Hey everyone, since this video has been out for awhile and has the most views of any of my others by a mile I’d like to address the inclusion of the creator Peter Coffin. I do not endorse the decisions and ideas that Peter Coffin has espoused. I understand that other creators have had trouble with them and their most recent defenses of harmful ideas and figures is disappointing to say the least. Their work was helpful to me when learning about various leftist ideas but I do not want my work to send people towards them.

Calvin's dad is literally my dad, glasses, it builds character, loving the outdoors and waking up early. Also he told me story when I was young and songs, like "the itsy bitsy spider went crawling up your back, sunk in its fangs and had a little snack, when it was done you collapse upon the floor and the itsy, bitsy, spider, went crawling back for more" that was my childhiod

Theory; Hobbes always seems to have great time when he's with Susie and generally has no problem hanging out with her. Hobbes is a product of Calvin's imagination. A manifestation of his subconscious, if you will. (Whether or not that makes him real or not is unrelated, to me at least.) Some part of Calvin desperately wants to be Susie's friend. All his pranks are subliminal attempts to get her attention, by a boy who doesn't know how to actually make friends. His constant failure to befriend her fuels his dislike of her and other girls. G.R.O.S.S. is his method of protecting his ego.

I study visual communication, one could say that im the enemy for making advertisements and making products more appealing for people and i just cant deny it. We learn that a brand is just 10% different and 90% similar to others, consumers buy brands, not products. I truly believe there is another way of thinking and producing and consuming, pieces of media like this keeps your feet on the ground. Loved the video!!

I first came across Calvin and Hobbes in The Stars and Stipes newspaper while stationed in Korea (mid 80's). Really helped get me through that year away. Loved the innocence and imagination of that kid, and the companionship of the two. Favorite strip was the one about the wonder and fascination with the toaster - making toast! Found the complete collection in three bound books at Costco many years ago; now a prized possession 🤓. Thanks for this video, really enjoyed it and appreciate all the effort you put into it!!

This was a wonderful essay! The editing, the music, and the humor all work together to support the powerful argument underneath. I loved Calvin and Hobbes as a kid even though I missed such a large majority of the jokes I'm sure. But maybe it taught me some important lessons I didn't even realize. And in the end, the scenes I remember the most were the ones of the two of them going on their simple, pretty adventures so I think I did get it after all. Instant sub, hope to catch up on everything else youve made soon :)

I love that Calvin and Hobbes exists within its own ecosystem, Bill never allowed his work to be taken away by anyone else and putting their spin on it like they have done with Garfield. This makes it purely timeless, something you can revisit at any time and recontextualise how you see it as an adult compared to how you saw it as a child.

As someone who grew up in a very masculine world, every family member having been in the military, growing up in the american south, and so on, it only now occurs to me how much masculinity was baked into my very being. The more I think about it, the more I realize that if I hadn't ever been exposed to the concept that masculinity is not in and of itself an inherent quality of myself because of my genitals, I would never have discovered the world of euphoria and fulfillment I have now. My parents bought me toys and games, and paid for interests that were perceived as unabashedly masculine, and really still are today in a lot of ways. This idea of having my gender 'bought' for me as a child... it really warps the way you think of yourself. I thought of myself as a 'boy/ man' only because I was never presented the option of an alternative. In a sense, I was handed a sunk-cost way of thinking. "mother and father have paid a lot for me to be a boy, so I should be good and be that way, even if I don't really feel like that's true or accurate in any way." The commodification of our identities and the linking of gender norms within these things makes a strange and uncomfortable mask to have to wear as an enby who isn't really fully out. I appreciate your making me think about that more, and maybe I should re-read Calvin and Hobbes, lol. Thanks!

I don't think the anti-consumerism message within Calvin and Hobbes was intended to be the main point, though it was certainly on Watterson's mind as he struggled constantly against companies trying to monetize his work through cheap merchandise. I think it comes across more strongly now because it's such a sever problem in the present day.
@RomanBearProductions

Like I mention in the beginning, there are a ton of different lenses through which to analyze Calvin and Hobbes. This was just the one I wanted to focus on because I think the comics had a lot to say on matter. Like all art, there is no objective way to understand it and I don’t want to give the impression that I’m telling people “this is what this is about. It’s the main thing to focus on” but I agree that certain topics come into sharper focus during certain periods of time.

Hello God, it's me, RomanBear. So I took this free overlay: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hX_rhsbFET4.html and brought it into after effects where I slowed it down, looped the footage (you right click on the footage, hit interpret, and change the number of loop times in the menu) and inverted the channels so I ended up with black specks on a white background. After that, I created a new solid for the background which I made the yellow color, and put that underneath the overlay layer. The last step is to change the overlay layer's blending mode to darken. Hope that has pleased you, lord. It feels somewhat blasphemes to be instructing God. Do not smite, please.

