As an African American I grew up eating the cheapest foods in the stores and was always okay with that. Over the past year I've found out that i'm sensitive gluten, dairy and corn I also found out im allergic to soy/soybean oil, peanuts and cottonseed oil. I've learned a lot about food over the past year and now cook all my own meals. I try to educate other blacks about the importance of reading labels and not eating certain foods but all my information falls on death ears. I stopped eating 90% of the processed foods I use to eat. Most people have no idea what processed foods are (I know I didn't) and claim they rarely eat processed foods, yet they eat a ton of processedfoods. Cheap processed foods are expensive in the long run its better and cheaper just to eat the expensive whole foods. I'm know longer on thyroid meds and my ibs has clear up a ton and no more joint pains all the time. My skin looks healthy with no more dark spots!
Wow! You know, I live in NC and I can say that the original “Black” way of eating in this state was a healthful, homemade diet. It’s the cheap processed foods that’s killing us, Blacks and Whites alike! But with the economic differences, our Blacks are suffering the poor health effects more. Keep spreading the word and being a great example to others.
@jerricaher Totally agree with you.. Making better choices ,reading labels and understanding how eating the processed foods cause sickness and even death. I also have eliminated most processed food from my diet and try to share with family the benefits but they're not interested.. My husband is coming around, I made him some avocado toast on organic whole grain & seeds bread , he liked it😊 One step at a time..I won't stop sharing the benefits with others. Congrats on your journey of healing and wholeness...
Don't say "sugar, salt, fat". Saying that way is an insult to salt and fat. The only two things that should be blamed are carbohydrate and vegetable oil.
Overweight parents.... this is what your kids will go through. Along with being bullied and having self esteem issues cos their clothes dont fit the way they want to when they look in the mirror. Its not just about just looking ugly. Thats only part of it. I lost 126 pounds in 15 months beginning in 2020. And have kept it off. Eating plant exclusive like this family. I was overweight all through my childhood and went through all the issues I mentioned above. I went from a UK size 22 to a UK size 6-8. I have no cravings for any foods I don't already eat, and got rid of lifelong suicidal depression by changing my diet to this way of eating. I also walk around 10 miles every day, walking to work and back and doing other walking.
That is awesome. There is a mental health crisis in USA children and a big reason is likely the food that is getting worse and worse by generation. My personal feeling is the advertising is powerful. I am successful on whole food-plant based now and for 7 years. I believe part of the success is avoiding standard media with an onslaught of commercials about food. After the transition over a few months, which wasn't too hard, the temptations almost completely went away. I wish the everyone could experience what I have losing 50 lb but doing it for lowering cholesterol, which worked. I won't ever need statins and no longer blood pressure meds as long as I stay on this diet.
I agree about eating healthy & all that ,but i felt all through the film that Liam just needed love & healing from losing his mum ..& i felt everyone was a bit harsh on him..
My 5 cents. Liam will need some deep and lengthy psychology work from loosing his mum. The weight gain is an external manifestation of his deep pain. Until he heals from that pain the symptoms will remain. I feel for you Liam, you’ll get there bud 🙏
@@luchiayoung and neither do you heal by not talking about the person you miss and loved dearly. We talk about my children's dad all the time. He was and remains a part of their heritage. I'm really proud of this young man. He is an inspiration and he is blessed to have so many people in his life that love him and want to help him. Go Liam!

Liam, you’re such an inspiration. I’m a 40 year old woman and you have completely inspired me! Thank you 🙏 You’re an amazingly strong and mature young man. All the best to you , and to your dad for raising you so well.
I have to eat once a day and people think that I am crazy. Now, I am thinner than people told me that I am supposed to eat five times a day but I don't believe that old fashion diet.
@@pakapoa7348 I would imagine that your metabolism was very low on just one meal a day and therefore it didn't take many more calories from your odd snack until there was weight gain. It seems that intermittent fasting combined with whole foods may be the way to sort out a slow metabolism - but it's not for everyone.
@@user-mi7zx2ki5o I wonder if you are male? As I hear OMD is more problematic for women generally due to their hormones especially as they age. Also, are you still eating OMD and how long have you been doing it for if you don't mind me asking.
Poor Liam, a little introvert with a single parent. I can’t believe his dad couldn’t have just changed things at home, kept Liam in his school and wisely and silently changed the whole nutrition and health scene for Liam and his siblings 😢
His family are very supportive and I'm proud of Liam. I think Liam might be using food to deal with the loss of his mom. Wish Liam all the best on his weight loss journey and receives the help and support he needs to deal with his grief.
