In this video we discuss several topics related to small-scale backyard beekeeping. Please feel free to post your questions in the comments section below for consideration to be included in FAQ 23 which will post on Friday.
In this video we discuss the following topics:
1) Should samples of all honey stored by the bees be left on the hive so the bees can have their preference regarding nectar sources?
2) What is the best camera/system to use in order to monitor the bee yard and see what animals are visiting it? Here is my video about the Nature View Cam: • Closest Focusing Trail...
3) What is the purpose of the green drone frames and should I be removing all drone cells from the hives?
4) There isn't a lot of pollen in the area where I live, how can I support a modest hive without sufficient pollen? www.pollen.com/
5) Do field bees search out and bring back what the hive needs, or do they just gather whatever they find?
6) What's the difference between the Oxalic Acid Vaporizers that are either 12v DC or 110V AC? Is one better than the other? What's the best time to treat? How do I protect the honey supers and get the bees out of that part so they get treated also?
New Gear to consider - Butterfly nets for swarm collection!

I purchased the OA Vaporizer from Blythewood when you published your video several months ago. I only have 2 hives and it works great. I use a 12v portable battery charger and in 2:15 to 2:30 the OA is sublimated. I only have 1 honey super on, and I have been removing it when treating. I love your idea of a cookie sheet barrier once the bees are out of super. Keeps the vapors out without having to remove the super! Outstanding!! Thanks! 👍👍😀

Fred, I just got my 12 volt Oxalic acid vaporizer from Blythewood today! I don’t know why I’m as excited as I am as I have no signs of varoa yet. But I had been trying to order since I first saw your video on the Oxalic treatments and they’ve been out of stock for some time. But got it today! 😃 Thanks again for another great and informative video. Oh! Almost forgot, my flow frames are almost all full of honey! I was told I probably wouldn’t see honey my first year and I’m probably 2 weeks from a full capped flow super!

Carlos Murphy I am located in the Pacific Northwest near Spokane, Washington. Not as brutally temperamental weather as what Fred gets there in Pennsylvania, but winters are still darn cold. I am running two brood boxes. They have filled and capped the first 8 frame honey super that I put on for their winter stores and I have removed that and placed it in the freezer to put back on later before winter. The flow hive 2 that I have is the 6 frame flow or 8 frame Langstroth style and they have that flow super almost completely filled with nectar. I am guessing another week and a half to two weeks and it should be capped honey. Very exciting as this is my first year Beekeeping! 😃

It's me again, Fred. I feel like I'm making such trouble for you. Remember my aggressive bee problem? Today I barely cracked the inner cover/feeder - I just wanted to see if I needed to had a 2nd super on that hive as well. Nothing fumbled, didn't even get the box cracked more than 1/2" (from the back). Fortunately I was suited up - the bees came pouring out at me. I was wearing a bee jacket and gloves and jeans with rubber boots. I took about 8 stings on my legs between my jacket and the boots. Some of the bees followed about 60'. I'm loving learning about bees, and I don't mind the work involved. But this just isn't fun. Do you think I should ask at the next bee club meeting if someone experienced could come out and see what they think? Otherwise I'm tempted to just let the hives be - it's sink or swim time for them without me babying them along.

Drones also work.They heat or ventilate eggs or bees larva.Would be great if you could film that some time.
@danskisbees7348
@danskisbees7348 5 лет назад
I've always thought they played a role in raising the brood. I had drones in my hives all winter. Winter in Texas is just a series of cold fronts and then it's decent again.
@ragnarzetterberg9032
@ragnarzetterberg9032 5 лет назад
Exactly, drones release workers for other missions and also stimulate them to work harder. Drones are good!
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
I would be happy to film that is I'd ever witnessed it. I've never observed drones aiding in venting/heating/contributing inside the hive. I use thermal cameras and the heater bees have always been the female workers - by winter, the drones are of course gone. That may actually be a trait of a specific line of bees? I'll definitely be watching for that behavior. Thanks.
@ragnarzetterberg9032
@ragnarzetterberg9032 5 лет назад
Also only strong societies produce alot of drones so it is a good sign when you have many drones in your hives. It is obviously very good if they can propagate their genes to the surrounding area.

