Master Instructor, Tournament Champion, and Actor, Owen "Obosan," Watson, performing one of Maestro Peter Urban's katas. This footage was used in the movie Force Four.
Just saw this post I responded to your other post...didn't know you hadn't met him. He was a VERY interesting person with a VERY big heart. A little strange sometimes, but always a character to be watched. I learned a lot from just watching how he walked through the room. He had a powerful presence, strict training, and he truly loved what he was doing. I can still hear his gravelly voice off in the distance. I never even knew his name back then as he kept a lot about his life private. He once told me, if you know me then you'll know me. I had only been with him 1-2 years before getting shot. I was 19 so we were still kinda on different pages but I'll NEVER forget ALL that he did for me!
@@owenwatson89 your grandpa!?? How old are you now and how well did you know him? If you knew him before he passed and after 1991, then I'm thinking he probably mentioned me to people which I can verify. I was homeless and he did a lot to help me. I got shot in the back in front of his reno/sparks dojo. I saw him briefly afterwards but while I was recovering he moved his school and I wasn't able to ever find him again. Then years later I found out he had passed away. It bothers a great deal that I never saw him again. I would love as much information as I can get as well as his resting place so one day I can pay my respects 🙏
I think this is pretty cool. It's not a kata from the Goju syllabus that I'm familiar with, but it may be an interesting oyo-type of interpretation. I've had the honor of some instruction under Sensei Merriman and I believe he may have studied with Peter Urban, and there were different influences back then. This kata demonstration is pretty cool.
Chuck Merriman AND Peter Urban were controversial types as Grandmasters. They were legends in their own minds. Bullshito to the tenth degree. Merriman got his Tenth Dan from nobody knows where, while Urban said his was from Gogen Yamaguchi and Richard Kim, according to Black Belt Magazine. Yamaguchi and Kim both got their "tenth dans" from a box of Crackerjacks.
What kind of GOJU is THIS? I’m not trying to hate but it doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen I was trained in Harlem Goju under LEON WALLACE and SAM MCGEE at the 135th streetBathhouse dojo. From what I understand GM WALLACE was a student of GM PETER URBAN
O’bosan Owen Watson was partially responsible for the development of Chinese Goju Karate, but Shidoshi RVC is the primary GM. This was the USA Goju rendition of Kururunfa! I am Chinese Goju myself. Chi’en!
Yeah. I was laughing for 36 hours straight because some guy told me Urban learned his forms from a monkey at the Bronx (?)zoo. It was supposedly "Monkey Kung Fu".
Hakama??? Really??? Not for karate. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Obasan and obāsan are Japanese words meaning 'grandmother' or 'older woman' respectively. Lmao. Not impressed looks ridiculous.
This is funny because Urban Goju Ryu never had any kata, only "free fighting": punching and kicking, and even that was bullshit 'cause the students AND THE TEACHERS were getting their asses kicked.
Typical spook made-up shit , this shit will get people hurt , quick !. Fake garbage from a fake martial artist . I can see the spook logic , look good but fuck the effectiveness !.
Nah, Owen Watson was a stone cold badass. In terms of the Kata, USA Goju “butchered” this Kata, Kururunfa (“To Hold and Strike Suddenly”), looks nothing like the Goju Ryu version. But one wee to analyze the Kata, it’s destructive.
I actually like it. And this coming from someone who’s studied and received black belts from Sung Lung Miu and Shotokan, shown katas in tourneys on the East coast and West coast. Fought full contact, studied Ninpo, judo, Ju Jitsu, and tai chi. I know katas, and have won first , second, thirds, etc., frequently. Either you are biased or you don’t know what you are looking at. That is my primary style you are disrespecting.
@@LaoZi2023 I am not being biased and I do know what I'm looking at. I too have won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places as well as 5 Grand Championships in both Weapons and Forms. The kata being shown on the video is horrible. I have seen this kata several times and never won from what I have seen. No, I'm not being an asshole either when it comes to my comments. I have been studying the art of American Gojuryu Karate for 27 years. The American Gojuryu Karate system that was founded by Peter Urban. I know when I see a good well executed kata being performed and when a kata is being performed badly. Again, with all do respect, I'm not the only one saying this is a bad kata. Look further down the other comments. No, I'm not being an asshole either. I never called you that. Therefore, don't disrespect me. If you are unable to handle criticism on the videos you post, than don't post anymore badly formed katas on RU-vid. Thank you.
