In this video i talk about owning an old classic Mercedes The w108 and w109 specifically and why not to be afraid of owning a Classic Mercedes. There's so much enjoyment to be had from keeping these wonderful incredibly engineered cars on the Road, where they belong.

Enjoying your 108/109 posts. I owned a 109 300SEL for many years here in Kenya. A daily driver then demoted to Friday’s only then sold on when it was permanently parked up. I digress, the suspension was loosing air so my Merc dealer (the only one in the country) ordered 4 new leveling valves, holy moly they cost a fortune. Turns out it was the air reservoir which had a pin hole on the top.... so I still have 4 corners all in great shape and also a drivers door electric window control (all windows + lock). Happy to sell them on at a reasonable price. In this modern world no worries getting them to you and sorting payment. Get in touch if interested.

My only grip on this for being a daily driver is that back then the A/C was an afterthought so if you live in a climate like Dallas, TX you have to have a garage for parking at work or else the heat of the day cannot be overcome by the factory air. I am a scouse that transplanted to America so I admit to liking things more on the cooler side. I never owned a 6.3 or 108 but assume they had the same implementations as the other models. I have an eidetic memory of traveling across the midwest as a boy in my father's 230e and having to keep my head between the front seats from the back just to not be so sweaty. Watching your channel has opened my eyes as to the simplicity and superior engineering that these high end jewels received. Having a lengthy perspective with MB, this might be their pinnacle of engineering in 6.3.

Totally agree. The AC systems are no where near adequate for hot locations. In my area of Northern California we do get hot days in excess of 100 degrees throughout the summer. I still drive them but its not ideal. I feel the pleasure I get from driving them daily out weighs the few downsides. Cheers John.

A Classic Mercedes as a daily driver that you don't like driving in the rain, so that's why you now live in California. That's one thing I like about seeing classics on the road in the UK it's like the first Swallow you know its Spring. You might want to check out Bilt Hamber rust protection it gets good write-ups and made in Essex, as an alternative to Waxoyl. Enjoying the videos.

I have one that i don't drive in the rain, sure. But my 4.5 i drive all year, rain, snow or sun. I know I'm lucky to be here in California. I use to live in Hertfordshire, so I know what you guys are up against. Bilt Hamber? I've never heard of that? I will check into it. When I work my way through to the floor pan, I want to protect it with something other than the rubberized coating stuff. So many horror stories. Thanks for the comments and glad your enjoying the videos.:)

@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 Daily driving a 4.5… Fantastic! I’m jealous. I daily drive a stupid leased Camry, but I get in my 500 SEC as often as possible. I’d love to daily a cool older Benz and a 1970’s 108 280 SE V8 would be near or at the top of my list. The 1995 e300 diesel is viable daily and of course and late model w123 diesel is a smart bet. One day.

@@ItsTimePictures Once all the typical maintenance things are completed, it makes a great daily driver. I don't understand why some baby these cars, they are made to drive. When the 6.3 is done, I fully intend to drive the !@#$ out of it:) Cheers John🍻

For a daily driver, there's no need to keep mechanical parts original. Upgrades are often available for less than original parts.

Great videos thanks for sharing. I recently purchased a 72 280SEL 4.5, Getting ready to refinish the door wood and you did a video on restoration but can't find it. Can you add here what materials were used to strip and refinish? Thanks. John

I'm with you, cosmetics are not a priority. Once all mechanical issues are updated, then sure. Til then, a DAILY DRIVER.

Exactly. I'm currently putting a new clutch in mine so I can keep driving it, because what's the alternative? Park it forever with a failed pressure plate? No. Not cheap at $1000 for the kit (plus labour), but worth it.

I am slightly envious . Living in CA with old Mercedes . My perfect life. I have the old Merc’s but the U.K. climate ! I drive a r129 and w126 . I bought a r231 as a daily and it less of a car than the r230 I owned before which was definitely less of a car than the r129 . I won’t buy another modern Merc as my daily

Yes, the climate is an advantage. Where i am though, we do get quite a bit of snow each year. 2500 feet elevation in the Sierra foothills. My Dad use to run a w123 240d back in the UK as a Cab driver. He absolutely loved that Car.

Thank you for posting! I was wondering what the deal is with Bullet indicator lights. I noticed they are more common on SEL, is there any source where I can find more and reliable information on this?
@mercedesmaintenance.6339
@mercedesmaintenance.6339 3 года назад
From my understanding they were on most w108s in the USA up until around 1970. My 68 280se has them. As far as more info. Have you joined our Facebook groups? Mercedes Maintenance and Mercedes Rescue. Lots of very knowledgeable members, I'm sure could answer your question.

@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 Thank you for the quick response. I was just wondering because I noticed there aren't much panels around with pre cut holes like that, only fog light mount holes, in general. I inmediately asked to become a member on both platforms, I'm currently searching for a 108 and have some options, one being more of a project than the other. Thanks again!
