Odyssey 2 was my first foray into video games back in the very early 80s. My family, which at the time consisted of 4 of us, would play bowling together. My mother was good at Cosmic Conflict, my father was into Intro to Programming, and my sister and I played a lot of Pick Axe Pete. We all enjoyed K.C. Munchkin and didn't want to believe it was a Pac Man ripoff because it was far superior, in my opinion. You could make your own mazes, Pac Man had the same one over and over!

Often wished I'd have bought this computer console back in the day. Really like a lot of the games especially demon attack,frogger and defender. Only hope for a videopak mini to get a release. Like the 400 mini. Great video on some excellent games. 👍

Brazil has long time fans of the Odyssey 2. It came here simply named as Odyssey and the Brazilian Philips made an effort of translating the titles of every game in order to make it our own in the subconscious. I wasn't young enough to be part of the league of the fandom; however, I can see why it was one of the most important consoles of the 2nd generation here in my country, alongside Atari 2600.

The two K.C. Games were so much fun! The first one had mazes where the walls would blink invisible for a few seconds. You could even build your own maze!

Quest of the rings came with a game board that worked in conjunction with the game. It was amazing

I understand that the programmer has a lot to do with the quality of a game. With that said, it’s interesting how limited, the Odyssey II games appear, in some respects - and how stunning they are in other respects! The system hardware clearly possessed it’s strengths and weaknesses!

It’s a utter shame that philips restricted game developers to only use the builtin 64 tile sets of the system,as a result,most games just look simular to each other,popeye is a prime example for suffering such downgrade🥲🥲,now while sprites can be overlapped over each other to be able to create all kinds of sprites you want the hard way,but that cannot be said for the background as tiles aren’t allowed to overlap each other,so in that regard you are very limited in what you can do for the background, Maybe the scanline trick and and using sprites alone in an alternatiing way may could help to get ariund those limitations VIRTUALY,by mimicking a background with it the way you want it aside from real sprites but i guess it will require more cpu power and it may could result in flicker,also the sound options are limited as you could only choose within a selection of backed in sound effects,maybe you can create your own sounds by alternating it’s timers but it would again involve extra processing power, Now if only philips just added waaay more tile sets and sound effects into the odyssey 2,or give game developers just the freedom to create their own tile sets and sound effects the easy way,then games could,ve been sooo much more fun to enjoy and play.

Grew up in the 80's as a teen knew most of these games quit well, and somehow they were fun but After Playing Call of Duty and Battlefield now days. hard to come back to games like these

Both derivations of pacman do show some impressive capabilities of the system because eventrough you ard only stuck with those 64 characters of tile sets to choose from,HOWEVER by combining certain tile sets with each other you can create some impressive graphics,and since there is also a dit to your disposal,you could place them next to each other to create your own graphics and determine the color per dot,this way you could get around of some of it’s restrictions and with this in mind,you could create IN THEORY a toolchain to convert tile sets from other system into commando signals for the odysey 2 to reconstruct those tile sets by telling it to copy past that dot and change it’s colors to closely match that of the original tile set,such toolchain could,ve encourage other developers to make games for the odysey 2 back in the day,had they just releazed that they could,ve just that dot inside that character set to create graphics rather then getting stuck on the entire restricted character set😁👍

The first computer that I got in my life. I got this at the age of 6 and can recall it like yesterday. I can still even remember many of the games that I see in this video, including my favourite "killer bees". It also makes me think again about how obsessed people nowadays about about having the most high-end videocard to achieve just that few extra FPS. Actually, I find it totally obsessive and greedy if you see how games were 3 to 4 decades back. I honestly think that the nowadays gamer is too spoiled.

My favourite games from the list is theSpace Invaders rip off and Pick Axe Pete. Both games I think allowed you to have an area where you be safe and not take damage.

Very cool. I still have my Atari hooked up but I'd love to get an Oddyssey 2. They're probably expensive like all retro consoles now.

Not sure about North America, but in the UK/Europe they are one of the cheaper systems to collect for.

Got my videopac for 40 euro's so its not that expensive

@@TheLairdsLair yes, even cheaper than the Atari 2600. Yesterday I bought a French Videopac and 9 CIB games for just over 50 euros. The owner didn't have a CRT TV to make it work properly, so the console is not granted to work and I will have to test it, but the price is great all the same, considering that the games are some of the best the system has to offer (Munchkin, Satellite Attack aka UFO...)
