Can you/Should you overseed centipede grass with Annual Rye in the Fall? It’s possible but we will see this year if this causes any negative effects with the centipede’s health.

I haven’t seen a follow up video but I just want to share we overseeded our centipede lawn with rye this past fall. Worse mistake we’ve ever made. We thought it would help with erosion and washing but instead caused fungus and rot in our centipede.

Wow, the only difference I’ve noticed is a few more weeds. Are you sure it’s fungus and not the fact that it hasn’t fully come out of dormancy?

I had a lawn care company overseed my centipede last fall, but it was because they went to the wrong house. My neighbor wanted winter rye. I thought it would be ok, because I had just put out atrazine the week or two prior. This spring I had terrible weeds, worse than I've ever had, even with spring treatment. I guess it was maybe the rye coming up. But what's worse in very large areas where my centipede was detached from the soil. Very similar to when I was using prodiamine, which I stopped two years ago. I have high suspicion that the rye lead to this. I'm really thinking about calling the owner of that company and telling them they need to cough up a cunck of change, if it'll even help anything.

Yeah if it was annual rye a lot of blends have awful weed seeds in them. I overseeded my front zoysia lawn one year with Pennington annual rye and it had poa annua and goose grass weed seeds in it! The seed I used for this vid is weed free so I haven’t noticed any outbreaks at all yet.

@@CentipedeCentralLawnCareI'm in eastern NC, we've had some very hot days in the last week and a half. Whatever was coming up is not nearly as bad now, so I think the heat got to it....now I have to deal with all the bare spots. Hopefully these weeds, or rye, or whatever it was is really on the outs. I didn't aerate last year, but I won't miss it this year. I hope that helps with growth. Maybe I'll talk to my fertilizer guy and see if there's a blend he can use to help. I'm interested in looking into the fertilizer you used with humid acid. I saw you did a video on it.

Overseeding centipede grass with rye isn't the best thing to do for one reason. Centipede has a shallow root system compared to other types of grass right. We all know that winter is harsh on centipede lawns and it's usually when die off occurs due to the cold getting to the root system. The roots of the rye compete with the centipede and you run the chance of even more centipede decline. But if you're going to do it, I don't recommend getting rye from the big box stores. Find a clean perennial rye online because you don't want that annual rye grass that finds its way into the cheap stuff.

What benefits are there of overseeding with Rye grass? I’m wondering if it helps stop weeds that germinate in the fall/winter. Naturally.

The main benefits are erosion control and green in the fall/winter months. That’s an interesting point about the weeds but not sure. You do need to make sure if you overseed with rye it is weed free. Some products have weed seeds like goose grass and poa annua.

@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare I don’t think it would be worth the year round mowing lol. But it would be interesting to know if having a natural turf year round would block out weeds. Off topic but just wanted to say your channel is much appreciated. I look forward to your videos. I’m in Middle GA with centipede grass.

@@hatchsihatch Savannah, GA area here. Centipede grass in every yard. It might as well be year round.. winter isn't very long. And for me, if I take a break mowing, I won't be in the groove of mowing when the grass starts growing again.

Sir, trying to win the Yard of the Fall trophy out here. The BLUF, currently I have centepide in Columbia, SC. I was planning to overseed with Raygrass but I read that Centepide with Raygrass will create a lot of problems. Another article advises oversees with Fescue for the fall/winter to keep the green lawn going thru the season. Do you have any advice/recommendations?

I chose annual rye because it burns off easily in the hotter months when the centipede needs to take off and grow. I think fescue would take longer to burn off and may cause more problems… I have not seen any damage whatsoever to the overseed I did. No fungus, no weak growth, no dryness or heavy wetness. You could try it and if you have issues next spring you would know probably not to do it again. Up to you.

I overseeded our yard last Nov with winter rye and now I’m afraid that I ruined our centipede yard. We are also in south alabama. Any tips on getting our yard back? I’m so upset about this. I just came across your videos so I have hope lol!! We did do an application of msm turf about 7 weeks ago. What do I need to do next to get my lush centipede back?

The hot weather will burn off the annual rye weeds that you are most likely seeing and the centipede will eventually take over. By June it will probably be looking much better naturally

Parts of it come out on the edges of the lawn. I just make sure I bag mow to prevent spreading of the weed seeds

I’ve heard Tifblair Centipede Seed is very good and I may try some in some areas this year. But as far as the ryes, fescues, Kentucky bluegrass etc, they will all burn off in the summer here in AL.

I planted what I found from Gulf kist centipede seed and I was amazed how fast it germinated, like 3 days I saw it starting when I've always heard it takes much longer than that. I planted it with black kow manure I found at lowes, mixed with sand and that may have helped it grow fast. MUST keep it wet or it will die.
