For this video, I wanted to see if we can utilize the new CRT filters recently added to the RetroTINK 5x and MiSTer to make the ‘LCD CRT” kit look more like a real CRT. This is not a “deep dive” and the PVM I used wasn’t even calibrated (or color corrected) - This is just a fun experiment with some decent visual examples.

Everytime i watch something like this, it reminds me of the countless CRT Tvs I trashed when repairing college apartments. The students would just leave them after they left. And we trashed them all. I love HD LCD’s but really miss the classic games look on CRT’s. It seemed like CRT’s disappeared (from retailers) overnight once LCD’s & Plasma displays appeared regardless of how much this new tech costed. My first LCD was a 40” and cost $4700 and it produced glorious images. I can’t explain why but I bought a pair of 14” Flat screen CRT’s that have component, composite & S-Video inputs just before CRT’s disappeared from retail shelves.

I feel like a great way of fixing the problems a digital TV has displaying analog would be to make an LCD display that reads the analog signal and then draws it in the same line-by-line fashion instead of converting it to a digital picture. I think that if the LEDs lit up in a sweeping scanline-like pattern, not only would it have essentially no lag compared to a CRT, but it may even work with light guns like the SNES super scope.
@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7
@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 Год назад
If only panel drivers and digital video output standards that could do this were a thing... You'd still need to fake the CRT mask, scanline pattern (or maybe stick a CRT mask overlay on the panel itself) And in the case of an emulator on a computer, you'd additionally need to fake analog degradation, and come up with a complete display pipeline that also worked natively on a scanline by scanline basis at every stage, from the emulator to the operating system to the GPU to the monitor. And you'd also need a pretty decent scaler on the display driver circuit that lit all the pixels that belong in the same virtual scanline together in a CRT sweeping motion and interpolated the input accurately as it scales to fill the panel. It's technically possible to simulate a CRT scan entirely digitally on a modern LCD display, but it would require tons of custom display hardware and software and even a custom output format to do it _properly,_ and reach virtually nonexistent latency land like real analog hardware. The modern display pipeline is just designed around full frames the entire way through.

While I find that I can totally play any classic 50 or 60 scrolling games on an lcd, the one thing that's always present is that it feels like I'm looking at an image of it as opposed to the real thing. I can get used to the scrolling or fast movement of sprites being just a massive blur but it's as if I'm not looking at the original image by the fact that delay robs a sense of being part of the scene or moment. I'd honestly be happy enough to use lcd with filters if that's all we had because they do a decent job honestly but there really is only one way to play your older machines if you want the best experience and that's on a crt

I wonder how close RT5X Pro's CRT simulate is to GBS-C's bob deinterlacing + scanlines? I more recently heard that it's a thing you can do with the GBS-C, and I was surprised by how good it looked and how the flicker changed with the line filter enabled. It sounds like the idea is similar to what CRT simulate does? Only problem is that I don't have the clockgen installed yet, and even though the tearing doesn't bother me normally, it becomes absolutely obnoxious with bob + scanlines + bright background 😅 looks like a light bar sweeps across the screen vertically every 5 seconds or so.

CRT Simulate looks amazing! Does it base it's interlacing on the incoming sync signal? If so, then presumably if that sync signal starts sending the same one every frame, then effectively CRT simulate would automagically and seamlessly become 240p right? Would that solve the Chrono Cross problem for good?

Pausing the video for a moment: The one thing I always see in the masks on the MiSTeR is that they show a pattern of lines, it's almost as if the mask is created with a, just for an example, 20x20 thumbnail of the mask, then patched together to fill the screen. I wonder, would there be a way for the mask creators to make a giant, randomized looking mask. The consistency of the pattern is too noticeable for me, unlike the CRT where the mask seems to be not dependent on a pattern, just "random" points. Hope this makes sense!
@wiegraf9009
@wiegraf9009 2 года назад
I think the "randomness" in the mask is likely caused by 1) the tube being larger than the viewable area. There is part of it that will be behind the front assembly of the CRT, and 2) the CRT (even a "flatscreen") being convex, so the mask is not as even as on an lcd.

