One of my pet peeves is when I go online to share photos or videos of something, only to have that one know-it-all chime in, doling out advice that you never asked for. They just assume that everybody that crosses their path is a novice, and they should be grateful that this seasoned veteran is here to grace you with their knowledge. 😧

IKR, when the post is about something like “what kind of lettuce is your snail’s favorite” with a picture of a snail with no context about the tank and a know-it-all chimes in about a small fish in the background of the photo “your tank is too small for that fish, it needs at least 40 gallons, rehome it NOW” and then the tank of the person posting ends up being like 125 gallons

Yes 😂. I joined a beginners facebook group and oh my goodness, people were soo rude, considering that it was supposed to be a place to share ideas and ask questions. People were posting pictures of their tanks that they were all proud of and getting absolutely slated by snobs who thought their perfectly manicured aquascapes with more greenery than anything else we the only way. I left the group when they were making jokes at the expense of people with SpongeBob decs and calling them tacky! Mine has SpongeBob to please my 8 year old kid fml😮. I swear they were disgusted by anything the fish wouldn’t have in their “natural environment”… ummm… I suspect none of the fish actually have a clue what their habitat looks like 😊

I am lazy, but I honestly find the weekly water change/minor cleaning do be kinda relaxing. 10-15 minutes out of a day off where I might spend most of it gaming to keep everything happy in the tank is pleasant. It keeps the tank pleasant to look at if I decide to just relax there instead of in front of a screen. However, I don't have a huge number of tanks (pretty much only 1 active with some other stuff around for quarantine), so it lets me focus my attention on one tank.
@MontrealMusiciansExchange
@MontrealMusiciansExchange 3 года назад
No doubt, it is therapeutic in many ways. When you think about it - you’re a bit like a prison guard; unless you change the water and feed these fish, they will die. They are COMPLETELY DEPENDENT on you not being lazy and getting it DONE!!

This reminded me of a really silly mistake I did years ago 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m still working at a pet store but years ago I had been there for about 2 years at that point and we were moving the fish around to different tanks in our fish area (my favourite section) I was moving a large amount of white cloud minnows, I was catching them and putting them into a little plastic bucket thing that hooks onto the side of the big tanks then tipping that little bucket into the new tank, while loading the little bucket up with fish a customer came up to me to ask for help and stupidly I walked away leaving the danios in the bucket, a few hours later after helping a few different customers I came back to the danios and they had began jumping out of the little bucket onto the floor! I panicked and started to try pick up the multiple danios flopping around on the floor. I was horrified they fish where jumping out! All I can guess is I left them for to long in the little bucket and the oxygen levels where to low with so many fish and they just leaped for it, It’ll never ever let myself be distracted and leave a fish in a terrible position again I also have over flooded a few tanks too because I was distracted 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I set up a new 40 gallon about 6 months ago, I used the sponges from a well established aquarium in the new filter so that it was cycled right away, for about a month the water was cloudy and I couldn't figure out why, the plants and fish were doing fine so I just let it be, today the water is crystal clear, it took awhile but it worked itself out.

I was looking for this comment. I knew someone else would know about these amazing gadgets. There are also water sensors meant for alerting you to a water leak under a sink that can then be plugged into a home automation system. Then there are also gadgets that you can place on a water shut-off valve. So, if anywhere in your house one of the sensors gets wet all the water will shut off.

Working at petco as an aquatic specialist under the guidance of a really intelligent dude who has been there for 17 years. He basically knows everything about fish even with no formal education. My store manager on the other hand is not so bright. We have to fill the salt water sumps everyday. For some reason the store manager decided to fill them in the morning and forgot about it. He ended up over filling the sumps and completely messing up the salinity. He could have killed thousands of dollars worth of fish, but luckily only two $50 anemones died. Still sucks, but it could have been way worse.

To keep from over filling your tanks you can get a sensor that will sound an alarm. Its actually meant for basements but you just binder clip the little sensor to your aquarium and as soon as water touches it, it goes off... I had one of these before I had my basement waterproofed and a sump put in and one day it hit me.... I can use this for the Aquariums. You over fill once you don't want it to happen again!

I left for a weekend to go to my uncle’s cabin and I made sure everything with my tanks was good and stuff but then I come home and one of my fish lost an eye and I have no idea what happened. The others don’t pick on it or anything it was just completely gone when I got home. The fish is doing good though and it’s been like that for several months now and gets good fine and everything.

