Long video alert! In the UK the new drone restrictions are limited for all drones over 249g meaning the DJI Mavic mini / Mini 2 are now the go to drones! but what about older drones such as DJI Mavic Air 2 or the Mavic 2 pro or DJI Phantom?Before you take your A2 CofC in this video I talk all about flying clubs and how to make use of the CAA CAP722 article 16 authorization allowing closer flights and more flexibility flying your larger drone in the UK in places you did not think possible!

Great news Gavin, I used to be a member of BMFA in the 70s when I used to belong to the Ipswich model club! building and flying fixed wing aircraft, I took the ‘B’ certificate and used to help out with the learners and get them airborne! And in those days we were covered up to 1 million pounds! so I may get in touch with the BMFA as I still have the Mavic Pro with very few miles on the old gal! Great video, keep up all the good that you do for this wonderful hobby! 👍 and I’ve already paid my £9.00 and took the CAA test! So this makes sense to me !

Thanks Gavin, your video has helped me understand a little more of the somewhat complicated drone flying regs. I have a Mavic air 2, have been a member of FBV UK since March and passed the A2 CofC. All my flying experience I would class a recreational and don't plan to do commercial work. My primary interest using the drone is to extend my photographic opportunities. Your video has cleared up some misunderstanding for me about what distance I can legally fly from uninvolved people and where I can take off and given me a bit more confidence if challenged. I need to read article 16 a little closer and listen again to your excellent video. Keep em coming Thanks

@@GAVINHR Great stuff, looking forward to the video. I wonder if you could clear something else up for me. I spoke to a park ranger who works for the local authority and ask him if I could take off from council owned land in an area of open park land close to my house to film a local monument. He said no one is allowed to take off from council owned land with prior permission which he said would be very unlikely to be granted. There is a housing estate close to the field and a road. The large open space parkland field is used by walkers and often there is no one on the field. Does article 16 allow me to take off from this land ? thanks

Well done Gavin a good informative video that helps to explain the Article 16 loophole. The PLI bonus is attractive for sports photographers like me, but then I can't fly over crowds or at sports events anyway with the M2! The Mini was made attractive to me as an introduction to drones by its price, quality and for the ability to fly almost 'anywhere' , the Air 2 was always going to be the next step up, like it was for you. Keep up the good work with the vids, you are doing a great job of educating a lot of us regarding drones 👍.

Great video and very informative. Good to know I don't have to get rid of my Anafi, I love flying it, even though I have the Mini 2. Outside my front door is nothing but miles of open fields and I've used the drone to video the area as it's the south side of the town where I live. However that is now illegal with the Anafi, so annoying. So even with this membership it wouldn't help, although I really think it's worth it, so I will look into it.

You're most welcome David - I know the video is long but there is a lot to cover ! So much of it is common sense however as you have seen and most of it such as the Operator I.D is already on place so it's not much to do. Well technically using article 16 you can fly as close as 30m to the built up area even if you can't go over it so it may be still useful in some way

I've been flying model aircraft for 78 years, R/C models for 67 years and helicopters for 46 years without any of this regimentation. Why make comon sense so complicated. The powers that be can't find a way of defining the difference btween an aircraft and a drone, so they are all drones. Currently, I have one model weighing over 250 grm, an ancient C/L model which was last flown in 2007. Possesion of it now becomes a crime.

I’m a A2 CofC operator, and have a inspire 1 V2 which I love to bits. Unfortunately it’s a legacy drone over 2kg, so I can’t use it for commercial operations....very annoying !! At the time of purchase it was a considerable amount of money, I’ve added to it over the years with an X5 plus extra batteries !!! But I don’t want to say goodbye yet! so A16 buys me time 👍 I’m new to RU-vid as a radio ham operator, my inspire will be coming out with me when lockdown ends. Great vid keep them coming.
@HellbellyUK
@HellbellyUK 3 года назад
There's nothing to stop you using the Inspire commercially because of its status as a Legacy Drone (technically it's an "A2 Transtitional Drone" if its 2kg or less flying weight, it doesn't become a "Legacy Drone" until 2023. Being able to fly commericaily without a PFCO is a blanket thing now across the spectrum of drones.

