Overseeding my bermuda lawn with annual ryegrass for the winter. This will maintain a green turf while bermuda lawn around you will go dormant. Ryegrass germinates very fast and will have results in as little as 10 days.

This guy knows his stuff about grass. This is the most informative instructional video regarding Ryegrass that I have ever seen. There is a lot more to know about grass varieties and maintaining a very green, presentable, and appealing yard full of grass. I am striving to have a yard like the man that owns this channel.

I seen you mentioned in an earlier comment that you’re going to scalp the rye and chemically kill it before the Bermuda grass starts growing again. My question to you is, does that mean that you are going to have to reseed with rye again the following winter, or since you’ve applied it, will the roots still be there and just grow on its own once the Bermuda goes dormant?
@TheALG
@TheALG Год назад
I will have to reseed again the following winter. Doing this is more of a once and done. There are no roots that will come back. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Rob great content just one thing. That metal plate on your front grass lawn, looks an eyesore I don't know if you've already thought about this, and if you can. A tip and trick have you tried making a square removable tray filled with soil and grass to cover the metal plate and blend in.
@TheALG

Thanks for the tip. I have tried making something like this a few years back. It did not last long because the grass would die after about 1 week. My guess the metal plate got hot and burned the grass on top.

I can look for a patch of fake grass but I hope I can find dark green instead of light green. I dont want to paint it because the grass goes dormant in the winter and will look awkward with brown bermuda and a small green patch. I will for sure look into the synthetic grass. Thanks for the tip.

So, when you say if you used a pre emergent, do you mean, anytime during the warm season, or do you mean, prior to scalping and planting the rye grass?
@TheALG
@TheALG 5 месяцев назад
Depends on the brand and coverage. For example, using a lesco 007 covers you for about 3 months vs using prodiamine 65 wdg at the 6 month rate. If you plan to do winter overseed, you can use a preemergent early during the growing season provided you don't apply late in the season closer to the time you want to lay seed.
@Bigtymer1
@Bigtymer1 5 месяцев назад
@@TheALG thanks! Very helpful, I thought you put the pre emergent down prior to over-seeding for rye grass. So after over seeding, when should the pre emergent be applied?

I'm new to this, what's thr point of seeding Ryegrass into your Bermuda?
@TheALG
@TheALG 2 года назад
Ah, its a practice some people who have bermuda grass. Bermuda goes green when its warm and goes brown when its cold. Some people don't like the look of a brown lawn, so they overseed it with a cool season ryegrass to have the green look in the winter. Bermuda is so aggressive with its growth come spring, it can recover very quickly.

Currently I have bermuda with a little of st augustine mix. I do have some bare spots. Here in Texas the summer can be in the three digits. If I throw down ryegrass will it grow now and mix with the bermuda and eventually when the rye dies in the summer heat will it leave dead areas or will bermuda fill in?
@TheALG
@TheALG 5 месяцев назад
I could go both ways, it is likely that the rye will die and you will probably still be left with a bare spot. I would focus on getting the bermuda to fill in when it consistently stays warm. The bermuda will start to fill in buy not fully because the rye is taking up the space. Hope this makes sense.
@arielrodriguez6980
@arielrodriguez6980 5 месяцев назад
@@TheALG My best bet is to let bermuda fill in like you say but can I seed with rye in the fall so it can be green and hopefully when bermuda comes out of dormancy and the rye dies I will have green grass year round, yes?
@TheALG
@TheALG 5 месяцев назад
Yes and no. While the rye will die, it doesn't die right away. It will take a few days of consistent heat to kill it off. There will be a transition period where the bermuda will start to grow, and the rye will still linger.
@arielrodriguez6980
@arielrodriguez6980 5 месяцев назад
@@TheALG correct but as the bermuda starts to grow and extend it should fill in the dormant/dead rye until I re seed in the fall?
@TheALG
@TheALG 5 месяцев назад
It will spread as the rye dies. Sometimes, the rye can stay alive longer than anticipated, just depends on how much shade there is and if you have lots of rain

I skipped preemergent altogether. Overseeding with rye on bermuda should only be done if you have a healthy turf and very little weed pressure.

@@TheALG I been in this house for 9 years now. Put rye down every year. What I never knew about was pre emergent for the weeds. I always just put down Scotts weed n feed. If I put a pre emergent like Lesco after the rye has come up will the p/e kill the rye?
@TheALG
@TheALG Год назад
Weed and feed is fine after the rye is established. The preemergent you have to wait at least about 8 weeks. I can be off by a week or two. The main goal is to allow the rye to establish first then you can out down a preemergent.
