i've avoided Futur vids with Melinda, because her iffyness, insecurities and confusion always made me feel uncomfortable. but its only because there is a huge part of me that is just like her. and its so great how Chris explains how to reframe certain thoughts and self-deprecation into forward thinking and growth oriented angles to help you get through these mental obstacles. I appreciate Melinda and her contribution to the Futur...i totally relate! thank you!
I'm not in design, but Chris is such an inspiration, and such a captivating speaker, his ideas and mindset is just incredible. I just want to walk next to him all day and learn. And I'm not even in design lol. I'm studying marketing but Chris has really made me interested in design so I've just learned photoshop. I don't know why or how he does it but he's seriously one of the most interesting people I "know". So inspirational, thank you Chris for being public so I can take part of what you do!
🔛 still trying to Beat the beast. It is for me a daily struggle. Especially when you are not graduated from a design or art school. You always feel like an imposter. But i try to focus on the resolution of my clients issues. And it is a Big accomplishment when you solve their business problem. Thank you so much Chris for your pure quality content. It help me a lot! I have learn so much in 6 month! This format 30min is perfect 😉 keep it up !
This guy literally doesn't know what playing the odds are. He said just cause one animal may be dangerous doesn't mean you shouldn't try.. that's darwinism at its finest... Maybe there is a language barrier. If you can explain how he changed you life. I will give you nine high fives and sing you a song called don't get duped by sudo imtelctuall dipshits.
I’ve been thinking of what the future holds for RU-vid and I just found it. This type of content. Imagine a 30 to 1hr video like this in a world of 5-10minute videos and still out stand them all. Your content defies the trends. I knew it is possible to not be limited into 5-10minutes and yet have viewers so glued. Love your content!!
I really like the high contrast style of this video. Nicely done. I also used to like the high key black and white that you and Jose used to do. Looked really sharp. Keep up the great work! One thing about social media. The easiest way to start for me has been to just start sharing all kinds of content, especially on Twitter. And don't forget to be social. Ask questions, share the work of others, engage in discussion, talk to the people that matter. They're on Twitter because they want to engage. It's a real leveler. I appreciate the transparency of your conversations. Many thanks to Melinda, too. It's not easy to be open about your fears in front of 150K people. Kudos.
Chris is like the Obi Wan Kenobi of Design, I often think "what would Chris say?" and just look in my journal where I have lots of notes based on some of my favourite and helpful videos from the channel ;D
Wow, i guess I’m doing better than I thought at SMM with over 1,400 followers on Instagram & 83,000 followers on one of my Pinterest accounts. I have a difficult time seeing the value of my knowledge, I undervalue my knowledge just because I learned most of it on my own (reading books, reading blogs, by experience of trial & error). I love all your videos, I’ve learned so much about how to word leading statements when closing deals and when presenting my work to clients. I would love to see videos on contracts and what to say in it.
It amazes me, how everytime I feel like I'm facing a roadblock in my design career and journey, I find something in The Futur channel that can help me overcome it. I had many of the same questions Melinda had and I have found some great advice and tips here. Thank you so much! For me, the issue is the whole focus thing. I' still in the beginning of my career and I haven't figured out what area in design I love the most and want to focus on, so for the moment, I'm doing branding, print, illustrations and also some motion design and digital painting projects. I'm not sure if having an Instagram account that has this much variation is a good idea ?! ..
I only found out about you days ago, and MAN you share so much value - I have been in this creative block / burn out phase for some time already and just watching your stuff gave me so much pump to go and make something without the pressure of it being good enough which I just firgured out was the root of the block. So refreshing! Keep making these, we are so grateful
Valuable stuff... I'm an introvert and struggle with sharing my process, struggles etc. but watching these videos and seeing Melinda blossom is therapeutic
Thank you Chris. This talk is so useful and inspiring. I wish I'd had this kind of advice years ago, I can totally identify with Melinda and her fears!
