College senior here. Surge protectors are a must-have. Trash cans, depends on your university (I had to buy a trashcan for my dorm). Also consider a shower caddy if you use a lot of skincare and haircare products. Also consider a rolling laundry basket instead of a regular one because you're going to hate dragging a full basket to the laundry room. Hope this helps.🙂
The thing is, my autistic ass has a single show that I watch and sometimes I need it to calm down. So I'm going to have to buy a tv, either that a monitor.
We have one common room inside of the building, it is just an empty room with 3 tables and loads of armchairs. You also have to ask the receptionist to unlock it, cause people cannot behave well enough. For that reason I build a 2 monitor PC setup in the dorm every year.
@@pavasko same, we have study rooms with tables and chairs, but nothing like a lounge with tv. And same, you need to ask for the key, and it's generally hard to get it
The TV in my dorm was invaluable, the whiteboard was absolutely useless. A steamer or iron are required, it was impossible to keep my clothes from wrinkling without them. My dorm did not come with a trash can, but did have some extra furniture. Gohar is is great, but you’re better off asking Housing & Residency about this stuff.
@@braygun44 Yeah, I was a PoliSci major so I never really had that necessity. Now that I think about it, it probably would be useful for someone with a different focus.
@@memedealer4208I completely agree with @braygun44 as an AMEP (Applied Mathematics, Engineering, and Physics) + Mathematics double major. I never used it for keeping track of when to do stuff, but the whiteboard, which was 5 x 4 feet, was invaluable for solving my quantitative chem (quantum and thermo) as well as physics (relativity) problem sets. It saved a ton of paper and made seeing whole derivations easier, plus I could make sure I didn't have to write more LaTeX than necessary to show work. The physics exams were open note and do from home to allow for three hours exams, and being able to easily draw out diagrams is amazing!
@@memedealer4208I think it would be useful for world language majors, English majors, math, and physics majors. As a Pre med major I really don't think it's worth it
Honestly from personal experience it’s way better to have separate trash cans if you have other roommates. Eliminates any conflict about who’s responsible for taking it out
Please. If anyone listens to any of the advice in the comments, listen to this guy. It saved my college and now as an adult I don’t go to hotels or stay as a guest at anyone’s house without one.
They’re not for everyone, but I found them super helpful when wanting to plan my days out, also great for reminders. I didn’t like using my phone for either of those things so the whiteboard worked best for me
Five best items from a recent grad 5: quality shower caddy 4: surge protector 3: universal wall plug (think anker) 2: a ten foot phone cable (the beds are tall) 1: a small tray kr bag that hangs on the edge of your bed for your phone glasses and water bottle (you dont always have a nights stand)
Student here. That really depends on a dorm. The one I was in (South Korea) had only furniture and a mattress, that's it. No trash can, so you either buy it or go with bags, also don't have a curtain, heck, or even a pillow. Probably the best thing you can do is when you are moving in the dorm, book a hotel for a night, visit the dorm, think of what you need there right now, come back to the hotel, stay the night while also planning/ordering these stuff and then next day go get them, unpack and done.
Good idea with the hotel, I was lucky to go to a uni in the same city I lived in so I just made multiple trips home to grab stuff I realized I needed, but for those who go to school far from where they live a hotel is a great suggestion
Military personnel here: We pretty much live in dorms and I must say if you want your uniforms/clothes to look nice a steamer works wonders vs an ironing board. It’s easier and faster.
do you ever iron your collar and lapels? im genuinely curious on how you can have a representable uniform with out ironing lapels, i understand the rest cause even for me if i hang my uniform fresh out of the dryer i only have to iron collar and lapels saving a crap load of tim.
@@na78981 imma be living alone and I got a nice 18 inch mini-led display laptop so I'm good on the TV part. It should be big enough to entertain me. If I do feel like I need one tho, I'll probably save up some cash in a month working part time and then buy something good around the 500~600 range, like the hisense U7K or U7N (if on discount)
@@ethanchen4504 if both my living room and bedroom has one then I probably don't, but if it's too smol or if there's only 1 of em, then yea I can buy a decent one from somewhere.
invest in a projector. It isn't as nice as having a television, but in dorms with already limited space, you can store them when not in use. Just use a white poster board as the backdrop.
@@fox.9879 Nah, TV is more pratical for crowds. If you want to play group games which in my opinion is the best icebreaker in college best go with the TV. laptop should be a given for class and a projector isnt bad but I think a TV just gives a homey energy. My entire first two years wouldve been different without a TV i cant stress how important it is if you have a lot of friends who are into games and get competitive.
Steamers are nice too because you can safely use them on really delicate fabrics. They are also nice for stuff that would be difficult to iron like sheets and curtain (it’s not important, but curtains usually come folded up so they have big wrinkles)
From a senior: Required: Mechanical pencils and pens Highlighters Notebooks Folders Chargers or battery Silent click mouse Earbuds / airpods Ti-84 plus CE (or CX-II CAS) Post it notes (for doodles / notes) Stick Deodorant (just trust) Sharpie (comes in clutch) Solid backpack Optional: Little math toolkit Colored pencils Stapler Scissors Markers Dry Erase markers + board Planner I did college and high-school together, so I kept a few extra items with me that helped at the college, like a small dry erase board for notes, a sketchbook for planning, and a toolkit for repairs / pentesting. But generally, less is more. Don't be the kid that shows up with a billion things they are going to loose. Stay organized and get a system down. Enjoy HS bro !!!
