I think Toph's thinking comes less from "Oh, my wrestling persona is tough and cocky" and more "I've been sheltered and coddled my entire life, so to me, the kindest thing to do is let you get your stuff together, I'll get my stuff together, and we can coexist". Basically, she doesn't want to depend on anyone else, and expects others to be the same as well.
@Sinewmire
@Sinewmire 2 года назад
In my opinion, Toph wants to be independent after her suffocating coddling. She thinks Katara is offering to help her, and then thinks she's patronising her by giving her busy work. I think she's too wrapped up in her own issues to realise Katara is genuinely asking for help.

@@Sinewmire I understand Toph and I don't blame her. Just yesterday she lived on a short leash from her parents, who did not understand her and considered her helpless(even after they learned that she is a capable and very powerful earthbender, it did not make them accept her as she is, they are incorrigible snobs who will do anything to maintain their status as the richest people in the world), and now she has become free and independent. Also, because of the way Toph used to live, she doesn't accept help from others and doesn't help others herself because she's afraid(although she doesn't show it) that it might turn out to be pity for her, and that's what she doesn't want most. It's just hard for Toph to get used to freer conditions, but then she got used to it, and then it was easier for her. But after Iroh's advice, she changed her views. Iroh convinced her that her friends were helping her not out of pity or because they thought she couldn't do something, but because they truly loved and cared about her. This seems to say to her, “Learn to distinguish pity from a truly sincere desire to help you, because these are different things”. He also convinced Toph to return to her friends, make peace with them, and if they were in danger, help them. And she did as Iroh advised her

Now that you say it, it makes me wonder how well known is the story of the banished prince of the fire nation? If known, the people most likely don't know the reasoning behind his burning. concerning the scar, Zuko is primarily in "enemy" territory, where, after 100 years of war with the fire nation, people with burns and scars are so common it's become just another part of life for them. Completely wild guess from a bricklayer here, from the looks of the stone work and the location, id assume the walls of those houses are made of Adobe and dried mud. Adobe is a mix of clay, soil, water and thatch that has been left to dry in a brick shaped mould. Its very heat resistant, but had a terrible habbit of wearing down easily with age, and cracks and crumbles when exposed to fire, so id say that azula slicing through it is fairly plausible! Zuko is Zuko and really highlights Iroh's comment about his refusal to rely on others and the weight he puts on himself alone, Iroh and Toph talking is the best thing ever, Toph and Katara fighting is reasonable, Aang's snap about Appa carrying Toph's weight it on the nose and a great reminder of just how much Appa means to him and how much his few breaks in emotional fortitude tend to tie back to Appa and exactly where responsibilities lie while also clearly being sparked by fatigue, Azula's VA Grey DeLisle-Griffin bringing it (and everyone's VA), Sokka and Katara having cool fights with new characters + Ty Lee's relatable observation of his cuteness, Zuko, Aang, all the things

The conversation between Toph and Iroh Really helped me as a kid. I was about 10 when the show came out, so I would've been 11 or 12 when this episode, and thus the conversation, premiered, and it was the first time that I realized people could help me without being annoying. I'm blind like Toph, and I grew up with a chip on my shoulder, because I thought, when people helped me, it was out of pity. I've grown a lot since then, and I'm much better at telling when people want to help me because they want to help me, and when they want to help me because they think I can't do something, when I actually can, or because they feel bad for me. I'm much more polite about declining their help nowadays, but before I heard that conversation, I was not good at all. It took me a while to implement what Iroh said, but I got the hang of it eventually. What I'm saying is that conversation is amazing, and I know I'm not the only one who that helped by it.Thanks Iroh, and Avatar as a whole, you're the best!

@@sordidspectacle7393 The writing of the comment is easy to explain: I have dictate, or text-tospeech, with IOS, the speaker button on the keyboard (That's why there are typos). This comment I'm typing however with my braille display. The watching of it on the other hand, because it's Avatar specifically, is a bit more complicated. Avatar is unique in how fighting works, because it has different sounds and bigger more distinct visuals for fighting than most fight scenes in anything. Plus, because it's animated, the colors are more distinct than if it was in live-action or just not as bright. Since I have some remaining vision, both of these things were helpful to me as a kid. of course the latter was more helpful, but colorful things have also been easier for me to watch, which is partly why I like anime and cartoon more than live-action stuff unless whtever I want to watch has an Audio Description available. Nowadays, on Netflix, I watch Avatar with something called Audio Description, which, as the name would imply, describes what is happening on screen. This have been very helpful to me, especially with the fight scenes when it comes to understanding what's going on. There are also plenty of things I didn't notice growing up, even after having seen the show a billion times, that I hadn't noticed until watching it would AD. If you want to see what that's like, go on Netflix find Avatar, then, before pressing play, go into the "Audio and Subtitle" settings and check, "English Audio Description." If you're watching it on an app, you need to press play and click the white box in the corner. That'll open the audio and subtitle setting there. You can also do it this way on a TV. It's made by Netflix, so it's very good quality, both in the script of the AD and the reading. I hope you find it interesting, and maybe even helpful.

