Here’s a fascinating segment of debate between John Lennox and Richard Dawkins on Science and God. The full debate can be accessed on RU-vid with the title, "Has Science Buried God?" Tune in...
This video is divided into three parts, intelligently responded by Dr. John Lennox.
1. Why Doesn't God Simply Forgive Everyone?
2. What is the Evidence for God?
3. Why does God care about sin?
About John Lennox
John Carson Lennox (born 7 November 1943) is a Northern Irish mathematician, bioethicist, and Christian. He has written many books on religion, ethics, the relationship between science and faith (like his books, Has Science Buried God and Can Science Explain Everything), and has had public debates with atheists including Richard Dawkins (this video is one of them) and Christopher Hitchens. (Wikipedia)
About Richard Dawkins
Richard Dawkins (born 26 March 1941) is a British evolutionary biologist and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was Professor for Public Understanding of Science in the University of Oxford from 1995 to 2008. His 1976 book The Selfish Gene popularised the gene-centred view of evolution, as well as coining the term meme. Dawkins has won several academic and writing awards. (wikipedia)
The video is fully scripted and edited by Naga Seminarian channel.

@@Western-Supremacist no, they are being comforted by lies. Atheism is a crutch to avoid moral accountability ( they think they are accountable just to themselves). Deep down it gives freedom to follow your own heart. This will mean doing good to your fellow man and being free to follow most impulses. What a safe feeling delusion this is! Jesus said they hide from the light for fear their deeds will be exposed. We've all done things we're afraid of that God will find out. Deep down this reality drives us to hide but a day will come when it's all brought into the light. Hide in Christ while there is still time! He has the power to forgive sins. This isn't a fairytale or story to control you. It's the final truth. Ask God right now to save you.

Why can't he simply forgive them?" Lennox never gives an adequate response. This world is a centrifuge, God wants to separate those who will truly follow him to those who wont. God is very visible to those who follow him and we see his actions and miracles almost daily, however to the unbelieving he seems not visible. I conclude by this, God does not lower his standards in regards to what he wants. People who love truth , justice, righteousness and forgiveness. Many times Jesus made claims that made many of his disciples leave him. He wanted everyone to follow him but it was too hard for them as it is now for anyone, including us Christians. We have to choose him over many other things and people everyday. With the expectation to fully know him one day.

I don’t understand how Christians can claim that somebody else taking the punishment for your transgressions is justice. It’s quite literally the opposite. The analogy commonly used is that you have a friend who’s a judge and you’ve committed some egregious crime, we’ll say murder. The judge gives you the harshest punishment possible, yet because he loves you he makes he makes his son, who may be the willing scapegoat, suffer the punishment for your crimes. Who’s to say I’m not going to go on a murder again? I never received any punishment whatsoever, and I’m not any more likely to not murder in the future. I don’t understand why christ dying on the cross is seen as a just and loving act. Taking someone who is 100% innocent to atone for the sins of guilty makes no moral or logical sense. Not to mention the punishment we are threatened with is eternal torment and suffering for finite transgressions.

It’s because it’s not really just for us. It’s merciful. Justice is hell. Mercy properly defined is loosening the binds of justice. Christ’s action was merciful. Though justice was still fulfilled because God, an omnipotent creature, can be the only one to satisfy the large pain of sin.
@commentsedited

It's wrong for Christians to believe that. Because it's not what is written. Repentance is the only way to salvation. No one may atone the sin of another man. You should probably look at the Jewish idea of God. Not Christianity.
@stephenking4170
@stephenking4170 6 месяцев назад
So you can stand before God and say that you are sinless, that you have never failed your conscience, that you have fully respected God? Good luck with that one. When one needs mercy, it is the mercy giver who decides on what basis it is given. Could God have chosen another way? Was there a more effective way to communicate his love to people of all civilisations, cultures? Our ways are not God's ways, our thoughts are not His. He is God. We are ants. Our current transient life on earth is a privilege and a trial. The real life is the future one, eternal. Is hell literal flames? The bible does not say so. But as a metaphor for eternal intense regret, it suffices, just as the worm that never dies. Both metaphors are used and both can't be literal.

