I'm an Airdrieonians supporter who lived in Elgin for many years. I had the pleasure of watching both John McGinlay play in the Highland League (he was brilliant) and Owen Coyle play in his three stints as a player for Airdrie. 17 goals in 7 games is hard to beat! He is a club legend. I met Owen when my youngest son was the mascot for Airdrie when they played Elgin City. An absolute gentleman.
A very enjoyable interview for me as the Neal/Rioch/Todd era is my favourite as a Bolton fan - I particularly notice how sharp his memory is in remembering events so well that were around 30 years ago
I also loved listening to this ... he remembers every single kick of every single game both as a player and a manager ... a fantastic player and an even better raconteour.
Motherwell fan here. Great interview. Absolutely loved Owen Coyle, wonderful player......used to love the way he always "passed" the ball into the net. Good goalscorer for us, albeit I think his new years day penalty against Kilmarnock is still up in orbit somewhere. Well done Lads and thanks for all the goals Ownie.
As a footballer this is one of the best interviws ever. Thanks Liam for creating this so other footballers can just see into the Pro world, you quite rightly keep out of the conversations, but ask footballer questions and allow those pros to share their experiences. Much respect to you. Who did you play for? Saturday or Sunday?
Came off the bench and scored the goal that took us up from the Scottish 1st to the Prem, in the play offs against Partick Thistle....for that reason he'll always be liked by the Arabs at Tannadice.
i've so many memories going through my head as Coylie is talking , superb times - home and away and standing on Burnden terrace. i've met most of the boys and i met Phil Brown in a pub in Lytham St. Annes when he just signed for Blackpool and i was working in the kitchen and the manager knew i was a big Bolton fan and he says guess who's in , Phil Brown . he said come and say hello , so i did and i was wearing this Super John McGinley baseball cap and he looked at me and said you can get rid of that and threw mi cap over the other side of the pub. the sacrilege ! i even went to a few Blackpool matches to watch Phil
I watched Owen playing for Dumbarton ... a fantastic player for The Sons ... listening to this interview and he is just an amazing guy ... he remembers every ball he kicked during his long career and also every ball kicked during his managerial days ... what atreat to listen to him.
Had the pleasure of having a few drinks with Mr Coyle In the Muirton hotel in Inverness whilst Airdrie were on preseason, many years ago.. Brilliant striker!!
Met Owen at the Polmadie social snooker club in the Gorbals mid 90s I am sure he was at at a family gathering Possibly a christening Loved watching his partnership with Big John at Bolton Great Podcast Would still love to know if he actually did turn down the Celtic Job a few years back ?
Fascinating insight into the life of a footballer and manager. I do have to thank Owen though for the best day of my football supporting life when my team (Stoke City) narrowly beat Owen's Bolton wanderers 5-0 in a Wembley FA Cup semi final. Now look where both teams are!
Great podcast guys. Watched Owen playing a few times in Scotland. I never understood why he didn't become a superstar. There are a few who could learn from his work ethic. And what a side Bolton were at that time!
I don’t have a personal recollection of that Everton replay (was 8 going on 9 at the time) but - I do believe - contemporary accounts of the game suggest we were battered by Everton (2-0 down), then they took their goal scorer/presumed match winner Stuart Barlow off, Stubber got us a goal back and then we “nicked” it (taking it to extra time) late on. Therefore, outstanding comeback but hardly an outstanding performance. Shite Everton team (Mike Walker had just taken over, and nearly took them down that season) as well. Still, pivotal point during Coyley’s tenure at Bolton that. The fans had a service station encounter with some Geordies on the way to the game, and decided to crib from their “Andy, Andy Cole” chant… “He gets the ball and does fuck all, Owen Owen Coyle - then he gets the ball and scores a goal, Owen Owen Coyle”. Was fun the next day, sticking it to my two Everton fan mates (who had been adamant that they were going to stuff us after the draw). One of ‘em ended up converting to Bolton after that as well.
I remember back in the day you would see oweny’s company car up at croftfoot roundabout heading for sims hill , his car had the team sponsor on when he was at Bolton , a wee sharp eye Castlemilk bhoy , just wished he played for Celtic
Watched him in his early days at Dumbarton.Great player Also watched his brothers Tommy and Joe.I think the three of them played in the one match for the sons in the stirlingshire cup but not 100% sure
Lovely guy and bwfc played some great stuff when he 1st came in. Injuries and financial limitations were part of it but dropping jussi for bogdan and throwing away a 2 nil lead at home to wba in the penultimate game; That's on the manager
Watch owen playing for Dumbarton at old boghead all the old boys said he's going to make it ie rangers and Scotland and i still laughing today hes a tim
My Mum always told me Owen was "infectious" ..she spent a fortnight on antibiotics after thier last night oot !!!!....(sorry dad )uncle yogi made me say this !!!
Owen coyle is tiring haha, he talks too fast and I think over time I would snap underneath him. That's not a personal slight just a preference, clearly loves the game and it was lovely to here the passion in him
Great player for Bolton, not so special as a manager. Signed a few duds to say the least. Queens Park was a different story, done very well until Simon Murray was allowed to join Ross County and the team nose dived.
Ownie talks about airdrie supporters being sectarian and anti Roman Catholic, and his love of celtic. What he does not tell you is that celtic were founded by Marist Brothers, many of whom have been convicted of child abuse! Also the first sod of turf was laid by Michael Davitt, an Irish republican terrorist. Celtic fans sing IRA songs at every game.....knowing this might go some way to understand why other football fans despise celtic and their fans!