It's interesting how I was aware of a lot of these 'techniques' but receiving permission from Chris to post a variant of the same thing again and again makes it more acceptable to me.
This is without a doubt the best channel on youtube.. applicable and detailed information, for entrepreneurs and designers who want to be empowered in their fields and successful in their businesses. The future is leading a revolution for millennial and future generational growth in creative fields and business in general. I study what each of these brilliant designers say, and I write down, study and apply everything I can. Chris Do, you may not know me, and most of those who've been impacted by your business and the platform you've developed, but I want to say that one day I hope you get to really see how much you've changed my life, thank you
you're the best Chris Do ♥ i'm learning WaY MORE than what you say in your videos from you... I'm learning an attitude and way of thinking... you are a successful person and one of the best examples of "there's room for everyone in Succeed and everyone can be successful TOGETHER" . Thank you so much.
We truly do not own anything. Use as much as you can. Improve on some of them if you can and leave for others to take over. Our time here is stipulated already. Drop self preservation and embrace exploration and creativity. Now, this advice is first for me. Bless up and thank you Sir for these simple truths.
life is a learing curve.. so be willing to be judged. becuase if you never get judged you never really known if others think you are getting better. so that judgeden at hear what ppl teal.. but let it goes like a wind only focus on the stuff there thougt you becouse is often those thing there will make your self a better person. sry for misspellings ( have dyslexic ) and this on off my biggeste fejler. but to do better, starte with Trying.. think off that :D good program btw
The Futur Yeah, but expressing the struggle of finding proper word brought additional emotion to the comment ;) I just really appreciate it!! Thank you guys! :)
"Im in this space to learn, I just want to learn." ----- . Melinda is in a very lucky but well deserved position under your wing. Thanks for this share Maestro Do. Love the ref to Invisibilia by the way. That podcast is solid. Melinda, I'm following you. Hopefully we get to see more studies soon.
Chris Did It! Again! One of the reasons I like the show so much it that it's not pretentious. It's real and resonates. That's the reason I went from randomly bumping into to a video to watching more and subscribing, even commenting. Big up to Melinda.
Neon Nation I agree. Without realizing it, I put successful creative professionals on a pedestal. One so high, I couldn't reach with my own work. Chris Do and company have an approachability that empowers me to take my own chances.
Neon Nation Cuando te quisiste hacer el vivo con el nombre que te pusiste te cortaron el rostro diciendote que dejes de parlotear y que hagas la pregunta XD
Firstly, I love this. Thank you. Secondly, what would your advice be on returning to social media after a long absence? By that I mean a medical absence (huge exacerbation of a chronic illness/in hospital then bed for just over a year). On the one hand I want to just jump in as if nothing has happened, on the other I feel obliged to explain as it was quite sudden and care lots. I think that’s the block, I really do care it breaks my heart I had to stop and so passionate about my work but so thwarted for some of the same reasons articulated in this video, but other reasons too, including do my followers really need detail on this? It’s difficult to talk about anything medical without it sounding like it’s for pity when really it’s an explanation , And obviously it is part of my story as you said, but a little perplexed as to how to articulate this or indeed even to say nothing at all. Thank you for any advice in advance!
Your followers are enrolled in your story. Find a way to tell it that is true to your experience but contribute to their growth. What did you learn about yourself?
Wow I love this. I hate posting on social media. I don’t feel confident enough or pretty enough to post a selfie. And now I want to launch my own business and thinking about to post on social media makes me feel overwhelmed. Today in age and specialty rn with the pandemic if we don’t have social media we don’t exist. And it’s something I have been preparing for a few months. I get so anxious and overwhelmed on Instagram. I know a lot of people photoshop but I still feel uncomfortable with myself.
