Just found this series yesterday because I’m a hello future me fan and I watched the entire thing in one sitting. Loving everything you’ve got to say! I just finished my 4th watch through a few weeks ago but this makes me want to start it over again!
Dude, your doing great!!! I liked the content so much I watched it all in one go and since have been waiting for this video comes out. I ask myself tho what you are gonna do if you have done the whole series? Kora maybe? But then what I know that's still a long time away but I hope you keep producing great video's like this for us. Best of luck
I found your series like 3 days ago and ive been trying to get my friend to watch too cause i know he would like it Thanks for the good content man i hope me having yt premium gives you some money
People gradually lose the ability to hear higher frequencies like that with age, made worse by consistent loud music/sounds. I did not realise I had such youthful hearing but I'm with you on having my ears blasted.
It's because Appa and Ang comes from two different schools of thought. Where Ang and the air benders think violence is never the answer, Appa counters that rather violence is the _question_ and the answer is *Yes*
“This man is dead. Appa killed a man.” I know this isn’t the first time he’s made this joke, but I can’t stop laughing at it. There’s something hilarious about Appa having a significant body count all on his own.
The dutch translation of long Feng is long gone is actually better than the original because it rimes better and sokke basically calls him a bitch Dutch translation: Long Feng eerder long kreng
@@edwardbo4666 not exactly because appa was worn out by all that traveling, fighting, surviving, mental health and physical health but that boar fight mostly gets appa lost all strength...
@@edwardbo4666 he's still weak and needs to recover. Dude only got two good days, the rest were dehydration, survival, fighting, lack of proper sleep, etc... dude couldnt put up a lasting fight in his condition
Also when Appa gets hit with the darts and is losing consciousness, you can see a mushroom cloud in the distance that was made by Aang in the previous episode where we looked for Appa.
@@carlosemiralonso7997 ahh yeah the amateur writer that has written one of the best episodes like "avatar and the firelord" and the "southern raiders".... Edit: also don't forget zukko alone. Damn she's such an amateur ...
Fun fact: the voice actor for the boy in the circus who helped Appa was the same voice actor for Aang. That is why Appa was reminded of Aang when he was laughing because there really the same person.
I find this episode to be the hardest to watch in the series, and don't get me wrong I actually love it and think it's an almost flawless episode. Watching Appa struggle and panic looking for Aang just hits so hard.
@@Bazza52Razza im gonna binge this series with a friend coming up and i am not looking forward to reliving it, but am looking forward to seeing his heart break
I just got the “Avatar’s fan girls” line just now while watching. Because the Kiyoshi Warriors literally are girls using the fans that Kiyoshi used. Avatar fan girls/ avatar fangirls. I feel dumb for not getting that.
In defense of the shirshu darts. It could be extracted from the animal an be an more potent extraction. So it's stronger and thus more effective substance.
Can't help wondering if shirshu spit is actually a poison, not a venom. Considering the lack of bleeding cuts when the shirshu tongue-whips people, it leads me to believe it's a fast-acting poison, not a venom. Venom, as you know, has no effect when touching skin or even ingested - unless there's an open cut allowing it to enter the bloodstream. Poison, on the other hand, metabolizes through skin and/or ingestion. If the shirshu spit is poison, that could explain near-instant paralysis when the shirshu tongue-whips the nape of the neck or other large muscle groups, paralyzing on contact. Also, if concentrated and then applied to darts, it would still be effective just like the poison tipped darts certain tribes in the Amazon make from poison arrow frog secretions in real life. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter, since it's a plot device and what matters is shirshu spit paralyzes things. It is fun to over-analyze, though. :D
So if Appa understands humans perfectly, was he just trolling Sokka back in the early episodes when him and Katara tried to go after Aang, and Sokka was trying to remember what to say to get Appa to fly?
Or it could be that he's trained quite well to only take off when a certain command is given, so casual conversation doesn't inadvertently put you on the y-axis
Aang saying that Appa has 5 stomachs made me realize that there were air nation scientists who dissected sky bison. I don't know, it's a weird thought to me for some reason.
they could very well have done to those that passed out naturally or by some sort of disease, not necessarily killed one just for it. as long as the body didnt start decomposing they could have disected it and learned about its anatomy at least to what they had available for it.