 Hi! I believe in God. The main 2 reason: 1. Personal experience: I felt God, He loves me, saved me, He helps me living my life. It is proving for me but of course if you do not believe my word it doesnt count for you as an evidence. But there are millions in the world like me. 2. Logical arguments suggest me that the world with God have more sense than the world without God. I do not have evidence for the existence of God, but logically there must be a Mind and Force who did this universe. If you see a book, you know there is an author. There is no book without author. But inside the book there is no author. I see DNA as a book therefore this sign of intelligence indicates the existence of a writer, some kind of God (the Force and Mind). If the world would be all and anly chaos than it wouldnt point out Gods existence as Someone who brings Order. As if i see a forest with the trees that are all planted in order, I suppose someone planted it purposefully because that is the way of things. But a tree is already a complex order. A tree is not just atoms, it is a living plant because of the order it has. It is a created universe because it is functioning by laws. You cannot find the author in the book the author is way more then the book. But the world points out to God as a book. If there is enything existing, there must be an uncoused first cause (God) creating order, or the things existing must be all chaotic. If there is no God than there is no obejtice good and evil. You cannot say that Hitler was wrong. Natural selection is the force atheists believe. But the natural selection was what Hitler did: death for the weak ones. Because if you are able to eliminate an entire race and religion (like jews) they were weak. Rape is not bad in a Godless worldview because nature already uses it, than why not people? Death is permamaent, so everything is useless. I say Hitler , Stalin and Mao were evil. I say rape is bad. God created us and God lives in us like Holy Spirit. God died for every person, so our value are eternal high. I cannot harm a person so value that God Himself suffered for him. I must love everybody. Without God I couldnt base these sentences because why is my morality as a person would be any better and more relevant than Hitler's morality. There are miracles in the world, that cannot be science. If you want to know more than look up to Father Pio or Faustina Kowalska. Miracles are all around the world and these miracles could also be evidence for God. If you want to know the TRUTH then search these, you will find strange things. If you want to strengthen your belief you can also do it but i prefer seeking the truth. I wouldnt be able to fully and happily function in a Godless World. I believe that Hell is the place that lacks God. I want morality, i want to be a good person, i want eternal life. Most importantly i seek God's eternal love (I believe to be heaven). God bless you!

@@csakegyismeretlen "If a person lives his life in love, what prevents him from becoming a Christian?" Why become a Christian? Christians believe in very strange things, such as that the sacrifice of a historical figure who most likely never intended to be what they later made him out to be "saved" them, whatever they mean by that. I think Christians follow a confused ideology developed over time by so-called theologians, which in some aspects has little to do with love and is more like hocus pocus (the word hocus pocus even comes from the magic spell "hoc est corpus meus ..." with which the priests believe in the Eucharist to actually transform the bread and wine into the flesh and blood of Jesus). It is based on archaic sacrificial cults whose purpose was to appease gods. In fact, it is always about believing that you can somehow influence the fate to which you otherwise would feel nolens volens subject. This can calm fear.

To entertain the concept of a higher than ultimate level of justice is a failure to understand the concept. Whether someone would be satisfied with ultimate justice generally depends on whether that person is ultimately guilty. It’s safe to say that offenders are often more satisfied when they don’t receive justice. Are they stronger because they are satisfied with less than ultimate justice? Crime victims are generally unsatisfied when their offender doesn’t receive justice. Would the victim be more satisfied under a system where the offender received ultimate justice? I think most would. Does that make the victim weaker for preferring ultimate justice? Would the victim be stronger for being satisfied with injustice? Do you really believe you’re a stronger person for being satisfied that people are being victimized and never finding justice? What an absurd outlook LOL! Because any decent person should experience some level of disappointment at injustice. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” If it can happen to anyone else, it can happen to you. Sometimes Prof. Dawkins’s view that the mundanities of everyday human life and behaviour are beneath the level of a god who might be acceptable to someone with a lofty view of the universe such as he has comes across as his being unwilling to accept that there could be a Creator who condescends to the creation in the proper sense of meeting us at our own level rather than sticking to His proper sphere. This strikes me as Richard Dawkins betraying his class origins and reminds me of the scene in Jesus Christ Superstar where two people say that they would have loved to have Christ round for tea if only He had followed the usual social conventions and contacted them ahead of time.