I found this video very helpful. Those fears of criticisms are "real" in that they're constantly circling in my head so much so that the topical item I wanted to discuss is no longer relevant. :/ Thanks for doing this Q&A and thanks for the tips on overcoming SM fears. (P.s. I haven't read the comments, so I'm not sure if anyone has addressed it but the topic of conveying emotion creates a lot of anxiety in me. I'm not your classic emotional person comfortable with sharing exclamation points, comfortable sharing opinions with vulnerability, comfortable conveying heightened interest and exuberance. I often find these people get traffic because others identify with that high-energy person... I am high-energy in person, but in writing/videos/content creation the tonality is lacking... :/ I talk about women and diversity in STEM, animal ethics/welfare, conservation biology, and education and public engagement (EPE) topics. These "sell" with an audience when you share the content with exuberance!!
damn guys, it is so inspiring and motivating with good advices. I would like you to look at my Instagram and website to give your opinion!!!!!! I would appreciate it SO much
I agree it’s became ridiculous this whole social media no matter how much you’re learning you’re always falling behind constantly with this new apps coming out how does one do this.
"If you make it about yourself and do a ton of selfies, that's really about you and frankly, you're just not that hot... [zoom in to Melinda] not you, i'm just saying YOU guys "
Amazing video. Here are some of the points I got writing down (and some from the description): Post once a week, but high quality. (Better than more posts a day) What to share next ? What I'm learning ? You can repeat the same things but with variety. Different strategies for different social medias. Dont just repost on instagram same things then on twitter, facebook etc. Twitter: Use it differently. Example: Use text on an image. What people are gonna say about my stuff - Judgement ? (Work on social media) Don't care about other people's opinion. When you make something, be passionate about it, but once you put it out in the world, detach from it as if it were someone else' What is a critiqe and fact ? Telling things that is incorrent and how you can improve it. People like to throw around opinions. Reframe the Objection: Filter out the opinions and pay attention to the constructive critique "You ripped off this X designer" - Because you don't know where something comes from does not make your work original. Mindset: I just want to learn. I don't really care if I ripped off, I tried making the same. Nothing we do is original - everything you've done, is a reflection of what you have experienced. Otherwise we would be reinventing what we already invented. Your design skills and training to help attract viewers Tell your story to let people connect and identify with you. Find somebody you like and deconstruct their process. Copyright - You're not selling on social media. Stop focusing on the no's because the no's will get you nowhere. Focus on being intentional and sharing. When putting something out there - Make it valuable. Help somebody. Share the process and journey.
Appreciate the energy the entire team puts into sharing these lessons with the community. Coming from 12 years as a solo-prenuer transitioning into a staff role I see how much value these lessons add for every role. Great work as always, Chris! Thank you for being a courageous voice that people related to, Melinda! Rock on to all the crew behind the scenes making those two look like the rockstars they are! *P.S. Thanks for keeping a certain beverage logo out of camera. We can look over the subtle Apple plug.
Melinda is amazing as always. I rant over it over and over but I love how she just goes "oh, this one thing sucks, now I know why it sucks and I know where to go to fix it". Love watching this.
@@melindalivsey1 A fun and productive thing might be to make a quick paragraph comment on this video to 2022 update what effective lessons you've implemented retrospectively, and add a link, and if you make that update succinct then ask Futur to pin it (they will respect you for asking). That's a great way to use social media :) Probably a bunch of people are wondering what worked for you. (I am 😄)
I had to pause the video so i could comment you almost put me in tear once’s you stated about “we are all arguing about old ideas that’s been borrowed” man your videos bring so much value, I’ve only watched a few videos so far but you offer more real world knowledge than my entire business BA 🙏🏽keep up the great work can’t wait to watch more and grow with your advice/ knowledge
Hi kaitachi. You can look at different accounts and try and find some examples. Instagram and Behance are great places to start to find people sharing their design process.
At 19:15, when talking about the use of text in photos as a workaround to the 144 character limit, I'm noticing some communication hindrances between Chris' "here is the principle, extrapolate and apply" approach and Melinda's "show me the process so I can replicate" approach. Jung would note this as a difference between "Intuitive" and "Sensing" personality types. Chris, have you heard of Hayakawa's "Ladder of Abstraction" from his book "Language in Thought and Action?"