8:50 Also Appa rubs his head right after hearing that. There is no way Appa noticed that without understanding what the word "bedhead" means. Add that to the long list of examples that Appa perfectly understands English.
@@yalkn2073 if he's intelligent enough to speak English then he wouldn't had flied even for a yip yip, much less have allowed them to ride his back in the first place if he didn't trust them.
Appa was well-fed and taken care of in the episode in which he took the direct hits from the paralysis monster. In this episode, he's been traveling in the dessert, and experiencing traumatic events. I don't think it's an error that it only takes a few darts, considering his stamina would be low. Also, maybe the poison is more concentrated in dart form.
Tbh Appa’s Lost Days is what made me like Appa more as a character than simply just a mostly mindless form of transportation Like sure we see a few moments of character during the show before this episode But most of the time Appa was “silent” as a character So following on from this episode - Appa finally feels “alive” in my opinion So that’s why Appa’s Lost Days is among my favourite episodes
This is also the first time we see Iroh explicitly decide not to help Zuko pursue the Avatar. He sees Appa, is surprised, but decides to help Zuko find a better life with him in Ba Sing Se instead. Up to this point, we've seen Iroh try to help Zuko figure out who he is, but we haven't seen him reject their stated mission outright. Now we know clearly where he stands.
@@Eric-py8yy I do remember she has a bunch of sisters that look just like her. She could feel like she isn't that beautiful being surrounded by those that look just like her.
3:25 Could be because Appa was around humans his whole life while Momo hardly has ever interaction with people considering he used to life on a temple that has been deserted for a century
Sky bisons are the airbender's guide animals, occupying the same role as dragons for firebenders, and dragons are intelligent enough to judge Aang and Zuko's character just from looking at them and then intentionally demonstrate firebending to them. It's possible that sky bisons may be similarly intelligent.
@@sinancothebest I don't think so. They're not really bending guide animals, just regular animals. Far as I'm aware, the five sapient species in Avatar are humans, dragons, sky bisons, badger moles, lion turtles, and spirits.
9:48 I always took it this way: leverage against the Gaang was very, very, _very_ important to Long Feng, so he wanted to make 100% certain it was done, and done right. For that reason, I also headcanon that he picked out the whistle, from among quite a few.
He's realistically gotta have a harder time hearing those pitches too. Is it possible that when Aang first blew his whistle in Ba Sing Se, that it was heard by some Dai Li who then replicated the sound to catch Appa? More head cannon/theory ig
Ty Lee's line of "you're not prettier than us", right after an attack, makes it feel like a line from a fighting game Like, I can totally picture her saying that as her intro before the first round
i'm surprised you missed how much dunes can actually move over time with the winds... of course their stuff would get buried , and the terrain would be different.
In LoK there is a big shark thing in the dessert. Not 100% sure it is an animal or spirit tho. But can easily see it can survive 70 years. So it being around during aangs time could be possible.
@@appleslover I thought it was simply "oh, they are protecting the Avatar so they're his fangirls" and that was all, and Ty Lee being slow always confused me. Now I finally get it, they fight with FANS so they are FAN-girls.
He actually has a tier higher than the one you have to be for the compliments, and if you subscribe to that one he will hand deliver a flash drive with the latest video to your house
it actually sounds pretty close to sensible that Appa who we know has been very well socialized in a thriving temple understands english, while Momo who's probably only had the occasional death tourist before the gang only understands that people occasionally refer to him.
I’m super late to the party, but I just said the exact same thing. Appa is raised from birth by the air nomads, I know they call him a flying bison, but his role in relation to the nomads is much more similar to the monks that raise elephants. They are bonded to a specific one and they have right around the same lifespan as a human, so it’s a “companion for life.” Elephants actually have pretty high ability to understand human words when raised in that type of environment. Momo is always shown to be VERY intelligent, but he had limited if any interactions with humans so he wouldn’t grow accustomed to associating words with objects or actions.
