Overclocked + Fully Modded Mega Drive - Comparing Mods Enabled/Disabled - SEGA Genesis

In this video I show my overclocked and fully modified PAL Sega Mega Drive. It has been overclocked to have the option of running at 10Mhz instead of the standard factory 7Mhz. As well as being overclocked it has also been region modded to play games at either 50/60Hz - PAL/NTSC and language modded to play in either English or Japanese. I have also added extra video and stereo outputs to the rear of the console.
I give a brief description of what all the mods do then I show some comparison footage of games running with and without the mods enabled.
My Mega Drive is hooked up to a 1080p Sony Bravia HDTV via RGB Scart. The picture quality I get from it is stunning. The colours are vibrant and the image is extremely clear/sharp. I've taken some stills to compare the difference between RGB Scart and Composite.
RGB Scart images,
Sonic - tinyurl.com/3ka...
Streets Of Rage 2 - tinyurl.com/3pq...
Composite images,
Sonic - tinyurl.com/4yl...
Streets Of Rage 2 - tinyurl.com/3vz...
The tutorial I followed to overclock the console was by thedamomonster.
Check out his channel here for a ton of great vids..

Thanks for watching!

The reason alot of users on this thread are confused and commenting that their copy of Sonic 2 never played the music that slow is simply because it didn't, Sonic 2 was optimised for PAL regions, and also you booted your copy of Sonic 2 in 60Hz and then switched it over to 50Hz resulting in the strange slower music. Maybe next time try booting it in 50Hz first so people can see how the game really looks and sounds in PAL territories.

Get Mickey Mania (Japanese version) for The mega drive, and use some mod like this. Turn on the console while on English. The game will start and say: 'For use only on Sega Mega Drive'. If you switch the game to Japanese while this screen appears, It will say 'Oh... This system has apparently changed to a Sega Mega Drive', and the game will start. You can also do this on an emulator. Pretty funny if you ask me.

Under most circumstances you don't see slowdown in that animation. But notice the example used in the video is a very particular section of the game where the console is being pushed to it's limits (sonic 2, 2 player split screen, multiple sprites/animations occurring simultaneously). Your Mega Drive will also show slowdown at this section unless modified.

Aaah a fantastic modification! I got me a nice HD graphics non TMSS Megadrive. I would love to mod it but I don't think I will be able to see the small parts or use a soldering iron but I am still happy with it, I have the Game Genie too and action replay so I can have everlasting presents in Toejam & Earl :D Don't worry about Sonic 2, it was slow probably because the MD was booted in 60Hz. Sonic 1 truely will rumn slow at 50 Hz but Sonic 2 was adapted.

@paulspydar The region mod is very easy and only requires very basic soldering. the Overclock is a bit harder but nothing to complex. Check out thedamomonster's channel (link in the description). He has easy to follow tutorials on all of this stuff :)

Most games do not use the composite video blending effect. But besides that small detail, Sonic still looks soooo much better in RGB through SCART. You have to really try it in person to believe it.

Nice mods. You've kept your Mega Drive well looked after too! I was a SNES player back in the day and ended up selling my UK SNES to purchase an import US model. Thanks to Super Play for educating me about the 50hz 60hz issue. I believe the Sega Dreamcast was the first PAL console released with the ability of switching between 50 & 60Hz out of the box.

@keearun First measured and marked out the areas to cut with a pencil. Then I used a very small drill bit to cut a pilot hole. Then I used a set of precision files to cut a rectangular hole for the switches to fit through.

I'm from Portugal. The contest was televised trough a very popular PT games show. SONY always had a strong love affair with my country due to the PT gamers being some 80% SONY centric, with the remaining 20% spread trough the remaining platforms (excluding PCs, which were omnipresent but never a threat). The contest was sponsored by Toyota. Every contestant had to use the same car on the same track in arcade mode. The car was the Toyota Supra, and the track was Trial Mountain. To be continued...

Yeah, for some reason the Mega Drive has particularly bad composite video, but especially excellent RGB video compared to other consoles I've tried. SNES has much better video through composite, but the video through RGB seems to be a little less sharp and colorful than the Mega Drive.

Continued from my previous post, here's a little story. In my country, back in 98 there was a Nation-wide Gran Turismo 2 contest. I didn't have the PAL version of the game, i had a J-NTSC copy burrowed from a friend, along with an imported Japanese console, and that's what i used to train, as my friend wasn't interested in the contest (he's a J-RPG kind of guy). I didn't know about the whole 60Hz issue at the time, but coming from the J-game, i was shocked when i got my hands in the PAL version.