I have to agree with the fish research. Where I live there isn't a speciality shop for only aquatic animals they are only petstores that also sell fish. So it's often the case the person who is responsible for keeping them isn't in the store because he's responsible for all the fish of that particular chain in the region. And the person in the store has no idea about fish at all except for packaging them for selling. When I was there and the person couldn't answer my questions I quickly left and decided it would be better to drive 3 hours to a speciality shop and back to buy my fishes. I called them before going there and they were a huge help. I still buy all my supplies in their online shop even though it's a bit more expensive than buying in that pet chain.

the filter one always stresses me out because in the winter we get a lot of bad storms that knock out our power. without a generator, i'm stuck waiting for the power to come back on and see what chaos went down.

You reminded me I needed to buy the medication stuff. I got everything else for my new tank but forgot that. Thanks

If you are on a budget, the only “medication” I would recommend to have on hand is Aquarium Salt. It might cure your fish/ give him some time for you to go and buy the right medication.

I'm new to this whole fish keeping thing, what is aquarium salt and what does it do/what's it for?
@clementdarchez2473
@clementdarchez2473 3 года назад
@@palestar828 it will help your fish to regenerate his slime coat and help your fish to breath with his gills. It will also help to fight off ich or the white small sports on your fishes. It's a great item that you can easly find for around 10 Euros.
@kaylawolfie1111
@kaylawolfie1111 3 года назад
@@palestar828 Aquarium salt is also not the stuff you add to make a Saltwater tank. Its like a medicine, its like Epsom salt. I have read about people mixing up the two and the fish died.

My heater and I are low key frenemies, it works wonderfully and I’ve never had it go out on me, but I have forgotten to unplug it while water changing multiple times. One time it melted through the plastic holders and my room smelled like burnt plastic for a week, I had to scrub the glass around it and the ornaments as well as do an extra water change to make sure no plastic toxins got in the water. My heater now has a black patch of hardened plastic chilling on it that won’t scrub off. I’ve also reached in and grabbed it when it was cool enough to be out of the water but still hot enough to burn if you directly touch it 🙃😂

I lost a fancy goldfish several weeks ago. I have been blaming a candle I used but remember the power had gone off and kept going off until I couldn’t restart the fuse box. Electrician couldn’t find anything wrong but I had a dead fish on the heater. I think it was electrocuted... the candle was burning to mask the smell of spilled aquarium water..

Not sure if this was already mentioned, but keeping all your power cords in a power bar and then turning the power off at the bar, can possibly prevent forgetting to plug in filter, because if you have a aerator you notice right away it's not on. Also you can buy a timer for a garden hose, may be able to MacGyver to use that on your fill hose? I consistently overfilled horse water tanks until I got a timer.

Hey great video!! Question here on a different subject I’m setting up a 40 breeder for one or two fancy goldfish and a dojo I was looking at the Aqueon led pro 50 for it and 2 sponge filters. I have the Aqueon led pro 75 on my other tank an love it. Do you think that size would work fine for that tank with that load? Thanks for all the valuable information.

A really mistake to make is impulse buying fish, when I first bought my 30 gallon aquarium, I bought 11 fish: 2 swordtails, 2 angelfish, a crowntail betta, and 6 FREAKING Goldfish: 2 Oranda, 2 I didn't know( could have been koi) , and 2 black moors, that too, I kept the fish in on the same day as I setup the tank.

My work around forgetting to turn the filters on involves an inexpensive timer, the type that has the pins for setting its on/off times. I simply pick one or two pins on separate sides of the dial to turn off the power for the least amount of time. When I feed, I simply turn the dial to one of the off positions. The timer will turn on the power in 15 minutes or so giving the fish plenty of time to eat. You don't even have to worry about the time set because you are not using it as for a schedule, just as an on/off switch.

I’m not sure about you but I take offense to people saying that fish keeping is a lazy hobby. Um, no, it’s not. When done correctly fish keeping is almost an exact science hobby, especially when dealing with reef tanks/saltwater tanks.

A bit off topic. My brother was filling his new water bed. He fell asleep in the living room finally he was awakened to a very large boom and sat up in time to see his laundry basket float by the couch. He had to rent very big water vacuum and then went to his local fire department to borrow there very large fans