I think the reason the spit darts were more effective than the actual sheershrew spit is because it would have been refined to a more potent level. Keeping the paralyzing agents and getting rid of water, bacteria, and other elements that would have diluted the poison in the spit
Also also, it looks like most of the shirshu tongue hits land on Appa's fur which, as the show has pointed out MANY times, he has A LOT of. In a manner similar to a lion's mane protecting against neck bites, that fur probably kept the poison from his skin. The darts all hit his relatively hairless foot, and also penetrated, probably delivering the poison to his bloodstream rather than mostly topically like the tongue does.
Never thought about putting rocks on the side of wooden mechanisms to be able to operate them with bending. Love the shit you point out, it really helps to get an even deeper understanding of the worldbuilding they did!
On the note of the sand sailor being covered. Sand dunes are constantly moving and shifting as the wind carries it away it's actually shocking how much sand a simple breeze can move. It's one of the things that makes large deserts so hard to navigate as landmarks can literally disappear in a day
Long Feng personally blowing the whistle, while the direct intent is obviously to connect the dots for children demonstrates Long Feng's personal desire to see is plan come into action. Long Feng isn't just a bureaucrat accomplishing a task, he is the mastermind who wanted to ensure an important piece of his plan was done properly.
He's also the leader of the secrete police. These special forces groups are usually led by former members. I can see the Avatar's arrival being enough of a concern to encourage him to go on the field personally for a week or two, assuming he doesn't do this every night reghardless.
I actually never realized that Appa flew over the Serpent’s Pass the same night the gaang was sleeping on it, Iroh seeing him fly ahead does confirm that. Idk how i never connected those obviously dots
8:18 "Cool ambiguous note to leave this scene on" yeah honestly I'm still surprised Suki killed Azula offscreen like this. I feel like Azula was just getting into her character arc before she got fancapitated
This show is just honestly the best thing to have ever happened to the world. This episode is such a hard hitter for me, It just shows how much love and care was put into the storywriting. And also, I rediscovered this childhood show that I might have never remembered had it not been for this channel, and it has in some ways made my life better, so thank you.
I was abused as a kid, and this show was the light in my shitty life. Avatar is one of my favorite shows of all time, and one of the best shows of all time.
@@via3600 I’d say the line “Don’t worry. I heard cowards float.” From the earth bender’s dad during the prison battle right before he throws the warden overboard. It’s an attempt to sound cool but makes absolutely no sense
@@wrliggin2 It actually makes perfect sense. Humans float in water naturally without needing to know how to swim, but the warden still begged not to drop him down because he didn't know how to swim.
"You're not prettier than we are" is the most out of character line Ty-lee says. Like, *egregiously* so. In The Beach we learn Ty-lee was born in a giant family of girls who loved things like makup and fashion etc. Hence running off to join the circus and wanting to stand apart. The last thing she would care about is being prettier than some random other girls. Yes, The Beach came out much later than this episode, but still, grinds my gears every time.
"You're gonna need headphones for this part, but when the bison whistle goes off you can just hear it, just barely." The Whistle: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
@@gamebuster800 You lose high frequency hearing with age. I'm sure the audio guy who included this had a giggle over the idea that kids would hear the whistle but their parents wouldn't.
I love how you start off by explaining due to this episode being through Appa's point of view there won't be a lot of stuff to analyze, but then make my mom and I crack up so much. Cannot wait for the next episode and your long awaited hot takes on Jet that you promised in the FIRST SEASON----
I teared up when he thought he found Aang but it was another stranger. Even tho it was a kind stranger Appa got so excited, only to be let down again. He just wants his family back 😭 How dare they do Appa like this
Since Appa nuked one of the sand riders the “sell him for parts” bit could be referring to selling him for sand rider parts. Something that useful can’t be cheap right?
It's the merchants who talk about selling him for parts, not the sand benders. But that said, "sell for parts" is not quite the phrasing I'd expect people to use for scrapping and selling piecemeal (as one might do with a computer) or selling to a butcher. Of course, I'm not really sure what a good interpretation of that line *would* be, it's an odd phrase in general. He does do a fair bit of damage trying to escape before he gets darted, so maybe they're going to trade him for parts that they could use to repair the damage? Honestly I'd have gone with "sell him quickly" ie: sell him to the first buyer they can find rather than holding out to see who will pay the most, because keeping him around is difficult.