Over here in Au before drones became mass produced, one of my mates used to import parts and make his own drones. At this time there were no rules or regulations and it was more a gentleman's agreement to not fly over people or interfere with others, it was like an enthusiasts thing. As soon as drones became commercial then the antics followed, low flying over beach crowds, flying over neighbours homes and stuff, then the restrictions and regulations came and now you don't see any more drones except an occasional RU-vidr looking for sharks over the ocean

Brilliant video. You've allayed a lot of people's fears, it's not complicated and the rules are not as restrictive as people imagine. We are lucky to live in a country where the CAA have made it much easier to fly than in so many others. Your point about insurance is well made. Take a look at the Good2Go check on the Drone Scene app to find out where you can fly a particular model of drone under Article 16. The app has loads of other useful information on it. Great video Gav. As I’ve commented before I can’t believe how many drone flyers haven’t woken up and smelled the coffee yet. I’ve been with FPV UK for years, it’s worth the cost for the liability insurance alone, never mind the support, exemptions and voice with CAA. That said, I’m hoping not too many realise, I’m hoping to find a reasonably priced used Mavic 2 pro or zoom in a couple of months 🤣.
@pixusphotographic

One of the problems is most people are not aware there are any rules when they buy a drone. They don't think of what can go wrong or safety issues. They just think, how high and how far can they fly then stick it on RU-vid because they think its cool which gives out false messages to people so they feel they can do the same. I signed up with CAA and took the test and I didn't even own a drone at the time, so I knew I would be legal by the time I bought one. The more risks people take, the more restrictions will be added and screw up our hobby. I signed up with FPV UK mainly for the insurance. It really helps when you want permission to fly an area when they know your covered. Hope you get your Mavic 2 pro.

To fly under Article 16 you do need to do a risk assessment on each occasion, even if it is the same location etc... Even if the conditions etc are the same you still need to do the assessment to be able to fly under it as it is part of the requirements. (With other words, the risk assessment has to be for the current flight you are making, if you would happen to be stopped and asked for the documentation.)

@@johndukes869 If you go with BMFA you actually upload the risk assessment and they keep it archived for you. FPV UK don't have this requirement or function so you would keep it yourselves. How long you have to keep it for audit purposes isn't mentioned anywhere that I can see. However, generally Risk Assessment has to be kept for 5 years. (But that is just in most other fields that deal with risk assessments such as HSE etc) Someone else may know how long they need keeping in this particular case though... Hi John, nope that's all you need to do - you CAN do their test when you sign up but it's not mandatory! However if do it just to tick it off the list!

You can still use them for normal flying - it's only if you are using the article 16 authorisation ( ie flying within 30m of people )

Wow Gavin.... I'm almost speechless hey... All these rules and regulations and exceptions and wow, I'm just wowed! You need like so many things just to fly a drone, wow.. I really really hope that this doesn't happen here in Bulgaria also.. This would just ruin the whole experience for me personally.. Having so many rules and regulations and needing Operator ID and Drone ID and probably also your own personal ID, LOL, that's crazy bro.. So much rules and regulations is honestly scary.. Do you have any idea how they will enforce the rules and regulations, like how will they catch the people who break the rules!? I know you said that you have to report everything that happenes like incidents and stuff.. But if I crash my drone into a car that was on the main road I'm not sure if I wanna go there and get beaten up or something... Lol. Very scary stuff hey.. Me gonna fly my Mavic Mini and my Mini 2 now... Finally some day flights, I have so many night flights to upload still... Sweet Keep well and be safe Gavin! 😁🇧🇬🛸

