Want to know what it is ACTUALLY like owning a freeze-drying business as a side hustle while working full-time and balancing a regular lifestyle? Here is a raw vlog of my daily/weekly routine of owning my business in Idaho. In this video episode, I share how I got started, why I started a freeze-drying company, what is required when you have your business on top of a full-time job, and what it takes to keep going each year.
When I started my freeze-dried business (www.freezedrieddepot.com) in 2020, I had no idea how much time commitment it would require or whether the time I put into the company would be worth continuing for the money it brought in. This channel was created to help you become more informed about the freeze-drying industry, and how to work smarter using tools and resources that can make you more efficient which can bring you more money...faster!
The freeze-drying industry is expected to grow exponentially over the next 5-7 years to over $70 billion worldwide. What piece of the pie are you taking?
Are you starting to look at starting a freeze-dried business? Watch this video for the 10 steps I would take if I were starting a freeze-dried business from scratch: • 10 STEPS For A Success...
Here are several freeze-dryers I use in my business and I would recommend considering them for your existing freeze-dried business or just starting out.
- Harvest Right Freeze Dryers - affiliates.har...
- StayFresh Freeze Dry - stayfreshfreez...
I use Zazzle to buy stamps, business cards, flyers, and more for my freeze-dried business. There are always great discounts each month and fast shipping.

Buy a couple of Blink security cameras and aim them at the FD screen and you can check with your phone anytime you want to see where your cycles are at.

We found that for our slow Selling (i.e. sugar free, high oil, speciality, etc...) candies by packaging the them in windowed bags for retail, with moisture absorbers. Then we load those into a much larger long term storage bag with an oxygen Absorber for up to a few months. We've been doing this for several months now, and it seems to work really well for us. It also means we have to do some labeling as we process them for orders. But thats minor compared to losing the other inventory. Also, we will sacrifice one bag prior to selling the candy, so we can be sure everything is still like it should be. BTW, I'm retired now, but I have had a few businesses over the years. You hit directly on some of the top aspects to owning a successful business. 1. Know your market. Learn what you need to know before you start the business. 2. Have a plan. A real well researched plan. 3. Be realistic about how the money will have to be spent and made. I strongly urge taking an online class on running a small business. 4. Be well educated on the taxes, fees, inspections, and deadlines.... and ALWAYS make them priority. I've known so many people fail at owning a business because they love the work, but ignore or procrastinate doing the paperwork. No paper trail, no proof your telling the truth on your taxes and fees. You don't get paid by selling the product. You get paid by processing that sale. BTW, Great job. I've been following you from the start. Thank you for helping so many others in such a cutthroat industry as small business. Congrats on your budding family.

Interesting analogy, emoji tshirts. I’ve been in the design business for 7 years and you can not sell emoji tshirts or use the word emoji in your listing without getting sued eventually or shut down. I’d be real careful with making money off of anyones “brand name” or product. Once y’all go viral long enough these corporations are going to come after you.

Enjoy all of your videos very helpful. You are my go to guy when I have a question. I have seen where a camera is placed on the freeze dryer so you can monitor the time. Just a security camera I have thought of that. I’m sure down the road an app for your FD will be available. Thanks again for your experiences that you share.😊

We are not together anymore. A partnership can be a great way to setup your business but I'd advise not splitting it 50/50, always have someone with a majority. If you'd like more detail or have a broader discussion, I offer consulting sessions. Email me at david@freezedrieddepot.com

3:48 " he or she doesn't own the rights to the picture" and probably isnt paying licensing fees either, making this copyright infringement. freeze drying might bear similar risks if you use brand candy names, instead of generic ones... maybe worth to consult a lawyer, cuz i certainly ain't qualified to judge.

Emoji's are copyrightable but are rarely enforceable which is why you can sell a shirt that has the thumbs emoji: www.wipo.int/wipo_magazine/en/2018/03/article_0006.html#:~:text=Copyright%20considerations,presumptively%20copyrightable%20as%20graphical%20images. Regarding branded candy, absolutely they are copyrighted and protected and if you infringe on their copyright they will come after you.

@@freezedriedbusiness you only have to differ 30% to the original to be considered as smth. "new" or "different", but finding out where that line is drawn, can quickly get expensive. the original smiley is a good example. the designer sold the design for 45$, to a company to make buttons for their employees. and some other random dude bought a ton of these buttons and resold them, found out that it has no copyright claim attached, claimed it himsself, and got filthy rich... But try to resell stuff with knock-off nintendo characters and I am almost willing to bet this shit will end up at court. "Copyright" quickly devovles into a disgusting cesspit. There is even folks around that slap folks with false copyright claim, in an effort to extort small sums from folks that really can't afford adequate juristic representation...

How much do you make per hour? I see you work really hard and want to know it-f it is worth the time investment :)
@freezedriedbusiness
@freezedriedbusiness Год назад
That is a great question, I don't log all my hours working in the business but I do pay myself for certain areas of labor within food prep. If you were doing this a side-hustle with several shows/markets throughout the year and some local online sales, I'd estimate you could make $5k-$10k. Unwrapping, cutting, storing, packaging candy is 90% off all candy so the people you see who are freeze-drying candy as a business are doing a lot of labor but the margins currently are very high.

You mentioned vegetables.. that’s what I do. There are a lot of farmers and farmers markets near me. I buy the ripe food that won’t make it to their next sale then I freeze dry it and sell it back to them- they then can use it to make the little dip packets or whatever. Also vegetables seem to sell better with descriptions- no salt added, lightly salted or ranch. At first people are like eww vegetables. Then they see no salt added and then the wife will say you were supposed to be working on that- and then they buy a bag

I presume your commercial kitchen is a kitchen share situation where others share that space as well? How does that work with the dryers? Did you get special approval to leave the equipment there when you aren't using it?
@freezedriedbusiness
@freezedriedbusiness Год назад
I currently don't share but I've had a space that was shared and it's something you can negotiate with the kitchen. Usually it's really not big of an issue and your rent covers the electricity and leaving your machine there, then you'l likely get charged on an hourly rate for when you are preparing food etc.

I really enjoy your channel! My husband and I are in the retail licensing process of getting our business started. Sadly, we need licensing and a commercial kitchen here in Wisconsin to do any sort of retail sales of freeze dried food! We are also going to be talking to our family friends to see if we can use their commercial kitchen in their cafe!
@freezedriedbusiness
@freezedriedbusiness 10 месяцев назад
That's a great alternative than having the expense of financing a leased space. It gives you flexibility and less risk to drive up sales and build a consistent wholesale vendor list.

Thank you for your love of Freeze Drying, and to help others 🙏. I live in Santa Clarita California. Also, I currently have my machine operating in my garage, and would need to rerun the dedicated 20 amp circuit to the kitchen if I were to attempt to apply as a cottage kitchen facility.
