Here is an absolutely phenomenal reply video from The Schola-General, who brings up two great counterpoint I hadn't considered regarding flails and I agree with him completely: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZLB08i0Tg6I.html There have been other counterpoints some people have been sharing in the comments that I largely disagree with and have already filmed a follow-up video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hqpa2Rw0qug.html&t Wushu engineer's video where he tests nunchuks vs a stick: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SpPs0k4fz_E.html

I love nunchaku and practice with them a lot, but I know they're not top tier. It's an OK weapon tho, and they are pretty decent as an intimidation weapon. Stick doesn't scare no one, nunchucks - due to film and media - actually have a pretty good intimidation value (if you know how to use them). They're also fairly unpredictable, and I can personally attest to the fact that a hit to the head from a nunchaku hurts like hell. They ARE useless against armor, though, and they can be dangerous to an insufficiently skilled user. Honestly, I consider them B tier at best, although they are my favourite weapon. You should consider the Sanbon Nunchaku as well though (3 sticks, 2 chains), has some interesting applications for striking AROUND weapons, by hitting with the middle stick (although it's tricky to pull off. If you can't find any footage of a Sanbon Nunchaku, while I'm not GREAT with them, I'll send you a short demonstration. Oh yeah, they're also better, reach-wise, than a knife, while being less lethal (good for self defence if you don't want to go to jail for murder!). But I'm jabbering - I'll finish by saying that Nunchaku aren't an amazing weapon, but they ARE cool, fairly portable, intimidating, and can be difficult to predict. I'd love to hear your opinions on the Sansetsukon and other weapons in the Oriental Flail family! EDIT: They also suck defensively, as you said

There was an episode of Deadliest Warrior between the Yakuza and the Mafia. When the Yakuza presented the nunchucku as their weapon and demonstrated its usage and damage. It took a couple hard, coordinated swipes to crack the skull dummy. The Mafia side responded by simply pulling out a Louisville Slugger baseball bat and with one mighty swing, the shattered the same skull into chunks. It was quite a moment.

It's just simple physics. All the power goes back through the stick and through the chain/band and at the latest with the chain and band you lose the greatest power and serve as a wonderful damper. With a stick/baseball bat, the power goes through the stick into your hand and you are the damper thanks to your hand and arm. What loses more strength a loose ligament or chain links or an arm with muscles and bones and the movement working against them?

I was in the Philippines, and observed two pieces of bamboo connected by a piece of string or light rope. It was used to wrap the string around rice stalks. Then the user beat the top end of the rice stalks against a metal or natural woven material to separate the rice from the stalks to harvest the rice. Realized . . . this must be the origin of Nunchuck, an agricultural tool used as a weapon.

The Scholar-General's channel has an idea of why flails (war-flails made with iron and iron chains) were actually decent weapons for horsemen on horseback that builds on Wushu Engineer's conclusions. When you have the added force of traveling on a horse, the rider wanted to limit the handshock they would receive back into their hands/arm. The reduced amount of force from choosing a flail over a mace would be more than offset by the added energy from attacking on top of a moving horse. So due to the "overkill" amount of force when attacking from horseback, it made sense to reduce the amount of force in exchange for reducing the chance of injuring your arm through handshock. A rigid weapon like a mace or a stick is also more likely to break or be knocked out off your hand when you're striking on horseback compared to a less rigid weapon like a flail. See links: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZLB08i0Tg6I.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L3MonegdQJ8.html
@KnuttyEntertainment
@KnuttyEntertainment 3 года назад
I've also heard that they're meant to counter armor. Because you can't cut full plate, swords don't work very well. So the heavy blunt force of a mace is preferable to batter the armor and get a full transfer of force. But then their opponents just started using shields to counter the heavy and slow striking maces. So they started using flails to wrap around the shields while still delivering comparable force, even if deflected at the chain. Of course, if you're going by which gives most force, then the mace makes it much easier to translate that mechanical advantage than having to maneuver a flail so that you can build up enough rotational momentum.

