I own a Leica M240 and loving it. It’s a fun camera that takes me back to the days I shot medium format film.

I have the MP version of that, and I love it. I also noticed something one time, the battery life is aaammmaaazing! quick story... I also have a fuji film xh1 with the grip in total three batteries. after a wedding job I charged all of them. The Leica batterie was also fully charged. Now, at that time I was (and still am from time to time) into using film, so I didnt use my digital cameras for at least three month. One day I wanted to go out and taking some pictures and I took the Fuji Camera, I turnd it on and it didT work because the batteries where all dead. then I checked the Leica one, and even after three month of not using it, it was still on 80%. Not bad for a 10 year old batterie.

YES! I took my M240 on a 4 day trip and actually left the second battery at home. I just use the VF only and have all the settings on the lowest/ powersave levels, and it lasts forever. A massive advantage of having an OVF and 24mp sensor.

It's a get-it-done camera. The M9 is Kodachrome, the M240 is Agfachrome which was the better film. And battery life, very good. All in all a good camera.

Yes. Its hard to beat when you consider that it's a 24 mp full frame sensor.

@@oh_aces24mp is plenty resolution! What really surprises me is the image quality and latitude of the raw files for post processing. The quality doesn't come through until you see it in the computer. The screen on the camera is shit lol but as expected for a camera this old. What is your go to lens to pair with this camera? Mine is the Voigtlander 35mm f1.2, it's a gem of a lens and works well for film too.

There is a reason they are so expensive otherwise other companies would make cameras as good. Low batch, tight tolerances, lots of hands on labor, best materials and a company that compensates their employees a liveable wage. Thanks for the info and good video.

I have to agree to a degree, however the more i experience using and handling these types of things, the "german engineering" mythos which demands such a premium price tag starts to fall away. Leicas really do seem more and more like luxury mechanical watches, specifically when it comes to the price tag. Also, not to get in to politics, but the german worker isn't doing so hot lately.

I loved my black paint 240, but traded it for my M10-D. I made the right choice for me, but I sometimes miss that thic beauty.

Does anyone else feel like the M-240 was built better compared to the newer Ms of today?

Yes. And in a pinch it's a deadly weapon.

My first Leica camera was the M240 which I got 7 yrs ago. I also have a M10-P but I prefer the warmer colors of the 240 and of course the battery life. I think the 240 is the best value M camera you can get now and is actually my travel camera cause I use the video feature time to time. It is great with today's stabilization tech. Also people who say they shoot Leica for the colors... I think they are delusional The colors are mid and does require editing also the build quality of the Leica lenses aren't as great as other would say. My Voigtlander lenses feel more solid and tactile than my Leica lenses. My 35 Lux FLE already has paint chips on the makers and some play in the aperture rings. I noticed this is common in most Leica lenses.
@crispin8888
@crispin8888 5 месяцев назад
Agreed ! The M240 was my first Leica, and remains my favourite digital camera. Modern Leica aperture rings are mostly annoyingly loose.
@oh_aces
@oh_aces 4 месяца назад
Yes. Leica colors aren't the best, but in some cameras like the SL they are great SOOC but I still edit everything a little bit.

@oh_aces

On film I cant complain at all. There is vignetting and some distortion on digital, but that's not issue if you edit even a little bit. Sharp wide open, and good colors. I really think they're an essential part of an "affordable" M kit.

People talk about the colour of a digital sensor as if it was produced by some kind of magic formula. I have a couple of older CCD cameras from Nikon and Olympus. Yes they produce more saturated and vivid colour out of the camera compared to a CMOS but, I am limited to how much I can do with them in post. My M240, Nikon D810 and other cameras have much more scope for manipulation in post. Just take a look at the photographs produced for glossy fashion magazines by Nikon, Canon an dother CMOS sensor cameras. Did the editor threw them all out because they produced less exciting colour? The M240 is a great camera and the sooner people stop talking nonsense about it the better. As I recall the very same people dismissed the M8 in the beginning for the sam ereasons, but look at it now. Used M240s used to be sold at a reasonable price( for Leica that is ), but recently the prices have shot up. Perhaps people realised what a gem of a camera it is.
@oh_aces
@oh_aces 5 месяцев назад
100% And CMOS have gone through several generations of R&D and upgrades, while CCD has been very stagnant. In terms of price, I have seen good condition bodies go for $1800-2000, and for that price a full frame Leica RF is a great system.

I’ve never tried an M240, but it is true that i don’t like the color I see on them. When i bought an M10r to pair with my M9 P, i had a difficult time until i was able to equate the color, which when you work on projects, is quite important. I use the Ms for work when I need to walk longer distances because they are light and relatively inconspicuous. Regarding the quality of files, I find them comparable (leaving apart the size) to those of the GFX. Sincerely I think the standard summicrons I use are at least on par with the 32-64 and the 110. And in general terms I dislike the basic interpretation of the raw files out of the GFX 100. Everything can be tweaked, but when you don’t like your starting point it becomes a problem. I suppose that is part of the problem that users found in the 240. I haven’t heard the same kind of critiques from the M10s. But all of them share what you mention of being lovely cameras to use. They become an extension of your eye, with simple and natural operation.

@oh_aces 5 месяцев назад
Wow. such wealth of info in this comment. You've got more experience than me when it comes to a pro setup. I rarely use leicas for work, encroaching on never. Ill say that I do think the fuji colors can be an issue depending on whether you're using lightroom, or another app, and which color profiles, etc. I personally love them, especially since I'm mostly a film shooter these days. I am compromised by nostalgia having grown up shooting film. That said, I think Sigma is low-key the real color science champ. And do you really get along fine with the M9 files? While I found the colors faithful, I did not like pushing those files much. They felt "thin". The GFX files feel like they consist of layers of paint brushed on thick.
@irenedp4947
@irenedp4947 5 месяцев назад
@@oh_aces you are right. Raising shadows in the M9, or a CCD sensor in general, is hard and you’d better use it in well lit environments. I find the GFX files malleable and suppose that the 16 bit color and the dynamic range have something to do. The Leica S3, which has only 14 bit color, has also very good files, although anything with 16 bit (GFX, the new Hassel or Phase One) is obviously superior in that respect

im thinking to get the M240 / M 246 or M262 what is your opinion on that...its 2014 now and the M12 might be coming.. is the old M still ok ?
@SourPlanet
@SourPlanet 5 месяцев назад
M240 is still just as good as it ever was. I picked one up in 2023, keeps up with the streets of NYC just fine. Lacking only convenience features- still a perfect photography tool for those who don't need the fancy modern crutches.
@andriykovach2736

You don't buy m system for specs so any model is good as long as it suits you. I've got 246 and 240, not going to change them as long as they work
@oh_aces
@oh_aces 5 месяцев назад
the M11 is a MASSIVE upgrade on specs and low light performance, but in operation as a rangefinder camera there is no difference. If you need very high resolution and good low light, the M11 is tops. Get the M240 is you want to put money towards lenses. Get the M11 if you own great lenses already and have a huge budget. As for the M12, I dont think it's coming until 2026.

For digital. It's a pretty tough tie between the M246 Monochrom and the Sigma FP... For film, its probably an M or an R... Maybe my $20 Nikkormat, or a screw mount barnack from the 50's. :)
