?!!! No, honestly, it looks fine for those who are too baby-fied to use emulators. Its just not for me because I'm larger than an ant, and jumping in an Ant Stream would probably cause a tidal wave, displacing many happy ant families, and i don't want their blood (ichor?) on my hands.
I have purchased antstream for Xbox twice in the past. I had to request a refund both times as after the splash screen, all it would show was a blue screen. Unfortunately there was no way I or anyone on the antstream discord could figure out how to pass that screen. Shame really as I have a few projects coming up that would benefit from antstream.
That lifetime subscription doesn't seem a very good money maker for a sustainable business long-term as the money will dry up pretty quickly when the limited customer base all have it and the company still have to pay for the bandwidth/servers and licences year on year. And whats the point of streaming the games with all the horrible lag and visual glitches when that lifetime fee should just let you have the rom locally? You have it for life according to them so why not? The entire thing has a whiff of scuminess about it and I doubt they will last long. Also, this video comes across like one of those infomercials on a shopping channel and definately stretching the truth in parts (no lag whatsoever? unless they broke the laws of physics thats a flat out lie). I like this channel but some of the videos he puts out are borderline deceitful and do his credibility no favours whatsoever.
Everyone shiting on this name anywhere else you can play these games without illegal rom downloads or spending out the ass for physical copies. Around 80 dollars for a life time service yeah if even if it was only around for 10 year's or so its still a great deal for people interested in retro games. Input lag wise these games streaming takes less than playing a modern game online. Don't trash something unless you've tried it.