Someone would either move away or wait till you feel back and tackle your ass. Ain’t no one in the history of the world ever got hit by a big stick who knew it was coming. It’s big, it’s heavy and it’s clumsy. No one and I mean no one is going to stand there and allow you to swing a big heavy stick at them. A few points to put the Nunchaku into historic perspective: 1. When the island of Okinawa (Ryukyu Kingdom) was invaded by the Satsuma they banned all weapons from the Island. As an aftermath the martial art of Kobudo was developed with the goal to utilize farming tools as weapons. Thus the question was never "How can we develop an effective weapon? Let's invent the Nanchaku" but more "What is the best way to use the Nunchaku as a weapon?". The Nunchaku was generally used for agricultural purposes as a flail. Thus the Nunchaku was never designed to serve as a weapon. 2. The way of holding the Nunchaku so close to the link (as demonstrated in this video) is not the way the Nunchaku should be handled. First because you are generating less force and second you are indeed more likely to hit yourself. Also locking the Nunchaku in the armpit is something I have only seen in Bruce Lee movies. 3. It is possible to not hit yourself when hitting a target with full force. Here is a clip from a Japanese martial arts documentary (Budo: The Art of Killing, 1978) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z7AoBm2y7f4.htmlsi=GGQhPc7wQN5Z_Z0a&t=1067 At 18:12 a wooden stick is hit without the Nunchaku hitting back the user. 4. I have a martial arts background myself and have practiced Kobudo. I have never practiced with the Nunchaku (forbidden in my country as "stranglewood") but I can tell that the presenter has never trained in Nunchaku either, except for practicing flashy spins. And I don't find it right that the presenter claims to have experience in the beginning of the video. 5. I agree that a simple stick might be more efficient. However this is a onesided assessment for a weapon. A Nunchaku is more easy to hide and transport than a stick just to give one argument to carry a Nunchaku instead. A knife is even more convenient to carry, but knifes where banned from Okinawa in the past.
@Petayoshi
@Petayoshi 9 месяцев назад
I see another combat advantage of the Nunchaku. The correct way of holding the Nunchakus - both hands at the end of one of the sticks and the link behind your shoulder - allows you to attack from different angles (top-down, down-top, vertical, diagonally) and with different hands without telegraphing your move. This is something you cannot do the same way with a stick
@Petayoshi
@Petayoshi 7 месяцев назад
I found another video from someone who actually knows how to use nunchaku. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GSZ-VBe65Jk.htmlsi=Brg9yVGPIhJgj0za It confirms my assumption that the presenter does not know how to use nunchuks and has never seriously practiced with it. Also from the way he moves I doubt that he has any serious martial arts background
@Knoloaify
@Knoloaify 7 месяцев назад
Point 1 is baseless propaganda. Weapons were already forbidden by King Shō Shin of the Ryukyu kingdom in order to prevent insurrections BEFORE the invasion by Satsuma. And yes Satsuma did also implement a weapon ban...which was in line with basic Japanese law of the time as seen in the Sword Hunt of 1588. It wasn't just the Ryukyu, it was all of Japan. Also the presence of Japanese samurai on the island was quite low as the whole point off the invasion was to allow them to trade with China by pretending to be Ryukyuans. The Japanese presence became more common only much later when Japan annexed the kingdom during the 19th century. The story of the plucky Ryukyuans resisting against evil Japanese samurai with Karate and Nunchunks is a myth.

One thing I've always never been prepared for when I actually brought nunchaku to a real brawl was the recoil. Oh they CAN work, but in different ways than expected. I feel they are equivalent to that of balisongs, if that makes any sense. Tak Kobuta and Fumio Demora really know how to utilize the chucks. I think the flashiness came moreso when they were incorporated in the Filipino arts. I can't remember the word for them in Tagalog. Not saying they are not as efficient. Thanks again for a great video! I also like the title word: Overappreciated. Nunchucks do seem to fall victim to that criticism. However, I would point out that you seem rather less compassionate about the history of the weapon than it may deserve. The weapon (and nearly all other Okinawan based weapons) was developed (please comment historians) when the citizens of Okinawa had all weapons banned by an invading force, and they had to improvise new (often inferior) weapons, that could be found during a search, and passed off as equipment needed for other purposes. The nunchuck was derived from a wheat threshing staff, and was in part designed to look innocuous, like a common farm implement. Any Okinawan resistance fighter who had one would probably dump the thing the moment they were free from fear of searches and confiscation in favor of a more effective weapon. You characterize the weapon as 'mostly used to show off.' I have to agree... currently... just like EVERY OTHER hand weapon used by basically anyone who isn't involved in actively defending either their life or the lives of others today. No offense, but at the end of the day, isn't every medieval weapon and piece of armor you guys carry at least In Part used to show off how tough and skilled you are? Nunchucks are an example of an improvised weapon during hard times. Its advantage over the fighting stick was that the invading army that was actively searching for and confiscating weapons would take your studded, reinforced stick... but probably leave you with the 'wheat thresher.' I would imagine, if they found you with a fighting stick, they may take off your hand or your head as well, just to make an example of you. I'm glad you post the videos that you do. I hope you don't think I don't like them. Still, at the end of the day, I hope it's okay I point out that you seem to miss the point that nunchucks were, historically, an improvised weapon, one used by an oppressed people to overcome a better armed, better trained force, and they deserve respect for their place in history.