As a Muslim l have the same question about forgiveness as Richard.. It makes no sense at all
@cassiecaradoc2070
@cassiecaradoc2070 10 месяцев назад
God is three things: Loving, Merciful, and Just. I know Christianity and Islam agree on, at the very least, the last two and I'm pretty sure they agree on the first as well. When God created us in his own image, he created us to love, just as he loves. We cannot love without a will... it is not love to obey if we have no option to disobey, and we don't really have the option to disobey if we are not capable of exercising that option. God is also Merciful. When we disobey, God grants us forgiveness. He knows we cannot be perfectly in line with his will if we still have our own free will, or else we could not choose to disobey. Because we cannot be perfect, and because he loves us, he must be the one to bridge the gap. He must be the one to forgive us. We can't forgive ourselves, because it is not ourselves we transgressed, but rather against God that we transgressed. Thus, only he can forgive us. But God is also Just. God cannot simply forgive, or there is no penalty for sin. If there is no penalty for sin, there is no point to sin. Obedience becomes meaningless, and his will is no longer sovereign, it is simply ignorable. So for God to be Loving, Merciful, and Just simultaneously, he must: 1. Allow Sin, because not allowing Sin would be forcing us to love him, which is not love at all. 2. Forgive Sin, because allowing imperfect creatures the option to Sin, then demanding perfect Justice would be to sentence all of his creation to death. 3. Demand Justice, because if there is no penalty for Sin, there is no penalty for acting against his will, meaning he is no longer sovereign. How does he unite these things? By sending his son, Jesus, an aspect of himself made flesh. Jesus came to us to understand us as one of us, and show us his love and personal interest in us. Jesus forgave our sins to show us his Mercy, because it was against him that we had transgressed, so only he could give that forgiveness. He must be the bridge, because we cannot be. Lastly, Jesus died for us, because the price of Sin must still be paid or Justice cannot be satisfied, and because again, he must be the bridge, because we cannot be. But importantly, he also rose from the dead, because God cannot die. He suffered death, both spiritual and physical, but death, like life, is also his creation and cannot hold him. His death was not for his benefit, but for ours. It showed us that our sins had a cost, but that he was willing to pay it. It showed us that there are still terms to his forgiveness... very loose terms, but still terms: we must accept his forgiveness as he offered it to us, no more, no less, no option B. And it showed us the depth of his love, that he was willing to become like us, live like us, and die like us in order to bridge the gap so we can be with him. It showed us that he is, truly, a Loving, Merciful, and Just God.

If we have free will, why would He then punish us? If His will be done, instead of ours, what is left of free will? He loves us unconditionally, so there is nothing we could do that would anger Him. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. 2 Timothy 3:1-4 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. The unbelievers still don't get it; they are living in a paradox. They want to leave the Creator out of HIS creation but because they don't believe they are going to be out of the creation. The same applies to the one who believes in natural evolution, the Big Bang, and the atheists. In the Bible, our Holy Father not only tell us how much HE love us, but He reveals to us the truth about HIS creation like Dr. Lennox said. The spiritual being is the primary realm and we flesh are the secondary realm. Because we are in the secondary realm, in the Bible GOD is given us the instructions to evolve to that primary realm. What they don't like is that GOD is in control of evolution, they don't understand that the secondary realm is not eternal.

It's not so much that we want to "leave the creator out of his creation". It's simply that we have no idea who/what that creator is. If the question is: "why does anything exist?", the correct answer is: "we don't know". We know about the BB, but we don't know what caused it, what was going on before it, etc. And what religionists do, is simply make something up. I presume this is because they're not happy with "we don't know" as the answer. And saying "in the bible god is given us the instructions...". That's most likely wrong. The probability that a collection of books, written 2k-2.7k years ago, by mostly unknown authors, are actually the word of god is close to zero. There are many books discussing gods and monsters, and as far as we know they're just myth. It's fascinating how say, christians, will think the bible is special, but all other religious books "nonsense". They're all nonsense; it's obvious.

