This is an incredible wistful rendition of Never Meant. You can tell through his strumming how much intimacy and maturity he's experienced just in the intervals between American Football and Owen. While American Football's original reminds me absolutely of high school, this version reminds me of a man looking back at high school. The fact that he remade this song is just no less than poetic.
Elliott Sarre that's still cover, dude. because the right goes to American Football, including Holmes and Lamos as well. Just like Damageplan covering Pantera's Walk back then.
It's like the Americ AnFootball version is what happened months after the two broke up and Owen's is a look back on that relationship 5-6 years later. Really nice rendition.
I emailed Mike after this song came out and asked if he would cover any more american football songs, and he was like super nice and kind and said no i think ill stick to owen from now on. And then the whole american football revival came, and i was like yeah thats good, could you cover some owen now, would love to hear the whole band play 'bad news'
This songs hitting pretty hard right now. Started talking to someone and even met her once and it felt surreal; never met anyone like her. We even agreed to see each other the week later, but she got distant days later. My guess is she’s still getting over a previous relationship and I was just there to help her cope. This feeling sucks.
I can't even choose which version is better. The American Football and the Owen version are both absolutely phenomenal. I'm just lucky to have heard them before.
Does anyone ever take a huge breath and just completely relax at the beginning of the song? It's just one of those songs. I swear. I want this song to be one of those songs that I just completely forget about. Then to suddenly hear it again 20 years later, still loving it, and cry because everything from now, all my troubles, fears, thoughts, loves, memories come flooding back with this 4 minute piece of genuis.
i like this version of "Never Meant" a lot. The acoustics are really good, but the original is a lot more jazzy and upbeat which I prefer. Altogether, both are pretty amazing.

Çok güzel ya out.
This is the most sobering song I've heard in a long time. The moment I felt from disconnecting from my ex to where I am now is nothing short of divine and I hope that everyone that even glances at this is thinking of someone they love. Fuck the idea you have, just tell them how you feel and if you don't I'll come kick your ass.
this split was first released in 2002, so the song was probably recorded shortly after the s/t was in 2001. he was probably still using/learning to use pro tools at the time
Dear God. I thought This Town Needs Guns was a real gem as far as the merit of composition goes, but this Kinsella fellow fills me with more pain and love than I had previously believed to be possible. What a beautiful and honest soul this man has.
I found the original American Football version a while ago but I found this one recently. I haven’t listened to the original in a while so hearing made me feel some strange distant memories. The experience listening to this was less nostalgic and more of an emotional rebirth. Thanks Owen.
I like this a lot. A new rendition of an old song thats his... its a weird concept but awesome. For him to play the original song with this project wouldn't sound right; plus I feel like he added some little things that even add to the original song but almost don't make this a cover but a new original song. Super cool.
They're also performing as a band in Seattle and a few other locations very soon. Mike kinsella is bouncing around bands as he is very adventurous with his music career.
I read all the time over people arguing whether this or AF version is better and more emotional etc. and I know nobody gives a flying fuck but this is my observation: I met that girl in 2012 on a business trip (won't give details of our locations, it's irrelevant) just right after I discovered AF and Never Meant. Been there with her just one night, we weren't even flirting. Went back home and stay in constant chat from then on. We basically fell in love (at least I did for sure) with each other but didn't have enough time/money/luck to meet each other again soon after we first met. Year passed, I met one other girl and our communication ended. There were just occasional 'Hi's' from time to time. After 9 months or so my relationship ended. Just right at the time when AF released the official Never Meant video at the exact moment when I realized that I am still in love with her. We re-connected, started chatting again and not long after, there was some strange coincidence that she was coming to my town. Probably two of the best days of my life. So it was my turn to visit on her, in the same town that we first met. Unfortunately, she was going through very rough period healing over big tragedy in her family. And even though I thought visiting her would help her, she completely froze and just shut down. Some time passed, I met my future wife, now having kids and stuff. What I am trying to say: AF version was everything from start till the end of our so called relationship. And Owen's is just me now: couple years after, a bittersweet taste left out of it. It's not that I miss it but definitely unable to forget. And will be wondering ever after if it was truly never meant or it was something else.
Miroslav Dimitrijevic this song, well to me as a high school boi, it’s kinda my retrospective over this girl I had feelings for. I protected her from her stalker like ex and that’s when I realized I feel in love with her. The love was unrequited of course since I didn’t want to stress her out. So time passed on and after being close friends for a year, I told her my feelings on Christmas. Well, she friendzoned me, and also I the crushing reality arrived when I realized that she had horrible social anxiety. Basically me just telling my feelings fucked up her life.... and these two songs taught me that you can only shoulder the burdens and move on, otherwise your gonna be stuck in this pothole of darkness
Let's just forget Everything said Everything we did Best friends and better halves Goodbyes And the autumn night when we realized We were falling out of love (There were some things that were said that weren't meant) But we never did Not to be Overly dramatic I just think it's best 'Cause you can't miss what you forget So lets just pretend Everything and Anything between you and me Was never meant
He says ‘the other night’ not autumn night; i think its different slightly from the original. Edit: you straight up posted the never meant lyrics. This song has more many changes.
Tfw you break up with your SO and have to pack your bags in the morning, but there are no hard feelings between you. You just weren't fast enough for love.
So, ....if the other was the American Football version, this is...the Soccer version...? Great song, love them both ....now I want an Australian Rules Football version. The more the merrier.
That's right. I saw of video of him online where he teased playing it live and then he went and played something else. Truer emotions are rarely spoken.
@legitdreamsexplode I feel you man. I cried the first time I heard the AF version and I've played that album hundreds of times. Then after a few years I heard this version... I cried harder than I did the first time I heard the AF version. Fucking Owen man. He just has such a unique way of making such beautiful music...
Idk.. just kind to did for me, specifically the voice. Listen to American Football's version and around 2:11 he says "never did" ..that's the best example I could give. If you don't agree that's good too!