I've heard that story multiple times. And although I like the idea, thinking more critically about it, it sounds like a load of crock. If you no longer have effective weapons, farming implements may win the battle, simply due to surprise or arrogance from the traditionally armed guards or soldiers at first. But after the initial shock and awe, those rebelling would either be dead or the rebellion at least cruelly put down so they could continue their work. Like most myths, there is some truth undoubtedly to it, but it is more fiction than fact.

A scythe is a farming tool, a fork is a farming tool, hoe is a farming tool, machete is a farming tool and the list goes on, unless they were prohibited from farming with any tool at all they had at least one or two of that list to farm rice properly and all of those are better weapons than two weights with a rope in between, damn, even a stick, just walk under the closest tree and get a fallen branch break it and is a more effective weapon than what this legend proposes. Also, machetes, scythes and several other kinds of bladed tools are easier to hide and more convincing than the nunchucks. Important to remember that nunchucks require quite a bit of practice to become effective and not be self harming than just a fallen branch that needs no training at all to be as effective as it can be when used by a mob of peasants.

The first thing I see, is that you hold them near the top, like a forms/display practitioner. This gives better control for twirling and spinning and all the cool stuff, but sacrifices power, reach, and some techniques. If you look at the old school, less flashy guys from the 70s (such as Fumio Demura), they hold them near the bottom, similar to how The Scholar-General holds his flail at the bottom. Hold your stick in the middle, and see how it's effectiveness decreases.

Nicely demonstrated. it is true of the chained weapons, 3-sectional, wip-chains, they all have the problem of predicting were they go after they hit the target. Had a friend that got several stitches in his head (woke up in the hospital) after loosing control of his wip chains. He did demonstrations all the time, but you can not control were it goes after it hits something, and can get unlucky. But these weapons have other advantages. Chucks are easier to hide than a stick. And easier to use two of, which using to long sticks would not work out. The chucks can confuse the opponent, likely much easier than a stick. No perfect weapons, they all have + and -. The trick is to be aware of the strengths and weakness of our weapons, and opponents as well.

Man it sucks that Shads entire audience won’t think critically about his methods. By his logic whips and trebuchets are terrible because they can directly transfer bodily force. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5J7fd3KLFX4.html the purpose of a whip is to use the centrifugal force to multiply power. You can’t see that here because he is throwing his weight instead of taking advantage of the rope to increase momentum. He even suggests that’s a myth, it literally how satellites gain speed moving around planets a weight traveling across an arch can multiply acceleration. It’s a physical fact, I’m kinda shocked how he just said that ropes can’t make things move faster when anyone can spin a rock on a rope with just there wrist and make it move blindingly fast. It’s literally how whips work if you just throw a whip at someone it isn’t going to do anything if you flick your wrist right it will break the sound barrier. Our punches and kicks are so powerful because they move through the arch of our joints if we just had stick for arms without elbows we couldn’t do nearly as much damage.

Here's a copy and paste from my other reply: I love nunchaku! Even if they're not the most effective, I'd take them over bats or clubs or any weapon like that any day. (Not arming swords or anything of that sort obviously.) Before YOU DOWNVOTE THIS lol, I'm a third red in taekwondo. The one-thumb-grip would prevent your hand from getting hit from the weapon as often. It might hit weaker than a stick, but let's be real, if they have a helmet both are gonna not be that effective. Even if this was disproven, I'd rather be able to grapple and trap then hit someone so hard their brains fly out. It's still a KO. As for reach, same as said before. They can be less range, but it doesn't really matter if you disarm your opponent! Finally, for recoil strikes, use a slingshot hit and you won't get hit!!!

