Also if you plan to release on consoles as well, maybe make the dragging of the ingredients optional (it would also be more accessible for handicapped people). I like the cooking book but I also liked the list of recipes. A nice addition could be to make a sortable list of the recipes as well so that you can jump to the page of certain recipes (imagine wanting to cook pumpkin pie and having to skip all the pages before that)
DON'T YOU DARE THINK I MISSED THAT LORE DROP DEVFROG So, at 10:10 we can see some of the Quest information for quests "Repair the Sailboat" and "Frog of the Flame" which the descriptions of tell us some noteworthy things. With "Repair the Sailboat" we can clearly read "After an UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT AT ESCAPING THE ISLAND, you come across the remains of an ancient sailboat along the shore." So right off the bat, we know our Main Character (MC) does not want to say and is making multiple attempts to leave. However this also gives us a second thing: an Ancient Sailboat. The other quest gives us a new character Pymon (which itself is a red flag, as this is a deviation of PAIMON, the Demon of Intelligence), whom we know can talk, as we must "fulfill his numerous requests" in exchange for a piece of the "Divine Sailboat" The Divine Sailboat and the Ancient Sailboat are likely the same thing, though... why is it divine? Although we don't know why yet, I have reason to believe in this theory: So for context, I made a video a while back which was a theory saying that the "Maiden" is a Witch, and that the Frogs come from a generation of Humans turned into frogs (I also suggest that our MC is a familiar, though the above language seems to suggest this is debunked). In the comments, DevFrog had mentioned that I had "actually got quite a few things right", which I THEORIZE is likely the fact the maiden is a witch. Which if so, *does* make some added sense as to why the fire frog is named after a demon known for being "the King of Hell". (Though it should be noted that Paimon (the demon) is considered to be the most friendly demon to interact with, so hopefully my soul doesn't look too much like a fly!) (Also side note, Pymon COULD be a demon tethered to the body of a frog BY the witch, but that's more of a headcannon than a theory, as there's absolutely no proof to this other than the name.) MORE SPECIFICALLY, I believe I know why the Witch left as soon as we arrived, and why we specifically need a DIVINE Sailboat to escape. That being, that one of the other things I had "gotten right" was that people are cursed/tethered to the island. The Witch was trapped there until we arrived, and now that they're gone, WE are trapped (unless we can successfully use the Divine Sailboat to escape once and for all but... something tells me it ain't going to be that easy! Nyahahhaa)
Left that in just for you >:)) Great theory btw!! Can't really say too much at the moment, but I do think you're onto something :0 I wonder who the maiden really is.... I also wonder if there are more of these divine frogs around the island... maybe the steam page will give you some more clues :p Looking forward to what you come up with next :))
On the one hand I'm impatient for the game. On the other hand this unbridled level of tangible joy you're clearly getting from making this is bringing me so much joy. I'm so excited for this project knowing how much love has gone into making it!
I'm a UI programmer for AAA games, and I can assure you you did a really great job on these menus! The functionality may be similar but they feel a lot more ✨diegetic ✨
A wonderful overhaul! Things now look so rounded-up and neat, fresh and colourful, love it! The redesigned cooking system is just great, it is genuinely interesting to see how far you've come with certain game mechanics and their design. Regarding that design, I thought of a few suggestions, if you don't mind? From what I see, you need to manually summon your inventory of ingredients each time you drop one of them in the cauldron. Perhaps it would be better for the inventory to pop back up automatically? This way you can simply cancel it if you need fewer ingredients (I'm assuming you can close the inventory by clicking somewhere else on the screen, right?). And I am also assuming there is a way to remove an ingredient from the recipe in case you make a mistake? The characteristics of the resulting dish (sweet/fruity/savory) have a lovely coloured background which helps in making them stand out on the popup card. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like text and icons blending in with the pages of the cookbook is somewhat of a problem. It feels to me that replacing the coloured flavour text in the cookbook with the same differently-coloured background design would suit better. The glowing effect around the ingredients when looking at the recipes makes it slightly hard to properly see the ingredients with the light outline, although I'm not sure whether it would be best to remove the glowing, adjust the outline colour, or make the icons slightly bigger, or whether either of those changes is something you are willing to consider. Either way, those are just minor details that caught my eye, perhaps on the bigger screen those wouldn't be an issue at all. Overall the improved system is definitely a leap forward, and as always, I loved the details you put in, really shows the soul of the game, like needing to tap the chef frog's hat to get his attention! And the gently swaying note listing ingredients required for your chosen recipe feels so dynamic and yet unobtrusive, great choice!