I loved what his das said. That HE has to change the shopping. I have seen SO many teenagers who dieted on some show where the parents were obese themselves and only saw the fault in their child.
It's a first world problem, and a lot has to do with how disconnected from our food sources we are and lack of education on nutrition and wellness. Many adults are oblivious as to TDEE, macros, and even how many calories are in 1 lb of fat gain. Myself included until recently, there's so much misinfo out there too that it worked what healthy weight loss or nutrition even is, ppl go to extremes on either end and have no clue how to be in the middle. Just learning these things has helped empower me to make better choices and make changes, and I've already lost over 15 lbs in just under 4 wks. I agree there's a lot of bs preservatives and there's societal and mental health issues that can make the situation much worse, don't get me wrong. But a lot comes down to a lack of knowledge understanding and therefore a lack of empowerment in making better choices IMHO.
he's 11. it's ok if he has an afternoon eating crap with his friends. most of his days with you he eats well and is active. he'll be fine if his trauma from losing his mom is addressed and you continue to give him a healthy and supportive home. let him have the treats with friend day here and there and don't stress. i can't imagine being that age and having a sit down about all the junk i ate
"Diet" and "deity" do not have a common origin. Cowboy Skunkbeard just made that up. "Diet" means "way of life", and "deity" comes from the root "to shine", as in something shining in the sky that is perceived to be a god.
@@vellvirginia2218 Yeah, which is another reason why I don't trust google searches until I do research to verify whether there's any truth to the default results.
Liam did such an awesome job in his healthy transformation. To actually see the changes taking place as he ate better and exercised was phenomenal. As he lost weight and started to understand the importance of being healthy you could see his moral and self confidence increase. Excellent video!! Loved it when you showed the comparison of weight loss by making him carry the weight he lost. You could see the lightbulb go off. Liam is a lovely young man-great job.
Such an impressive transformations, and bravo to all of you who were involved to Liam´s health, and so proud of him as this wasn´t that easy but he earned it. Wolud love to see Liam´s life as a continuation of the documentary. Just fabulous job !!
I lived in Australia, had a very low budget but still managed to eat clean , its all about where you get your food and learning what to eat instead of the processed stuff. His son wouldn't need 3 packs of noodles if they had ANY nutritional value. Same goes for sandwiches
The biggest thing for me from getting off sugar was how much energy I have now. Depending on sugar for energy is a recipe for disaster. Now that I am off sugar I do not crave sugar at all. People eat doughnuts, cake and Ice cream in front of me and I do not miss it at all. I look at doughnuts like an beautiful art project. Beautiful but not for consumption. Love sugar freedom! I was eating 400 to 500g of sugar a day. I was in the 410lb range and was on the fast track to an early grave. Giving up sugar has saved my life. Love eating more now without any shame or regret. Down to 320s and could not be happier. Sun Foods is 100% better than anything made in a lab. If he went on a 30 day sugar detox he would benefit greatly. Need to break addiction... After one week of sugar detox healthy food taste so good. Fruit is amazing Vegetables are exceptional. Kids are driven by taste and once they transform their tastebuds that is where the will see the real change. When you can enjoy fruit like a doughnut that is when you can sustain the long term success. Breaking the cycle is key.
27:27 Frozen vegetables can be healthier than the fresh option because they're snap frozen at the time of picking. "Fresh" vegetables, especially if not in season, may have been stored for some time in cold storage, reducing their nutritional value.
Frozen vegetables are so much easier to manage and ultimately cheaper. I’ve waisted so much fresh produce “planning” a specific recipe and not getting to it. It’s so easy to keep frozen chopped onions and peppers, and vegetables that are always ready when I am.
I was 425lbs aka 30 Stone im now down to 236.2 lbs 16.8 Stone and counting really glad I stopped eating all the fast food! still have burgers but most of the time they're now turkey burgers! still eat out just better choices. Still amazes me that once I get to 225lbs I will have lost 200lbs! i'm 6' 4" so that will be an entire me lol. The change in Liam in the 3 months was insane and so good really happy for him and his family and he even looked happier once we saw results.