Thanks for another episode Fred. I bought the spypoint solar dark about a month ago. You can alter the sensitivity from low, normal, high in the general settings. The default is normal. My problems with this camera so far is that branch movement or maybe grass is setting the thing off continuously, even on the lowest sensitivity. I too like the idea of the solar functionality. With all my best, MK
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Thanks, yes, I do understand all of the settings and detection sensitivities. It was on the most sensitive setting. It was the trigger speed that was a little delayed. Also, with just the solar panel battery, it runs low pretty fast if you're setting it up to capture loner video segments. Mine were set for a minute and it got one good one and then in subsequent captures, the illumination went off and it captured darkness :) IF you load the battery pack and have the solar unit, the batteries are not charged by the sun but they do get everything at night. Yep, moving branches in the wind can fill your card! I'm still testing them. Thanks for commenting!

I have a question for you regarding a suggestion I've recently been given: have you ever heard of roughing up the inner wood walls of your hive bodies in order to get the bees to coat it with propolis for promotion of overall hive health & well-being due to the antibiotic/antiviral properties of propolis? It sounds like a good idea to me.

I don't think roughing up the surface is necessary as every box interior ends up coated by the bees to some level. I think they are doing just fine, also consider that roughing the unfinished interior will make it prone to moisture absorption more than the smooth surface. I personally wouldn't do that. BUT, I do have rough sawn boards in my feeder shims, so it will be easy to see if that encourages a propolis coating.

Always appreciate your sense of humor Fred.. Love your Monsanto analogy! So when bees get told they don't want these resources and they go off in the hover.. what next? Do they consume those resources? or dump them off? Any thoughts on the Veroa strips and their effectiveness? Thanks as always Fred!

I don't like the varroa strips as they have pretty strict temperature application tolerances annnnd can do a lot of damage if things really heat up. - I'm sticking with OA since it never kills the bees and is effective in all temps. Remember also that my bees are already hygienic and varroa resistant so my situation may be very different.

Hello Mr. Dunn. I built a horizontal hive last Fall from insulated steel panels.(old garage door). It is based on a Layens foundation frame, (13 inches by 16 inches deep), so is deeper than a Langstroth deep. I was curious if a steel hive would work with feral bees. Fast forward to this year. The number of swarm traps that I caught feral bees this year: 0. However I caught a "hive" in my beehive with lemon grass oil & Swarm Commander last week! I guess "if you build it, they will come"...lol...I have 14 Layens frames per side, (28 total), so I can expand my hive if needed. The local beekeepers in my area, Central Arkansas, have mentioned "bearding" in our heat already. I have none perhaps due to my insulation. (1.5 inches thick). Perhaps you would consider a video on a Horizontal hive instead of a Langstroth type hive? The reason that I went with this type hive is, I can no longer move Vertical supers easily. Old age is not my friend! lol...If you think this would be feasible, then Dr. Leo's website might be of interest. (horizontal hives.com). Thank you for your videos, they sure help with my learning journey. P.S. The girls are starting to bring in pollen now! :-)
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
HI Clayton, we've talked about horizontal hives around here quite a bit and I do see an advantage for those who can't lift and for those not using the bees for commercial ventures. I would be concerned about the steel or aluminum clad insulated door panels simply because the metal conducts heat/cold where wood doesn't I don't know if I will get to that this year, but may construct something over winter for testing in 2020. Thank you for watching and for commenting! :) All the best to you there in Arkansas!
@claytoneads6842

Thanks for the video! Regarding swarm season, would it be practical/effective to have empty hives set up nearby to encourage a closer relocation or will bees travel wherever they please before they're collected?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
The bees have a mind of their own, BUT, I've had swarms move into empty hives right in my apiary before. A 10 frame deep with a single entrance partnered with some cotton ball soaked with swarm commander inside a zip lock baggie and placed high in the back of the hive seems to be the most attractive setup in the apiary. And now that I've said that, they really do go where they please, but you can get a small percentage to follow your lead to some degree.

