Cincinnati Symphony principal bass Owen Lee demos one of the world's oldest and rarest double basses. Crafted by Gasparo Da Salo in Brescia, Italy circa 1590, this beautiful and historically important bass is currently for sale at (and restored by) Cincinnati Bass Cellar. Pretty cool to hear this voice from so far in the past! (Filmed at Cincinnati Bass Cellar on July 10, 2016.)
Program;
Koussevitzky Concerto opening, Bach Cello Suite 1 Prelude, Beethoven 5 Trio, Beethoven 9 Recitatives.

The tone on the lower range is absolutely incredible, I've heard a lot of good sounding old uprights but none of them had that kind of authority. Fantastic playing sir.

Every double bass WANTS to sound like this. And bass players have dreams that their own basses will sound like this bass. This bass has great resonance through the whole range. Incredible.

The responsiveness is second to none...it is 10 times more responsive than my violin...as soon as the bow touches the string it speaks

Good lord! The best bass I've ever heard! Bertolotti is of course considered the luthier-king of double basses in particular.... and you, Owen Lee, played marvellously on this and really honoured the instrument that has survived so long. It feels like it had been waiting a long time for you to finally come along and play it :) Nice work, I loved the Bach in particular !

What a magnificent instrument... and beautiful playing (too bad about the traffic noise). I bought my bass at the CBC, a 1950's Alfred Meyer, that was on consignment there.

Interesting how this bass was never meant to be played at that range, but it's superb craftsmanship granted it the power beyond it's early life intentions, and makes it sound amazing at that range nonetheless!

Is it more difficult to play a larger instrument, say compared to the cello, due to the increased space between fingerings, etc? My theory teacher from music school in the 1970’s shared this on Facebook and I’m so glad he did! Thanks for sharing your lovely talent!!

Sorry, this must be a fake, or a copy made in Dragonetti's times; the REAL gasparo is currently NOT for sale, property of Basilica di San Marco, in Venice, exposed in its museum. It was restored a few years ago by the famous luthier Sergio Scaramelli. Further more, the original double bass is born, and still it is, three-stringed. Enjoy the original, of course this is a wonderful bass.
@peterk2455
@peterk2455 6 лет назад
So all the other da Salo, such as www.aco.com.au/blog/post/our-new-double-bass, are fake too? So all the 6 string Violon that da Salo converted to double bass are fake, as they are not 3 string?
@michelemancusi1408
@michelemancusi1408 6 лет назад
at the end of 16th century, the double bass was born in Italy as an original instrument directly built on the violin family logic and technology, mostly with three strings, and later adapted with four; astonishingly powerful and with deep and "brutal" sound, compared to the violone da gamba, already existing. Nowaday, when finding ancient or very old basses, is possible to find every sort of rebuilt or modified instruments. The habit of transforming old violone into doublebass is relatively recent, such as the necessity of making violins more steady and powerful than old models. I can't say how many basses or violones made Gasparo da Salò, but are many copies of the one owned by Dragonetti, very old and, we can say now, ancient copies. Honestly i don't think that more than two or three instruments of such mass can survive more than 400 years, and it is true that the market is many times completely out of reality, especially the market of ancient bowed instruments. I am not an expertise, i do not know the depth of violin market, and i really do not care, but for basses is a story apart, they were less than other instruments, too large to carry comfotably even now, fragile and often owned by theatres, schools, churches just like the organs; see, for instance, the story of spanish pear-shaped basses. All this does not throw away any beaty and value to the sound of these basses, that are amazing and heavily restored. I personally use a superb new bass that can face easily a 300 years old bass, so my question is: where feticism ends and where begins a rational consideration of facts? Obviously, as i said, with ancient (or so presumed) basses is even more difficult to answer.