I wish these iPad screens where 14"-15" big. That would been perfect. I've bought one of these screens on Amazon, and it works quite good. But just a quick warning, if you plan to use the micro USB for power, be very gentle pushing it in. I managed to break the contact (it fell of from the LCD motherboard) since it was only soldered on two spots (with no holes in to the motherboard). The motherboards chip also gets really hot, and should have a heatsink on. Anyone else got this problem? Mine works fine for a while but when it gets to hot there is some problems.

I don't have a pvm, but regular 20ish inch tvs from the late 90s, one is a sony trinitron but my panasonic is actually the better looking crt. I did tweak some shader values to get it a little closer to my crts, like the screen warp amount and bloom effects and colors overall. Probably the bigger improvememt you can do is use oled to get a better contrast ratio and black levels, as my cheapo lcd screen is a single zone backlit so it's rather washed out in darker scenes in comparison

Pretty cool. I guess get rid of some ipads. I hope to see a review of the checkmate monitor. It's a actual low resolution LCD panel. Hopefully low latency and looks nice. For the old vga computer. With a upscaler like retro tink or OSSC it can scale it easy to native resolution. Some rts games i know are set to one resolution. So the upscaler will help. Hey also come computer cores from the mister i guess. I need a bigger size thou. Hey if i end up using a upscaler anyways this could be ok. You said low latency so..... Usually just hook up to the tv and not worry about it. With some sort of upscaler of course.

awesome! this monitor is super cheap too, however, it would be cool to have more oled panels from china in this price range. i'll attempt a displayport-hdmi mod on a 15.6" laptop oled panel and give it a go with mister in the future. it'll still have sample and hold motion blur, but look more like a crt. the next big hurdle IMO is getting rid of motion blur, since these filters look OK, esp when you consider lots of CRTs we play on have imperfect geometry/convergence anyhow. BFI and high refresh rate scaling should be the next for retrotink et al

@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 2 года назад
Good question, but its not that simple. In theory, that MIGHT work with TV and movies that were all formatted the same. Each analog video console outputted multiple, weird resolutions...so much like the CRT mask filters draw the lines across the exact pixels, you'd need an overlay for each resolution on each console, in each scaled mode. Also, you'd have to compensate for each display's overscan. So, I guess the answer is "probably...but no". Hope that makes sense!

With the amount of pashion and entrepreneurialship in the retro scene, I'm pretty confident that +10 years fron now, there will be "simulated CRT TVs" that use some 4K high refresh rate OLED panels with black frame insertion and simulated scanlines and shadowmasks and whatnot. Obviously those panels need to get down in price to become super viable, and I'm thinking the black frame insertion would probably be more tuned for this particular use case, but I have no doubt people will come up with some crazy and impressive replacements for CRTs eventually, out of desire to keep the spirit and look of these games, to retain the experience.
@MrNapkino