Wow, love how aunt Kate sat Liam down on the sofa and guilted him for eating snacks at school. It would be most helpful if the "adults" in the room didn't treat him like a leper or talk about him to each other like he isn't sitting right there in front of them. These adults might say they mean well, but they're total arseholes. Oh, and she's just SO frustrated that he ate chocolate at school and undid all of her "hard work." Then she sits there and guilts him about how much exercise he needs to do to burn it off. Seriously? She just welcomed him into the land of eating disorders. WELL DONE.
Anything is better than what got him there but steak and eggs with resistance training is a superior solution both hormonally and psychologicaly than plant slop and running up mountains. The problem is not just that so many are overweight but they are under muscled.
Depends on the people. When I was obese I wouldn't have set foot in a gym for anything at all. But in the privacy of my home, I love doing hula and bellydancing, because no one can see me, so I can just immerse myself in the music.
They have the kid living with aunt and uncle but its the parents who need the overhaul. They need to learn how to shop and keep the right environment for his kids!
I think the problem with salt is that it's added to bland carbohydrates like potato & grains to make them palatable, & these, along with the seed oils in which they're cooked, are what are doing the damage.
Suprisingly, I usually watch movies / documents while I'm doing workouts. I'm emotional eater, have some emotional problems. I'm doing workouts 6 time a week at least 50 minutes each, eating healthy food and then that day come when world falling into my heas. I'm doing longer workout but it almost always ends with trip to shop food (at home only healthy food is allowed). I cannot deal with negative emotioms.
Hi, First of all, all the best for your journey! You are doing way better than most other ppl out there. I also live a healthy lifestyle, and exercise is superimportant to me. But I have also learned to relax a bit in many aspects of my life; for example, I don't cut out "bad food" entirely. Don't worry. You will achieve your goals!
People have made fruit hybrids that that are bigger and sweeter ( more sugar content) than ever before. Fructose is treated like alcohol in the liver. People are walking around with fatty liver, metabolic syndrome and think they are eating healthy. It is better that processed food but be careful with fruit. Keto/Carnivore diets are very good for health.
Agreed, they are terrible for health and the most highly profitable of all. They are designed to elicit a binge response so the consumer buys even more, increasing profit. It's very scientific and horrible at the same time.
Exactly, I have hypothyroidism and I have to carefully select what I eat, otherwise I would be overweight-I’m not. Recently I treated myself to Chinese food (I do this once a year), and immediately gained 8-pounds. While yes it’s water weight, but my point is if I continued to eat bad foods I will gain more weight and become obese. It’s a week later I’ve lost five of those pounds and have three to go. I eat super clean and realize eating the bad foods is only a rare treat. I choose not to be fat and eat accordingly.
@@MH-en9qc Good to see you were able to find the solution. Have you looked into the carnivore/proper human diet? It sounds crazy but for 18 months I've been eating a diet that's 95% meat, eggs, butter and dairy. I'm 56 and haven't been this healthy since my 20s. It's mind boggling how great I feel. Crazy but it works.
Agree with a great deal in the video but when i heard juicing that took me back a bit. Juicing was quite popular growing up but weve since learned juicing destroys the fiber which is vital to feeding your gut and specificallyif its fruit just overloads you with sugar without the natural fiber to temper absorbtion. Eating whole foods as whole food will get all the benefits you want based on all the studies ive seen.
I think this is all great. But, no matter how much this family helps. Nathan will be going home in 3 months to a single dad of three young children. Working full time and overwhelmed. The home that he is in, though loving, is not his reality. A stay at home mom, who spends time cooking wholesome meals, so on the weekend, the family can have amazing outings. That little boy is so lovely. I hope for the best for him.
I think he'll be ok: a television is an excellent baby sitter. I joke! jk jk I heard he is doing well at least physically since the film was made and that's been many years.
Parents need to stop being lazy and take a football to the park with the kids for a runaround in the evenings and weekends. Everyone would sleep better too
So, you exercise football 2 hours on Saturdays and 2 hours on Sundays, that is what? Losing 1500 kcal? 2000kcal? What difference would that make if you feed junk to your children reading out to 3000-4000 kcal per day?
This is such a fear-mongering film and that juice guy has all the wrong answers. This is how people develop restrictive eating disorders. I'm not even an hour in and the misinformation and false rhetoric is alarming.
