In this video, after weeks of lockdown, I head off for a much needed overnight camp. On the windiest day we have had for months, I head off in the canoe with Maggie and find a quiet spot beside the river to set up camp. After setting up my hammock and tarp, I gather firewood and set about making a delicious dinner of Bangers and Mash, washed down with a nice dry cider. A comfortable but windy night is followed by a tasty breakfast before packing up and paddling back home (against a very strong headwind!)

Tupper wear used to sell a small plastic rolling pin that was hollow and sealed at the end, used to take eggs to camp in it then wash it out fill with water and use as a rolling pin.

Prepare for another long commentary from yours truly lol Your canoe is as good a piece of kit as I've seen here in the States, and it's British made to boot! Well done! Maggie is a good girl. I have a cousin who had a Newfie named Brynnya until just recently; kidney failure took her at 8 1/2 years old. She was a love bug and wanted nothing more than to get you to scratch her back and play with her. She was a sweetheart. She was always a little dirty and when you rubbed her, the coating on your fingers required some soap, water, and serious scrubbing later. I will miss her. She was big, but wouldn't hurt a fly. I very much enjoyed your trip. It looked to be idyllic with plenty of wood to be had for a fire. All was at hand to keep you warm and fed. It's good to be alive.

When my 2nd Newfoundland dog reached 8 or so, I expected him to stick around for a couple of years or so, but being a bit of a runt & the right size for a bitch, he lived to be almost 15 years old. Maggs could be him as, they are so alike, so fingers crossed & here's hoping.

I have a simple, good quality hammock. I'm thinking I will add mosquito netting that I attach with Velcro strips. I hadn't thought of attaching it until I watched you modify your hammock. Glad you got out for a nice trip. :o)

Wonderful, but I must say that being outdoors alone is an extremely safe activity, like swimming in a chlorinated pool or ocean as long as safe distance and cleanliness protocol are adhered to. Bicycling, driving, running, hiking, boating, etc.. are totally safe, especially alone or with your partner. I strongly encourage folks to get outside, enjoy the outdoors, but be safe, clean and considerate.

I love the way you always "leave it better than you found it" on your camp sites.I wish more people would and when our 4 legged Friends get older we really appreciate the wonderful times we've had and hope the next day brings more, I was very attached to my 4 Dogs, 2 Goldens, 2 Island Mutts and they are like having a Best Mate.I used to talk to my Pups and they helped to make me feel less lonely.I worked from home for 30 years and my Pups were always with me.It is almost a Godsend to be able to spend all day with your 4 legged Friends.I did animal rescue & had 10 cats at least, any given time.On Sundays I always made a proper brekkie for the pups and it was more satisfying than cooking for my ex! I miss not having a Dog now as we are going to be moving in a few years & with this virus and trying to find a piece of rough land I can't take a Dog in right now but I know when I get to where I'm going, the right Dog will be waiting at a Shelter for us.

What area in Norfolk is this Simon ? I would like to do a trip like this with my boy. On another note : Have you seen the process of how down is produced? Maybe we might all think about the pain and suffering of the birds over the comfort of down. After all it’s the wildlife we like to see and admire out there.

This is on the river Waveney on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. The down in this underquilt is a byproduct of the meat industry - the birds are processed for food, the down goes into nice snuggly warmness. 👍

Another great vid sir. Do you have a link to that potato masher and the canoe, I am half thinking of getting a canoe. How do you find loading it onto your car on your own? Also are you sitting in the boat backwards going stern first, or am i imaging it, is this because your on your own, well only paddler in a 2 person boat?

Thanks Nick. The masher was a gift from a subscriber, so I don’t have a link for it I’m afraid, but I think it’s an avocado masher. The canoe is a Silverbirch Broadland 15, a nice tandem canoe, but just as happy being paddled solo - and yes, normally you’d paddle a tandem canoe backwards so that your weight is more central in the canoe - mine has a kneeling thwart fitted, so I have the option of that too. 👍🛶

It’s a chutney barrel, they are used to import foodstuffs. Mine cost around £15 and it’s pretty robust - pretty sure a bear would have trouble getting into it. 👍

I think it's so crazy experience. I like hammock camping too. I'm now using a hammock from amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B07NLSKSRF that I can set it up on a few seconds. I recommend it if you wanna set up the hammock quickly.

We have lovely remote campsites here in the eastern most reaches of Maine, US. But I sit and watch videos; What’s up with that? Gary, I used to camp out & travel on a Motorcycle in the '80s but I don't feel safe anymore even with my partner.We'd go up to Canada all the time, did a Mass. to Key West trip many times but in those days you felt safe.In the 2006-2010 era we did a lot of camping at Acadia because we had a small property in Harrington which we sold because the 5 hour trip was too much for my spine.I remember when things were so much more pleasant, people had manners & you felt safe.Now, we are hoping to get a caravan & build a tiny home in a remote area, we are now frightened about so much due to the virus,civil unrest & a lack of funding to the NPCA.I wish I could go back in time!

Awesome Video Simon Maggie is absolutely Gorgeous ❤ The reusable tea bag is a great idea. Regarding lockdowns, we have been quite lucky where we are In Australia, as it is a rural area, life almost went on as normal, barring social distancing and ensuring sanitiser is used etc, they couldn't restrict travel from one town to another, as there are rural areas where shopping centres and places for supplies can be 100km+ away in each direction. Unfortunately the panic buying hit us hard, even out as far as we are. It was nearly two months before toilet paper arrived on the shelves again out here. Those of us who always keep a months supply of toilet rolls due to being in cyclone and flood prone areas were fine. Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by the virus and those who are still in lockdown. Victoria here in Australia has been git quite hard by the second spike. If that was us with our labbies when they were still with us, they would have been snoring in the hammock and we would have been sleeping on the ground LOL.

@@simonablokeinthewoods Ein bisschen ja,ein bisschen nein! Wenn viele draußen sein würden, müssen die Leute auch den Müll wieder mitnehmen! Das ist das Problem was mich persönlich sehr stört. Die Leute bringen das mit, trinken und essen das auf ,und viele lassen dann den Müll da ! Was ich nicht verstehe, dann ist das Hauptgericht doch weg. Wenn die Leute ein bisschen Rücksicht nehmen würden, wäre das super. Dem ist leider nicht so! Die Natur ,und die Kinder sind das höchste gut, wir müssen darauf aufpassen! Du machst das genau wie ich, ich drehe mich um, und richte alles wieder richtig her! Macht Spaß das bei dir mit anzuschauen! Deswegen hast du mein Abo sicher. Aber nicht nötig, wie Sie sehen! Ausser dem, wenn Sie das richtige Android Apparatus haben, geht es recht leicht mit ''Copy'' und ''Übersetzen''. You could even do Farsi, if you wanted to. Or Thai. That is something I bet you could not have imagined 10 years ago that would have been possible with a computer. Stellen Sie sich vor, was die Zukunft anzubeten haben könnte. Mind reading.
