It's a shame they haven't updated the textures on the original models to be on par with the new ones. Because TBH, some of the original models were much more interesting looking. But their details suffer now.
Excellent work as always Nick . Personally i think the use of the term " 2 " is a vast overstatement as this is really just a update on Activisions part ...
Im pretty sure they decided the changes were too big for a 6 year old game to be just an update. I mean, announcing a sequel is gonna generate more hype that an update for a game from 2016. Look at ghost recon breakpoint. They did a massive update, fixing virtually every issue people had with it. But since it took a year to do the update nobody noticed or cared that they actually put in the effort to fix their game. With a sequel you can rebalance all the characters and such. I honestly dont understand why people get so hung up over naming. Its free anyways, you people act like you've been robbed
@@spacedout4061 Haha yeah I remember when fighting game devs would drop a balance update and call it a new game, that would be $40-60 dollars in an already niche genre. I think if OW2 dropped with PVE already in the game there wouldn’t be such pushback
@@Judgementkiryu yeah. Ppl are obsessed with naming. Far cry new dawn is a good example. People complained that it was called a new game because to them it seemed like a dlc. It was 40 bucks and had a full length story with a bunch of side content too
@@spacedout4061 I'm just pointing out that its not really a sequel , that's all . As far as Ghost recon is concerned UBI soft know how to kill their games from day one guaranteed . Cant really blame the public reception for that one.
They'd have to rework them into different kinds of maps since they're scrapping 2 capture points if nothing else they can at least keep them as is for death match but I'd want them in the main pool so it feels like they'd need to make them larger and turn them into payload maps.
Forcing teams down to 1 tank and removing the assault gamemode really doesnt sit right with me. In the original you had the ability to play heros off of each other to create interresting strategies and now every round just becomes a slugfest. The teams individual health pool has also shrunk due to this and just makes you die quicker. As you said teamwipes are far more common now and i dont think thats a good thing.
Fantastic video. It would’ve been cool to see you comparing the progression system (or lack of in OW2’s case). 32 weeks to earn a single legendary skin..
This just means it was another feature not ready yet and is still a work in progress. They pushed this steaming pile out the door before it was even half done.
8:15 My thoughts exactly. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say EVERY map is worse because of the different time of day. Even a map like Ilios in OW2 feels very lonely compared to OW1
The only map I feel they improved on was Gibraltar. The colors of the map really pop now compared to the original. Other than that, it looks like they just used a time-of-day slider on a few maps for the sake of it
I think lijiang tower feels comfy and the new route 66 at night is nicer on the eyes, the old variations are gonna comeback so we will have multiple of them, don't worry.
Well, they had to take a break every 30 minutes for a 3-hour of 'groping and harassing the female employees break time'. It's hard job, if you know what I mean.
I know its the smaller part of the players but overwatch 1 looks really bad in consoles, any console, overwatch 2 looks fucking amazing for us, poor souls console people, first game literally doesent have texture in 50% of everything on consoles, and now looks very very nice
They only started working on PvP around 1 - 1 1/2 years ago. They were focused on PvE from 2019 - early 2021 before focusing on PvP. I'm hoping, PvE releases by the end of the year.
I don't have a source right now, but I remember the OW devs saying that they will allow certain maps (I imagine the OW1 maps) to switch time of day. So the old day Route 66, night li jang etc. will return. I guess this is not implemented yet but they will and it's probably not hard to do. I have no idea when that will happen though.
I honestly didnt mind the updates being branded as Overwatch 2 until I saw rhat they did nothing with the textures of the maps. I think the new models and effects look fantastic, but they really needed to touch up the maps to play it off as a next generation overwatch update.
They definitely did right with the character redesigns for the vast majority of them imo. But still, I think the OW1 designs will probably always be more iconic. Since this is a game with a cartoony artstyle it didn't really need graphics update anyway, this type of artstyle doesn't age. I look at TF2 for example, it still looks pretty.
its literally an engine update and the "2" is there for the PvE. the PvP was ALWAYS meant to be just an update to the existing PvP game. But they didnt want to delay the game till PVE was ready so they released the PvP which IS infact an update to PvP. But that doesn't mean the whole of overwatch 2 including PvE is not worthy of the "2" in the title. Why is this so hard for people to understand jesus.
@@chrismorrison5301 So a whole new pve mode and the overhaul of pvp and going from a boxed to a live service game is not worthy of being a sequel? what is worthy in your eyes for a sequel then? genuinely curious. don't tell me that this could all be added as an update to the game cause everyone and their mother knows that ANY game could technically be updated instead of having a sequel.
@@ashonline77 No its not. There are thousands of sequels that show what a sequel should look like. A few new maps, a few new characters and some PvP changes (it wasn't an overall) don't warrant a two at the end of it. Other games have gone from priced to free to play without claiming it being a sequel. Rocket League one of many examples.