That in itself is a speck in our galaxy. There are an estimated 200 billion other galaxies out there. It seems if it is true(evolution) then that is a form of evidence for a higher power(s). Secondly, which answers that question, is that you cannot form a society from scratch with the viewpoint that all morals are just opinion. The best you could do is try and argue cause and effect for moral standards, but it still gives no foundation without an assumption of truth at the root. What is the root? The root is that life has value and meaning, and if it doesnt no actions matter in the slightest. The root is not you give meaning and value, the root is you have meaning and value to even be able to give it. There would only be cause and effect if it wasnt true: How can you make an argument with no foundation? You cant. So when you get down to it, you cant say this is moral this is not, and you happen to already live in a society with a foundation of truth. You just deviate away from that foundation while also borrowing from it. Any of your opinions about morality are founded on what society has learned through thousands of years, and you base your opinion off that amount of information, yet you fail to realize that your own opinion has no foundation of truth to begin with, which defeats your own argument.

Whenever a judge judges a suspect, the suspect either needs to pay a fine or serve jail time to satisfy the justice that the law wants. In God's case, the wages of sin is death. And God's justice demands us to pay the price. That's the reason why animal offerings in Old Testament is important since it substitutes our lives to the price of sin we need to pay to God. However, it's not complete since we still sin, so we need to sacrifice everytime we do so. So in order to complete God's justice, someone needs to pay the price of sin, which is us since everyone is guilty of sin. This is where Jesus is important since He has no sin, so He is the perfect sacrifice that will satisfy God's justice. This is what separates Jesus' sacrifice compared to the animal sacrifices that Jews in OT do.

Lennex lacks some catechism here, the reason Jesus had to be crucified was because of how it fits symbolically with the tradition and history of the Hebrews, Israelites, and Jews. Jesus did things in very specific ways so that he could be recognized for who he is by anyone who really knew and understood the scriptures. And then further, the crucifixion also teaches a lot about how to do the liturgy and how to live our lives so that we can bring more grace into the world. Further, there is the issue of the covenant that God had with the Hebrew, Israelite, and then Jewish bloodline…. Understanding how the covenant works and it’s purpose is crucial. This is the answer he should have given to Dawkin’s objections about why Jesus had to die for our sins….

What do you think God has to "answer for"?
@joeturner9219
@joeturner9219 10 месяцев назад
The thing is, no one can "prove God" just like no one can "disprove" God. God is FAR above our finite brains and His Ways are higher than ours. We can't "figure out" God. All of our measly "logical thinking" and arguments can't even scratch the surface of God. God has provided more than enough evidence through His creation, through science, through history and through morality. It's just that some people are too stubborn to acknowledge it as God and are willfully ignorant. Atheists just don't like to accept the truth and don't like the idea of a just and moral God that will one day hold them accountable for their actions. Instead, they like to come up with their own ways of "explaining" the big questions in life. Such as "Why do we exist"? "What is the origin of life?" "Where did the first singularity and particle of matter come from?" "Where did energy come from?" Science can't even explain what caused its own "big bang" theory to happen in the first place. Evolution may be able to explain what happens when you HAVE life, but it can't explain how life actually BEGAN in the first place. Being an Atheist DOES requires faith. There are so many big questions left unanswered by science. Science, as wonderful and powerful as it is, simply cannot and will never be able to fully explain everything. You're expecting God to reveal Himself to YOU? Not gonna happen. It doesn't work that way. You seek after HIM. That's how it works. God is not obligated to reveal Himself to anyone. But there is a promise. If you truly seek Him with a sincere, honest and pure heart, He WILL reveal Himself to you. See, true Christians aren't Christians because of blind faith or intellectual belief. True Christians are Christians because they sought after God with all of their heart. Wanting to love Him. To know Him. To serve Him. To submit everything to Him 100%. That's why we have a relationship with Him. Because He revealed Himself to us. I think the issue with most Atheists (not all but most) isn't a "lack of evidence" thing. I think the main issue is because they don't WANT God to exist. They simply don't WANT to submit to God if He is real. That would mean they would have to give up a lot of the things they are doing that is wrong. Let me ask you a question, if Christianity was true, would you be a Christian? If God were to appear to you in front of your face in a dramatic bolt of lighting and said "I'm God. I exist. Here I am." What would you do with that intellectual belief? Would you sincerely be willing to give up your sins and your way of living for God's Ways? To serve Him and love Him for the rest of your life? Or would your attitude be like "Wow. I was wrong. You really do exist God." Then just go on with your life and operate as if He doesn't exist? If your response would be the second option, then by no means is God going to reveal Himself to you. He doesn't care about someone's intellectual belief. He wants your HEART. He wants a RELATIONSHIP.

