In this video we will try overclocking our 22-year-old iiyama Vision Master Pro 512 CRT Monitor and see if we can reach a stable and usable refresh rate of 300 or even over 350 Hz. The CRT technology is by design still the fastest gaming monitor technology available. And this iiyama monitor here is considered to be the fastest CRT gaming monitor ever built, together with its brother, the iiyama Vision Master Pro 514. We are using Windows 11 together with a modern Nvidia display driver for these tests.

People commenting about LCDs and OLEDs are missing the point. Yes, they're wrong. But also... this technology is 100 (ONE HUNDRED) and more years old. In theory. Even if we consider only the production TV tubes, we're talking about 60 years at least. Incredible. Just playing Ghost of Tsushima on my FW... incredible experience. Sadly, totally not transferrable over RU-vid or any screenshots.

Is it best to use GTF for timing when creating a custom resolution? What adapter are you using with your graphics card to connect to the crt? Thanks!
@RetroGamingBase
@RetroGamingBase 8 дней назад
Hey I use GTF because it’s a old standard and I never had problems with it. I never bothered trying anything else as I just want it to work😀 As Adapter I use a Delock DP to VGA Adapter that has a very high pixel clock. My next video this weekend will be about that Adapter 😀

@HyperMario64 18 дней назад
That's crazy. I guess you need to decrease the resolution to keep the signal into the same bandwidth. Do you know if there are people modding these to have a high refresh rate, high resolution digital input? Probably needs to change a lot of things on the circuit but the tube itself probably allows it 🤔

@RetroGamingBase
@RetroGamingBase 19 дней назад
Sadly not all CRTs are unlocked. Some will just refuse to go over the value that has been programmed for them. The iiyama 512/514 Series are the only totally unlocked CRTs that I know but some members of the community here have posted that they have reached like 400Hz interlaced with a Nokia CRT. Interlaced is not totally the same as the thing I show here though! But just to be total clear! This is just a play around thing! No one needs more than 100Hz on a CRT Monitor and I hope you take my word for that, seeing that I have a tiny bit experience with CRTs 😉 With 100Hz a CRT is absolutely flicker free and because of the fact that it’s a CRT, it’s already faster than any other Monitor tech out there so no need to risk damage to your CRT just to reach some number 😀 Still I think it would be a nice news flash if suddenly the first and only 600Hz Gaming Monitor of this planet were a CRT from 2002 😂🤣
@melon7592
@melon7592 19 дней назад
@@RetroGamingBase ohh ok RIP, but i will have to disagree with you on the "you dont need more than 100hz on CRT", while flicker is not noticeable when not moving your eyes a lot like when looking at desktop or a slow game, but for fast games like OSU where you need to move your eyes across the screen a lot it is very noticeable, and you do need as much Hz as possible, even at 160hz for me the stroboscopic effect is very noticeable and i think that to eliminate it completely it might take something like 700hz or even more
@RetroGamingBase
@RetroGamingBase 19 дней назад
@@melon7592 hehe I just checked out OSU and yeah, I see your point there! Yeah if you have very fast or competitive games I think you profit from more Hz if you lower your settings or resolution to get the high FPS also! Back in the day we played Quake3 Arena with picmip settings and vortex lights (if I remember correctly) to get as fast and clear as possible 😄

Please don't kill your CRT. That's a beautiful monitor and nice and high-end. playing on that thing at 300 frames per second is probably just glass clarity
@mmedits8186
@mmedits8186 18 дней назад
What’s the reasoning behind it? How are the older monitors soo much more clock able ?
@RetroGamingBase
@RetroGamingBase 18 дней назад
Well they usually aren’t. These iiyama here are a bit special in that regard because no one bothered to lock them vertically. So as long as you stay within the horizontal KHz limit you can get crazy refresh rates here 😄
@ViciousVinnyD
@ViciousVinnyD 8 дней назад
Analogue monitors draw pixel by pixel, left to right, top to bottom, like writing a page of text. It can only draw so quickly, so by making the image smaller it can complete a whole frame faster, allowing you to run a higher refresh rate. High resolution monitors like this one draw incredibly fast, so by cutting the resolution down you can double or even triple it's refresh rate.

i'm jealous of this, and I'm a professional half life player, my 19" crt monitor can only do 96khz and I can't go above 160hz+. that's why I can play 640x480 160hz or 720x540 160hz half life. i really can't imagine what 200+hz would look like, it should be much smoother.. crts are superior technology I have a 4k ips monitor in my house, but I threw it in the trash, it can't replace the crt :D

Hey that’s very interesting hearing that from you then! Yeah I heard many pro gamers also still love these old beauties here. Is it hard to get a CRT in your region? If you prefer 19“ then there is a twin of this one also available as 19“ and by far not so expensive I think! 😀
@Mami.The.HL1
@Mami.The.HL1 12 дней назад
@@RetroGamingBase yes, playing fps games with crt is always an advantage, especially games like Half life are the best calibrated games for crt, so when I play hl, I beat all my competitors, I don't experience motion blur, there's no one better than me :) I also live in Turkey, there used to be a lot of CRTs, but now there are only 17" CRTs. I don't have much of a budget problem, but it's really hard to find a good crt. i haven't come across any crt over 19" in the last 5 months.

sorry to say but you were incorrect saying its the fastest gaming monitor Alienware has a 24.5" 1080p monitor that can hit 500Hz overclocked or 480hz not overclocked over DP (at least if you just mean hz rate alone), and as a bonus you get an actual usable resolution! and there are a number of 360hz OLED options now too with 480Hz OLEDs announced and on their way.
@dark666king
@dark666king 18 дней назад
The only person incorrect here is you. Go actually read some technical reviews with measurements of what FPS you can display on those high refresh rate monitors because there are millions of LCDs that advertise 165hz/240hz... yet can barely reach 30fps (33.34ms latency) in actual motion and everything faster being displayed as ghosting blurry mess. CRTs on the other hand - you get the full speed it says, because it takes way less than 1ms to draw and redraw whole screen on them.
@Ridiric
@Ridiric 18 дней назад
@@dark666king OLED, also unless its ancient (well ancient by current tech progress standards) or just absolute trash tier, you wont find a high refresh LCD that can only display at 33.3ms, 10ms sure, maybe even 15ms, plenty at 5ms (even if they advertise 1ms, probably gonna be 5 to 10ms), OLED however does achieve sub 1ms. And as stated above, you get an actual usable resolution! how neat!
@dark666king
@dark666king 18 дней назад
@@Ridiric Are you dumm-dumm or are you pretending? Advertisement doesn't matter, technical reviewers measurements DO matter and show time after time that monitors can't display the motion at the refresh rate they advertise to support. Btw 15ms is abysmal, for your information 30fps = 33.34ms, 60fps = 16.667ms, 120fps 8.34ms, 240fps 4.167ms, 240Hz monitor IMPLIES it can display 240FPS, yet 99% of the units at the market cant physically handle it because their panels are simply too slow at drawing and redrawing image. Go educate yourself and see monitor reviews.

dismissing the video while ignoring the specific type of screen being a CRT which is still considered faster than many modern screens on that period advertising over 120hz or even 200hz, I do remember some lcd screens boasting even 300hz but they were all recalled from retail stores, I wonder why...
