Yep, Miatas are fantastic daily drivers. Can have a lot of fun in them without getting into jail-level speeds, and you won't break the bank with your gas bills (although all but the ND still use more gas than you would think, even in stock form. I (daily) drive my NC at ~25mpg). And honestly, for getting to the office and back, or getting groceries in the evening, you don't need the space of an SUV, van or station. The MX-5's boot (and/or passenger seat) provide ample space for that. Plus nothing's more refreshing after a long day at work than just popping the roof and enjoying the wind in you hair and the sun on your skin (it's also better than any cup of coffee in the morning). …can you tell I love mine? ;D
haha smiles for miles mate. I picked up a 2003 MX 5 in silver and originally intended to go the supercharger route but ended up having the rocketeer conversion done so now she has a 3.0 Jaguar V6 lump under the lid. Lovely cars, seriously underrated, heaps and heaps of fun.
Great vid! I used to laugh at these cars till I drove (and then bought) a factory-turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX5. I can't believe how great these cars are to drive. As Jeremy Clarkson said "I'm giving it 5 stars 'cause I can't give it fourteen!" Very addicting.
+David Jones thats awesome! they did such a good job, you must of had so much fin in this car! it has really made me start to look at buying my own one haha
Mine is pretty much stock power, but the handling is well sorted. On really tight twisty roads I've kept up with cars that have over triple the power. I'd love a supercharger, just too broke right now. One day...
Great review video! I also have a m45 miata, but mine has got pop up headlights :) But real quick, there is no twin scroll supercharger, there are twin SCREW superchargers. However the eaton m45/mp45 are ROOTS blowers, not twin screws. Just as a FYI. cheers
210 bhp is what, about 185 at the rear wheels? Mine makes 220 at the wheels, or about 245 bhp. It's a fact, a Miata with forced induction is a real hoot to drive. When you consider the car weighs in the neighborhood of 2300-2500 pounds, depending on model year, 200+ whp puts you into a power-to-weight class with Camaros and Mustangs, but with a good suspension, you can out pace them on a crooked road easily.
I saw few videos of you, this one is your best definately, the expresion on your face says it all :D Ive got something similar to the miata, ive got an mr2 spyder with a k24a3 swap and about 250hp naturaly aspired :)
i'd personally build an NA in a similar manner and invest in a fastback hard top and a proper sleepymod set of headlights (switching to smaller rectangular sealed beam lamps)
+ Not sure about the one in the video, but mine has a Rotrex centrifugal making 14 psi, and 330cc injectors. It's not even as big as a cantaloupe, but more than doubles the engine's output.
Jamie , now you understand , I can drive any car I choose . my daily driver is a clean meticulously sorted , stock appearing 1995 MX-5 . Cheers Mate ! Frank from across the pond .
+Jamie_FYD it crashes around on anything but a newly laid road, ride quality is very much like being pushed down a hill in a mining cart. But you forget about all that when you first come to a fast corner- the steering feel is immense! The NAs aren't that fast in a straight line but if you are small like me, the car weighs under 900kg wet and the 20-50 performance is pretty startling when stringing bends together. The turbo is a different story though!
+muistje3 unfortunately i don't mate, its not too low in person so your still able to get over speed bums and stuff, but still sits perfect on the wheels
Nice review mate. I agree, I don't think I could have an N/A mx5. it'd have to be turbo/supercharged. Would be interesting to see you review a turbo mx5 now :-)
