Great build dude! Like your reasoning for building it out too. I'm proud of my weekend warrior build 03 Dakota especially when pulling up next to more expensive trucks.

These dakotas are seriously underrated. If I didn't have my 2nd gen cummins I'd snatch one up in a heartbeat.

Looking forward to more videos of the Dakota. We still have our '02, QuadCab, 4x4 with 4.7 that we bought new 20 years ago. It's now our extra vehicle and I'm thinking of slowly building it into an overland rig as well. Nice work on your rig.
@kuhndog-1196
@kuhndog-1196 2 года назад
20 years of use? How many miles? What is your honest thoughts on the 4.7? I have a 99 durango with a 5.2 but I want to go to a crew cab dakota. way more have the 4.7 than the 5.9. Options are slim out there.
@chrisb6162
@chrisb6162 2 года назад
@@kuhndog-1196 Sorry about late reply. I think my 4.7 would still be great if I hadn't overheated it. The main thing you will hear about 4.7's in the Dakota is overheating. My wife was driving the Dakota on cross country trip when thermostat went bad and she slightly overheated it. After that it had some cooling issues and slowly it ruined the head. If it wasn't for the overheating issue I think we never would have had to replace the original 4.7 with a remanufactured. The old 4.7 and the new one have never used a lick of oil. After we got the new 4.7 we put in a Heavy Duty radiator and cooling has never been an issue. By the way, we live out West and the 4.7 would always get hot climbing steep grades until we got the heavy duty radiator. We just got back from a 1500 mile round trip to Utah and teh old Dakota did great. Just passed 200k with about 40k on the new 4.7.
@chrisb6162
@chrisb6162 2 года назад
@@kuhndog-1196 But I forgot to add that if I had to do it over I might have gone with the old cast iron 5.9 with its old technology and no aluminum. But the 4.7 has been fine.
@kuhndog-1196
@kuhndog-1196 2 года назад
@@chrisb6162 from what I have seen the cooling is the only real issue with these 4.7s. I'm in CO so I live in hilly country lol. I have seen some videos from Martin built about the cooling system in these and I feel like they just over (or under) thought them. They seem really solid.

I've built 4 different overland vehicles (two of them Toyotas) and have yet to spend over $10k all in. My current rig is a 1989 Isuzu Trooper and it is fantastic off road and I have room for a single mattress inside. That jewel cost me $3k for the vehicle and by now all of my gear has been long paid for. Each one of the four were dependable vehicles that I would happily take anywhere. I do almost all of my own work and that help.

I just recently got a green 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT 4X4. I am seriously thinking about doing an overland/bugout build on it. It has the 3.9V6 Magnum in it with 118k in miles on it. Got it for 2500.00 to replace my 2003 Kia Sorento EX since the timing belt went bad and the engine went bleh on me. Though about using CUCV parts and military surplus parts for the build.

Awesome build! I have the same truck and am getting ready to build it into an Overland rig as well. I have the same lift kit on my truck and I'm wanting to go ahead and upgrade the suspension. Have you done that and if so what parts did you go with?

Sweet setup man! What kind of fuel mileage do you get? Thinking of getting one with the 5.2. We live near the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas, high has a lot of tight trails that full size trucks and larger struggle with so the Dakota with a V8 seems like the perfect size! Every other midsize truck with a V6 has to be rear geared with like 5.4s or so to run 35 inch tires and bigger
@Caligunz_

How many inches is your lift ?

This is one of the coolest Dakota builds i've seen yet! Did you have to re-gear for the 33s?

Still running stock gears
@SoreTv
@SoreTv 2 года назад
You should only have to re-gear if you go up to 35s and larger, even still 35s shouldn’t be too bad. But 40s and higher are a must.
