We teach the Arri Alexa at NYU and the one thing we always say to the students who are new to it is- "its the cinema camera for your grandparents." It was designed with the idea that the person using it comes from a deep FILM background and they want the simplicity of using a film camera. So yeah, the reputation of the camera is really what psychs most first time users out. Also, this might be a generational thing- the first thing the students do is touch the screen to change the menu only to realize its a button system.

The full size Alexa body was also designed to be operated when so many companies today just work to be the smallest which doesn’t necessarily make operating easier

Good stuff. I still remember my 1st day operating the Alexa 35 and your friend was correct. It’s like any camera. Once u learn where things are it’s pretty much go time. For me I had 4 hours to learn how it worked. Great info fam

You've touched on it but I think it's worth reiterating the grip support and battery draw required for this camera. It is heavy, everything that supports it is also heavy and expensive including the crew costs. For power draw I've mostly worked with Alexa's that ran block batteries with a v-mount as back up for handheld, as with a teradek and timecode box and monitor it draws so much power.

nice video man, very interesting and great seeing you so open about this being new to using an Arri. I of course haven't used an Arri so I kinda have that same feeling .. not secure about handling it simply because it's unknown territory. So this video is great, taking us with you in the preps of shooting with an 'unfamiliar' camera 🤜🤜

from my minimal experience with Arri cameras, I think they are easier to use than Blackmagic cameras

I shot with multiple cameras over the years too, such as Arri, Red, and every other brands on the market and I can tell you that Arri produce a much much better image quality than every other brands I used. And like he said, it's so easy to operate! And fun fact, you can now in 2024, find a second hand ARRI AMIRA for the same price as a FX9, and an ARRI ALEXA MINI for less than a Red Raptor 😉

@@nvidiashield82any camera seems impressive on paper. And I’m eager to get my hands on that 65mm Blackmagic 17k cam too. But let’s see how it performs under stress tests. I own an Alexa Mini and Amira, a RED Monstro 8K and Ranger Gemini 5K, and Sony FX6 and FX3. And I can tell you that claimed dynamic range vs. usable dynamic range makes a huge difference. And ARRI does backflips over the competition under severe conditions. Another thing we don’t know about Blackmagic’s 17k camera is the pixel pitch of that sensor. Arri’s are 8.25 microns, which is insane, which makes a huge difference too. Quality over quantity.

I was definitely intimidated as well at first. bought an Alexa mini in February (feels crazy to say) and it's definitely taken some practice. But overall was way less scary to use than I'd imagined

I am a huuuuge XT and Sxt fan. Actually have 2 XT Plus’ for sale in NYC. With the shoulder pad they actually aren’t bad on the shoulder because they balance so well

If you can manage the Blackmagic menu you will breeze through shooting with Arri as a Cam Op or a DP. The real issue with Arri is you need a full crew, your life depends on your ACs and DIT.

And the massive ARRI battery running for 4 hours compared to the little BP-U on the Pyxis that also runs for 3-4 hours, people still complain about the Pyxis battery decision.
