The actor and filmmaker came in to work on a supplement for our The Squid and the Whale edition. We learned he's a big fan of the Robert Downey Sr. Eclipse series. Shop Owen's Closet Picks: www.criterion....
Bernard: “You don’t wanna be like Ivan. He’s a Philistine.” Frank: “Then I’m a Philistine.” Bernard: “Okay. Here’s a ping pong paddle to the face then!”
I'm posting them picks! Written on the Wind (1956) Crumb (1994) The Shooting (1966) The Horse's Mouth (1958) Pickpocket (1959) Robert Downey Sr. Anthology The Golden Age of Television Paths of Glory (1957) The Naked Kiss (1964)
Haha! The Big Chill is a great movie but Kevin Kline has been in much better movies throughout his long career and I would hope Owen would pick one of those other movies if asked. A Fish Called Wanda is nothing short of brilliant and immediately comes to mind as does Sophie's Choice and In & Out.
@@SoulShines4U True, but I believe The Big Chill is the only one that’s currently part of the Criterion Collection, while those others are not. A Fish Called Wanda would be cool to see in the collection, though.
First of all, it's so much fun seeing how much Owen looks like Dad. Like his shirt too. I like him saying it's shameful he's yet to watch Written On The Wind and also pointing out how much he likes the former Criterion line signature atop the case. Has watched Crumb "over a hundred times". One of my favorites too. The Monty Hellman story and The Horse's Mouth being his dad's favorite movie-interesting. Makes me want to give Pickpocket another shot. Didn't care for it the time I saw it....half/saw it. Loved the Downey Sr. story. Has to be the first time anyone's ever plucked The Golden Age of Television from the closet. Path's of Glories' Timothy Carey was the only actor Kubrick allowed to improvise-again, very interesting. So right about The World's Greatest Sinner being a crazy movie starring Carey. TCM showed it recently. Something else. And the details about Shock Corridor were interesting. And the wisking away down the hall, looking back tossing out a 'Goodbye'. Gotta say...I liked this video!
I wonder if The Big Chill was in that closet, considering it is part of the collection and it’s where Owen’s parents met (Phoebe Cates auditioned for Jennifer Tilly’s role)
Meg Tilly actually. Meg told the story of how she auditioned for Jennifer J Leigh's part in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" which means she could've worked with Phoebe Cates, but she didn't get the part b/c she & Phoebe looked too much alike, more like sisters rather than friends. (both actress' are half Chinese)
Just met him at Chiller Theater in Parsippany, NJ. Got to talk to him about Funny Pages and even got a custom doodle on a Tijuana Bible. Super nice guy.
Just watched The Squid and the Whale for the umpteenth time, one of my favourite films. Great performance as Frank. Weirdly only just realised Owen Kline's dad is Kevin Kline.
For any other art form....and for any other source of GEEKDOM......I don't think there is a series of clips anywhere!! I can feel the dopamine in my brain going squirt squirt squirt as a result of such exquisite surrogate retail therapy.
YES thank you. In fact why do they even make DVD? Why is it even an option for purchase? I have checked out Criterion DVDs at my library since they were free and deeply regretted watching the standard definition. Not worth it even if free.
Kip Vaughan I mean I know why they exist, no reason to toss out perfectly fine digital media storages. But I don't get why the people that come into the closet would get dvd and not blu-ray.
@@joegrundy2197 Actually ya nit, I can careless about getting them for free. If you were bright enough you would’ve figured out my comment was just poking fun. If I want something I pay for it, it’s called making a purchase. Look into it.
Ghost world is an adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ comic and Crumb is just a documentary so there’s no original work to “rip off” Haven’t seen Art school confidential but you said Terry’s “works” so you must mean his filmography in general, which can’t be true.