Fred, great video...thank you. Quick question - when you first started with your Flow Hives, were the bees reluctant to start working the FH - i.e., building honey in them? I have several FH units and the bees are not taking to them readily yet.... FH says give it more time, but I am wondering what your experience has been. Also, I assume you do not have a queen excluder between the 2nd box and the FH unit...yes?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Phillip, please check out my FlowHive Experience Playlist... when I put the first flow super on a colony, they did nothing with the flow-frames and I "thought" it was a fail - then I moved the flow super onto an adjacent colony and they filled it right away. It became clear that not all of my bee colonies were quick to accept the flow-frames while others went straight to work. It remains a puzzle. Now that I have several years with Flow-Supers, I save them until the colonies show their productivity and I place flow-supers only on the most populated hives. Works swimmingly. I do still have one colony that just never builds up enough for that. In this video, I show the good and the bad - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZU45d-_o6IY.html

Great information Mr. Dunn, One of our hives (flow hive 2, 8 frame) we did foundationless brood boxes (all 16 deep frames). The bees kept the comb nice and straight but we did notice they drew out a lot of drone comb. Will each of those drone cells always be a drone cell as it cycles throughout the year? I've been meaning to track it myself but, it is usually not on the priority list when we open up the hive(: (first year beekeeping and learning everyday)
@danskisbees7348

That's great! If the bees didn't need drones, they wouldn't make them. I imagine that there will always be drone cells unless they back fill it with honey, just like worker cells. They'll probably go back and forth between stores and brood.

I have heard that bees very rarely swarm the first year, and I have added additional boxes for them. Next year, if my population remains stable or increases, how do I prevent swarming if I don't want to make a split or manage another hive? Do I give away a certain portion of bees? HI Keith, lots of people spent so much time trying to prevent swarming. If the colony is healthy and the environment provides well, expect the bees to swarm, even when you have done everything right - expanding, enough ventilation, good location etc... :) I like your attitude of simply giving away a certain portion of bees - you do get a new queen out of the deal :)

Dear Frederick I saw 4 dead bees with wings shrivelled outside the front of the hive...... This I assumes varroa without me seeing any ! I have looked at your several You Tube Videos on the excellent advice re the Oxalic acid treatment by vaporization. I saw very little evidence the vaporization was prolific enough. I had made my own copper tube heater but I've ordered on that is a little metal rectangular unit in a handle and is 12 volt. Mt home mad one was 110 with a heater band. The heat definitely was exactly as designated but no hotter. My Oxalic acid seemed from the day it came damp! The powder crystals are flowable and not clumping. What is you experience please re the powder? Is it powder or what I would say is free flowing paste. I see many others have issues re the fact that the Oxalic acid is Hydroscopic. I handle Potassium Hydroxide flakes but have not had a problem with damp. Due to it being cheap I wonder if I should buy new dry powdered oxalic acid? The new implement comes tomorrow so I can give it a test in atmosphere. I see some experts here in the UK only have particle and Mist filters. I paid good money for Honeywell organic acid gas filters which I feel is more suitable. Your video seemed to produce plenty of vapor. University of Sussex UK says in research they used up 1.25 to 4 gram of powder per hive! Other info says 1/8th of a teaspoon. I wish the info was more exacting? bets Wishes and thanks Mick

If you go to betterbee.com and check in on the instructions regarding Oxalic Acid, you'll see the approved OA, as well as the approved dosage for your hives. These are American approved dosages and Api-Bioxal, so in other countries there may be variables. With the Api-Bioxal, I've enver had it clump at all and it's kept in foil envelopes.

I then pulled and put in four five frame nukes with at least 1-2 frames of brood , nectar and honey and open frame. After 24 hours introduced a mated queen in a container for them to eat into and except as their queen. After four days the queen cage was empty in each nuke. It has now been 10 days and I checked my nukes. Only one has larva. The other three had no larva or queen found. Any suggestions or thoughts as to what I did wrong.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
My advice to you John is to continue waiting - BUT, if when you made your nucs for new colonies, you didn't shake enough nurse bees, there wouldn't be enough to protect the eggs the "mated queens" would be laying and there just may not be enough for that to work. You're going down a reproductive path that I don't use personally. There is a RU-vidr name Dave and he owns Barnyard Bees - I would consider him to be very well practiced in making these smaller nucleus colonies. I don't work with colonies smaller than 8 frames with at least 3 lbs of workers added with each new Queen.

What are your thoughts on the super DFM Probotics for bees ? And have you heard of a product called Candipolline Gold?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
As with many other vitamin and booster products, I haven't been able to get any scientific data on the projected benefits to the bees. It's a spring and fall booster (claimed by those selling the product) - we really need larger scale quantifiable scientific testing to support the claims. For now, it's not something I feel my bees need as I live in an environment that provides plenty. BUT - my mind is certainly open on the subject and I'm happy to read any University or DOA Studies that have drawn some meaningful conclusions.

