Personally, even though I have some basic plumbing and service engineer experience, I would definitely go for a replacement valve. They're pretty cheap, and a better opportunity to get the repair right first time, as a far easier option. Great video either way, Thanks!

Just done mine for £1.50 cost for a repair kit from Toolstation. Mine was almost 40 years old so pretty limescaled up; glad I had a pick set to extract the crudded up parts and a razor blade scraper to remove the perished remains of the sealing washer without damaging the sealing faces. Could have just bought a new ball valve for a few quid more but where''s the fun in that? Thanks mate, wouldn't have attempted it without your video.

Helpful vid. My overflow tank has just started dripping so I'm going to have to try and fix it under COVID lock down. I'll have to order a box of nozzles and washers off the internet... What is the proper name for the kit so I can order one? I see if any plumbing suppliers are open for collection only. I'll try just bending the arm as a temp fix.

My loo has the same type of valve as you have there a 'PEGLER FLOAT VALVE. ' They use the same on the header tank as on the side inlet on toilets then ? The only difference with my one is the ball float arm makes contact with the end where the needle valve sticks out and then pushes in. Are these a 15mm or other fitting? ( my one is brass). It looks as the inlet pipe fixes internally to the valve as its a side entry valve. Have to say that looks like too much hassle to take apart.

@stevecrane17
@stevecrane17 6 лет назад
if the float valve is not at fault, it could be the expansion pipe leaking water above the tank, or the hot water cylinder is pin holed, so water could be backing up into the tank. is it the cold water tank or the central heating one?

Great video just what the internet needs, I did this job yesterday except I used a brand new ball valve available at screwfix £5-7 quid depending on type, I thought it may be useful for viewers to know the alternate cost if they don't fancy refurbishing one as the plumbers refurb kit can be expensive for a one off job. I also tested the watertight sealing of the ball valve water inlet fitting to the tank after installation of the new ball valve by over filling the tank a little, I identified and cured a small leak down the side of the tank with a nip of the two large thin nuts before big problems occurred! Its very likely I disturbed water inlet fitting when struggling to loosen off the old corroded ball valve and caused the leak! Fortunately I took my time and checked things over and tested everything is good before climbing out of the loft. Do be thorough and it pays to take your time is my advice to DIYers!

. These valves are so under-engineered for their purpose. On my washer, a dimple had formed where it came into contact with the end of the conical piston. I removed the flat washer and sanded the washer flat, and flipped it around when reassembling. Once the arm was bent down, the tank stopped filling earlier, meaning less water in the tank. Job done. Sometimes a new ballcock valve assembly lasts 5 years, sometimes 5 minutes. The failure rate of these things is ridiculous.
@mikw1809
@mikw1809 3 года назад
And since claiming success, after 3 days, it's leaking again, even after installing new washers and a new nozzle, and cleaning out the internals of the brass body. Checked that the plastic float had no cracks also. There is a solution made by Karaflow www.keraflo.co.uk/aylesbury-k-type.html .. but they cost an arm and a leg. I noticed that since the water company has been fixing leaks in the local area, the mains pressure seems to have increased, even my mains inlet stopcock is leaking, for now I have reduced the pressure at the stop cock, it seems these damn parts are not designed to cope. I watched one YT video where a small valve regulator was added in the tank cold water feed, before the ballcock valve. That would make a lot of sense. That silly washer is not going to hold anything above 2 bar, that pressure will push against the piston washer and create a gap.

Why do we still use these tanks ? I always hate tanks in the attic and they're noisy bastards when filling. My outlaws in Germany have no such thing probably because the pressure off the mains is much higher, the pipes coming in from the road are huge compared to our little black pipe.

Where's your dust sheets at? And the orifice you used is not suitable for high pressure. So you'll have to refit a new one in 6-12 months.