Maybe when this comic on insurance was originally written it didn’t mean the insurance company would “hit you with a slingshot.” However if you fast forward to present day, it’s not so far from the truth. Insurance companies have now stuck their greedy little hands into the decisions that physicians make for their patients. Saying what medications are covered and which ones are not, what procedures they will cover and what they will not. Leaving doctors trying to help the insurance companies not the patients (and did you know that all humans are cut from the same cookie cutter), so patients have now lost the connection with their physician. We’re all the same in the insurance games’ eyes. No more being treated like an individual. I could go on, but I’ll shut up now. Calvin and Hobbes was way ahead of its time. I wish Mr. Watterson would get back to the drawing board. There is so much more evil now to expand on … and I so much love Calvin and Hobbes.

The only part I disagree with is the propeller beanie example. Calvin wants the propeller beanie because he actually believes it will give him the ability to fly. We see him imagining his travels through the sky with said beanie. Calvin frequently dreams of leaving his home & family and escaping the numerous irritants of his life, and his obsession with the beanie is based on that; the beanie is the first thing he's encountered that promises that escape. But he has no grasp of aeronautics and we can see from his fantasies every reason why his dream will fail before the beanie even arrives. Consumer identity has little to do with this example. It's pure desperation-based escape fantasy.

Fun fact about those: nobody knows who started them. Bill Watterson has acknowledged their existence as something he doesn’t care much for but they continue to be sold and redistributed today. I personally don’t like them but they are a product of people and not business which is why, although illegal, they have never been stopped.

It may be of interest to you to know that they are based on philosophers John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes.

One problem I have with your reasoning is that brands AREN'T fully in control of their image. People ascribe their own meaning to products/brands, which may be radically different from the age/meaning marketing may strive to present. Yes, are purchases reflect who we are/want to be, but we determine the meaning of that purchase, which may be radically different, even in opposition to, the image and ideas producer's/marketing may want.

My critique is not about the process by which people ascribe meaning onto the products themselves, this is fairly common behavior. Our buying habits, even without the influence of the seller, can be just as much about the identity we want to project as the utility of the material item. It’s an important part of the human experience. The real critique comes from the way in which this behavior is co-opted and morphed within a capitalist framework. In a system that demands endless growth, these behaviors are weaponized for the purpose of expanding markets or creating an even more insatiable consumer base. Of course people can ascribe their own meaning (it doesn’t matter to the company so long as they are profiting) but consumption doesn’t happen in a vacuum and the ramifications for this weaponized conflation of identity and consumption can and are frequently harmful to culture, the quality of goods and services, and the physical environment itself. I appreciate the constructive criticism though! Thank you

Nationalism is not synonymous with consumer identity. Both can be manipulated by people with nefarious intentions, but they are not the same.

As a man that didn't do sports until 18, when I found climbing, I wish someone would've pushed me to do more exercise before that. Because life will demand a certain level of competition (if anything, with yourself), and you don't learn discipline and effort by playing by yourself all day. There's a reason sports are an ancient thing: it's a controlled competition, in order to prepare a man for the actual competition of life. (Most jobs require teamplaying, btw...). It's a much lesser evil to force sports on a kid (reasonably, obviously), than it is to allow him to be sedentary. The problem is, taking the kid to sports requires time and gas, and having him in his room with a console doesn't. And in nowaday's families where both parents work full time, well... guess which one is the more common. Also, it's never been true that women have to be 20 pounds underweight as Susie claims. If anything, that's imposed by other women, just like the importance they put on accesories and clothes. Men are perfectly fine (the vast majority prefers it) with a woman that is in her optimal weight. Sure, ads and films portray the ideal body, but that's as true for women as it is for men. Susie doesn't really have a point there (16:34). There's other things she could've counter with, but not that.

Calvin's Identity is wrapped around his Religious convictions and ANY threat to a Religion meets Resistance, Hobbs is of the Material and sees the world as Completely determined By ones Own Will. That is contrary to Calvin's Fatalist ideals and predetermined outcomes of life and Gods Will.. From there you get a duality that can access and explore EVERY facet of Political and Religious Life. . IE they are based on John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes.

Fantastic video. Though the “toxic masculinity” section was lame. The masculine traits you cited were (and this might come as a shock, so you might want to sit down) perfectly appropriate and proper. Being “daring and courageous” is somehow bad?! Being the breadwinner in a family is somehow bad? Too many boys nowadays are being raised to be weak, scared, and flimsy. Calvin not wanting to be a “sissy” is a GOOD thing. But again, apart from that section, this video is fantastic.

And all of this is why one day I thought to myself: when I adopt a dog, I'm gonna name him Calvin. Later that same day I helped a stray dog who followed me and I ended up taking him home. I was going to try to find him a family, but I had already chosen a name for him that morning and everything, so he stayed! Been with me for 10 years and he still acts like you'd expect a Calvin to act. :)

I was about to start taking this video with a grain of salt when you started to go into the ‘gender identity’ stuff, but then I watched the rest and realized you weren’t pushing some sort of ideology, just analyzing the work as you saw it. Good job on staying objective, even better job on editing, and fantastic job on the video. Edit: Syntax
