The lyrics are kinda sad and dark, but the music and melody are upbeat and happier. It kinda feels like a metaphor for dark personal times with the unwavering hope and belief that things will get better.
To me, it's both. It's like the song itself is about being at rock bottom, but the message is the only way left to go is up. It doesn't matter where you are in life; what matters is the direction you're facing.

I've noticed that a lot of people are saying Owl City has changed. I'd say it has, but change is inevitable. I personally like both the 'older' songs as much as the 'newer' songs. It's like Lincoln Park; it's not that it gets worse as time goes on, it just naturally evolves to try to fit the atmosphere while being unique still. I enjoy all the music, after all that's what we come here to hear.
same, accutally, Owl City is a tie of the only artist that I like all of the music to. Right beside him is Maroon 5. But, even if I like 5, Owl City is my favorite of all the music, it's not because of voice, not because of his looks, but because of his complete creativity in expressing his self. don't get me wrong, I do absolutely love his voice and looks, but Owl City is one of the few people that can turn such a meaningful song, into a beautiful song that most people don't care what it's about because of how amazingly, astonishing the tune and creativity is.

Pause Films ...No he isn't. I feel no change between his present and past singles, and I'm pretty sure he still writes his songs. Personally, I like his electro. His inspirations are people like Zedd. It's natural for him to change, especially with the times. Maybe he's hoping we will, too. But hopefully, for his older fans, he'll switch between electro and pop or whatever that is.

I know this 4 years old comment, but I want to say you're about right. Adam said he made this song based in video-games he played. I always would think in a great meaning to this song, but knowing it was about video-games made me laugh!
This is one of the very few ‘modern’ artists I think I’ll listen to for the rest of my life. My music taste changes very frequently, but Owl City and Adam Young have been with me my entire life. Old songs and the new ones always resonate well with me, and it’s something I’m all too happy to share with friends, or play through earbuds when I need time to myself. This is important music, and it’s all thanks to this artist.
Personally this song means a lot to me. To me the song represents someone who is very misunderstood and afraid of letting their inside show. Someone who is constantly enraged and screams at the people they love. It’s how I’ve felt for a long time and I feel like it’s getting worse. I know how you feel. I would feel so bad that my heart felt heavy. And I'd let it sink because it just took too much energy to feel anything else but sadness. But I need you to know how important you are cause this world is full of people who want to be asked "How are you?" and to be able to say more than "good" or "tired." I got to a point where I was so broken that I made it a point to not let anyone else feel the way I do. And by doing this, it's helped me. It's helped me stay positive even though I have some bad days. I need you to know how important you are. I believe in you. And when the rest of the world or even you don't believe in yourself, I will. Keep going.

I see it as he's about to kill himself, yes, and then "there's a different twist in the storyline". Either someone stpos him, he changes his mind, or he fails trying to commit suicide.
I think it’s an optimist vs pessimist situation here. It either means he kills himself or changes his life for the better depending how you look at it. Knowing Adam, he probably meant it as changing his life for the better, given how he holds Christian values very close to his heart. It would be unlikely for him to write songs about suicide in such a happy manner (he’s capable of making slow, emotional piano tracks so why choose such an upbeat, pop-y melody for a topic as a dark as this?)
I always thought of the whole song as a pseudocide note (pseudocide is fake suicide btw) you've already noticed the suicide elements, but then "It's do or die"? clearly you're not going to die if you do it right.

yeah i agree, maybe the music industry has been stressing him lately. it does seem that way from what he wrote on Adam Young Scores.i liked Mobile Orchestra but it seemed a bit rushed, like it was put together just for the sake of making an album.i could be wrong about that though. still i am really excited about his new project! cant wait to see what he makes for this year.

Owl City's songs are so great, yet their stange somehow. When you hear one its hard not to love it, and they all feel so familiar, though not copies of each other. the same but different. Nostalgia hits hard even if you've just been introduced to the specific one you're hearing. Am I the only one who thinks this?
I have to say that this is easily one of my, if not my favorite, Owl City song. I love the classics, and I grew up with them and they were a huge help for me, but this one just stands out. His music always had this cheery, upbeat sound to it although the messages weren't always sunshine and rainbows, and the text was well thought out to symbolize all sorts of things- but this one is much more... powerful. This one inspires me. The last sentence is just so strongly said, with the background music lowering to emphasize the meaning behind it...

So I've gone through every Owl City song (I think), and arranged them from my favorite to least favorite, divided into 7 tiers: Bad, Meh, Okay, Good, Great, Awesome, and PERFECTION. This song was ranked second out of all his songs, in the PERFECTION tier.
That was year he was disbanded he still had his group but i think he thought of this song as one of his last ways to leave a final mark in music history

I will share the video from last night that I took of Owl City opening his show in Atlanta with this song which blew everyone away....it was so amazing. It was one of those rare times when the live song was even better than the recorded version if you can imagine. I always liked this song but now I love it...
well some fans were unpset with the drastic change in sound from Adam, The Mid Summer station went in more of a pop direction in comparison to his previous work
This song makes me think of a protagonist that's been through shit in a world that faces destruction(or already has and the protag. wants to fix it) and against all odds pulls through but not unscathed.