Naaah considering overwatch 2 wasn't planned on having a designated pvp update prior to 9 months ago, they never spoke of putting a box price on this iteration of the game. They did intend to sell the pve content, which they will still most likely put behind a paywall once it releases 2023, but I digress, this early pvp update release masked behind the name Overwatch 2 was never planned to be a purchase. I mean why would they consider it in the first place when that model proved to not allow them to support the game in the long run, something which the f2p battlepass model has proven to do so effectively in all these other games.
A small feature most wouldnt notice as not everyone has the skin but pink mercys hesking and damage beams dont seem to havr the pinke effect in the centre due to the nee effects mercys staff has
5v5 works so well with how overwatch can be played now. Every person on the team has to be playing their role correctly in order to win and solo carrying is a lot easier
I vaguely remember the devs talking about the reasoning behind OW2, something along the lines of "the implementation of a single-player campaign and rework of a lot of things, they're gonna use a new gameengine", dunno what to make of it
Simple, stick a subtitle on the single-player / co-op stuff and call it a day. People would still understand that the MP game was getting an updated engine and total balance overhaul as well, it just wouldn't be a PR disaster.
@@colbyboucher6391 but that’s the thing, the game runs on the same engine but with some netcode and texture mapping update - just feels like a “sneaky” way to justify a battlepass launch lmao
@@SPISheste I'm fucking tired of people misunderstanding this. Just extend this out to CoD still actually using the Q3A engine because that's where this train of thought leads. Most engine updates would never be noticed by pretty much any player. Do you work in software development? Because I do, and the great question of the job is how to present your boss with changes they'll actually notice because the vast, vast majority of your work is invisible to anybody who doesn't also do your job. The whole structure of projects is shaped by figuring out how to either protect devs from managers who don't think anything's happening, or to have enough "meaningful changes" (which are typically anything but) to present each week that the ignorant bastard doesn't fire you all.
As someone who rarely played overwatch after year 1 because of the stagnant meta and toxic play style based around it this feels like a very different game to me in the sense that it feels way more like overwatch did just after limits on characters were added (only one per team) during the second year
Okay I’ve never played Overwatch but I’ve always loved the character design and I’m enjoying the redesigns. The characters still feel like themselves if that makes sense. It strikes the balance of new and old.
i play overwatch, is a fun game, but what really got me into the game and fell in love with it were the characters. the characters helped a lot to stand out with other games
I was able to play the ow2 betas and noticed they did a bit of a downgrade in terms of lighting levels/contrast and bloom, also some effects like environment fog have been reduced, not saying it looks horrible now but compared to beta it feels a bit less appealing :/
If what you are saying is true, then it is good, more player with lesser powerful rig can enjoy OW2 too. More player > video cosmetics that 90% of the time you won't notice either especially in a fast paced shooter like this
@@samuelmahesa8045 lmao, as if designing a game for high end PCs is a smart business move....it's almost as bad as designing a IP solely around phones.... oh wait same company did this....activision blizzard
So they basically just re-released overwatch with new updates, this is basically like if Riot released a "New" League of Legends every season. "Oh new season comes! Can't wait for League of Legends 12"
Junkrats remodeled weapon frustrates me, the tire was put there to give the effect that the tires grip was launching the grenade. and the stick shift gave it so much personality
Never played the first game and I like 2 so far. The fast placed gunplay and movement reminds me og multiplayer fps games like Unreal Tournament and games.
Great video, and you're right.. It really is a mixed bag on the visual side of things. Just a tip though - the new one tank format doesn't necessarily mean that tanks need to play defensively. In fact, it's often the complete opposite. Tanks need to be much more aggressive now, and shouldn't be constantly acting as a wall for the team. Due to the massively increased damage, utility and survivability, a tanks job is usually to flank, or aggressively dive into the backline to take out supports/dps. You are such a disruptive force that your utility and massive damage is wasted acting as a bullet sponge all of the time. Rein can quite easily wipe a team now, Orisa is a complete brawler, and Winston makes it impossible to have a fair teamfight because the supports/squishy dps instantly die even before combat is initiated, and there isn't much the opposing tank can do to save them. The game just feels much more fast paced in its current state, and thankfully the days of shooting shields all match are pretty much over.
A great sound design change in OW2 is that you can hear your magazine running out of ammo for some heroes like Soldier76 and McCree (this is nonexistent in OW1), which is a nice change that will help in gameplay as it provides more information.
As someone who has played consistently since the original launch day of Overwatch 1, Overwatch "2" is better only because new content is being added again. I will save most of my judgement for the PVE content, you know, the actual part of the game that will make it a sequel.
Excellent work Nick! This game seems to be actually worse than the first one, regression. I don't understand how they managed to do that...? How long time did they spend on this game, 5 years? LOL.
I don't know how I feel about overwatch 2. On one hand I think the visuals are good and bad like the shadows which this video showcased and on the other hand I think the gameplay is better. One thing I know for sure, is that this game feels like an enhancement rather then a complete change which most of the time sequels do.