@@rashkavar Selling him for parts means they kill him immediately so he doesn't do any more damage and then try to find buyers for the parts before they spoil. As opposed to keeping him alive until they find a buyer.
What an incredibly rich & emotive episode this is. It's like "the Tale of Appa" following the last episode. It really drives home his absence from the past several episodes, which takes some real adjusting to as the viewer. Don't think most of us expect Appa to be MIA for long at the end of the Library, given how quickly problems tended to be resolved by that point in the show. It's been a long slog for them. The ache in this episode gives so much depth to what the human characters have been feeling. Few easy wins in Season 2.
Can we talk about Azula & the Kyoshi Warriors from a continuity perspective though? Like this is after the Drill. We just saw both Suki & Azula in back to back episodes. Suki crossed the serpent's pass alone, decided she was done working for the ferry & joined up with the other Kyoshi Warriors to do work in the Earth Kingdom. That's believable. I can get behind that. _Azula_ meets the fucking Avatar at the walls of Ba Sing Se on top of a monster steampunk drill defending the last free city on Earth where he'd be safe to practice Earth Bending & goes "welp, guess I'll keep looking" & starts prowling the Earth Kingdom again the old fashioned way. What's she doing? Looking for Iroh & Zuko? Oh well fuck uh. Hm. I was gonna make a point but actually I think I answered my own question. Um. Never mind. Carry on.
Here's some Trivia for You: On March 27, 2007, this episode received a Genesis Award from the Humane Society of the United States in the category "Outstanding Children's Programming", which the HSUS Genesis Award press release described as "A mythical tale about animals held captive for human entertainment that resonates with the way animals are used in circuses today".
I think Appa can actually understand human’s speech as he got startled in the swamp episode when one of the swamp people told Appa that he want’s to eat him.
God the RU-vid recommendations sometimes suck but other times they are amazing and give creators the audience they deserve! Thank you for this wonderful series, binged every video since finding you!
I think the reason they showed Long Fang take Appa is to show that he could earth bend and it makes what happened to Jet seem like it did not come out of left field
@@cageybee7221 I don’t think so. Long Feng is the king’s advisor, not a military commander. A major politician doesn’t also have to be an earth bender. I’m pretty sure the king isn’t an earth bender either. So I agree with Ronald that it’s good to show Long Feng earth bend in the lead up to Jet’s death
Ned Stark: "I don't fight in tournaments because when I fight a man for real, I don't want him to know what I can do" I think Long Feng follows this idea. He's a political leader and professional manipulator first, but it makes sense that he wouldn't openly reveal his ability to reduce one's insides to mush until it's required. I think having his first instance of Earth Bending being destroying Jet's intestines would land better because we would expect he knows how to Earthbend, but we don't know for sure.
A cool Appa and worldbuilding episode, and the closest we get to an episode actually about Suki, and unfortunately I actually missed it on its first several airings (I'm a fan of Suki). Considering Suki basically led her Kyoshi Warrior team almost from the Earth Kingdom's southern coast to its northernmost region, of the show decided to do more filler, it might've been cool to see her in another adventure protecting a town.
Oh, a note about the spit darts....Jun's has to get through fur and hide in order to poison appa, whereas the spit darts are probably concentrated darts, and they actually hit appa's toesies (poor guy). Thats much more likely to go all the way in...Though you would think it would take longer to knock him out still.
One detail I really love about the sandbenders' design is that their goggles resemble the early sunglasses developed by the Inuit. It makes sense that they would need to protect their eyes from the sand and sun, and blending attention to detail with historically inspired solutions sparks a lot of joy.
