The life of an overlanding vehicle is a hard one. There is a lot of pressure for these vehicles to perform in the toughest conditions, and get us back home safe. And although I’ve never been left stranded in my vehicle, it has had some pretty frustrating gremlins after the last 40,000km of pretty heavy overlanding across Southern Africa’s most rugged destinations. I didn’t build this vehicle to keep it shiny and new, I built this vehicle to take it out there and have some incredible adventures and see a world that so few get to experience. In that my Toyota Hilux has delivered 150%! But here are a couple things to keep an eye out for on your adventures, and perhaps some preventative maintenance and regular check ups on your vehicle can keep your dream 4x4 going for many years to come! Hi Adrian, thanks for the detailed sharing of issues encountered with your Hilux after 90,000 km of mostly heavy duty use. It would be good if Toyota (& Isuzu etc) engineers gave more attention to engaging with key 'reference' operators like yourself towards gaining a better understanding of problem areas and weaknesses and addressing these as part of a program of continued product improvement. Id suggest sharing this with their product engineers if possible. Regards

THATs why most overlanders drive great big medium duty trucks designed for heavy duty service. Yours is a light duty truck. Toyota did not guess many would try using it as an overlander. !

Feeling bad for you Adrian Good to have the Terrain Tamer team behind you. I am quietly happy that I use a V6 79 and and FJ both that share a 4.0L naturally aspirated petrol engine. So no turbo and these have a manually activated 4H 4L transfer selector. But dusting is still something all of us have to be aware of and mitigate. The extra amount I pay for petrol fuel is less than replacement of turbos think.

Absolutely! The support is incredible! I was tempted after this whole ordeal to go NA as well, but diesel NA is horrible and I’m not brave enough for petrol fuel ups 🤣

@@RoamOverlanding Petrol is not as bad as its thought to be. I get about 1200kms from both my vehicles. The 79 has 200L (130 plus 70 aux) and the FJ 160L standard Tanks. Maintenance is the pocket friendly part compared to Diesel.

Hmmmm wild statement on petrol expense...I have a jeep grand cherokee 5.7l and a 3.0 turbo diesel overland...love the normal aspirated 5.7...but whow...petrol is a high expense vs diesel...

@johanbester4484 I now also have a new LC79 4.5V8 and enjoying the torque and ability to cruise up long hills. I know I have to "nurse" it with the best care to avoid dusting and bad fuel. Hopefully I don't need big injector and turbo replacement bills as opposed to weekly bigger fuel bills at the pump. I think we all just end up paying one day sooner or later regardless of our choices.

Awesome video Adrián, i have a 2023 Hilux with the 2.4 engine and use it to do some mild offroading. After every trip, i try to clean the chassis as best as i can but the e actuator is always dirty with mud and grime. Is there safe way to clean the actuator after a muddy trip? I run the factory bash plates but that offers zero to none protection against mud.

Great info on maintenance. I drive a Vigo. The reason I didn't upgrade to the 8th gen was due to the e-select tcase. I trust the stick! Looking forward to see the new 9th gen next year.

Thanks for your honesty about common issues and possible design flaws. Looking at some other channels one would think their vehicles and equipment are perfect with flawless design. I also appreciate your view on mapping - it is not often that anyone would admit that there could be a possible downside to that. You mentioned that you had the vehicle for 90000km. How much did it have on the clock when you got it?

I think it was interesting to go through the process and see everything that takes the wear and tear! Something has to give at some point carrying that much weight around! I had 83,000km when I got it 👍🏻

Nice summary of the whole job and why was done! I'm currently going though exactly same process on my 2007 Nissan D22 I've been using for overlanding last 12 years. After last 3 years of use and abuse in my country, I had to stop and do a big maintenance. Now I know I should look at my turbo because I have similar symptoms on my ute. One question I have for you is "Do you think if you installed cyclonic-type head to the snorkel the problem could be avoided?" Saludos from Chile

I used my sedans for the same purpose as you use your Hilux. Until around 1983, almost nobody had a 4x4! My Mercedes-Benz 240D circa 1976 accumulated 768,000km without any trouble. My Toyota caught fire due to wires not secured during assembly, chafed through two years later and started a fire underneath the vehicle. Luckily, it happened right next to an autoelectrical shop. They sorted it out after stopping the fire, but it did nothing to let me trust the brand.

