Newborn babies can get overtired very easily but parents often don’t recognize the signs and think they are hungry.
We Help Parents Get More Sleep With Less Effort.

Sleep Summary by Age: www.helpingbabiessleepandpare...
Why Does it Happen?
Babies get overtired very easily. 15 minutes for a newborn can be the timing that can set you up for success or derail your entire evening.
Most newborns 0-3 months can’t comfortably stay awake more than 1-1.5 hours. In the first month, most kids wake up, eat, burp, and are ready to be asleep within 45 minutes of waking.
When we surpass these “awake times” it becomes harder for a little person to fall asleep, and then stay asleep.

My 7 week old baby stays awake for 5 hours and then naps for 3 or 4! It wasn't until today that I realized it shouldn't be this way :(

We've got a little 8 month old foster kiddo who goes to visitation with his parents twice a week, six hours at a time. He often stays awake the entire visit, and it's very difficult for him to fall asleep when he gets home. I'm going to give the baths a go. Thank you so much for putting this information out here for free, you're an angel.

My baby is colic ( mild one) doesn’t spit or anything. She sleeps all night like 9.30pm-7am n Morning bathe , sleeps till 2pm with feedings in between of course. Later she doesn’t sleep at all. Why won’t she settle after 2pm ? Is it because she had her quota of sleep for the day? How can I improve this?
@HelpingBabiesSleep
@HelpingBabiesSleep 3 года назад
Very hard to say with limited information and not knowing your full history. But if she's up at 7 am and is less than 3 months, she's likely awake about 1 hour between naps.

My baby is 1 week old today and I think this is the first time I've come across being overtired. She has been alert after I feed her, then she eventually falls asleep, only to wake up crying 15min because she has to poop. Then I change her and get her comfortable and I calm her down and she is wide awake and wanting to eat again. I have no idea how the cycle started. Maybe just with bad gas?
@HelpingBabiesSleep
@HelpingBabiesSleep 3 года назад
Very hard to say with limited information, but I would question if she's truly hungry just an hour after feeding? Is that masking an underlying issue such as needing to burp? Hard to say for sure. IN my newborn class we go over how to be a good newborn detective to meet the root need and get out of cycles like this. You can check it out here www.helpingbabiessleepschool.com

How do you get an overtired newborn back on track.... we still have to wake him to feed every 2-3hrs.... tempted to let him sleep longer to catch up on sleep
@HelpingBabiesSleep
@HelpingBabiesSleep 3 года назад
It's strange to me that you have to wake him every 2-3 hours to feed if he's gaining weight well. Usually coming home from the hospital those first 2 weeks it's every 3 hours until they get back to birth weight. If weight and milk supply are fine i'd let him sleep.
@alohadakine4571
@alohadakine4571 3 года назад
@@HelpingBabiesSleep We just made 3 weeks, about 6 ounces below birth weight now. So maybe that’s why we were instructed to feed every 2-3hr? Baby was sleeping decently even w/ waking to feed, but in the past 3 days noticed he’d started staying up too long. Could waking to feed be interrupting his sleep and causing him to stay up? I’m tempted to let him sleep longer, especially the night time windows

@@HelpingBabiesSleep I super appreciate your responses! First time parent (I’m sure you can tell lol). I’ll ask doc tomorrow. It was probably my fault for playing/engaging him while he was up. @@HelpingBabiesSleep sleep has improved. Baby been gaining weight steadily now so I let him sleep as long as he wants, but I wake him to feed at 3.5hrs during the day. I think another problem was I wasn’t feeding him enough and that’s why he wasn’t sleeping/napping well. It’s wild how fast their appetite grows, it literally jumps over night.
@11rochs

So you say it should be about and hour and half by three months. Sooo that’s u tho when? Three months until six months they should be napping every hour and a half or?

@HelpingBabiesSleep
@HelpingBabiesSleep 3 года назад
I'm so sorry you're in that space!! It's really hard once they are exhausted. Pillar #1 in my Helping Babies Sleep Method is to get them down within 1-1.5 hours to avoid that overtired space where it seems like nothing works. You might have to nurse to sleep or go for a car ride to get the motion to help you. I teach more sleep detective skills and how to avoid this position in www.helpingbabiessleepschool! I don’t know how to get him back on a schedule. He was overtired 3 days ago and has not been able to sleep since so he is in a chronic state of overtired and won’t nap or sleep. I know if he slept I could get him back into it but I don’t know how to do that when he won’t sleep. It’s been 3 days and he has slept 8 hours total, he is 6 weeks. Non of the tips work, he just screams for hours, will sleep 10min than scream for hours

He must be uncomfortable. This isn't about sleep as much as its about figuring out what's bugging him. - digestion? reflux? Food sensitivity?

In The Helping Babies Sleep Method, we prioritize getting regular feeds in during the daytime. So we would wake up if it's been more than 4 hours since the last feed. You can grab the guide here: www.amzn.com/B08WQ2J8MZ

Feeding baby kind of calms my baby down n put to sleep but then i hv to burp him which will wake him up again...sometimes i become selfish n let him sleep without burping 😢🙈

Try feeding on wake up rather than on put down. Easier to burp!

Are there times when you can't prevent a baby from being overtired? Like sleeping so much in a day, Or does getting him back to sleep an hour after waking up keep them from being overtired always work? I'm struggling with this 😩
@HelpingBabiesSleep
@HelpingBabiesSleep 2 года назад
Generally it's pretty hard for a newborn to sleep too much in the day. Most people keep kiddos up too long. Getting him back to sleep ~ 1 hr helps prevent from being overtired. That's 1.5 hours around 3 mo.

@@HelpingBabiesSleep But what if a baby will not go down to sleep within that 1.5hour window? I am aware of the sleep cycles and try implementing it but sometimes my new born (usually once a day) refuses to go back asleep, even though he's fed, winded and changed. He of course then gets overtired and the cycle continues. I've not found a solution online :(
@HelpingBabiesSleep
@HelpingBabiesSleep 2 года назад
@@mrandrewlynch In an usual case your child could be an outliner and need more time. A more common scenario is that something's distracting your son - discomfort, visual distractions and prevent him from relaxing.

Tdlr for anyone watching this 1. Breastfeed extra to get them to sleep 2. Swaddle 3. White noise 4. Don't let them get overtired, stupid Not really a helpful or realistic video if you have a newborn with reflux and you have to wait 30 minutes before laying the little one flat. Was hoping there would be something unique to the video aside from the repeated stuff.
