This customer called and said he was having multiple electrical problems with his class C motor home. I found bad parts in the AC side of the electrical system and the DC side. I think the biggest problem was overloaded circuits in the RV. Watch to see how it all unfolded.

As a retired FF/ Fire investigator and an avid camper that coach had too many extension cords especially for those heaters. Fire just waiting to happen. Investigated a lot of camper fires in my time and several were because of excessive extension cords and not the correct wire size for the draw of the appliances. Thanks for the video.

Hello Kenny! We, your subscribers watch your videos to watch you figure out how to and fix things! So, never not show video you have taken. As you needed to repeat things in the video because of new subscribers, those same subscribers may need to see what you cut out. As an electrical designer of over 35 years, I cringed when you showed the two heaters (those are called “electrical designers nightmares”) plugged into those very cheap Chineseium fire starter extension cords. The combination of those two is the #1 cause of electrical started fires. What really helps is when a throw rug is put over the cord to keep from tripping over it! The rug really speeds up the process of getting the cord to melt and start the wiener roast. RV’s are like Green Acres where Eva Gabor had the kitchen numbering system where everything was assigned a number. Over a certain number of combined points, the husband had to climb the pole to turn the electric back on. Keep the videos coming! We enjoy them! Kevin

You are right Kevin. I need to stop trying to figure out what y’all want to watch and just show you everything. Ha ha I had forgotten that about green acres. That is funny.

Another story out of my service call history book. Most of my calls a from folks who have there RVs set up as vacation homes. They say it worked when we were here last time. Sometimes it has been a year since they used it. The salt air here adds to the electrical trouble shooting fun. Please keep up the good work, I need it.

We were tandem camping and my friend said his lights were dimming. I went over with my meter was checking the sockets and wasn't getting anything figuring it was the GFCI was kicked. Nope. He forgot to plug the camper into the pedestal.

A different funny story. Was camping with a group and a friends wife hollered out a window that the stove would light. He got to checking and the hot water heater wasn’t on. So he started pulling stuff apart looking for a reason. After a good hour he finally had worked his way back to the LP tanks, they were empty. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Too much draw and cheap extension cords don't help and I'm not a fan of those oil heaters and I think the fake fireplaces are just stupid! Good video.

That failed component is an electrolytic capacitor. That’s typically how they fail, and let out the magic smoke. I would suggest he plug the battery tender directly into the 15A receptacle on the power pedestal outside to avoid tripping the GFCI again. If he keeps using those skinny extension cords, he might want to invest in some fire extinguishers… 😮

That little do-dad is a capacitor. I do HVAC and EC blower motors are getting more frequent. Ive taken a few of the control modules apart and find that is the case, a popped capacitor. I believe ECM stands for Electronically Commutated Motor.

Hello Kenny love the video thanks so much. That thing inside the converter with the hole in it was a capacitor, and judging by the fact it seems to be one of the biggest capacitor in the converter. This indicates that it would be use for filter on the DC output of the converter. It would take a massive pull of current demand to cause this capacitor or associated components with the capacitor area ,to short out and cause this damage to this size of a capacitor. This is my guess after working on power units for over 30 years and seeing many failures .
@hillbillyrv

Your customer sounds like my older brother, absolutely no mechanical knowledge. We had a joke, he would call and ask how to change the oil in his cars. I would tell him to go to the parts store and tell them what information they needed and then go to the liquor store. He would call me when he got home and I would tell him I’ll be over in a little bit and change the oil and drink his beer.

That sounded like the truck’s fan re-learning the stop points. It will cycle from by the feet to the defrost. When the battery has voltage again it re-learns. It happens when I take the a/c module out and put it back in.

The way I saw it was it was because he had AC power coming in, he shouldn’t have put the battery tender on, that’s probably what took out the converter, should’ve had the converter breaker turned off, that’s what I do when I charge my batteries on solar, but I’m still hooked up to shore power,
@hillbillyrv
@hillbillyrv 24 дня назад
The battery tender was on the chassis battery. Not all motor homes are set up to charge the chassis battery off of the converter.
@scotthill1278
@scotthill1278 24 дня назад
Ok so if the convertor is working now, and the starter/house battery gets replaced he shouldn't need a battery maintainer as long as the RV stays plugged in to shore power. An yes I think they have that 15 amp gfci circuit overloaded.
@hillbillyrv
@hillbillyrv 24 дня назад
Not all class C motor homes charge the chassis battery from the converter and I did test it to find out.

Nice job Kenny! I noticed this RV seems to use normal style outlets with a box in the wall. our forest river trailer doesn't have boxes in the wall! I went to replace a 110 light switch and an outlet in ours and found the covers just pop off and there are no boxes in the wall! the outlets use the same style "wing" that grabs the paneling as a box that one would insert in drywall without a stud. I was curious if I should cut the paneling out to allow one of those type boxes to fit and then use a regular outlet and wall switch. BTW the switch is stuck in the on position and have no idea what it's for, assuming it's to turn the outlet on and off next to it that is located over the countertop by the front entry door and kitchen sink.
@hillbillyrv
@hillbillyrv 23 дня назад
Just the GFCI in this RV is residential. All the other outlets are most likely the RV junk ones like is in yours. You can definitely change them to a clamp box and residential style outlets. As far as the switch, I have no idea what that would do.

Did he actually have stuff up and running while gone for 7 months? Looked like everything was disconnected. If so then why would the gfci trip unless it’s bad? And the converter…good catch but it doesn’t have anything to do with the chassis battery. Or is the chassis and house the same in this case (weird)?
@hillbillyrv
@hillbillyrv 24 дня назад
I think they just left it with the GFCI tripped. Chassis and coach battery is two different batteries.

Hey Hillbilly I have a question that has nothing to do with today’s video.I was touching up my caulking on my roof using Dicor and it caused the rubber roof to separate from the roof.What are your thoughts on this?Do I need to use something else?
@hillbillyrv
@hillbillyrv 24 дня назад
If you put a LOT of Dicor on it will kind of bubble the rubber roof, but it will settle back down in a few days.
