@@kityhawk2000 Owen Jones campaigned AGAINST Brexit. "Yes, as a socialist, I had profound reservations about the current incarnation of the EU, and even considered the case for leave. I dismissed the argument because of persuasive pleas from European leftists to stand together to reform and change the EU, and because it was clear that a hellish anti-immigration crusade beckoned. And so, alongside the Another Europe Is Possible alliance, I passionately campaigned against the Brexit juggernaut. Then the vote happened, and we lost." The Guardian. Jan 3rd 2018.

I was unhappy with labour but on the run up to the Labour conference was just about thinking, 'Ok Starmer will be a less ambishous blair but probably better on wars and human rights... I'll vote for them and hope they'll suprise me with their domestic plans'. Then one of the first things I got around to hearing from the conference was his take on the gaza situation and I was uterly gobsmacked. I was going out of my way to find reasons to vote labour but at every turn they were going out of their way to drive me away. Will be voting green for the first time.

Remember what the Lib Dems brought into power, and didn't even say sorry for it. A decade of hardcore austerity extremism, more wars, and the sale of the royal mail, all in exchange for a 5p charge on plastic bags. If you're tempted to vote green, look at what the greens have "achieved" in Germany, and watch the 2019 climate leaders "debate", remembering just how critical this election was, and watch how casually they all play with the talking points, like for them it's just another day on television.

He’s only quit now, given the latest news regarding the front bench’s comments on Thatcher who’s synonymous with treating the working class and the poorest like failures and vermin. Given that historically Labour always had the interests of the working class and the poor at its fundamental core, he’s well reasoned to be annoyed that Labour have abandoned that and are failing to oppose the conservatism that has made Britain ruinous. If his parents and grandparents were still around, they’d probably follow him out Labour’s door. It is not the Labour Party anymore, isn’t worthy of that name, it should be the New Conservatives. This is essentially identical to the trajectory of the Democratic Party here in the U.S. Decades being the supporters of labor, worker protections, and civil rights. Then around the time of Regan and Thatcher the party shifted their focus. They abandoned unions. Threw their support behind big tech, and well-educated, upwardly mobile professionals. All the while raking in the corporate cash with both hands. When Republicans are in power they say, 'what can we do'. When they are in power they say, 'we would if the Republicans would let us'.

@emjay9688
@emjay9688 3 месяца назад
A lot of people are upset about gestures like that because as things stand the Greens will still not be in a position to change anything at all (not with first past the post system), while Labour's chances of getting power are diminished as left vote is being split. People still remember what happened in 1992 elections. Labour needs to win as much of the Centre as it can, and in doing so (for pragmatic reasons) engages in idiocies like the whole shirt nonsense, or doesn't engage in futile symbolic gestures like the Gaza vote. The current options are - Labour that's less left leaning than we might want, or 4 more years of Britain being driven into the ground by the corrupt imbecile party that the Cons have gradually become in recent years.

A true left, rooted in economic justice and class politics is the only way to unite people. The left tears itself apart by engaging too often in identity politics. This is not to say the right don’t either, but I don’t care what they do. Everything needs to start with workers. Support for workers, against the oligarch class. If there's an actual risk the Tories will win your seat, hold your nose and vote for the only viable alternative, even if that's Labour. But there are also many places in the country where the Tories have no chance in hell of being re-elected, and there IS an opportunity to bring in alternative candidates, especially if we actually get out there and canvas for them.

On 7th October last year I foresaw that the Labour Party could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. This is a hard question, and in a way there isn't a correct answer - in the forthcoming election, do we prioritise the NHS and social justice for the 60 million or so in this country, or do we prioritise, but not resolve, what is going on between the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights? If opposition to the Tories fractures enough for them to scrape together a Conservative victory then kiss goodbye to the NHS, your pensions, any form of social services, and get ready for the privatisation of everything, including HMRC. The Tories hate us, they have never forgiven the people for 1945 and the creation of a welfare state, and they want it gone. Those are the stakes, don't help them.

I mean, rich people and people of influence are well represented but what about the many many people that don't really understand politics and the way UK mainstream media leads them to actually vote against their own interests by making a huge deal about immigration. And pretending they want to stop it. The mainstream partys need immigration to help keep their donors make ever increasing profit through cheap labour. Yet they get a lot of mileage by PRETENDING to want to stop it. Rwanda...what a joke. Stick a pin in a map and pretend that will be the way to make England for the English. Just registered to donate £10 a month. I used to be a labour member when Corbyn was leader and I complain so much about how we have no decent alternative to the big two. Well this is it. Whether it’s successful in achieving anything this election, I’ll be honest I don’t have much faith but I think we have to try. Labour in its current guise are an absolute abomination of a party and any power we can take from them, even if it’s just a seat or two could build the beginning of a coalition of greens and like minded independents working together, then it’ll be worth it. I think the benefit of this may come in the election after labours first term. Once people see we were right about starmer, many people will become disillusioned and fall into the arms of the far right as Owen says but many will seek out something on the left. If they can see that ‘We Deserve Better’ made a dent into Labour this election, even if it was ever so slight, it might encourage others to join next time when more will be ready to look for an alternative.

It really worrys me how many people think this is going to work. I feel like I’m either missing something or the left is literally just gonna hand another 4 years to the tories. A lot of people out there don’t have the privilege to take that risk. Remember when everyone voted Lib Dem before the coalition government? Change does need to happen but imo we need to vote Labour in then hold them to account on everything and put so much pressure on them they can’t be Tory lite anymore

Let's hope it isn't 1992 again.

Sometimes change is needed or forced on us. That's how the Labour party started in the first place.