Great informative video gav. Hard to appreciate the complexity of new upto date regulations that came into force beginning of this year. Some die hards are not interested in these as they are obviously above the new regulations. But at the end of the day these drones are massed produced now compared to years ago and fly in the skies in there thousands each day so some legislation needs implementing to help with risks involved.cheers 👍
@GAVINHR
@GAVINHR 3 года назад
They are very complex - but most of it is common sense and these regs and rules for A16 look scary but in fact most of them you do yourself on a daily basis anyway ! I agree with you, there are also those that will have no regard for the rules or even be aware of what's needed but hopefully at least this video will give people the knowledge to fly safely and give themselves more flexibility and not write off the old drones just get

So article 16 still means no overflying over a house even at 50m plus altitude? That can still be difficult to move around. I really want to get a mavic 2 pro bit I feel I’ll have to drive miles to fly it 😢
@GAVINHR
@GAVINHR 3 года назад
Sadly yes this is the case for overhead flights but I mean seriously when the weather is nice pop out and fly for 30m away you will see it's more than close enough in most cases, any sort of green space you are more then 30m away from people anyway it just means you can't take off from your back garden like you can the mini but since the bigger drones are so much more capible it's worth it
@mikee130274
@mikee130274 3 года назад
@@GAVINHR I understand taking off from my garden but what if I have to overfly a house to get somewhere. Is that a no go?
@GAVINHR
@GAVINHR 3 года назад
You could argue according to the rules it's a no go, but you could also argue that if you read it carefully if you can overfly over people at a height of 30m and it would be fair to assume people inside that house would be protected should the drone fall then if it's a singular house and not a built up area then I can't see a problem at all

@@GAVINHR thank you mate. Love your videos and you showed a good demo of the mavic 2. It’s a great drone. I live this hobby but it’s very difficult with people’s conceptions of drones. I have a zoom meeting with the local Paris where I live regarding drones. They’re out of date and out of touch and placed a blanket ban on ALL drones in their recreational parks 🤦‍♂️

Just take off from outside the park and fly into it, there is absolutely nothing wrong as they don't own the airspace. People are so anti drone but they don't know why half of the time. Thanks for the compliment I hope you find it useful

@GAVINHR 3 года назад
Hi Richard, you can fly in a built up area providing the area you are flying in IE a park for example is primarily used for recreation. If you so this in a built up area you DO need to a risk assessment however the separation distances is 30m and 15m for take off and landing and of course you can over fly with A16. However if the area isn't considered a built up area and is in an open area ( you could argue a beach for example isn't built up ) then no risk assessment is needed. Hope that helps

This is too dense for Sunday :). Just joking. Reminds me of. Here are the rules. If you don't like them don't worry. Here are some more rules that will help you avoid the first set of rules.... This is how in 2025 people will become pilots for BA. They started flying mavic air and kept learning the rules and qualifications and now they are flying across Atlantic :). Hope that makes someone smile.

It's very very dense! And it's so long! I filmed it twice but still ended up at 30mins as there's too much detail to get in. Most of it is common sense and basically a quick risk assessment and you can use the bigger drones in more places where people dont think they can!

Really, the rules say don't fly under any psychoactive substances!!! I smoke Marijuana every day, like 3 times a day at least.. But it's for a medical condition... So it's not like you've ever seen me flying irresponsibly or so I think, lol... So is there any leeway for people like me who smoke weed every day for medical reasons!? Im sure if they speak with me and they see how I fly and how I am in real life they'll be fine with it all... I really really hope they have leeway for some people.. Of course I'm not talking about getting smashed and flying! Just being normal and flying... Lol. Sweet Keep well and be safe Gavin! 😁🇧🇬🛸

You certainly fly very well! but yes the rules actually state that! crazy eh! I don't think there would be any provisions made - but to answer your other comment at the same time - what authorities are actually going to police this ? personally I htink none. In the UK right now the only people that seem to care are the drone flyers themselves and reporting things

@@GAVINHR that's cool, so the drone community is kinda doing the policing! They report to the UK's CAA right!? So I think that I'll just stick to my Mavic Mini and my Mini 2 and enjoy flying those for now.. Maybe I'll get a small HS 170 for indoors to try FPV but I'm not really into FPV so...
