Today's famous riff is a big one, the classic acoustic opening riff to Led Zeppelin's "Over the Hills and Far Away".
With liberal use of hammer-ons and pull-offs and some quick chord strumming the great Jimmy Page created an intro that sets the mood of the song up perfectly for the latter more aggressive full band sections.
But the trouble with that is that we have to play all those tricky little hammer-ons or pull-offs on an acoustic guitar, something many guitar players would rather avoid. :)
But fret not (pun intended), in this Over The Hills And Far Away Guitar Lesson I will break down all those tricky little guitar parts into an easy to understand pattern.
I think learning this riff is a great opportunity for just about every guitarist to strengthen their fret hands while playing a riff that sounds really cool. And if you are playing this riff well it definitely is a head turner. :)
I think my favorite playing of Jimmy Page is usually with his acoustic stuff. He seems to be at his best both technically and creatively with an acoustic guitar in his hands. That is very apparent with this opening riff to "Over the Hills and Far Away".
But if you would like to learn not only this acoustic intro but the full band electric parts as well just help me get 600 RU-vid likes for this video and I will then teach the entire song note-for-note. Sound like a plan?
So I will be waiting for all of those likes and in the meantime try to focus on mastering this great acoustic intro to one of Led Zeppelin's greatest songs.
Carl..

Thx Carl! I used to sing this song! I lost my speech to cancer 8 yrs ago...survived cancer via faith and God is restoring my speech but am learning guitar! This and Bron Yr Aur...are my favorites! You give great lessons! Iplayed guitar off and on since 1990...but focused mostly on voice but God told me to play guitar till I can play Vivaldi. I am practicing daily! I want to learn this and Bron Yr Aur. These lessons are tops....after trying to play guitar you see how skilled Page is...wow a master for sure! But God gives me Mark 9:23 and says it's possible to sing again and play like Page! You are a master on guitar! I went from 0% speech to 90%. Just gonna keep believing! Philippians 4:13. Cheers!

Carl I joined youtube just so I can like your videos, and tell you how much I appreciate your site, you deserve a ton of respect, especially when you produce a video every day, thats crazy! I hope you will get the likes and get to teach the full lessons but Even if you dont, I hope it wont discourage you. Your site which is already one of the most complete guitar guide in the internet and it only gets better and better. some day you will get the exposure you deserve. And if I can make a request, it would be so awesome if you'll teach something from Dream Theater. Anything would be great but if i mind suggest, Under a Glass Moon has an incredible solo which if im not mistaken got into top 100 solos of all time, so I guess you can call that famous :) Thanks again and best of luck in the future!

I took guitar up in my mid twenties back in the '80s. This is not ideal. Best to take up any instrument as early as possible in order glean the most out of muscle memory. Factor my late start with my very busy life working as a carpenter and raising a family and there was only so much time, and to be honest inclination, when it came to playing. It pretty much takes me decades to learn how to play any intermediate song but perseverance is a great thing and so is love for the instrument. My love for the guitar is profound. I don't envy those with ability; I appreciate them. Thanks for that which you share.

You're so awesome that I'm gonna leave you in my will! It'll be mostly debt... but don't let that take away from the honor of being included in someones will! This won't be in the will, but if you go down to my studio... under the table top in a cubby hole pushed to the back... inside a black tube is a black jar...inside that jar... is ...a... bag of weed! It's all yours man!