Love your hilux. glad its getting a deserved TLC. You can actually just do change oil in the field. and make sure to bring or buy the oil and filters when you hit 3-4k. I change mine every 5k

Two thoughts from an overlander. First, if you do your preventive maintenance yearly, you may have been able to save a lot of money, equipment, and time. Second, buy an FJ Cruiser and you’ll avoid many of your Hilux problems.

oof i didn't know the air filter could let that much dust go past and destroy the turbo. I thought it would just clog up and restrict airflow, but maybe the turbo creates strong enough suction to pull things pass the filter? We never had turbo diesel Toyotas in the US. Pretty much all toyota trucks we had were naturally aspirated petrol. But now, all the new Toyota 4X4s going forward are turbo petrol, so we have a lot to learn about turbo maintenance. Very useful information you shared!

Fan girl moment when TinkerersAdventure comments on your video 😂😂 your videos are our bible around the workshop. My new build I’m starting on has taken a lot of inspiration from your Toyota IFS videos, so will be cool go through that build series with everyone soon! 👌🏻 thanks for dropping in! From what I understand the airbox itself vibrates and shifts on corrugations, causing flex in the airbox and therefore breaking the seal, meaning dust can bypass the filter. Have been looking at doing potentially a custom airbox

That black box is a problem chancing it 2 times myself If you think overlanding is hard on a vehicle try farming in Botswana the new vehicles is very soft My advice is you have two options A white Cruiser or A brown cruiser

This is really helpful. As far as mitigating dust, did you find a snorkel to be helpful? Did you need to change air filters more often? Did you need to add a sock over the intake of the snorkel?

The snorkel definitely helps, I want to add perhaps a pre dust filter sock or a cyclonic filter to the snorkel; snd then I have a terrain tamer airbox stiffener gasket too, and obviously replaced air filters extremely regularly. Another option might be to replace the airbox completely

I believe both the KD and GD engines are both D4D. Its just that the old ones are KD engines and the new ones are GD engines.

Hi Adrian, good presentation and gained a lot of info. One of my 1st thoughts when you start discussing the turbo replacement was that you will have to take it back to DASTEK for a re-tune I have two questions/remarks... The oil catch can work as you stated, I'm concerned about the crankcase seals that might get damaged or leak due to possible higher crankcase pressure? Your experience in this regard? The second one is pertaining the chip that was installed; High EGT's is a result of workload in combination with incorrect air fuel ratio (running to rich) If in this case the turbo wasn't functioning as it should as well as possible slightly incorrect readings on the MAF sensor, there will be the possibility of the EGT's buggering you around. Dirty fuel and thus incorrect spray patterns on the injectors will/can also contribute to higher EGT’s The DASTEK Unichip that you fitted use 5x program settings of which on is the standard map. I would therefore suggest, go to DASTEK themselves and have a discussion with them (next to Waterkloof AFB) As with the vehicle - the person behind the steering wheel …. and a camera - the person behind the camera … and in this case the guy doing the programming of your chip is the most important factor Safe Travels

Yes you’re right! I actually removed my unichip a couple years ago because I was getting engine limp modes etc, probably tied to the previous turbo issues. After that I was advised to remap the vehicle so I did. Then I installed an EGT probe and realised it was tuned like a cowboy, and then I got it retuned but it was hot and weak. By that time the new turbo was probably already beginning its issues, so I went to KSD in the cape and he used a unichip again; he managed to get much better temps but I could tell the system was trying to make boost and it couldn’t because of the turbo, so the issues started again with limp modes etc. I am now on factory, with no unichip. But the vehicle does need a proper remap on the dyno to get it at what the new turbo can provide safely. But the new temps at standard are brilliant, and I’m tempted to leave the remap and keep it as it is 🤣

Hi Adrian, thanks for sharing all those details. It's the unloved part of overlanding. Is there a reason for not using a cyclone filter on top of the snorkel? I always thought they are specially designed for those dusty conditions.

