Caveat to dynamic range in the KX not changing with iso, the caveat is as long as you’re properly exposed Figured I’d ad before getting chewed out 😂

Commenting on the FX30 in terms of Cine EI and sticking to Base ISO's to not lose dynamic range, I highly suggest looking at Phillip R Peck here on RU-vid as he actually went out and tested that theory out andddddddd.....you dont lose anything. He shot a bunch of images on an FX30 at the base ISO of 800 at an EI of 200, then shot the same images in Flexible ISO at 200 ISO and.....exactly the same shot. The shadows were identical, the highlights were identical, the image as a whole was completely identical between each shot. He also raised this as awareness to the large amount of people complaining the FX30s 120fps is way too noisy. His explanation of this was perfect and spot on. Since the FX30 is a 6k sensor that down res's to 4k, that 4k 120 crop is a 1:1 of 3840x2160 of that sensor. Its not that theres MORE noise, its just that the noise is seen much more because were cropped in and the solution to remove the noise? Turn down the ISO. Because it literally makes no difference in Dynamic range...at all. Why Sony claims this? I have no idea and neither does he but you can pretty much shoot on the FX30 at a 100 ISO in flexible ISO in SLOG-3, expose properly (that 1.7+/2+ stops over) and you literally get the same - exact - image if you were at its "Base" iso. I've tested this myself at least 25 times in so many different conditions. Scenes of high contrast, scenes of lower contrast, scenes with alot of clipping high lights, scenes with extremely dark shadows in them....and I get the same result every time. Shooting in Cine EI is in essence, kinda pointless. And Sony even claiming you get *more* or *better* dynamic range if you only shoot in their "base" ISOs is - baseless. It's simply not true. Love my traffic lights on my OG Komodo. Makes the cam soooo easy to expose properly. I only shoot m or hq so it takes all the guess work out. I just make sure to set my shots up to be a close to complete in cam practically to not worry about trying to get the info back. I find it a breath of fresh air to not deal with a gazillion compression options. Great time we live in with these tools.

lol we post the same topic on the same day love it haha. Always great seeing everyone’s approach. Another cool thing about ISO is the middle gray point shifts with the ISO. Super useful for low or high contrast scenes

Hello men, nice videos that yoyu create, thanks for your time and nice edits. I have a ZV E1 cause i was waiting the fx6 II or something like that but noow i have the KX on my mind, cause i dont like (IDKWhy) the processing image of thats sensor.. looks very digital with normal lenses and i dont know if i should purchase cine lenses for the sony or with the komodo you find something special.... i already see that yoou are using the RF 15-35, so do you think that you are achieving that look even with rf lenses on the KX? Think I need to watch your cine video. I have fx3 and I have tried to use it once or twice and went back to flexible iso I do what to atleast understand it before I completely right it off.

Why not just avoid cine EI altogether and just shoot in 800 or 12800 on the FX3?

I actually do that (on the FX30 - so 800 or 2500 for me...) - I find that simpler - I use my ND/F stop /lighting to work around one of those 2 bases

You are in actuality only ever using 800 or 12800... but by changing the EI it will 'darken' the image, which makes it appears to be under-exposed. So, you'll naturally adjust your camera settings to let in more light to fix your exposure. So, why would you do this? If you want more clarity and 'light' in the darker or shadows in your shot, and you'll know you'll always be getting the best dynamic range as you're always on one of two base ISOs. So... imagine I have a 'darker' more moody scene. lots of shadows and darker areas in my shot. But I still wanna ensure my footage is clean. To ensure it's as clean as possible, I need to be at a base ISO, 800 or 12800 in this case. So, hypothetically, I'll set my cameras ISO to 800, then adjust my EI to get the 'look' I want, knowing even in a dark scene, it's gonna be super clean, as I'm at a base ISO giving me a great image. So I'll set my EI to 200, it looks dark on my monitor, but I know I'm good as when I put the footage in post, it'll be a little 'brighter' as it was at 800 not 200. Then all I need to do is drop my exposure in the edit until I have the same look as I did when filming. Nice clean footage, even when in 'darker' scenes.

Thanks for making this. Yes this is same concept as the Cine EI method. I think Red themselves explains using ISO as an exposure tool best in this video ru-vid.comQfLkWyhGh7A?si=tOyD0EcBEo1ryqWb&t=1276 (this is good starting point from where to watch). The main takeaway for me is that changing ISO shooting R3D won’t give you highlight or shadow protection in of itself, it’s got to be done in tandem with an exposure change (such as aperture, ND, or shutter). They say this explicitly at 34:40.

Hm How to roast Kofi....Let's see. Got it...your white shirt is wrinkled. Totally ruined the entire video for me! That said, great video as I also came from Sony. There cannot be enough said about just leaving your ISO at 800 for Red cameras on set and managing everything else. At least as far as I know right now still being new to the Red ecosystem.
