Walk around of the JL Rubicon we built for the purpose of camping, overlanding and rock crawling with our Golden Retrievers (Cooper and Kaia). Suspension, Wheels Tires, Skid Plates, Roof Rack, Spare Tire Carrier, and Utility.
Thanks Stephanie! I'm still riding Powell skateboards and Rubys are awesome. :) I'm just a RU-vid Newb, but hoping to get more jeep content with the puppies up this weekend.
Love the build so far! Looks sensational too. I noticed the rim and tire setup in the video is different than the rim and tire setup in the thumbnail. What are the rim and tire stats on the thumbnail nail setup? I love the stance! That chunky sidewall is sweet imo.
I have the 2021 JLU rubicon 392 and looking to go with a lift, but everyone has a different recommendation. I’m on 33 now but like to keep it a Low COG for steep climbs , thinking of 35 with a 2.5 lift but keep the same rims. What are your thoughts on this and suggestions??.
If I'm not mistaken the 392 comes with the factory 2" lift. I believe one of the owners at Metal Cloak is running 37 X 12.5 Patagonias on the factory suspension with no additional lift. Keeping the COG as low as possible is the right thing to do. That's why we have avoided a roof top tent so far. One thing that can help clearance for tires is an inner fender delete, or just after market tube fenders. I just havent done enough research on these items to feel comfortable with that kind of modification.
@@GoldensGoneWheelin I carry enough weight with the fridge iceco 50 and solar generator and all the other stuff to offset the RTT if I go that route with the rubicon. The XR rubicon I know has the 2”lift , my jeep is a good height but 35 would help when airing down . I appreciate the help Thanks
I know people like privacy and all by blurring out your license plate but you missed one at 18:14. Its gonna get showed eventually. Weather its your video or someone elses.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to be more detailed with cost breakdowns in the future. Maybe I'll do individual breakdowns for future product reviews.
expensive af is more accurate. Roof rack is 5k steps 170 a pair, rotopax rack 500 plus 70 per lock and 40 per container, suspension 6-7k most likely, 270 degree awning a grand.
Look at the LOD Destroyer rear bumper. They have spare tire carrier option, trail rack, tool option, jerry can…. Receiver hitch is built in! I cut my trailer 7-way into the bumper instead of reusing the factory bracket. Robust bumpers!
I went with the rhino rack but with the Maximus-3 mounting (lowest profile of anything on market). The rhino rack backbone you have to drill through the side of the roof. With the maximus-3 you drill through the top and mount directly to the frame. I believe the static and dynamic weight are the most of any mounting system. Also the holes will be hidden very well if you ever want to remove the rack. That is all mounted on a 2021 JL 392. I have the Maximus-3 tire carrier on my 2016 JK and love it (it mounts to standard hinge placement) I am not sure of total weight allowance or about the JL tire carrier. Great company also. Michigan based, veteran owned and all US made.
Well I can't fit in the garage anymore. :) I think the rack with nothing on it was at ~83", but if you add the Roam mounts and the awning its just tall.
Hey Bobby, I ended up using a combination of the 2" Universal Stand Off Kit from ARS found here adventureracksystems.com/universal-stand-offs-for-ars-rack-systems.html to clamp onto the ARS rack. Then I used the brackets that came with the OVS awning bolted to the stand off mounts. Note that I did use three of these brackets because I didnt know if only two of them would be enough for the larger 270 degree awning. Hopefully that helps. Let me know if you need more info.
Buy the large tank to the green one pounders and refill them. Put them in the freezer, and they will take 1.2 pounds. It would be nice to hear the base cost of the vehicle and the cost of each upgrade.
Extremely thoughtful content, I’ve got a quite few of your mods, some I now want, and some that you mentioned you may have preferred. Would really like to see you continue the journey, over rocks and through RU-vid - keep Jeepin’!
This is a great question. I've been meaning to put the jeep on a scale to compare and haven't had time. My guess is probably around 500lbs. I've started putting the jeep on a diet most recently by going to a different roof rack system.
Well done video, surprised this isn't your daily job. You definitely should have more followers and the Jeep is clean... in the sense of fit and finish. I know it wasnt a sponsored vid, but links in the description would be a nice to have.
Thanks Don. I really appreciate it. It was literally my first ever RU-vid video. I really do need to go back and add links to several videos. That's really good advice.
