We were excited to see what song Owen Pallett--a.k.a. Final Fantasy, a.k.a. string arranger for Arcade Fire, among others--would choose for Undercover, because pretty much anything was guaranteed to turn out radically different from the original (and gorgeous). He grabbed "Game Of Pricks," from Guided By Voices' classic 1995 album Alien Lanes. Turns out he was a big GBV fan back in the day, but didn't realize until recording this cover that the song features the line, "Weep to water the trees." Pallett's latest album is the terrific Heartland.

This version really highlights the beautiful lyrics by Robert Pollard......weep to water the trees....its just such a fantastically bittersweet line and works great with the violin.

@mandrick All he said in the end is that he doesn't want to be around jocks when they're drunk. He said the live concert was amazing and he loves jocks so I don't know what the problem is here. Owen Pallett is a lovely guy and amazing arranger/performer who appreciates all music, so should we.

OMG! I saw Owen a good 15 years ago at a Stuart McLean show in Windsor, Ontario. Just him and his violin. He was amazing. I had no idea he was in Arcade Fire.

That's why it's a cover. omg. It's not supposed to be identical to the original version. There's nothing wrong with preferring an original and I tend to be in the camp that believes the original version of a song will always be superior because it's being performed as the artist intended. Just like I may not know much about GBV, I'm guessing you don't know much about Owen Pallett. It works both ways. He translated their song into his musical style which, yes, is different.

Exactly. Owen has a different style from the original band...that's the entire point!!! He obviously respects their music and lyrics.

Actually, his brother Jim Pollard was the excellent basketball player who still holds a records in his high school for most points scored in a game. Robert threw a no-hitter in college. www.espn.com/blog/music/post/_/id/6648/robert-pollard-talks-college-no-hitter

ya they are a little at least Robert Pollard is. He played in school with his brother. Watch the documentary that comes with the Hardcore Ufos boxset.

Robert Pollard is jock. He pitched Ohio State's first and only no hitter in 1979.He is ultra competitive. That's probably why he talks so much smack about shitty bands when he's on stage. And he's usually correct.

John Stoneback ; “Right state, wrong school,” as they say. Pollard pitched for Wright State in Dayton, not Ohio State. But as you mention, Pollard (and his brother) were incredibly gifted athletes. His brother was nearly a pro basketball player and Bob was revered in multiple sports. They still can hoop big time.

I don't see anything current, I like the cover idea but wish it was an annual thing... like Neil Hannon covering mag fields, TYP/Ivri Lider covering final fantasy/Owen Pallett, Owen Pallett covers Jarvis Cocker/Pulp... so many covers and it's rare imho to have the amazing talent Pallett has, all his covers I think are better than the originals (especially Caribou's Odessa and This Modern Love/Bloc Party.. Ivri Lider does do an incredible job covering I kissed a girl... with the young professionals, love their cover of Lana Del Rey...

Uh, excuse u. Rude. Owen is one of the most talented musicians in music right now, and is behind a lot of the orchestral arrangements of popular and famous bands. To say his music is bullshit is highly ignorant statement and just because he wasn't a fan of their live concert atmosphere doesn't make him a bad person.

Just my two cents: it sounds like he's asked "you're a fan going back?" and his response was that he WAS a fan UNTIL he saw a bunch of jock at the show. So he stopped being a fan because of the jocks. which is a bit silly. Also, Bobby P was an all star athlete in college and when someone asked him about the smashing pumpkins, his response was something like "those guys? we kicked their ass in basketball!"

I just think he's misunderstood what a jock is. If you go to ANY punk show, nearly everyone will be drunk and EVERYONE will be jumping around and going for it. I DO NOT think punks are jocks....they just like havin a good time!

Yes, because using a woman's body part to insult someone is a perfectly good thing to do and a wonderful way to conduct an argument. Owen's music may not be for everyone but there's no need to be rude about it. He's very talented and if you know anything about string composition, you can see that.

There's nothing wrong with people have different definitions of fun. Owen is a soft spoken, openly gay, string musician. I CANNOT IMAGINE why he might be uncomfortable at a loud drunken concert where people were getting pushed around. But in all seriousness, just because he wasn't a fan of the live atmosphere doesn't mean he didn't get it. People have different tolerances for those kind of environments. I love a lot of punk bands but would have a panic attack at one of their live shows. haha

StretcherCaseBaby it was a bit of a contradiction, he thought they were the best live band he'd ever seen but, hated the crowd. thats not unique though. Many first timers leave a gbv show feeling like that. I'm a fellow Daytonian and have seen their shows all over OH IN and KY and can say about every show is a drunken ballyhoo. plenty of room for ppl in the back who dont like their physicality of being up front. Although their are a lot of "jock" types at their shows, I can also say I've experienced the most comradery with strangers in any setting, at GBV shows. Unquie cover by this guy too.

Just cuz people are getting drunk and shovin eachother around doesn't make the crowd jocks, almost any rock, punk, metal or ska show in london is full of drunk people goin mental but their the furthest thing in the world from jocks. Their just drunk music fans having a good time, everyone gets battered but theres always etiquet innit

Even though I don't really like this cover, I think he did what he wanted to do. Obviously I'm a believer that a "cover" shouldn't be a carbon copy of the original - why bother - it's already been done that way. Take it to place it's never been before, and do it in your own style.