And it wans't just on the 8 and 16bit consoles either. The PSX also suffered from PAL conversions. The PS2 did as well, but a lot of games had the option to change between 50 and 60Hz. The console handled the conversion, so as long as the TV supported 60Hz, we'd be golden. However, most TVs had limited support for 60Hz (if at all), in which they did display the image, but not the color, so we'd end up with a B&W picture. This is where the "magic" RGB cable made it's debut and fixed that problem.

Back in the day, my PAL MD seemed pretty spiffy and I often wondered what everyone was bitching about... now its blatantly obvious what a crappy deal we got. 17% is a big speed loss and it makes the Sonic 2 tunes really pop when they are played at their intended speed :) Thanks for showing this off.

@SonikkuHedgehog Hmmm, at that point the console is running stock so It's probably just the acoustics of the room and way the camera's mic picked it up. The built-in mic tends to pick up higher frequencies better than lower.

Great video, I had no idea that us Americans were missing out on such great image quality from that Scart hookup. Is there some mod I can perform on a Genesis (as opposed to a MD) that would let me achieve that look on a modern TV?
@RetroGameTech
@RetroGameTech 11 лет назад
Sorry but composite simply looks terrible compared to RGB Scart. It's washed out, blurry and technically inferior. There's really no argument to it. I used composite cables for years before upgrading to proper RGB Scart. The difference is night and day. No way I'd ever go back.
@RetroGameTech

The Mega Drive natively outputs RGB through it's AV port. Just hook up the correct RGB Scart cable and you're all set.

I found that many of the megadrives people have problems with overclocking are the best ones to overclock, for example people cut the trace going to b15 and solder thier clock wire to it, for near perfect results un solder pin b15 from the board and bend it up away from the board and then solder your clock wire to it. Thumbs up if this works for you.

Actually, for some import games, especially later titles, the language mod is needed as well if you want to play Japanese games on a PAL Mega Drive pr US Genesis. Some games use it as a region lock-out, so to play a Japanese game, you need to boot up the system in 60Hz and the Jp language setting, Genesis 60&Eng, PAL 50&Eng.

Good ol' Mega drive. I now that Sonic 1 on my PAL console is really slow compared to NTSC, but I'm guessing the optimization of Sonic 2 and 3 is true, as all seems fine with them. Nice mods, though! I like the green light, neat touch. Also moan the scots!

Flicker is a combination of hardware limitations (only so many sprites can be displayed on any given scanline) and programming tricks (so instead of making some objects disappear entirely, it just makes all of them partially visible). So nothing can be done about that, as far as I know. Overclocking will, however, make the system less prone to slowdown, as you saw in this video. (Too many sprites will still cause flicker, but the system will be able to process them at full speed.)

@Grobda You are correct. It seems like the Sonic 2 used in the vid was US version, because if that would have been PAL Sonic 2 it would have gone into chipmunk mode at 60hz. :) Sonic 2 PAL version was speed adjusted to compensate PALs about 17% slower speed. Sonic 1 (and several other games) was unfortunately very crappily ported and really needs that 60hz switch to play correctly here in PAL. :/

People usually only play COD for one year. Then they get the new version and never play the old one again. People have been playing sonic for 20 years because the gameplay holds up to this day an doesn't rely on other people being online for it to be intertaining. So no: Overall COD is not better than Sonic. I'm glad you enjoy COD. I played it too at one point. What ever rocks your boat. For the record: having technical skills and being able to repair things is not sad or out dated.

awesome vid mate , yeah on the example on sonic that is kinda odd because on 50hz the music doesnt sound like that, as far as i know the music is optimized on the pal version, did you start the game in 60hz and the switch to 50hz? because if you start the game right on 50hz the music sound like the ntsc version though =)

Continued. The Hz deal had to do with the PAL standard which covers the entirety of Europe. Region locking was something else, but it ended being associated with the PAL/NTSC deal. Even if you used a GEN cartridge with an MD card (the game card inside both cartridges are virtually the same) it wouldn't run due to the region locking. HOWEVER, there were adapters that circumvented the reg-lock so there WAS a way to play MD games on a GEN, and vice-versa. I saw one once but don't remember where.

Everything about this Megadrive of yours looks awesome, apart from an obvious oddity with the sound. When Chemical Plant Zone's music kicked in properly (and the horn in the background of Mystic Cave), the output was far from correct. I don't know whether that would be the TV you are using or the Megadrive, but it didn't sound correct. Just thought you should know.

Continued from previous post. The PAL GT2 was much slower than what i was already used to in the J-NTSC game. The result is that all of a sudden the game was too easy for me as i had a lot more time to correct trajectories while racing. The contest begins and i start winning non-stop until i'm at the finals. (over 5000 participants) At the finals i make the most absurd mistake and spin my car in the last turn. I finished the contest in 3rd place because of that. 60Hz training made the difference