I really like that azula doesn’t just target zuko and iroh out of nowhere to hammer in the point that she’s evil and ruthless. They were both calculated decisions. First it was zuko because she knows she is going to be in direct competition with him over the avatar. And she targets iroh because he was distracted by seeing toph big chilling with the avatar.

I wanna add something: When the corner Azula and she surrenders, the camera pans the Toph, then her feet, and after Azula shoots Iroh, Toph is worried and shocked, camera panning to her feet again. On the first watch through, you wont notice it, but that was to show that Toph couldn't tell Azula lied. This sure as hell hits harder than when Azula said she was a 400 foot tall platypus bear.

The Toph Iroh talk is one of my favourite scenes in the entire show. In the middle of a tense, high stakes episode, there's this one moment of respite. It seems completely random that Toph found Iroh, and yet it plays into the sense of destiny throughout the show that Toph found the exact person she needed at that moment. And the discussion itself is deep, even by ATLA standards. It stands out more than almost any other scene in the show to me.

So I saw someone deep dive on the ‘team up on Azula’ last moment, Sokka threw his boomerang before anyone else reacted. While I do agree that toph shooting the dirt seems kinda silly on the surface compared to chucking big boulders, I imagine she's basically blasting a bunch of sand and grit at her. Look up sandblasters. Main use of them I'm aware of is cleaning off oil and that sort of thick gunky shit off of metal parts. If she's blasting it anywhere close to as hard as they blast, it'd literally strip her meat from her bones, and would hurt like a bitch either way. So. Tophs really bringing the pain. It's the kind of like, 'murder application' of bending that is best to just gloss over like paku freezing those dudes.

The forest into desert thing isn't that far-fetched, Colorado has Great Sand Dunes National Park, and there's plenty of areas where it seems to transition very quickly from a pine forest, to grassland, to completely arid desert. This could also be the result of a lake that's dried up very quickly, but based on the mountains in the background it would have to be a seriously big lake. Not impossible, but not common by any means, there's usually a decent gradient between vastly different biomes in real life, desert, to semi arid, to grasslands, to forest, that kind of thing.

4:14 The stance or move is the starting position for the first form of Taichi, Parting the Wild Horse's mane. It's like imagine holding a ball of chi at the height of your center of gravity. What would horse be called in avatar world? They call it horse stance in the next episode, so wut? what so weird about just "bear" then? 6:13 Azula as usual Perception 100. this whole entire situation is her being thoughtful in how to stack all the advantages in her favor. She knows she has her soldiers to work for her and chase the Avatar. While she and her team gets to rest, she's tiring out the GAang by depriving them of sleep and causing them to be exhausted so they won't fight at 100%. It's like later where Zuko pridefully challenges Azula in Basingse, she just says "nope" and uses her dai lee to take care of him. I haven't confirmed it myself, but I heard someone else say when she fights Zuko, she targets his left side bc his eye doesn't work as well as his right and probably has a bit of a blind spot. I don't know how true it is, but it's so in character for though just like when she immediately analyzed and scanned that volleyball girl's weakness in her leg at the beach episode 10:30 Again Azula with the Perception 100, She noticed Iroh's Double take at Toph during the scene, She noticed Iroh's lapse in attention and capitalized on him as the target. iroh didn't know toph as a part of team avatar, which was what surprised him. Their tea meeting was their first time they met,

I’ve seen this show so many times and this is the first time I took the “stars” line as a jab at tophs blindness and not the tent. I felt so bad for her when taking it in that context. Also tired aang is awesome. I love that they toned him down so much because he was exhausted. It would be so easy to show him tired but then animate him and voice him the same as always. But they took the time to keep him moving and acting tired and I’m all for it.

Notice how during the fight Zuko summons a wave of fire, just like a waterbender. Which is a good precursor to what Iroh is about to teach him concerning lightning redirection. Zuko is already learning and taking notes from other bending disciplines even when he doesn't notice it. Against his will to be the prince his father wants him to be, he is already on track to be the exact opposite. It's a small detail that only lasts for 5 seconds but it matters a lot to what people would argue is one of the best redemption arcs in cartoon / tv history.
