Superstar rhythmic gymnast Margarita Mamun has reached a crucial moment in her career. At the age of twenty, she is soon to retire but has one final goal: winning Olympic gold. As Margarita pushes her body to its breaking point, Irina Viner-Usmanova, her strict coach, assails her with caustic, withering critiques. Is Irina a merciless tyrant or the motivating guidance Margarita needs to fulfill her dreams? This nail-biting, behind-the-scenes documentary looks at the grueling Russian system for training athletes and the intense physical and mental labor put into a sport that thrives on its beautiful aesthetics.

It's not abuse for them. She chose to be the best at rhythmic gymnastics and that's how the coach is. That's why Russia is such a powerhouse in the sport. These girls know how she is, they know the grueling training that goes with it. She doesn't force them to be there. If they want to leave they can and girls do leave because it's too much. Rita was always my favorite. The one that would shine when it mattered the most. That's what she showed us in Rio. However, this docu showed people what RG is like. Being a sports journalist, you simply know the reality of different sports. However it will never stop being heartbreaking to see how she was mistreated, same as many others before and after her. They all deserve so much more and all of this should never be the cost of a medal. The human being, the athlete matters most. More than any gold. That being said, I believe that Rita will be an amazing coach, I've seen the impressions after her masterclasses and she's just so warm and kind... Everything she knows those girls need. Everything she almost never had.

Lots of comments about Viner being abusive - Not saying I agree with Viner's methods but the context is important. If you know a little bit about the Russian gymnasts then you'd know that Mamum is actually a favourite of Viner and was given a lot of opportunities by her. Furthermore, If you read interviews with the director it will be clear that Mamun was only able to win Gold because she got such a treatment. What is really interesting is that Yana Kudryavtseva was never yelled at by Viner or "abused" because she was motivated differently (compared to Mamun). Viner knows full well that Mamun is not competitive enough on her own, she needs to be pushed really harshly, hence the yelling and abuse hurled at her. Honestly, it would have been much easier for Viner to give up on Mamun because there are so many girls who could have replaced her, including Kudryavtseva. But I can only say that Viner saw the potential in Mamun and liked her too much to go the easy way out.

To be honest, being so abusive towards someone can lead to 3 things. In some very extremely rare cases, success, in most cases, failure of an otherwise successful gymnast, and 3, hatred and who knows, maybe someone ends up dead.

Actually in the documentary they say Yana used to be yelled the same the year before. Basically whoever wins is fine, the other is treated like a forever loser. Viner liked Kudryatseva a little more, and even said in multiple occasions that if she hadn't done that mistake at the Olympics she would have won (which is true looking at the scores). Mamun kept it together in the day-

Rhythmic gymnastics is a very difficult field, like ballet where one has to stretch his or her own limits everyday to be the number 1. If you need hugs, kisses and endless flattery - don’t choose this sport. Conveniently they show Viner’s harsh side more than her soft side, however if she were a man, she would not be questioned. The woman rules with an iron fist because it is her life’s work, she does this for her country, she can be harsh but these gymnasts have access to all the care they need - doctors, food, gym, vacations - she covers everything just for them not have to worry about it and focus on gymnastics. The field is over competitive and staying on top is a great cost. Parents, who bring their kids to her know exactly what they are getting into. I actually rooted for Yana at the Olympics because all her routines were memorable and much more difficult than Rita’s and her performances were just utter perfection. For goodness sake, she one a title once with a broken leg. I am not saying that Rita was not a fighter or did not deserve to win but at the end - had Yana not lost that club, she would have been the champion. She worked much harder for it.

As much as i was very happy to see her achieve the pinnacle of the sport, i fear that her success will only endorse the abuse and many more young girls will suffer the same fate. They will fail to understand that she won that gold DESPITE the confidence sapping attacks. Not because of them. Just watched it, I'm so mad and sad right now, they should've called this doc movie "a Mental Abuse" instead of "Over the Limit", what kind of monster was that couch? for a piece of metal she took life and the soul from her body, I'm pretty sure she was mot of a downer than a helper and she would have won and probably performed better with a different coach, what did she win at the end? she left her family for ages, she lost her father, she is broken from body and soul. I used to love gymnasts, but now after watching this, "At the Heart of Gold", and "Athlete A", I started to hate gymnastic sport, they are getting recruited very young like a soldier to fulfill someone else's dream, and they get lift behind later with sadness and broken soul and body just like soldiers, this sport needs to be changed from the ground up, from the judges, the scores, the coach, everything otherwise it's not fan anymore to watch since this abuse is almost trending with all the countries just to compete for medals. Some may say the end justify the means but it doesn't, there are a lot of Athletes who won gold medal like Simone Biles without such abusive coach.

Doctors made Biles mentally disabled by injecting her with tranquilizers. I'm very sorry for Simone. You are far from the world of Russian rhythmic gymnastics. Despite the complexity and toughness of this profession, the best gymnasts win championships and olympiads. In addition to fame, they also receive a lot of prize money, advertising money. After completing a career, they show themselves on television, in show business, in business and in politics.

I love RG and I love how the Russian girls manage incredible routines with apparent ease. If the price to pay is that constant abuse it's really not worth it, though. Besides, the Russian RG team don't really care about the girls: they just want medals for the glory of Russia. All the girls have to retire early because, after a while, they get so many injuries they simply can't go on. But it doesn't matter: they have won the gold medals Russia needs to boast and there are younger girls to replace them in a neverending, awful loop. The new code of points, with its emphasis on risks and difficulties only worsens this situation. The Averinas look like jugglers and the younger ones are even worse.

This training system leads to success only when you don't have competition. The economic collapse in Bulgaria in the 90's left Russia without the biggest competitor, but times are changing and many countries are already developing rhythmic gymnastics .. I hope "people" like Irina Wiener will stay away from sports!

I just watched it and i am confused. How are these coaches helping in any way ? It feels like they got lucky, they have a extremly talanted girl in the team, and they just bully her, and make it even harder for her. Maybe the documentation is supposed to look like that, so it makes no real sence. I have to doubt, that this is actually how the training looks like. Maybe the old women is just a money giver or sort of, who has no real impact on the training team. This is how it looks to me.

It's a tactic used in Russia, making you feel like shit to motivate to push harder. They use group coaching too to put you in competition mood every day so if your teammate does it better, you have to live with it. It's very shitty but athletes accept it cause it's the only way there.

It's very ungrateful of Margarita to beef on the one person who gave the LAST chance to achieve her Olympic dream. Gymnastics is hard, very hard. And only the ones with strong body and mind win. Margarita won gold. But her character is weak. She decided to take revenge AFTER she has achieved the dream of her life. She would have been NOTHING without her coach Irina Viner. Besides, she could have quitted anytime but she didn't. So her urge for gold was bigger than her feelings. Suddenly after the Olympics she remembered that trainings were hard. Who would have thought! Kinda disgusting.