Great video! I also have trouble posting on social media , either not be consistent, not having ideas , or not knowing how to make my posts shareable. This video really helped me learn ways I can post on social media more effectively.
Thanks Chris & Melinda! I really appreciate this video. This episode came right on time. I just got laid off from a terrific visual designer job, and I'm trying to get over my insecurities about sharing the process. Lately, It's been more a process grappling mental/emotional insecurities. (Paralysis in Analysis) I'm currently prepping my new portfolio, and I've been stumped/unsure about how potential clients/employers will judge my posts. Your message in this video really helped me reach a new "Ah-ha" moment. I'm deciding to let go of judgment and going to change my approach completely. I'm going to stop fearing and begin sharing more on social media (Linked In, Behance, etc.) Thanks again for the positive and motivational messages!
Thanks Chris. This session really enlightened me. I was able to see that I had things that I had been suppressing inside my head that had stopped me from showing my work. This is indeed LIBERATING.
Hey Chris and Melinda! Great video, thanks for many useful advices about social media! Though, I remain with a question: why do you need followers for your studio account on sm? Correct me if I am wrong, but design business is B2B, so what's the benefit from having a huge amount of followers, that are not necessarily business owners? Thank you in advance!
Hey Chris what do you think about creative people who do mix both personal & work together on their social media? Lately I've been experimenting with this idea and curating my feed & posts. My Instagram is @revoid.tv & I love making colorful graphics & styleframes. One Designer I really look up to in terms of a well curated feed is @jessicawalsh And I love that she shares her work, inspirations & sometimes photos of herself. Which also makes it seem more authentic as a designer following her social media.
yeah. you can mix it in. i think she's a role model for many designers. she's super talented, young, attractive and works on amazing projects. her life is aspirational to many. if you can pull it off, more power to you. but don't fall in love with yourself when others are telling you (via engagement) that they don't care to see it.
Golden @24:30 This frame of reference has been missing from the conversation since forever and the level of discussion on the topic is lacking 99% of everywhere (at least that I have found), But not here. This is wisdom and power. Kudos Chris Do.
I totally enjoyed this video. Thank you for the awesome advice. I actually use my social media to show parts of my life but also my love of books. Pretty much all books. But I been looking to also bring in my love of design as well.
Thank you so much for sharing your kmowledge, from Argentina. I started listeining to you Chris, and Im not a designer just someone who loves to learn, and trying to Start my own lingerie brand in a didficult country situation. Dont know if Im wrong but Í believe that image is everything, since media is free publicity, or really cheap, Í wish to start my brand sharing my work on social media, and I can understand the way you explain this. So thankfull for this.
Hey Chris I really like the example your giving for Twitter at 20:21 but how do you make it not a click bait post? :) Thanks for this amazing video by the way.
do you that? do you walk around everyday crediting every idea? after all, you are the sum of all your experiences, what you read, what you watched, teachers you've had.
Hey Chris, thanks for all the good content. You mention not justifying price, but I want to hear more. Which of your videos do you talk about this most in depth?
Nice video - I'm enjoying Melinda's stories, she's great addition to the channel. I also like these snackable videos that include some actionable takeaways.
great video, thanks! I think the idea of opinion and fact is really interesting and how to approach them though I think you did go a bit black and white because to me opinion can be extremely valuable if the opinion is well argued and specific. After all we/some of us do make art and art is opinion based.
I find that the more opinions I take into consideration, the muddier the original idea can become. It's a matter of being able to filter out the helpful from the unhelpful. And in most cases, facts are more helpful than opinions.
Ahhhh so refreshing to hear other people talk about the importance (or lack of) originality. Totally agree that it takes way to much focus instead of making the biggest impact. Is there a video about how to post on Linkedin (not tech wise)
