Does your laptop still overheat?
Here what you need to do to safe your laptop!
Steps:
1) Open Advanced power option with "Win + R" and "powercfg.cpl" command
2) Find "Change plan settings" and "Change Advanced Power Settings"
3) In Power Options window find "Processor Power Management"
4) Under it find "Processor performance boost mode"
5) Put setting to "Disabled".
6) Done, gl & hf :)
If option is not there - change registry settings:
1) Open Registry "Win + R" and "regedit" command
2) Follow the path:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7
3) Change option under name "Attributes" from "1" to "0".
* If this does not work - try changing it to "2".
4) Close all windows and reopen Power options once again!

Thank you for this, I was experiencing 89-95 degree CPU temps on my laptop when gaming (MWO) before. I really didn't want to go through repasting as my friends have had hit and miss results with that route. After I did this, temps dropped to 65-80 degrees when gaming without any degradation in performance. Now I just set up a mode where boost is on so I can use it when I need my i7's full power, usually work with multiple excel sheets and database queries and chrome running. Thanks again.

in windows 10, instead theres a maximum processor state, set it to 99% to disable turbo boost and make sure in minimal processor state there isnt 100% because it wont disable turbo if its at 100%, i suggest 1-5% , 10% if you really want but it doesnt matter as soon as its not 100

Does anyone know why windows had this option disabled by default? If its only downside is marginally worse performance it doesn't make sense why they wouldn't just leave the option unless it was just erroneously removed with some update.Almost seems like there might be a reason why this may actually be worse for you're cpu having it off than having it enabled, even though that's the complete opposite thing you would expect. It should in theory extend the life of the cpu by keeping at a cooler range but maybe that would cause it to send power through the cores in a way that isnt really efficient for them and even though overall temp might b cooler they might be over working some cores and not spreading load correctly but I have no evidence for that at all just seems really weird that they would have this inaccessible by default. I'm also a noob so if this is a stupid question there ya go
@allvideos123
@allvideos123 2 года назад
doing this procedure and changing the max performance from 100% to 99% have the same effect, that`s why this option is disabled by default. there`s no point of having 2 commands that does the same thing.
@GregorHagedorn
@GregorHagedorn Год назад
@@allvideos123 I cannot confirm what you say, at least not with a Thinkpad and the current Update of Windows 11. Setting Maximum Processor State to 50 or 99% did nothing to stop the CPU to boost to the max. The performance boost mode option (enabled with Attributes = 2, 1 did not work) did the job. In my case it did help to vastly increase battery life, by roughly > 50%.

Your tutorial helped a lot! My mini pc was overheating because I had it on the table and the bottom ventilation was blocked, and also it is summer. Firstly, I put the mini pc on a laptop stand to unblock the ventilation holes. I disabled the turbo boost, but the Load % in the Core Temp app increased a lot and although I don't fully understand it, a large percentage was worrying. So I chose the efficient setting of turbo boost and temp and load back to normal. Thanks :)

In addition, I suggests replacing the thermal paste with Honeywell PTM7950 phase-change material is more thermally conductive than the best pastes. Replace low performance thermopads with gummy thermal paste Laird 607 or Upsiren U6 Pro. And make undervolting CPU and GPU at -100mV or more if it will be stable.
@md.nurulalam949

Your free suggestions are really good actually. But most of the users never have listened about Thermal Throttling. How they could know about thermal Pad or Paste!! I have a i7-10750H in a dell alienware g7 - notorious for overheating- for the last few days I looked for ways to reduce heating- and most (90%) are all about undervolting. Unfortunately my cpu does not allow undervolting via throttle stop or any other method short of a bios change and unlock. Which is far more then I was willing to do. Temps on avg running Tarkov or CSGO were 90-100C - I have a 4K OLED screen with max 60fps (I know 🤦🏽‍♂️ but it’s so clear and crisp) - on avg getting 30-40 fps. - But after making this change - WOW! Temps down to 60-70c - consistently. FPS actually went up since my cpu was not bound by the heat - steady 50-60 fps on max settings -(Gpu is an rtx 2070 max q). Heating issue fixed with 0 undervolting and 0 programs downloaded. This is the way 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽 Thank you 🙏🏾 I appreciate this more than you know. God bless 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽

Changing the value from "0" (or "1") to "2" does the trick on the latest Windows 11 build (as of 2024), as changing it to 1 didn't do anything for me. That being said, keep in mind what this is doing is it will limit your CPU's performance, so in my case it limits my CPU to 75% of max processing power and prevents turbo boosting from occuring (so it caps on my system at 2.5 GHz even though the CPU can boost up to 3.2 or 3.5 GHz), so processes do run slower as a result and can impact performance for things that need it like gaming, however it has helped on my Lenovo Legion gaming laptop keep the fans reasonable. I may try a few other settings in the Power Settings window just to see what else i could try (I just selected "disabled" for now) so it varies from about 1.5 Ghz I think up to 2.5 Ghz so it still adjusts the CPU speed based on demand but just doesn't "turbo boost").