Thank you so much for all the suggestions I really appreciate it :)) - Yeaa quite a few people also mentioned the extra click that might be tedious, but I really like the alternative you suggested of just tapping elsewhere on the screen to close it (or even just an x button), that would work for both pc and mobile as well :0 And for removing ingredients, you'd have to press redo and remove all of them (just makes it more realistic lol) - Ooh you have a point :0 I do like the colored backgrounds of the taste attributes, I'll see how they look on the dish result screen >:) - Honestly it's probably a better idea to just remove the glow lol, since it is a cook book maybe it makes more sense for it to just be papery yknow? without any extra flair? - Thank you!! I'm really glad you were able to catch those, especially the swaying note :))
Only 1 thing: please mr.devfrog make it so that cheffrog is actually visible 😭 i didnt notice him and didn't know what you would do to start cooking until you showed him
@@realdevfrog If you are open to suggestions a subtle animation where he peeks over the cauldron then goes back down to where just his hat is visible, like he's checking if you are still there, would get across him hiding and being interactable I believe
@@realdevfrog Yeah! I'm not sure if that was your goal but you mentioned he was supposed to be hiding so I was just thinking what could preserve him hiding while making it clear there is a character to interact with
Such a great example of what a second pass of polish can do for a game. Everything was lovely as it was, but it's at such a great level with the changes! Congrats on one year, and all of the progress.
I think it would be cool if the main menu screen changed in appearance depending on what time of day it was! Aww man, I can’t wait to get the game- gl dude!
Very awesome work but I think the inventory design in the new kitchen is a step back? Even in your demo you had to click so many times just to add the ingredients, since it's closed and you have to open it every single time you add one ingredient. Whereas previously you could just drag and drop easier
Thank you!! I get what you mean, the extra clicks could get tedious, maybe it can appear on mouse hover of just stay on the screen when you're adding ingredients :)
Absolutely obsessed with the progress you’ve made for this game and I can’t wait to play it. The cooking system looks awesome. Depending on how many recipes there are it might be useful to have a bookmarks system or something similar. I would also recommend to put some links to your socials, Discord Server, Website etc. on the main menu, similar so Hades. But that would probably be a late stage add on. Really excited to see what’s next. ❤
Thank you!! I'm really glad you feel that way :)) If you mean a tab for "favorited"/bookmarked dishes, that's a great idea!! I've currently already have them sorted by category but this extra one would go a long way :0 And yea! I'll definitely be adding some socials eventually >:)
The new art look beautiful! Frog Island has shown to be a unique project from the start and it so much potential waiting to be revealed. I can't wait to see what's to be added next. Also, is Pymon an interactable character or just part of placeholder text? Thanks for the video, DevFrog!
Yooooo, My froggy friend (im pushing this nickname till the end), this update is amazing!. I love it! Buttttttttt i do have feedback 1. For the cookbook, dont you think it will be tiring for the player to flip through pages? Maybe add a skip page feature that goes through multiple pages, or a bookmark feature, and maybe a star icon that brings you straight to new recipes 2. Little throwback, but remember the sleepy shop frog? well it would work for the chef too, but that should be in the polishing stage of the game. 3. The title screen looks amazing, which made me think, will achievements be in the game? and if so maybe they can be put on the title screen to showcase progress 4. Also how many save slots will there be? MAN ITS BEEN ALMOST 2 YEARS SINCE THE START OF FI. 2 YEARS ever since i left that one comment, That is so crazy, my froggy friend you have gone so far in the past 2 years. I hope everything goes well, and that FI will go to new heights!
HI CABLER thanks for all the feedback >:) 1. I've actually added some at the top for all the different dish categories! But I'll also be adding a "favorite" tab that players can add specific dishes too 2. Yeaaa for sure! 3. Yes >:) I'm gonna add so many achievements to the game I love achievements can't get enough of them 4. Probably 1 for now, unless it's like super easy to create multiple but for now I have no idea how 😭 Time flies so fast....but I'm really thankful for all the support you've given me through development so thank you :))
Man i was at the first ever devlog and now its been a year? I mean what, Your games style always made me feel warm!, Its crazy how amazing games can be with just one guy, i am so exited for it to come out!
The new cooking screen and map layout both look really cute! It's so crazy to think that it's been over a year since this project first started... You've really come a long way in that time!