Good question! I would like to get one; however not all the dust in question is being pulled through the snorkel, some actually gets in through the box itself in the engine bay; but less dust is less dust, so dont be surprised if you do see a cyclonic head on soon

Nope, my vehicles last services at Toyota where under warranty, when those ended I have done my servicing at 4x4 services centers and through private mechanic friends etc, because the nature of the vehicle is so custom and the conditions are very tough. I do a lot more servicing and checks on things that normal

Many thanks, am a diamond explorer so my vehicles are used predominantly in the bush. They are also used for overlanding too as far afield as Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. They are also customized to some degree. I have them serviced at my local Toyota and so far so good after 20 years or so.

It'd be interesting to know if an advanced diagnostic scanner like the Autel Maxisys Ultra, probably with a Toyota technical data subscription, would be able to locate some of the electronic issues that took hours to manually trace, or if the vehicles sensors, ecu etc dont 'stretch' that far & would still require most of the labour intensive testing that the Technicians had to do.

To be fair to the Hilux, what you have chosen as the base for your Overlander build is the absolute minimum spec. A lot of the problems that you’ve had could have been avoided if the vehicle was prepped in anticipation of these problems. I don’t want to be mean-spirited but I would never have bought an ex-hire vehicle to do what you want to do! We have a small fleet of GUN126R Hilux here (outback Aus) and they get absolutely flogged in rough conditions carrying heavy loads, all day every day. Serviced comprehensively every 5000 km, we haven’t had any problems and definitely no need to upgrade to Land Cruiser.

Problem is you cannot just replace the actuator at toyota unless you buy a pirate actuator.

We bought the actuator from Toyota and took the vehicle to Cape Transmissions, where they fit it for us. It’s not an easy process because there is calibration that needs to happen between the switch, front and rear actuators. We struggled but Nicky eventually got it right

The problem with Hilux now is its mass produced vehicles so quality issue might occur so it’s best to go Land Cruiser or LX500D

Agree. If you want to stay with Toyota and do proper overlanding then get a Cruiser. The lesser Toys and vehicles such as Ranger are not up to it.

Yeah, hilux's are tough vehicles...but realistically they are just light commercial utes intended for trades people and farmers, so they have their limits.

honestly that model hilux in Australia has been a bucket, class actions etc, now they've been done for emissions cheating also. Isuzu D-Max is the champ for longevity .

How is it a bucket? I don't think "class actions, etc" is accurate either. Isn't it about pre 2019 DPFs clogging when they putt around town too long? Was pretty sure the more aggressive recalibration/burn off button put paid to that. Class action is just deciding how much everyone gets refunded.

Very informative thanks Adrian. Oh maar julle toyota manne kan verskonings maak vir die hilux. This is supposed to be industructable according to the toyota fan boys. Not so special as you guys make it out tp be. The ranger on another south african overland has no issues with very similar trips done as Adrian.

I think the only constant in these environments is that maintaining your vehicle is important. I do believe that Ranger you’re talking about needed a new engine recently though 😉

It’s an incredibly reliable vehicle considering what I’ve put it through, this is not a video showing unreliability. It’s a reminder to people to check certain things if they are working their vehicles hard like we do

@@RoamOverlanding Sure there are wear items you replaced, but a lot of what you needed to keep it on the road period wasn’t just wear items and the price reflects that. That E locker is supposed to be designed for off road use and you had to replace it. The factory air box has design flaws and has cost you two turbos already. Turbos are treated like wear items these days and it is rediculous to think about if you compare it to the late and great off-roaders of the past. These are trucks first and foremost and you defend the fact that all of the bushing are worn already because you have a constant load on it when you should be upgrading the bushes at least to poly to compensate for that load and never have that issue again but really the factory setup is insufficient to anyone using the thing like a truck
