thank you for the complete and thorough review. I bought mine used. The guy bought passenger and then decided needed drivers side. Trying to figure out how to put it all back in was a blessing with your video plus, it was nice to see how the attachments worked. PERFECT!!
Awesome review Tim! That’s what they never tell you about the 270 and I saw you first hand this summer struggling with it. I can only imagine in the cold, raining and windy….. you’d get soaked before you can even get into the Rig. Food for thoughts for sure while trying to decide if I should ditch my 3 ARB awning which are easy in comparison and so offer more coverage realistically… I’d also question the water pooling issue on the top because I can clearly see some major fabric lag in between the aluminum members. With the ARB you can really cinch them and they shed water very well. Thanks Tim!! See you soon.
Hey Sam thanks for watching! Yeah I am better at putting it away than I used to be, but it's still a challenge for sure, especially with the larger Nomadic versions. Your tri-ARB setup is pretty cool you definitely have all the coverage, plus I can imagine a lot of cases where you really only need to set up one of them. Looking forward to running into you again next time you're out this way!
Batwing will snap its plastic hinges during setup unless two people are holding it up while quickly getting support poles up. Terrible. Selling mine. This is an upgrade for sure over the Batwing, in setup and durability.
Appreciate the video and honesty. I'm disappointed in OVS as the product description literally begins with these words: "Features: 129 Square Feet of Freestanding Covered Shelter" although the large warning label says that it is not intended to be used this way. Big profit, barely good products these days. It certainly looks like a great option but its a lot of money for what it is- at least it's better than the terrible batwing, those hinges on the batwing barely provide support to set the unit up.
Just purchased a 2023 Intech Explore. This is the awning that was on it. I can’t get it back in the storage case to save my life! It’s tall enough that you have to be really tall or I’m about to try and use a ladder. I’m 5’10.
Question here? Could you swap the top arm that goes across the hatch to the bottom position and the bottom arm to the top to gain a few more inches of clearance for the rear hatch to open a little more. Great video.
What rack system do you have there? Since the OVS 270 awning was backordered for the longest time, I ordered it immediately - now it's just sitting in my garage while I search for a compatible rack. OVS states that it will mount to most rack systems; but, given my luck, I'll spend a few grand and purchase one that is not compatible. Also, it looks like you're around the Colorado Springs area - yes, no? If so, I'm just north in Littleton. Great videos!
Well we run a Gamiviti rack of course! also we're just north of you in Broomfield. send an email sales@gamiviti.com and let me know what kind of vehicle you have, we'll go from there thanks!
Yes, great idea. I've been able to just rest the bag of poles on top of the awning, inside the bag, and it seems to fit there nicely. I put the black straps right next to it. The stick bag, OTOH, I just kinda hold in there while I close that last part of the zipper. Are you able to get all 3 in yours?
I'm holding out for one more from OVS, have one of the smaller LT awnings on order (has been on order since early March) and once I get that will do another review of the OVS. I'm hopeful that doesn't share the things I dislike about this larger version, mainly how cumbersome it is to fold up and put away, which would probably tip the scale in favor of the OVS. There are still some product features on the Batwing that I like better, its only main downside is just what can happen when it gets windy. Probably too early to say definitively which one to go with, and another video that's a more compare/contrast will definitely happen also once I have both on hand to actually evaluate.
I have one on my off road trailer and it is great. Except for folding it up. The attached straps are way to short and its a struggle to stuff the canopy so it all fits back in the cover. I know, its a small price to pay to get out of the snow, wind, sun, or rain.
100%. All of these awnings are going to totally fill up with water in the rain. But there are loops you can attach ropes to between each pole, to pull down on the fabric which then allows the water to drain out.
I have to disagree with you. I close mine in 1 min without any issues. Keep Practicing and you get it🤙. I was having a hard time the first couple of times
Batwing. For me the ease of setup/takedown beats out the stronger hinges. Plus I like being able to put stakes through the bases of the poles, another feature the Batwing has that OVS doesn't.