I'm not here to argue the effectiveness of nunchucks but people should know about some of the history of nunchucks before the comprehensive discussion. Nunchuck (two sectioned stick) is an ancient weapon from China documented with 2500 years of history. Most people knows about nunchuck from Bruce Lee movies or Okinawa's martial artists (they do not considered themselves as Japanese but Chinese still). There are two main types of Chinese weapon categories 1. HARD Weapon such as different types of sword and knife (Chinese interpretation : single edge sharpened = knife 刀, both edges sharpened = sword 劍) , spear, stick, long pole, etc.. And SOFT Weapons such as 9 sectioned chain whip, nunchuck (2 sectioned stick) , 3 sectioned stick, etc.. The application of these weapons are very different. If you only consider the brute force of a particular weapon produced, it may not be fair to its true application originally. For example, nunchucks are much harder to block if applied properly by true expert. Also, one of the lethal application of nunchuck is to struggle the opponent's neck with ease applying the leverage of the sticks. So comparing apples to oranges is meaningless... My 2 cents

I'm curious what your thoughts are on 3 sectioned and 2 sectioned staffs, they have a very long history of being used in china and definitely lessen if not nullify some of the disadvantages you have brought up while preserving some of the advantages. Advantages being not having to deal with shock from strikes, wrapping around something to then still hit the opponent or disarm them, and very tricky faints. On the third point, I have done weapons sparring with and against small shield/buckler and flail and you can very easily redirect the angle a flail is coming towards an opponent mid-strike, potentially making it very difficult to defend against. I would score hits and get hit by this tactic all the time, flail comes from the side you go to block, aggressor flicks their wrist and all fo a sudden it circles around from above or below while coming across.

That said, in the original TMNT comics they didn't specialize in any specific weapons, they all used a variety of different tools and weapons depending on the situation. It wasn't until the cartoon series that they got their signature weapons and color-coding, to make them easier to tell apart on TV but mostly for merchandising reasons (why make it so parents only have to buy their kids one Turtle, when they can each be different and they have to buy four?)

Ha-been practicing with the "chucks" since 75' when I saw Bruce Lee in the movies. I even made my own and would train with heavy metal "chucks" and when I switched over to wood they would fly like a propeller blade. Sure, they looked impressive and all and would be great against an unarmed opponent, but when I tried them on a poor Halloween jack-o-lantern one night, the recoil ended up beating the hell out of my arms and hands. Still love them as they are one of the few skills I've ever accomplished.

@@counterstrike89 What do you mean you disagree? Acrobattybun just mentioned a fact about Bruce Lee's life. And to counter your point: saying "this weapon is an extension of your hand" is an overplayed trope. Literally every single hard piece of material that you can use to hit people with, is an "extension" of your hand. As shad has shown: using a simple, pragmatic, easily acquired long wooden club, is far superior in every single practically objective way imaginable, save for raw intimidation tactics. If indeed a person is extremely skilled, like this Ken Hill fellow that you mention, then it's highly likely he would be EVEN more deadly with a simple wooden club. That, or to put it very simply: from a sheer combat-effectiveness standpoint, he has wasted his time learning how to expertly use an impractical weapon. Time he could have used to become an expert in a much more practical weapon. (Naturally people who pour years into expertise for martial arts weapons, or plain martial arts anyway, simply do it out of a hobby and/or because they may make money off of their expertise. Nobody really "needs" to be proficient with these things in a world with guns, from a self-defense point of view) Furthermore: you say you don't want to run into him if he's wielding nunchucks. Well, would you like to run into him if he's wielding a wooden club? The same principle applies. And lastly, if indeed Ken Hill were to attack me with nunchucks, then provided I had a wooden club myself, I believe I could effectively take him out before he could take me out. I say this as somebody who is completely unskilled in any type of weaponry. This is because wielding a large wooden stick-like object is incredibly easy. All you need is force, a good grip and a good stance. I have a reach advantage, and as shown in this vid, he will likely be able to generate less force with the nunchucks, thereby greatly increasing my chances to take him out first. Not that it's a competition. In any case, your counter-argument makes no sense from a practical point of view. Nobody is denying that nunchucks CAN be deadly, but there is no POINT to using them when a solid wooden club does the same trick better. And he'll DEFINITELY get hurt if he attempts to use the nunchucks in the same way as a person would use a club, hence why he will likely generate even LESS force because he has to compensate for it. Long story short: the nunchucks are dumb, big stick energy all the way.

The guy who taught me nunchaku (sp? that's what he told me) taught me twirling but said that in a real fight, he would ignore that. For self defense, we practiced hitting a water cooler, the kind with the big bottle on top. We would start from "not ready" positions and try to get max velocity into a hard (probably bone breaking) impact and leave it just hanging in the air. You can get quitr good at it. I have no doubt that one such strike would be enough, if it hit the head it would break bone. He had a pair he drilled out and filled with lead, that would work. He was very good, as good as Bruce Lee in that movie where he did the nunchaku. You don't need to cave the skull, cracking it will do, concussion, unconsciousness. Also, for home defense, you don't have to worry that the bad guy gets to your weapon first, he almost certainly can't use it against you.