Did you or others here compare the LOD DESTROYER rooftop rack with the sliding off Roof top rack with the RTT say still on it? Had the multiple inserts as well with the RTT RACK. Also is a No drill system. I'm shopping for a no drill Roof rack. Did you say you had to drill into cowl? You ststed this ARS is stronger thn Gobi. Is it stronger than the LOD DESTROYER ROOFTOP RACK if anyone knows? Thanks for walkaround. I'm going to Metal Cloak as well. Loved see your bumpers etc as well as i am finalizing my choices for my Overland build. FYI GenRight has gret swing out tire carrier and replacement fender flares nd tught inner wheels wells all aluminum. If you havea great powdercoater, they can powdercoat the fsnder flares with matching color ns put. Finl clear coat on top not just black. I pln to do thtto get more articulation. You mentiomed you would have go to Dana60 if larger tires. Not so. Look up RCV PERFORMANCE drive shafts for D44. Keeps clearance and just as strong as Dana60 withouy the added weight. Replaces U joints the U Joints thus removing the stress and allow you the true full articulation your upgarded rig is capable of. Lite Brite has a great video about it. It was my Jeep Specialty mechanic and lifelong Jeeper that told me about it and then i did further research. I am absolutely changing out my axle shafts. Just FYI what I have.... 21 JLUR. Thx, Pam✌️
@GoldensGoneWheelin thank you as well. You convinced me on the Adventure Labs cargo area system as well over the goose gear. I was back and forth on that decision. Was gonna go with the goose gear rear seat delete but now curious about the option you chose. Thx for great walkaround. Most of your choices were on my list as final Def or between 2 options. Keep the videos coming! ✌️
Thanks!! You just reminded me I need to go weigh it again after making the mods! I'll try to remember to respond again as soon as I do. Have almost 12k miles on the Patagonia so far.
Yep, that’s what we ended up doing. 😀. Replacing our Jeep’s Adventure Rack Systems rack with a Rhino-Rack Backbone and Pioneer Platform- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f9kNslkf1Kk.html
In that video I was using a combination of the Metal Cloak brackets to connect to the 2"bar found here: metalcloak.com/two-inch-awning-side-mounts-jk-jl-wrangler-jt-gladiator.html together with the brackets that came from Overland Vehicle Systems that came with the 270 degree awning.
@GoldensGoneWheelin yes they're more than great for my use since I go camping more than rock crawling but since nittos came out with 38s I gotta pull the trigger
I have the Cav Fab rear tire carrier. Holds up to a 40 and no hole by the hinges. I want to get the bead grips, but I don’t see how-12 is good enough backspacing for a 13.5 inch wide tire.
I'll check out that Cav Fab tire carrier. I think the -12mm offset can be a bit decieving. The backspacing for the wheels is actually 4.75". I think the 701 may have been made specifically for the JK and JL.
Great video and love your build. Looks like the color is Earl - very nice. I've got a 2024 Rubicon X in Anvil on order (after 3.5 months, I just got notice yesterday that Jeep has finally scheduled the build) and I'm planning on also kitting it out for overlanding. I'm planning on much of the same though I'm going to stay on 35's. So it was really great to hear your thoughts and feedback on the mods you made. One question, did you do all the suspension mods while still under warranty. If so, have you had any issues with Jeep honoring the warranty if you had to bring it in.
Richard, You will probably get better gas mileage with the 35s for sure, so stick with those if you dont need bigger. Since doing all the suspension mods myself, I've had the jeep in for warranty work on a cooling hose coupler. The dealership didn't even flinch. In fact all the guys in the service department were complimenting us on the build out. It might depend on the dealership though.
I'm guessing you are referring to trusses on the axle housings. I haven't really seen the need for this so far. If it turns out the stock axles don't hold up, I'll upgrade to 60s. But so far so good. Knock on wood.
@@GoldensGoneWheelin understand. Building my girl out, I needed those trusses and also went full metalcloak, but not the front steering. She's beautiful!
@@GoldensGoneWheelin Thinking seriously about trading my 21JLUR in Sarge for a 24 Earl. Sarge is a great color it just gets too hot in these Central Sierra summers.
Subbed maybe a month ago and now going through your older videos. Love seeing what you had vs what you have now since my build has some similar products I want on it. Keep up the amazing videos as I am enjoying a smaller youtuber, however may the RU-vid algorithm gods be in your favor!
Hey thanks!!! I really appreciate that. It definitely takes time and effort to get decent content up, and I still have a more than fulltime job, so thanks. I just filmed a complete "pack out" video to show how we pack the jeep for long adventures, but I won't get it posted until we get home from the adventure we are on. Guess I need a star link. 😝 Hope to have some great content from the overland journey we are on now.
Nice build. Heavy. Air those Milestars up to 37 and you'll get less feathering and more life out of em on the street. Lite Brite had a great video on this a while back
The 38s have worked out really well for us with the MC 3.5" Game Changer suspension. When we are fully loaded for overlanding we did initially notice some rubbing on the rear plastic inner fender when fully flexed out. If you look at the back where the plastic inner fender meets the stock bumper, there is a small bulge in the plastic. I heated that up with a heat gun and pushed the bulge in to reform it. That fixed the issue. You could also just go with an inner fender delete as well.
Nice build. If you ever want to see some ridiculous remote hidden camp spots let me know. Tons between colfax and Truckee up the 80. Our crew keeps the great sites quiet.
Looks awesome! You can also consider a hitch spare tire carrier. It’s great to hold the 38” and you don’t need to carry the tire with unless your on an ‘adventure’😀 The likelihood you’ll get a flat in town is small. Side note I also carry a tire patch kit.. arb has a great one. As well as emergency valve stems. Super handy. Your jeep looks super sweet!
RTTs arent a waste if you dont want to sleep on the floor and only get a cheaper soft-top setup or DIY... not everyone is comfortable with traditional tents. The world isnt safe and I'd rather take my chances being on the roof or inside the vehicle.