My experience with bringing items to college is that every single person will tell you something different, just wait until you get to dorms to do most of your shopping
a lot of dorm buildings will have vacuums (try to contact your RA or other res life people, or even your roommate on what they're bringing [if you have one]) but if you are a messy person or live in a place where bugs are common/eat in your room often, you can get ones for pretty cheap. most dorms will already have closets to some degree, ive never needed a hanging door hook at all, ive just used the closet rack or hooks already in the closet depends on the way the room is set up because some will have things like cork boards already, but in general: do not bring things like LED light strips because they strip the paint off the wall and the fees for that are expensive. if you want cool lighting you can get something that displays galaxy type images onto your ceiling/wall. you can also bring artwork, posters, etc if there are corkboards or you can tape them up if you're careful. just bring things that interest you and that wont mess with the building, try to leave the room the exact same as when you moved in to avoid cleaning fees or damage charges.
My university has rules against using command hooks but people use them anyways😂 extra furniture like ottomans also isn't allowed but it's provided with the room. For extra clothes storage, use one of those rolling carts, they're cheap but efficient.
Some dorm buildings (like mine) will ban command hooks and tell you to use push pins. Also not all dorm rooms come with trash bins (I had to buy a small one). I also found dust accumulated so fast and I was vacuuming it like once a week (likely because none of the windows in the building opened). I bought door hooks to hang wet towels and to keep my bag of plastic bags on. Storage ottomans are pretty good if you have things you're not supposed to bc your RA is not allowed to go into it during a normal room check. Also it might be nice to have another place to sit/prop your feet up.
@@williswonky Thanks! I was thinking of carefully taping things up, and for lighting I was thinking about fairy lights instead of the strip lights that attach directly to the wall. I appreciate the advice! :D
Lived in the student apartments. All his "advices" wasn't helpful at all. Like actually. I was a computer science student. Why do i need scissors and stapler, why do i need a whiteboard? But i need a TV/monitor to work more efficient. Why do i need a power bank? Will it power my laptop?
@@hopelesssoul9363I'm a computer science student also but I don't see your point, these are general advice to take with a grain of salt and you don't need to follow all of it as it depends on individual Scissors is a basic item all households should have, doesn't have to be used for the degree Whiteboard is still useful for CS students? You're not coding infront a laptop all the time. It would be useful for math/theory based courses or even just a guide for your day/tasks even if that's negated by a ipad it's still helpful if you do study sessions with friends at a your dorm but again, individual based. A TV ≠ a monitor and irt price to performance and suitable size for entertainment needs in a dorm, is useless over one Yes a PowerBank can charge your laptop if it has USBC charging and is VERY useful if you're always on the move and if power goes out which is unlikely but chances aren't 0
@@hopelesssoul9363a power bank is really useful, in my room I only had 2 outlets and I had a lamp, phone plug in, computer charger, Xbox and TV and soo much more, I really wish I had a power bank cause I had to unplug things everyday to use one thing and it sucked
@@hopelesssoul9363 Just my opinion here. Power bank is helpful if you are a clumsy, unorganized minded person who often forgets (or procrastinate if you are lazy) to charge your phone/device(s) or take "unplanned trips" often or just use your phone/device(s) a lot.
Glad you didn’t just get rid of the capability to de-wrinkled clothing! I have an iron steamer combo sort of thing and an ironing board. I see irons or steamers being marked as not needed at all but sometimes you need to iron some clothing for an interview, career fair, performance, important presentation, etc.
When I was a freshman and sophomore, watching TV in the dorm was essential. Gathered with all my friends and playing sports games or mortal combat is how we became close, and it is a tradition we play together every time we meet up, even if we all go our separate ways. If you can find a place for it, you 100 percent need it. Multi-player games with friends in your private space are game changers. You would be surprised how close people can get when all gathered around the game cohesively.
“Then you buy a power bank so you have enough energy to follow Gohar” If I was responsible enough to charge my phone in the first place I wouldn't ever need a power bank
My dorm didn't have a trashcan , it had a big one in the corridor. So I bought one for the room and just emptied it out weekly. My roommates were grateful.
i will respectfully take back that ironing board, because resetting knife pleats in vintage wool skirts becomes incredibly difficult if you don’t have one.
surge protect only work if your outlets are grounded. And most if not all of surge protectors doesn't actually protect you from surges. Atleast not the cheap ones.
the surge protectors with the usb spots directly (instead of only wall outlet spots) are a life saver. i bought the same brand till i couldnt find it on amazon anymore. got a big one that can fit like 10 or more outlets if need be.
Rising college junior here! The surge protector and mini stapler are absolute musts. The trash can depends on if your school supplies one or not. If you have a lot of bathroom supplies, a shower caddy is good to have. I also have a portable mini fan cause my school's AC is trash. And a small ottoman to help me step into my bed cause it's raised, plus it's good for storing things like towels or sheets. Get an egg crate for your bed too, dorm room beds have no support lol
Another thing I can think of is getting a tour of the dorm room before going to get stuff for it so you know what you already have and what you don’t have and can buy
Music student here with ADHD. A TV is a must have, but not as a TV. Using it as a second screen for classes that need two screens and/or a background video.
Here’s some things I’d recommend getting: desk lamp, shoe rack (if u have more than one pair of shoes), water filter which you can keep in your mini fridge, headphones/ear plugs and an eye mask for if your roommate is working while you’re trying to sleep. (Also, absolutely bring a tv, you’ll regret not having it)
A tv is infinitely nicer to have than a whiteboard. Thankfully i graduated last may but there was no way I was going to the lobby area every time I wanted to watch or play something. Especially considering only the first floor had a communal area.
A small foldable cart for groceries, the ones provided by the dorm are always missing. Especially if your parking lot is a long way away from your dorm.