It's as you said at the beginning of the video. They're better than nothing. They were rumored to be an improvised weapon made from a horse bridle (if I remember correctly) that a peasant who was prohibited from owning weapons would have access to. But I never quite believed that. I suspect it was more a skill / kata / training tool later in martial arts, because as you point out, why waste time with that when a simple Jo (stick) or Staff is just varying lengths of stick. A Jo was a tool handle (Ho, Axe, etc.) and a Bo could be a simple walking stick of Broomstick. So the peasants ALREADY had access to BETTER weapons than the nunchuck. It's whole lore as a practical weapon just seems fully mythological to me.

Being a life-long student of Kung Fu, I have met many people whose skill with nunchucks was more than adequate. And yet, I cannot recall one person to mind who would prefer them, over any other weapon, no matter the situation. However, they do have worth as a training aid. It can be quite a challenge to teach some students to think in terms of one object rotating around another. Nunchucks, can help with this. When you "get it right" you feel a sense of accomplishment. And when you "get it wrong", you get a little bite. You could say that they are very effective at teaching humility. Also worth mentioning, their presence in Chinese martial arts predates purpose-built agricultural flails. That might seem difficult to believe, on the surface. But what is nunchucks, if not a broken stick, with a few fibers holding each end together? You can probably easily imagine what would eventually happen to a piece of fresh-cut, green bamboo in a prolonged fight. Especially if your enemy were better equipped than you. So, not only do you train with the stick, but with the broken stick. Because, eventually, every stick breaks. Historically, Kung Fu has been an art for the underdogs. I do love nunchucks, but not for their value as a weapon. I love that even garbage (a broken stick) has much to teach. :)

two possible advantages on the nunchuck versus a stick may be concealment and negation of shield. You can get for half the length when stored a similar impact for from a stick twice the length. So a person may carry a folded nunchuck in his backpocket or inside his coat, somewhat concealing it, while when deployed having the imapct energy of a stick twice the length of the folded nunchuck. Also if you where to face a person with a shield, you may have a way to negate this shield similar to a flail. Not sure if these two reasons warant nunchucks, but they are to consider.

I feel this was more like "Underappreciated Historical Weapons:Stick are great" than the actual title

wdym underappreciated, stick is oldest human weapon and is still used to our day and if we count pointy sticks, it's literally the most common weapon in history

@@user-hf2uf8wb7k When you mention "pointy sticks" I'm suddenly thinking of the Monty Python sketch; self-defense against fruit. While a stick would be a long-standing weapon I'd rather use a tonfa because at least those can be held along your forearms or perpendicular to your arms

"Sticks are great" but according to this video a stick that has been broken in half and has been put back together with a piece of rope or chain is not so great.

@@user-hf2uf8wb7k The appreciation of the stick is much higher today than just 10 years ago, in part due to people like Shad. There's now a strong community of amateur historical research and experimental archeology into martial arts, with an increasing number of semi-professionals like Shad (professional RU-vidr, semi-professional historian), which seems to have been triggered by the project of rediscovering historical European martial arts, where the tradition has been broken and must be rediscovered from "dead" sources. I've been a great proponent of the stick for more than 30 years, myself. Even today, though, if you ask an average person to equip a fantasy warrior, you'll see mostly swords, followed by axes, maces, and bows. You'll see some needlessly complex pole-arms, and lances for mounted use, but the humble stick in its simplest form is unlikely to show up. A pointed stick, around the length of a man's height, is the most prolific weapon in human history and prehistory, and arguably the ultimate ancestor of almost all other weapons. It has always been appreciated by those who have used it, but that's not the same as getting the appreciation it deserves. Even today, even with newfound literacy about historical weapons, the stick is underappreciated. If I've made it seem that the underappreciation of the stick is a new thing, I must apologize. Already 2400 years ago, Socrates, the founder of Western philosophy, complained that the pointed stick was underappreciated, and that inferior weapons like the sword were getting all the attention (especially among the youth; complaining about the decadence of younger generations isn't a new thing, either). The even simpler non-pointed stick was ignored even by Socrates (of course relevant manuscripts may have been lost).

Good video. I like the polypropylene straight batons or fibreglass straight batons. They generate more force as you have pointed out. These weapons don't require any maintenance. Swivel nunchakus have to be oiled periodically.