This has actually made the biggest impact on my CPU temperature. After applying some Artic Silver thermal paste to my chipsets my temps only dropped from 95c to 88c, after making these changes, 67c consistently. This is also saving me major battery life as my fans are not spinning up constantly.

This definitely helps. The problem is that my CPU lost like 25% fps due to it. So I decided to lower my core frequency somewhere between my Turbo frequency - 5.2 GHz and Performance-core base frequency - 3.20 GHz. In ThrottleStop I set it up to 4.6 GHz and barely lost some fps, and my CPU temps fell from 85 to 65 degrees.

Hej Andrii, I have a MSI laptop working 24/7 which behaves strangely after your great addition. Intel i5 11400H - 45 watt tdp-up - 2.7 Ghz base - 4.5 Ghz turbo When I start the multitasking application, Turbo kicks in at 4.1 Ghz and uses 63 watt. This continues until temps hit 90 when the speed reduces to 3.5 Ghz and 45 watt. After some time it reduces again to 2.7 Ghz and 25 watt. After that it switches between 3.5 Ghz (tdp watt med mild turbo) and 2.7 Ghz (tdp base). I have a similar laptop with intel i5 10240U which does not exceed tdp-up 2.1 Ghz When comparing the two, I found that 11400H had the the most powerful power plan ! Now I have changed to balanced, and the laptop now behaves as expected. Your article needs to warn about the power plan !

Do you think limiting CPU freq. or lower proc.power.state to 95-90-80% etc. when also using Gigabyte Control Center(Power Saving Mode/Perform.Mode etc.) can cause incompatibilty? I am with Ryzen 5 5600H Laptop and I had a lot of freezes in win 11 when I started tweaking those stuff. Now I preinstailled win 10 and I got a freeze again, and the only thing I did was change stuff in power settings - set a 3300mhz limit and lower power.proc.state to 95%; Is it possible that the CPU needs that power and temp and freezes, because I limit it?

You're a genius. I have spent 2 days trying to stop my CPU overheating after installing Windows 11. From the first day my PC kept shutting down and I found out it was when the Ryzen 5900X cpu reached 110 degrees, when playing games. From googling, it said to update BIOS and all chipset drivers, so after I did that i got it down to 91 degrees and stopped the shutdowns but with your advice I now have it down to 65 degrees. I had to adjust the registry like you said as well. Does anyone know if it is a Windows 11 thing that introduced the aggressive setting that caused this? Thanks!
@AndriiTalksTech
@AndriiTalksTech 2 года назад
You are absolutely welcome! I think in Windows 11 it is the same - aggressive means boost ON. I have tried pretty much all setting and find out non of them working but aggressive and disabled, so I have no idea why MC does that and who would use it.

If you don't want to risk messing with the registry, you can also undervolt using Intel XTU (for intel CPU) or Ryzen Master (for AMD CPU) to drop all core clocks and MSI Afterburner to underclock/undervolt the GPU. Not sure if ThrottleStop works with Intel 12 gen and above since there's Performance and Efficiency Cores.

Glad I found this. Although I don't have the option you showed, I only made my max CPU from 100% to 80% and it helped lower the temp from 80+° to 50-60°C. @@Rian-go1gx Honestly I had to turn this CPU boost back on after a while as I noticed my computer wasn't being as responsive. What helped me the most with reducing lag was physically cleaning my laptop (HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop). I simply wiped dust off the fans and vents using a toothbrush. I also bought a laptop stand to allow better airflow. Has been helping a lot! Seems like main cause of my lag is overheating.
@Kunaiko278
@Kunaiko278 3 месяца назад
@@Rian-go1gx it's normal bc you reduced performance to decrease temperature. You can try another options instead of turning it off but for most people it's better to just turn it off anyways. Btw, I'm not an expert but I don't recomend to have +80ºC on the cpu, don't forget that most cpus will stop working at 100% once they reach 96ºC to not overheat (which is usually at 100ºC)

So disappointed that this didn't work for me. I followed the steps but do not have a "turbo boost" option to turn off at whatever step that was. Where else might I find it? I have sent the computer back twice. It overheats quickly and stops working. Is there an option to simply keep the fan on all the time? That wouldn't be ideal but would help. I so appreciate any suggestions. This thing is driving me crazy!