Okay, the joke about the episode being written by a woman is actually the best joke in this video. That was so good. I completely forgot about that scene and the back and forth though
Yo here's a tidbit for you to keep in mind for book 3: When toph asks if friendships can really last more than one lifetime, everyone hugs except Sokka who's got something smart to say instead. Then in LoK he's the only friend that didn't live long enough to meet Korra
I like that Long Feng catching Appa implies that he's actually hands-on enough to patrol the city every night. We also got that vibe from the fact that Jet met him while being hypnotized, which means Long Feng likes to oversee this stuff personally. My boy Long Feng is no pencil pusher -- he gets out on the field. Respect. It all just makes the way Azula "defeated" him even more anticlimatic tho.
i always assumed appas lost days inspired by frankenstein or adleast a bit of it, a kind creature rejected by society so it changes in a negative way. 100% that farm house scene was inspired by it
I think you're analyzing a bit too much there. Aang didn't create Appa, nor did he reject Appa leading Appa to go on a mission of revenge. Pretty crucial aspects of the Frankenstein story. It's about man creating and not taking responsibility for life, not a social outcast visiting a farm.
@@Jotari its different but it does feel like it was somewhat inspired by frankenstein especially some scenes although your right that its not the exact same and is very different.
Great video once again, man. Just a quick note though. At 7:00 you said it's the only showing of blood, but there's actually another scene at S2E1 where Zuko bleeds from his forehead as well. I've also mentioned this in my old video about Appa's Lost Days if you'd like to see what I mean.
“You’re probably going to need headphones for this, you can barely hear this” Me: “ok I’ll just turn my phone volume up” Phone: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE My man just broke my ears lmao
8:02 I adore the idea that Ty Lee is so positive that she literally can’t insult people and instead uses backhanded compliments that imply the enemy is at least somewhat pretty
It could be because the fan girls (it been a couple years so the name escape me) remind her about her sisters and how looking a like was a curse to her so ty lee probably said that thinking about her sisters like you’re not prettier than me, I am different, sort of talk. And how she ended up joining said group because of that very sisterly bond. But that could be me over analyzing it how she said that stars different destiny excuse to azula when we first met her. All I’m saying until the betrayal we never see ty lee sorrow or actual thoughts without being behind a play on words Beside the beach episode
@@josegar30 That’s actually a really good point and I remember being super confused when she joined the Kyoshi Warriors even though she said she didn’t want to a part of a matched set. I guess she missed her bond with her sisters but she also maybe had some memories where her sisters would be super competitive about their looks and that rubbed off onto her.
@@crispy1519 kyoshi thank you. Yeah, on my 3rd watch that one line sounded extremely out of place and it was until I watch this video than I saw your “sinister” comment and got me thinking that yeah, you’re right. This is the only time she was straight on mean and against a cool group of warriors as the kyoshis. So thank you for making me think more critically about it
2:57 : Maybe the darts have just the pure concentrated poison on them while the actual animal has a less efective version because of bacteria and water mixed with it 7:39 : Either because they use fans as weapons or because they all are dressed like Avatar Kyoshi or both thats my explanation of Azulas gag 8:01 : I dont know for me that line is fitting for Ty Lee
It's amazing how much the algorithm's blessing has made this channel grow, the first videos that had like 6k views, now have 100k+ And now I'm proud to say, I'm an Overanalyzing Avatar OG fan 😎
"you might need headphones for this but when appa reacts to the bison whistle, you can actually hear it, just barely" me, 17 with a higher audio range taking an earbud out because its too loud
Actually it totally makes sense to have their stuff and the sand sailor entirely buried in sand only a few hours later. In sandy deserts like that, wind can move the sand around pretty quickly.
although not a massive anime fan and have never watched Avatar at all, I've watched a few of your videos. very funny. So well presented and such a rollercoaster. Great stuff
I think the fact that Long Feng was personally involved in capturing Appa is how he ended up with Appa's bite marks on his leg, so I guess this had to happen for that scene to even kind of make sense.
I was able to watch the show in its entirety since your last upload. Goddamn I love Avatar! Also, remember when you thought the initial shot of the Earth King used to be just a silhouette? I think I know why you remembered it that way: you probably watched it on an improperly calibrated display/TV that had contrast turned up too high. That'd be enough to ink-out the details, and make him more of a silhouette.
You literally are incredible at reviewing this, personally one of my favorite series of all time and listening to you do this makes me so happy. Thanks a lot!!