So i am new to bee keeping so i wanted to ask, do bees have any reservations about storing nectar (and honey) into the drone frames? In my mind i am thinking about ratios. There is the same amount of space on a drone frame as a normal one, but less cells, so less wax walls, so the ratio of honey to wax would have more honey technically. I want to know if someone had a frame full of honey from a drone frame would you potentially get a little bit more honey out of that frame then a normal one
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
When it gets down to it, bees will eventually store nectar in large and small cells without much preference. As for gaining more honey per-frame, probably, as for gaining more honey overall? probably not much difference that a normal hive would demonstrate.
@danieltaylor8113
@danieltaylor8113 5 лет назад
@@FrederickDunn do you think that because the drone frames should in my theory take less wax to draw out, because they have to make less cells, that the bees would waste less time and energy on building wax and draw the box out sooner? Meaning start storing sooner by a couple days? This has been a bad year for bees in my part of Germany where i am stationed (according to the bee club here... i am clueless, bad year or good year because its my first year) so if bees could potentially start storing sooner that would be helpful for them vs spending the extra time just drawing out the cells

@FrederickDunn

Only when a colony is showing evidence of mite load stress. I did 3 treatments in the spring which were 7 days apart. Near the end of this week, if the weather cooperates, I will be doing a mite count and go from there. Some of my colonies show no mite stress while others can be quite loaded and appear unable to cope with them. For example, my observation hive colony shows no mite issues which indicates that they are handling them fine on their own. I expect to have to treat all colonies at the end of summer.

Sydney, where you are located will determine how much honey you will need to leave on the hive for their winter survival. You should call your county agricultural extention agent for local information, if he doesn't know, he can probably get you in touch with a local beekeeper. I believe Fred places supers on top of his flow hives for the bees winter stores, once they have filled them up, then he puts his flow frames on for his harvest.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Sydney, I have an entire play list of Flow-Hive videos - I always let them build up their deep brood box, then partially fill at least a medium super and then... I put the flow-super on. It doesn't matter if they are a first year colony as the intermediate box is what you leave on for wintering.

You should get rid of them to save your wooden structures in my opinion! They did extraordinarily damage to my chicken coops and bee-observatory structures... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wgWF0sIW9OM.html

As long as they are not eating your home or wooden deck I would say leave them. I have 2 carpenter bee nests in my wooden well house and they are only active for like 2 months April and May. I would not say it is enough to cause competition in resources though. You have far more other native bee species that take more than they do. So you shouldn't base your decision on competition with honey bees only if they are doing structural damage to something you value.

Mr. Dunn, you mentioned you use the Eneloop batteries in your cameras. A long time ago I got my hands on 4 of those and they were great! I couldn't find the batteries any where. I have 2 left, but I want more of them. I hear another company took the over and I haven't seen those batteries for sale for a long time. @@FrederickDunn Thanks, how long does it take for your eneloops to charge? Back in the day my eneloops took just 20 minutes! That was awesome because I could be more impromptu with my camera. Before and now I'd have to wait 8 flippin hours for batteries to charge (Duracell and Energizer AAs). That's a bummer when a photo opportunity happens. It would be cool if they could charge in the car as you drive some where too, but I don't know if any battery company has that option. Eneloops were great, but I don't know how they preform since Panasonic took them over. I used to have to get them on Amazon. They were really new to the market at the time and I went out on a limb and took a chance and ordered 4 bats and their charger. I loved them! They lasted forever in the camera, far longer than Duracell or Energizer. I could leave the camera hanging around for weeks on end, then suddenly need it and the batteries didn't discharge at all while just sitting there all that time. The camera had plenty of energy.

@@SpiritBear12 The charging time frame is related to how depleted they are - I use the Panasonic chargers and have a pile of pre-charged batteries ready to go. Do mated Queens only make once in their life span
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Pepper - at times a young virgin queen may get all she needs (many successful matings) in a single flight assuming there are enough drones out and about at the congregation area to accomplish that. BUT- on occasion, queens have been observed making several mating flights/attempts - returning with the remnants of the final mating still attached. DNA testing has been performed on the contents of the spermatheca noting 15 or more drone contributors. Do they begin laying and then after a few months or weeks do another mating flight series? Not that I know of.