Awesome video this why it's a mental problem and a physical one together. People chose this lifestyle, to eat fast food, order doordash, multiple times a week, not workout, or learn to try to eat a balance meal,
The animated movie “Wall-e” is a great movie to watch but unfortunately, it depicts what might happen to a world destroyed by humans and plagued with obesity. Obese people (almost 99% of the population, I think) use their “wheelchairs” to move around and don’t or can’t walk anymore. So sad that it’s a reality for the whole world now.
I'm disgusted with people that do that to kids. He doesn't need to kill himself to lose that weight. Eating properly, he could lose it sitting on his six.
💗 Very inspiring. Handsome boy starved for a mother's love. I do hope his father and siblings take up the lifestyle so Liam can succeed long term. If I were to throw any shade on this positive documentary I believe children should have the chance to grow up as omnivores... to steer a child into any exclusive diet is wrong. Let them make that choice as an adult.
Thanks for this documentary, knowledge is the first step and supporting tools, such as showing people how to prepare healthy meal is another way to encourage people adopt healthy eating habits. Exploring different ethic foods provides us more healthy nutrition alternative and new food prep-techniques.
Liam weighs 80 kilo's, but I don't know how I can help him. Damn, you KNOW what to do very well! Stop buying all that crap and buy fruits and veggies. People constantly making excuses for themselves, so that they don't have to do anything and can continue their lazy lifes with crappy food. Holy sh*t, I am 186cm and weigh also 80 kilo and I am an adult.
Where is meat, fish, eggs, cheese, butter? I can't believe they put this kid on a vegan diet and strenuous exercise. At 1:09 he said it all, "I don't like it on the veggie island because all they eat is veggies."
Sugar has killed more people than cigarettes ever did yet it's ignored. This stuff should be removed from food, taxed by every country in the world. Come on Australian Government, get your arse into gear.
I think it’s the addictive spikes of sugar and carbs. As wonderful as exercise is, it still comes down to what you eat. Of course it’s easier to snack in front of a television as opposed to riding on a bike or shooting hoops!
Optimum nutrition for a human to THRIVE is ESSENTIAL fatty acids and ESSENTIAL amino acids which we can only get from eating animals. There are NO ESSENTIAL carbohydrates. Plants are for medicines, not for consumption. Look up Belinda Fettke's research on the history of vegetarianism.
Excellent combination of exercise plus quitting junk food. However, whole food can and should include meat. There is a lot of sham science and bogus allegations expressed by the "experts" in this video.
i feel we have just gotten lazy over the period of time and we need to detach ourselves from the mobile phone. and that my friend is the answer to all our questions
I appreciate what they're doing here, but I'm half an hour in and I just keep noticing a lot of oddball misconceptions. Like, the etymology guy knows NOTHING about etymology (What is a "wholefood expert"???). The "foods from the sun" thing is nice, but the energy that comes from the sun isn't thrown out of processed pasta, it's concentrated so your body gets MORE of it, not less. White sugar is essentially a super concentrated form of solar energy. The dad's guilt because he uses canned or frozen vegetables; I mean, these can actually be HEALTHIER than fresh, depending on salt content and how long the "fresh" veggies have been sat in the shop. What functional difference is there between walking around all day indoors and walking around outdoors? So, if I use a treadmill, my body will somehow burn calories differently than if I go outside and breathe fresh air? Also, who told this guy wild animals are constantly in motion? Energy economy is a big deal when you don't have food stores. Most creatures actually try to conserve energy. Play, in wild animals, is often about more than movement; it's often about learning how to hunt or socialization. As great as it might be to help a kid lose weight, these kinds of comments make me wonder about the quality of the information he's being given.
Just curious: how much weight did the members in his family loose during his time away? Knowing about his progress and being adults and ... You know? Not reminding him that he comes back changed and they didn't...
The daughter was heading the same way. Getting podgy. And just cos dad didn't look overweight particularly, the worst fat is the visceral fat and if he ate the same food as they did he must've had plenty of that, it didn't just disappear. Guessing mom was the one visibly overweight. Actually dad looked heavier at the end than he did at the start.
@@Goodbyeeveryonehere there was a picture of mom. She did not appear overweight. Not the ONLY issue but seems like shit went downhill after the mom died. Depression is not fun
Great movie and process. Amazing story. But the whole vegetarian/vegan pushing by that family is very misguided and incorrect. Still better than the SAD diet at least.