God it's so cool to see how far you've come! I remember the first time you popped up on my timeline randomly like a year ago, I've never stopped thinking of frogs ever since.. On a serious note though, the game looks absolutely stunning. Great job 👏🐸
Person pet peeve ai have. About drag-n-drop: you open the ingredients menu the same way, but when you click any component - they drop down from the top into the pot. Then, if you want to change any ingredient you still have the bar you have with all of em listed and you can click on specific element to replace it. Can also be that you pick up and use a ladle to cook, instead of clicking on cook. (Can look at potion maker for such interactions) Maybe even a toggle, just ai dislike drag-n-drop in a long run. Just a suggestion) Game looks mega-nice. There's something about a dev doing a cozy game because he has a vision, instead of as a form of group therapy after quitting AAA studio.
Thanks for the suggestion:)) And yea, maybe having it either stay, or reappear on hover could remove the need for an extra click :0 If it helps, players can bulk cook dishes once they've mastered it so that removes the need to manually cook them :0 And thank you!!
This overhaul looks fantastic. One suggestion I have from this is to use something like a shader to highlight interactiable objects when you hover them. In the kitchen the recipes look very blended into the background and its not obvious just from sight that you can click on them. A little outline or tween of thee scale etc would make it obvious that these could be interacted with.
Thank you!! And yea I agree as well, it's kinda hard to tell that the recipe page is actually something that can be clicked on, I'll def need to make it a bit more obvious :0
you should make it so that the title screen gets more and more frogs as you progress in the game, so that players get motivated to try to progress when they see their title screen frogs
WAIT this is actually a great idea I would love to add something like this :0 Would also give a sense of progression every time you login to the game :p
I love these overhauls!! they're so cute and the cooking one especially made me happy. Though, I noticed in the menu that the map icon is a scroll, which I don't think would be very clear to new players, especially with the map redesign? I still love the art for it though! I'm super excited for more devlogs :D
So I love the new design for cooking screen, just wanted to add a few little things! - Some sounds are for sure missing, but you probably know that, right? Placing a log into a fire, etc. - When dragging ingredients to the pot, player has to click on the ingredients bar every time they want to add another one, maybe the big raw ingredients popup should hide for a moment and then come on the screen once again. - When a new recipe is added in pops on the screen and then disappears, maybe it would be nice that it would fly to to recipe book on the table on left, so it even better shows that it is added to the book. - And a final thing, the recipe book for sure will get really repetitive when looking for a specific recipe and flipping all the pages. It would be nice to have a default compressed "all recipes" page, so you can see all recipes from a given category as a squares (similar to the inventory) and then click on the one you want to go to the individual page :) Cheers, and good luck!
Thank you!! - Yeaa for sure I'll be adding sfx closer to game release and its gonna be epic - Getting rid of that extra click would be helpful! And yea, it could also be something that appears on mouse hover maybe? - Oooh I love this idea I'll see if I can implement it :) - If you're talking about recipes categories, I've added lil bookmarks at the top to quickly switch between them :D an all recipes page could be fun to scroll through as well lol
Amazing progress was sad not to see the revised code for the cooking. I get satfaction from seeing working code turned optimzed code. Good job and good luck very excited for frog island
Wow, I love cooking one (1) cheesecake slice in a giant cauldron. But jokes aside, this looks so good. The before and after is such a big difference and how far you have come is amazing. I cant wait to finally get this game for myself 😊
Loving those good good graphics, just maybe add some water to the cooking pot? cause now its the opposite where the food looks like its floating lol. Or add sparkles so its a ✨magic pot✨
This new system is so much better I love it! I think it’s a little silly that when we add salt it just goes to swim in the pot (the whole bottle haha) also I didn’t realize you can click on papers to see the recipe book, bc it doesn’t lit up like other buttons
Thank you!! Yea maybe I should change that 😭 but then again its a magical pot soooo And yeaa I should definitely make the recipe pages more obvious that it can be clicked :0
you should put a scroll bar on the side of the cooking inventory. right now when i first saw it it wasn't immediately obvious that you had to scroll down to see the other ingredients
Hey! I love your channel soooo much!!!! After rewatching, I learned so much ideas to use for my own game!!!! :) Thanks for making frog island! I will definitely support the crowdfunding! You deserved it
Oh dear! I missed a video! 😢 I’m so sorry devfrog! The cooking revamp looks amazing! It’s much more immersive and the small details in the background and frogs give it so much character! And I really like the new icons! So cute and delicious looking! 😊 It’s been so much fun watching the workings of your game and it coming to life, from beginning to now! Thank you so much!