I doubt oled will still be the dominant display in 10 years lol, oled is just lcd with better blacks and slightly better motion. Still have the issue of imperfect motion regardless of what you apply to it, unfortunately. I can see a true crt successor coming out, but it won’t be until the patent for lpds end.
@shotgunmasterQL
@shotgunmasterQL 2 года назад
@@MrNapkino "Slightly better motion" sounds a bit hyperbolic, though. TN/TFT are fast but even then OLED is several times faster in pixel transitions. But with TN/TFT you are still sacrificing on many other picture quality fronts, while OLED also performs great at many fronts, making it a pretty attractive for this sort of experimenting. I can't say I have ever paid much attention to the difference in motion performance, up until just recently, but using black frame insertion/backlight flicker on LCD can already improve motion performance quite a bit, and that applies to OLED as well. I have seen a CRT in real life just in the past 2 years with a more critical mind, and the motion performance is quite magical, but I dont think we are getting anything equally good or better until sample and hold is dead, and who knows if that's happening at all. OLED adopted sample and hold, so who's to say that something like micro LED wouldn't do the same. That's why I think some sort of high res OLED panel with high refresh rate would be quite useful for the purpose. Resolution for ultra accurate shadowmask filters built into it, and refresh rate so that the beam/dimming of older lines could be simulated to some degree, which could work as some sort of BFI as well. Even if it isn't exactly like real CRT TV, with the old tubes being guaranteed to die off, I'm confident that the retro scene will start experimenting with stuff like this, out of necessity and will to preserve the old feel of the tubes.
@MrNapkino
@MrNapkino 2 года назад
@@shotgunmasterQL yeah as someone who uses CRTs almost daily, modern displays are just so bad with motion in comparison that I honestly prefer a crt running composite than an lcd with hdmi lol. Motion is just way too important for the games I play to sacrifice it, and the lack of ANY audio/visual lag is just so good, and is also another thing you unfortunately can’t replicate with modern displays. It’s a shame the latest RetroTink firmware makes footage more CRT-like for flat panels, but removes the CRT downscaling option for playing on actual CRTs.

@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 2 года назад
It's be more like $3000-$10,000. The only reason CRT's were so cheap over the years, is because they built massive factories to make them in bulk. Having to essentially hand-make each one would take a week or more for each one.

Yep, flat panels with a rolling flicker and better brightness compensation caused by the flicker plus the scanline filters are going to be needed to get more satisfactory CRT like results. But this is all already a good start!

Why does no one make a 24"+, 4:3 aspect (!), 1080p/1440p, low lag/latency (1ms), FreeSync compatible monitor? In other words 'made for emulation gaming'. One would believe that the emu-market is rather big and this would sell like hotcakes. (And oh, if it was prepped for friendly arcade cab mounting as well, it would just be superawesome). Please, someone, please. #LG #Sony #Samsung #Asus #Eizo #whoever ...
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 2 года назад
Because to ramp up production on something like that would either mean you'd have to sell 100,000 units at $200...or they'd be $3500 each in low quantities. Good question though.
@flottenheimer
@flottenheimer 2 года назад
@@RetroRGB is 100,000 units unrealistic (seriously)? I'd gladly pay, say, $500-$800 for a monitor with those specs ($3500 seems a bit steep though). And there are just so many exotic, non-standard monitors out there, like the square Eizo EV2730Q-BK and even the 20.1" LG 4:3 LCD Arcade Monitor (which is the closest match I've been able to find, but the response time is a too slow 6.5ms) at $269.
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 2 года назад
I honestly wouldn't have known any of this, if I wasn't involved in product manufacturing myself. The best example is flat-panel TV's. Remember when they were first released? The cheapest one was like $15,000. It was only when companies built billion dollar manufacturing facilities and starting selling them in extremely large quantities that they got affordable. We're lucky now that it's much cheaper to modify an existing design (and manufacturing), but my price guess is pretty accurate: That Eizo is $1500.

Unfortunately it's not as good as CRT Royale is right now. Not even close. As far as retro gaming on LCD goes, it's probably still better to just emulate with Retroarch with CRT Royale. With automatic frame delay and runahead nowadays, input lag isn't a problem for the vast majority of retro gaming that would benefit from playing at an CRT anyway, except maybe N64. PSX already can run Runahead with the correct core. I understand the argument for playing in retro consoles (as I personally does have an CRT for playing my retro consoles). Playing at LCD with real consoles is so much of a hassle that it might be just cheaper to build an PC with enough horsepower to properly play Retroarch with all the good things that it does have right now. I used to avoid Retroarch and software emulation as a whole since input lag bothers me a lot. But nowadays, it's a different story. It does have an learning curve to setup but once it's done, it really can't get much better then this.

So, I USED to agree with you, back when "scanlines" were just generated as horizontal lines. Those mostly just annoyed me. These are totally different though...and totally worth trying if you have an RT5x!