2 minutes into the video and that's all I need to see to avoid this awing. Ripped cover right away and cheap, chincy zipper. NEXT!! Thanks for the info
Thinking the exact same thing.. “the cover is as nice as most!” 5 seconds later “this ripped right out of the box and I broke this zipper immediately” Rousing endorsement. Hard pass.
In a review I’ve seen someone claim that they have allot of water accumulating inside the bag either while not in use or during rainy weather while traveling. Has anyone had this problem? Would hate to constantly have to check if it’s wet in the bag!
yes. that's a fair point, the whole thing gets wet if you park in the rain, the bag allows water to get inside. So you need to at least unzip the cover to allow it to drain out, flip the cover open to dry in the sun. One of the arguments for a quick-release attachment system to attach the awning, which we offer- keep the awning in the shed or garage until you actually need to go out and use it, then put it away dry afterwards, just like a ground tent.
@@woodatwork6927 the fabric is fine, the water comes in the back edge, where the zipper ends and those velcro flaps are supposed to seal it. I think it drips in at the top of the zipper
@@woodatwork6927 I'd also share my own experience in that it's not really a big deal. Again, I don't leave the awning installed all the time, only put it on for a trip, remove it when I get back... so making sure it's dry before tossing it back in the shed is not that big of a deal, no different from drying any other piece of camping equipment. And when camping in the rain, figure you're going to be putting the awning away when it's wet anyway, so you were probably already going to need to let it dry out at some point.
all good! though tbh it spends most of its time in storage. I'm better at getting it packed up, though it's still challenging to get it zipped closed sometimes, particularly when it's cold.
The POLES and PEGS are NOT to be stored in the awning cover bag, they can become projectiles and could kill someone. It is an awesome awning, packs easy and as designed (without poles and pegs, of course) with enough room to not wreck the zipper. Easily takes me almost the same time to deploy and pack away.
Also, my pegs bag is large enough to fit all my string lines inside and I keep the two straps for stretching the awning always attached and roll them up together with the awning, for easy deployment.
Very poorly designed cover. The cover is way to small and extremely difficult to pack up. I have replaced two covers and they both had the same problem. I no longer recommend this awning.
@@cmore2847 Not sure my friend, they might have changed the design a bit, I got mine in 2021 and my cover is large enough, even when I pack the awning in a hurry. If I have time and pack it carefully, I could fit the extra poles and pegs bags inside as well, but I simply throw them in the Jeep, not wanting the responsibility if they get airborne on the hwy.
Just received my awning today and I had an issue using the front zipper , mine is a passenger side! There was also a frayed strap and a guy line already installed on the awning! Deploys easy, stowing takes longer than deploying and stowing my RTT!
@@casTingcall07 Stowing it is horrible I have broken two covers so far and am getting ready to remove it and get rid of this nightmare. Mine is one of the first units they sold.
@@cmore2847 ! I solved that riddle… Standing on the ground! Stowing the awning was just plain almost impossible. However, once I stood on a step stool anything that gets the awning at chest level… works based on one’s height. It was very easy. They did send me the cover and strap. I used the awning on a trip last year. In high winds with a driving rain. It held up fine. I did use the 3 poles built in as (why not) didn’t make me work that hard to use them. I also used the others, the ropes and the tie down rain run off locations to keep water from ponding on the awning. Is it perfect no would I buy it again yes. Am I selling it now, maybe if it doesn’t attach easily to a van I just acquired. Along with a hard shell RTT.
i won't be looking any further into this awning manufacturer, why should you try and fix something that just came straight out of the box. not only did it rip but the zipper failed too.....yeah, no thanks #Nomadic
Very poorly designed cover. The cover is way to small and extremely difficult to pack up. I have replaced two covers and they both had the same problem.
UPDATE... I decided to give this one more chance... I told OVS I needed a new cover and mentioned my covers in the past did not fit. They gladly shipped me a cover at no charge and to my delight it fit much looser and it easily zipped right up. I will enjoy being able to use this awning again.
