Oxalic Acid Vapour treatment with ProVap110
Commercial Beekeeping Blog- October 17 2017,
Treating hives with a ProVap 110 Oxalic Acid Vapourer.
Each hive is administered 2-3 g Oxalic Acid. The ProVap is heated to 230 Celsius, treatment temperature ranges between 195-205 Celsius. The treatment takes roughly 30 seconds to administer.
The treatment targets perfect sublimation conditions which evenly disperse the OA crystals through out the hive with Vapour.

Why the temperature is so high ? OA sublimation is between 157-189 degrees Celsius. Above this temperature, oxalic acid is converted to formic acid. At your temperature, you vaporization formic acid, not oxalic acid.

Krzyżak Not exactly, consider the sublimation of the product itself, not the temp of the heating element. I would say that after observing the cluster after treatment that I have achieved perfect sublimation while maintaining a practical time period of treatment

@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog You didn't convince me :):):) but thank you for the answer. If you have the opportunity, do the test at 185C. I may be wrong, but i think you vaporization formic acid not oxalic. By the way, great chanel. Greetings from Poland

@@krzyzak3465 the temp of the material during sublimation does not necessarily cook at the temp of the bowl. Notice the rebound temp. the objective is to get it as a dust thtoughout the hives, and that is exactly what i am seeing cheers! love the feedback

@@krzyzak3465 his unit is set to 232 fahrenheit not celsius. I spoke to the N.B. beekeeper he talks to and we discussed about the problem of my 110 not stopping at preset temps. my unit loves 270f. if I recall correctly he said he runs his at aprox same temps. converted it is still just around 130c. correctly or incorrectly i'm using 3 to 4 g of OA for my double deep 10 frame equip. less for 8 framers.

@@ronreid3640 These are celsius. Look at the video description: "The ProVap is heated to 230 Celsius, treatment temperature ranges between 195-205 Celsius." And here the description on the manufacturer's website oxavap.com/product/provap-110-sidelinercommercial-vaporizer/ "The temperature is preset for 230 C. This is the correct setting for the bowl of this vaporizer."

I did the oxalic acid treatment with Varomorus 12V vaporizer. Worked as I had hoped it would. The treatment was effective. It is really a great product. Best wishes to you and your hives!

By no means am I an expert but after using the provap for awhile now I realized I don't have to time but just use the temp to tell you how long it takes. The temperature is constantly falling when it is vaporizing and climbing after it is complete. So, as soon as your temp rises, the oa is completed and you can move on to the next hive. I hope that made sense.

Is that insulation that you have on top of the brood chambers and if so, what kind is it? Btw, I am a new subscriber and I love the process in which you talk of field management and the bigger picture with regards to how beekeepers are the first to know what we are doing to the planet! I too live in a similar environment (lots of farming fields) and go through a lot of the challenges you are seeing within your hives. Great video!

Really nice video! We have a very similar machine called a sublimox, exactly the same cups etc! I only bought Mine this year but an excellent investment! Vaping is a really good method, although next year I am tempted to use a one off Amitraze treatment (post harvest) as we vape 3 times over 15 days, and it’s a lot of work! Do you only vape once?

2 grams of acid for a regular hive. Same or less for a nuke?
@Themachinewon
@Themachinewon 5 лет назад
Less for a nuke, think of it this way, 2 grams vaporized into a fog, will cover the cubic area inside the two deep hive bodies, 1 gram does the area of 1 deep hive box. So 1 gram and under would do a small nuke box.

Hello there! I'm from central Greece. Here we are doing the same or a lot of beekeepers use the chemical substance tak tik(amitraz). The thing is that I have changed my food supplies the last year and I haven't seen any kind of the varroa mites since then even if I had my hives next to other hives that had varroa inside. I think the difference came from the food. Anyone heard something similar? Greetings!