The devlog will always be here so no worries >:) And thank you!! I'm really glad you like all the new changes >:) thanks for all your support since the beginning ❤
It's so cool to see all the differences and changes from where you started to now! I absolutely love the update to the cooking area😍 ngl I want a pot like the cooking pot!
I love all the new changes! This devlog really highlights all your progress as a game developer :P If am allowed to nitpick on something, I believe the clouds around the map being a frame of the camera spoil the intended effect. The clouds should be a frame for the map, not the camera frame, so you know those areas are "unknown", they might even hint new islands in future updates if you wanted to do so. Really nice work!
Oh my gosh! This looks amazing. I absolutely love the new cooking system and can’t wait to try it out. Can you post a RU-vid short or a little video of failing to cook and the frog’s reaction?
The rehaul looks wonderful! I'm so glad you kept the engravings on the pot, they were so charming. The floating ingredients you use now is a welcome overhaul I didn't know was needed until I saw it! I still hope you add a reduced difficulty option for the cooking mini game, as that purple "perfect" bar is very small, to encourage players with disabilities or poor reaction speeds. In regards to 4:59 though, you throw in the entire sugar and flour still in their glass bottle and bag, which is very funny to me. I'm not saying it needs overhauling though! I just think it's funny. In regards to the map, I think it being dark at night is a GENIUS idea. However, you say you want it to be shrouded in clouds for mystery on its location (very clever I think) but then when you zoom in, the cloud border is still there. Surely the cloud border should vanish when you've zoomed in? All it's doing is blocking some of the edges of the map. Even at 7:36 when you zoom in, Flower Fields becomes obscured by those clouds and you have to scroll the map to see it again. Overall I'm so excited for how it's coming along. The visuals, as always, are superb. The title screen is phenomenal. All the visuals are amazing, from the food icons to the little hanging charms on the side of the houses. The blurriness of the food boxes to show depth of field when you're looking for chef frog are a brilliant touch. I will say though, that the teapot on top of the chef's house looks... Incomplete? I think that's because it's plain, unlike the tiles of the roof. Perhaps it, like the cook pot, needs some kind of engraving? It just looks like a different style from the house, which is a work of art just by itself. Very excited for the next update, whenever it comes along! Take care and take your time!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate your suggestions and kind words :)) - I can absolutely add a reduced difficulty option, maybe even some potions (if I end up making the apothecary/potion system) to make it easier to make perfect dishes :0 - Magical cooking pot >:)) I also think its silly that you have to throw in a whole bottle or package so ill prolly keep it that way lol - Yeaa you've got a point, the clouds shouldn't be static when zooming in/panning so I'll fix that up :0 - And yea the teapot on the kitchen could use some engravements/extra details I'll see what I can do to make it better >:) Thanks again for all your support, I'm glad you were able to notice all the lil details :D
i think it would be cool if we could walk in that world. idk, i like to control a character to explore the map, it feels more alive and for me makes me more curious to explore
I also agree, but my original vision with the game was to have it be a worthy successor to neko atsume, and implementing a moving character would basically require me to rebuild the game from the ground up, but maybe in a future game I make >:)
Can't wait to play this! Suuuper cozy vibe. Awesome changes! I love seeing your progress. You have definitely inspired me to get myself together and finally start to develop my game too :D
I'm so glad you're still working on the game and releasing updates! (even tho I've seen them on discord hehe) Anw it seems to me that if a person doesn't know that kitchen is a kitchen and you can cook there, and even more so that there is a character here, after interacting with whom you can access different activities, then they'll probably leave without even knowing about chef. Maybe try adding a speech bubble that would randomly pop up and say something like "croak" or "🎶" or whatever? So that it's clear that someone is there. uhh sorry if such a feature already exists, maybe I didn't notice it ( >•̀ )ᦣ
Thank you!! I'm committed till the very end >:) Also I love this idea, lil crocks or music notes or tinkering particles would make it a lot more obvious, I can definitely see people missing it on the first go 😭
Looks amazing! You've made incredible progress during those 12 months :) There is something I'm curious of, and I don't think you mentioned it earlier - who is the player character? I mean, are we another frog, are we a human, a disembodied entity? Sorry if you already mentioned it in previous devlogs! Also, I know you probably already have a full list of dishes, but I kinda hope there are lily-patties of some sort ^^
Thank you!! The player is a human, but how they got on the island and what their story is, you'll have to uncover yourself >:) And yeaa lily-related foods would be super cool :0