It's good that you've spoken out against vegetarianism/veganism, but it can only be said to be better than the SAD for a very short-term period, as it's highly nutrient-deficient, which will be catastrophic to health when the person's nutrient stores become depleted. At least the SAD contains the nutrients that are lacking in a vegan diet.
In Australia, Wonderwhite Bread is not "a dollar a loaf". It's currenly $4.40 a loaf at Coles. You can get Coles or Woolworths bakery *wholemeal* bread for significantly less per loaf - $2.70 at Coles.
I would say about 98% of grocery store breads are complete junk food imho. I bake my own whole wheat bread frequently and eat a large quantity of it. Whole meal breads are the way to go.
I never comment on youtube stuff but felt compelled to say something about what is clearly some form of abuse .For heavens sake these self appointed helpers are precisely what this child doesn't need . He's sitting in the car with his father who is clearly overweight himself being told he ( Liam) has some kind of weight problem....his stomach is hanging over his jeans ...get on the scales Dad it's not that pretty. I've had two boys myself the eldest looked just like Liam until the testosterone kicked in at puberty,I'm not saying feed the kid crap, but he will slim down hormonally or when the biological urges take hold. Who's doing the shopping ,who's feeding the kids, take some responsibility for the child yourself you made him you help him not send him off to some boot camp to develop an eating disorder later in life' Diet and exercise don't work the evidence is clear and as for the guy in the texan hat and shirt being some health expert...what more can I say wasn't he in the Village People. This whole debacle is just some self promoting load of rubbish designed to exploit the diet health , fitness and sickness industry using a child to make money for the promoters shame on you.
Shaming him for eating what all the other kids ate at school…then running him over and over and getting mad when he complains…that’s not normal for a kid. He has to choose.
I’m forcing myself to watch this. i’m feeling so bad for this kid. What they are doing is NOT sustainable. Poor kid needs a proper human diet which has a lot of animal protein and fat. we have to be as close to abusive as possible on this whole video on several levels. 💔
Diet translate to regular eating pattern. Puberty in itself won't automatically fix anything, in fact it could get worse if the kid have too much of adipose tissue since that in itself is a hormoneregulating organ. The science is pretty clear about that healthy food choices (I would prefer he had whole food instead of processing it to juice and smoothies) and physical activity works. Not everyone needs to be a bodybuilder but bodybuilders have least frequency of cancer and there is 13 more forms of cancer correlated to obesity correlated to obesity compared to smoking and we expect smokers to drop their bad habit.
I wish Liam all the best and a long healthy life. I also hope he adds meat to his diet, or he's not going to be as healthy as he could be long-term. And health equals happiness.
Liam is very lucky to have an aunt and uncle on call who work in the fields they are in. Liam basically had a full-time personal trainer and a personal nutritionist/dietitian for free. Hardly anyone has such a luxury, and many kids don't even have parents who would watch a documentary like this. Makes it all seem a bit too "holier than thou".
The child’s first day living with his uncle and uncle had him running uphill? WTF How about starting with a walking routine then start adding hill, sprints and distance training over a few weeks. Liam is a trooper to tolerate such a poor training model.
@@luvkayakn I'd expect Liam was allowed to walk if he found it too hard at first. It's a while since I watched the documentary, but I seem to remember Liam played soccer, so he wasn't actually coming to fitness training as a mere couch potato.
@@luvkayakn I would have skipped a strict exercise requirement for a year at least, and done just a strict whole food-plant based diet after a transition which should include finding dishes the child thinks are delicious, which could take significant time and effort. When adults switch, they have to do it if they want any chance of remaining on the diet. It is unclear if he really enjoyed the foods he was eating. I heard that today, he is a healthy weight. It's been a long time since this film was made so that is a phenomenal success if true.
I'm in my seventies and sit on my six all day, I don't gain weight. Why not? I'm not racing all over the world, trying to sweat my guts out. I know what I should eat. Back in the 1960s no one was fat and they were not all racing around the streets like nut cases trying to keep the fat off. They were all fitter then and almost everyone smoked. More people are dying of cancer now, then they did then.
sorry but there's a balance here, especially when dealing with children. at 1:00:05 the shaming was ridiculous! all his friends brought food, it was a social thing; he has not been eating any snacks/junk/at all for at least a month. he's a kid. even adults are allowed to enjoy themselves occasionally. like this poor kid is going to have psychological trauma after this about food! not a healthy relationship with food or fitness. she's literally punishing him.