With the Battle Network Legacy Collection coming out some time next year, do you think you will do a comparison between that and the original GBA versions of those games?
Improvements to little details, but I feel ow1 had a little more character in its hud and ui. Characters look very detailed nowadays and have improved models and overall depth i feel. Lots of good small details snd some of the new designs look nice! Environments still look fantastic! A lil better lighting too. I really like the new ping system! Good comparison as always! Love overwatch! Been playing it off and on since launch! 😅😁👌🏻
The comparison of character and especially weapon models left me with impression that the original was made by a master and was "updated" by an amateur.
I liked a lot of the new gun sounds, though I think I liked the original for Pharah better, with it's more noticeable loud crack at the start of the attack
Great comparison! Although while the characters are now higher rez, their apearance is less coherent with themselves and the universe of overwatch. It looks like restyling just for the sake of restyliing. Would be nice if they simply update the textures rez of the older skins.
I'd say it's a moderate step forward in fidelity at best, High end graphics cards would be capable of FAR more detail than that we're seeing in the new models and maps.
Also don't know if you noticed but SMAA High never actually turns on in Overwatch 2. You can set it, but it's always back on medium as soon as you leave the menu.
1:05 - Sounds to me that you needed to get your eyes checked because no WAY were those older models that muddy or “low rez”! Maybe if played in the Switch it would look that way but I’ve played that original game on PS4 Pro PS5 AND Xbox One X, and they all looked as good as they were played on OG PS4 consoles on day one! You crazy, dude!
Open up the game on a PC (4K, ultra settings) and go to the overwatch 1 skin for Moira. Look at her hands. Then come back here and tell me to get my eyes checked.
My biggest issue with sound is that the sound stage is severely underdeveloped. You can hardly hear vital information anymore and its all muddled together. Also, the weapon sounds are SOO god damn loud :( The old weapon sounds were like verifiers that you were firing. The new sounds are ear shattering booms, and you cant tweak it at all. The original had its flaws, but it came out pretty much finished. OW2 screams incomplete. A good example is the ''Recent players'' tab where the name plates are placed on top of eachother. At best id call it another beta.
I just got what is messed up! Its based on proximity purely, whereas the OW1 version was ''counter based'', meaning that your hard counter was supposed to be louder. The new version however doesnt take into account the proximity to yourself, which means that the closest sound, aka you, becomes unfiltered which leads to an earshattering experience, and deaf when it comes to enemy sounds.
@@adriantrusca1245 Relax, it's still the first game but they updated the engine, made it F2P (and P2W) and are planning on adding new content (both free and overpriced).
I understand where you're coming from with the Lighting and time of day. But as someone that has been playing since the first beta half a decade ago I'm extremely grateful for the new changes in day/night. A cycle would be super epic, like always something else or, depending where you live something else. Or with updates omg imagine? One season it's like this and the next one it's back to normal. Missed opportunity there. It's very sad they just disappeared like that but I'm sure that they'll be back.
Yes. Though I ended up using Overwatch 2's "Overwatch 1" skins for the model comparisons because they were identical in everyway to the footage I had captured of OW1, only with matching animations and backgrounds.
Some characters you better (like Zarya, Mei or Tracer) and some look worser (like Moira, Ana and Mercy) generally I see more prominent black and smoother/more detailed hair with more beards which is a good thing. But it’s still strange and why they didn’t at least go with the fans feedback and what they would like to change or stay. Why no poll instead of so many random changes. (About especially widow I am very conflicted cause she looks more badass in 2 but her 1 look is more iconic and sexy in my opinion)
I think that the Genji change is great. If u think about it, Genji was technically naked. This new design is showing his growth, from believing he has accepted what he is, as he said in "Dragons", to now, where his design reflects that acceptance. He is choosing to wear clothes now, meaning he accepts his new body fully, and sees himself as naked without clothes. That's my theory at least
Tanks don't play more defensively, in myexperience.. because they sorta cant.. You have to be a lot more aggressive now, attacking if only because you cant just stand around feeding enemy ults. Even Reinhard is encouraged to be more aggressive (2 fire strike charges) even though he still has a shield.
I’m gonna have to push back on what you said at the beginning of the video. The updated skins with all the new lights, scratches, and moving pieces do not give these skins a “modern” look. The new skins are messy compared to their iconic predecessors. So many characters now have random bolts, screws, plates, and other greebles that they just become over-designed. Less is more in this situation and I truly think that the new designs suffer from this
Never thought I would say this, but I miss the loot boxes. It was a whole lot easier to get free cosmetics back then, now it takes ages (literally *five* years to get all the skins on a single character) without spending more money.
i hope we get the cut maps back, and i haven't even SEEN Cuba or Blizzard World yet. I don't know what is up with the map rotation. Design wise i find it to be "ok", its neither good nor bad.
