Looking good Mike! Get yourself some Chassis Saver and get in the engine bay and paint. For the few hours of effort with that nice clean engine build, a fresh rust free engine compartment will give it the finishing touch.

Glad to see the rig is coming along Mike. I have an FZJ80 myself and I believe I have a small leak in my HG so soon I'm going to be tearing everything down myself and replacing all the gaskets, front seal, new radiator, hoses, belt etc.Need to bring it up to speed before I can do more with it.

I'm pretty sure the shop will do that...but make sure they will replace the fuel filter...and see if they can replace the charcoal canister. I did my head gasket with my club here in Kansas City 2 years ago..fun times. I hope to see you all in October.

Nice, they probably won't allow you to go in and film the actual work they are doing. That is what I like to see. Putting that head together and the entire motor. Like the wrenching stuff. You should put a supercharger on there while it's all apart too. Thanks Michael

Time to replace idle bearing tensioners, belts, may be starter and alternator, belts etc I just did all of that on my Toyota 4 cylinders. Leaving to Baja driving it this coming Wednesday.

Always carry that wits end bypass just in case phh goes out on the trail! Good news is that doing phh should be pretty easy now!

Oh and don't forget to carry extra hose or heater valve cause if that breaks and you keep driving, same result will happen.

It's cool to see someone keep the petty 6. Most rebuilds throw these out and go for a big beefy turbo diesel, and they're great. But 1fzs are so cheap and reliable, so many available parts.

I’m only 20 miles from Top Shop. Looking at making the call. After 350,00 miles I’m finally going to pull the triggger on rebuilding before I don’t have a chioce. I still have a lot of ground to cover, and I want to do it in my 80.

That's so cool that they can save the head. I blew 2 different head gaskets on two different cars and had to basically scrap both. All the best w/ the new engine! I'm curious as I'm new to your channel... Are there any Chevy/GMC Suburban owners in the Overland group? I'm trying to find my people in the various communities.

Find out how many 10mm sockets they have readily available. Didn't go with longer aftermarket brake lines or custom length brake lines? Hopefully, you're not going back to stock since its obviously too short for what you do with your FZJ80.

I've got a 2012 Toyota Rav4 diesel in England with just 47k miles. Full Toyota service history too and well maintained. But my head gasket has failed and Toyota want £9600 to put a new engine in as they don't believe in rebuilding them here. So instead my Rav4 is a write off at just 8 years old. Luckily I had a warranty that will pay out it's value.

Modern diesels are junk. There's a reason the new rav4 has no diesel option and rumour is that the 300 lc won't either

So expensive though... $9k with no labor. I bet he gets through this for $4k in parts? I hope to find out, I just hit 200k on mine and just got a fresh oil lieak. Considering an LS swap, but r2.8 is a bit out of my price range. Even if the LS is 7k... I dunno.

You MIGHT replace the head gasket before failure? It’s a toss up and judgement call. Some folks get 400k

It was a gas engine with hundreds of thousands of very hard miles put on it and it was worked year round throughout its life. The fact it lasted 20+ years without a hiccup until this point enduring the abuse it has is absolutely impressive to say the least. Put another 6 banger toyota engine in her and it'll last another 25 years and 300k miles with proper maintenance.

Look up pesky heater hose kit for fzj80 and you'll find the part numbers. They are awesome, but not cheap. He is doing it right by putting on the good stuff while the engine is out, those are called the 'pesky heater hose' for a reason (and firewall hoses). They thermal cycle really bad and blow up after 50-100k miles and you overheat.

Hugh Smitham the exhaust is ported through the back of the head and warps the head causing head gasket leaks and other issues.

Hugh Smitham no the actual exhaust off the header routes throw the back of the head... then to a stand pipe it’s a very bad design

Hugh Smitham only the American models had this and only the American models have the 6th cylinder head gasket issue because of this.

Thing of beauty. I know you like the electric car. But the electric car, in all of its wonder, is simply the most boring and ugly mechanical thing out there. Unfortunately it works, signaling the beginning of the loss of the skills and ability of what that shop and thousands like it do. S