John shld have talked abt the reason why God created us with free will aka the reason for existence. It is because that is the only way love can exist. With free will people can choose to love or not to love. Without free will, the concept of love would not exist. If u were a parent and u had a choice to create ur child to be perfectly programmed to do anything u wanted versus a child who had his own free will to love u back despite all the suffering and conflict, who would u choose? God chose the latter because thats the ONLY way we can experience what love is. I wish I could have a conversation about this with Richard. I respect the man, and i wish he could hear this one day, to finally understand that he exists to experience what true love is.
@hongotedesco8931
@hongotedesco8931 10 месяцев назад
Well, firstly, we don't really know whether or not we have free will. Science is looking at this, and it all boils down to understanding consciousness, which at this point we don't understand. Secondly, we don't need a god for any of this. When you say "God chose the latter...", you're just making something up. We have zero evidence for god, much less what he thinks, what he wants, what he "chose"...

That's a rather harsh way of living life with such a perspective. And judging by ur aggressive tone of accusing me of making things up aka lying, im not surprised. By all means live the life u want, take a high ground and claim others are lying if they are not aligned with u but please consider what if u are wrong and if there is a Creator that did make us because of love , what would that mean for u? Both schools of thought are unable to prove 100% the evidence of the origins of life, we have to make a judgement call. U do urs, others will do theirs. @@SiNNEi2 "The basis of free will is choices. U have the power of choice now.". It certainly *appears* that way, but as mentioned, there are some quarters that say we might not have free will. On the other hand, there are some quarters that say we do. But at this point, we can't conclude one way or the other. "I might argue it takes more faith for you to partake in the notion that there's no such thing as a creator and we are all a random event...". And I might argue the opposite (with a caveat). So far, everything we have observed about how the universe works since the BB is due to natural processes. Think about it, that's pretty fascinating. Just consider, we started as single-celled microscopic bacteria, and evolved into us today. That's just a fact. And because that did happen (ie, we have precedent), I tend to lean towards naturalistic explanations for understanding the universe (ie, if we don't know something *today*, like origin of life, we will likely discover a naturalistic explanation for it *tomorrow*). As to the caveat....we do know the universe had a beginning, ie, it was created. But who/how? The correct answer is "we don't know". I'll grant that we do have a creator (C). The thing is, we have no idea what C looks like, what are the attributes of C. The only thing we know about C is "C created at least one universe". It could be an infinite, dumb ether that spawns universes from time to time, a 15 yr old hacker in an encapsulating universe that wrote some code, or the god described by Muhammad in the Koran. But the reality is, whatever we conjecture is simply made up, because there is no evidence for any of these Cs. And apologies if you think I was calling you a "liar". I really wasn't, I was simply pointing out the common thing that a lot of religionists do, they just assume things: "god did this, god wants this", etc, etc. That is exactly what you did, but I wouldn't call it a "lie", just simple misguidedness.

@@hongotedesco8931 We all have free wills to make choices. Can u not now? As I surmised, neither of us and none of us knows the origins of life, the point is u have to make a judgement call on which school of belief u partake in which then, it has a HUGE impact on the way you live. I choose God's love as a purpose of creation as I know the fruits of such a choice. Let's look at man-caused global warming. I believe that's happening. If tomorrow, the climatologists said "oops! we got it wrong! it's not man-made!", then that's what I'd believe.
