Oxventure D&D: Wyrdwood | Chapter 2: Rootbound 

Robin and Morvin is like Chauncey and hyde

God, they are nailing the creepy tone so far. The music, the sound effects, Johnny's narration, it's all adding up to keep me on edge. And the very real feeling of Consequences on the horizon.

I love Morvin's interplay with the exhaustion mechanic. It adds great narrative flavor and reinforces the tension between the two identities.

Gotta hand it to Johnny, they've really hit it out of the park with this setting because folk horror stuff like this is what I find more terrifying than almost anything

I feel like everyone missed Andy's joke about the barbarian bakers god's name Crumb that was hands down the highlight of the episode for me 😂

I had expected an hour-long episode after the two-hour premier. If they're all 90+ minutes, they're spoiling us.

Johnny nailing the folk horror vibes as a GM and sending shivers down my spine: "We're simple people", "Pass this note to Happen", and "What's your passive perception"

Johnny: mentions on their insta that they were particularly proud of this episode. Me: immediately 110% invested!

Ellen decides to play an evil character. Creates an old school Tory.

Andy's completely normal character is pretty uniquely normal.

Assumed Wyrdwood would be a cosy time and watched as I dozed off. This episode really turned up the folk horror and while absolutely brilliant, it was not in fact a cosy time 😂

Every time Luke says "Web" as his spell I cant help but think back to Mom Can't Cook episode "Up, up and away" where they talk at length about Spiderman passive-aggressively "webbing" into a carpet 😂

That part with the rabbit really creeped me out at the end! Loving the horror vibe of this series and how everyone balances taking the story seriously, while still having the odd joke. Can't wait for next week!

I love that there are 3 acolytes in this party and they are all so wildly different.

This is one of the best actual plays in town. You guys are NAILING a very new genre and vibe straight out of the gate.

Johnny is absolutely incredible at the unsettling horror vibe and also the very upsetting creepy stuff like the seed in the mouth.

Johnny's killing it with the amount of detail provided for the horror storytelling. Juuuuuuust enough to tell you what's probably going on (did I hear blood sacrifice?) without being overt. Love, love, love this new season and it's seriousness. Will not lie, I'm kind of hoping for a character death. Would really really hammer the new vibe home

I didn’t think I would get attached to this crew so quick. But I did. Gosh I’m loving this. The horror vibes are peak.

I'm so excited about this series. And I can't wait for the first envelope...

I feel like, sooner or later, Morven’s gonna get herself a proper witchy dress and Robin’s gonna be confused as hell.

It's awesome how the atmosphere can be so dark and foreboding, while we still get to enjoy the silly moments of chaos and comedy from each person (both in and out of character). Deadlands had a similar vibe of organic flow between comedy and horror. Deadlands seemed memorable (to me) mainly because of the exceptional characters Andy created, and how they interacted with the players. So far Wyrdwood feels memorable due to the uncertainty and mystery on many levels. While in Deadlands I was mainly eager for the showdowns with awesome baddies, in Wyrdwood I feel like we're all being taken on a journey and I'm fascinated with where it will take us.

Ahhh, I see our aberrant friend is still awake. How delightful, I cannot wait for this episode.

Superb episode. Best since first season, for me. Great atmosphere, great role playing. Hats off to Andy in particular and, of course, Johnny.

Johnny sounded like such a teacher with the note and Luke when he put it down “READ it”

Finally properly focused watched Chapter 1, real good stuff! I really like what Andy is doing with Robin, my hope and kind of expectation is that the commoner will develop into a surprisingly capable adventurer in his own right, get a subtle dynamic going where going all sorcerer on thing often turns out worse than the frail alternative. In general I like what they have picked for themselves. Luke has a cool gimmick to riff off of, Ellen taking a page out of Barnaby's book and evolving it, and I think Mike has really set himself up to have the kind of story-driven role Eggbert somewhat randomly evolved into.

Ooh, I already love the consequences for Morven refusing to sleep. I mean, 48 hours with no sleep is well beyond the point of when hallucinations and such start happening for humans in the real world. Oakburn is giving me weird vibes. They're too happy and welcoming and it's very unsettling to me. Ah good, glad everyone else was equally unnerved by the people. Johnny's doing great with this atmosphere and the NPCs. I also love Willowfine talking to Morven like she's a toddler in need of a nap. I was guessing constitution saving throw when Johnny passed Happen that note. Ooh, Hungry Hadar is back! I love Johnny having to restrain themself from making stuff canon. My knowledge of D&D is honestly still rather limited compared to people who actually play the game and who've spent a decent amount of time playing BG3, but I've played enough BG3 to recognize magic missile and how good it is. Johnny managed to make me feel creeped out by the tree and then sad about the tree dying. Good job. I got legit chills from the shadow rabbit. I did immediately think of the shadow people of Shadow of the Erdtree, I'll admit that.

Loving Andy's whole Sukuna thing he's got going on.

Last episode i wondered if wild magic sorcerers would be like “nothing has changed” Now I’m somewhat expecting a village of them towards the end of the campaign worrying why their magic ISN’T going wrong. 😂

Everyone's improved as a roleplayer over the years, but I think this series is showing off how much Johnny has improved as a DM, too. Not to suggest they weren't great before, but you can tell they're really getting to flex their muscles and try stuff out now.

Great episode! [spoilers] The thing with the seed was so unsettling! It really reminded me of the Thorian in Mass Effect.

Jhonny is outdoing themselves in this campaign. So many flavourful moments with the narration and the events. A bodysnatcher enemy right onto the second episode? The stakes sure are high!

I present to you, The Diary of Rue: Still early spring. We've been on the road east for a few days now. Me, Rue Whitebloom, the only other female in our group, Elaina Silversend, Marcus Tannenbaum, Tyrus Hill, and Keith Ledger. Everyone has sort of gone about and made themselves useful. Tyrus is amazing with his bow, and he and I often return from short hunting trips with quite the catch. Elaina is a musician, and quite a decent cook. Keith and Marcus have sort of taken leadership of the group. Not that everyone doesn't have a say. Their voices are usually the last. Marcus wants a sense of unity for the group, so before we left, he handed everyone a journal and had those of us who didn't have any fitted for armor. I'm not used to walking around in such heavy boots. We came across a small village with a bell tower earlier today. Nice enough people. Small, wooden and tile buildings, and a pair of rivers surrounding the town. As such, most of the buildings were built high, with the doors being on the second floor. A merchant explained that every so often, when heavy rains would flood the two rivers, which would flood the town, the alarm bell would sound, and everyone was to remain inside. As we began to ask around about disturbances with magic, we learned that for quite some time now, the amount of fish that the fishermen catch each day, (how they feed the town, we gathered) has been dwindling. What once was enough to feed the town of maybe 200 people is now barely enough to feed half that amount. We offered to look into it as soon as we could, and yet as we were selling off extra rabbit meat and some herbal medicine that I've been making from herbs I've been picking up along our trip, some drunk young man bumped into me. I thought nothing of it at first, but as I went to sleep in the inn, I went to pray to the Land. But I couldn't. My Amulet was gone. I always wear it on my waist, and as I was looking around, with Elaina helping me, that's when I realized. That drunk man stole it from me. He probably wasn't even drunk! So, I woke the men, and the five of us asked around. It seems like that man was just a traveler, for he'd only been here for a few days more than us. I had to use some magic to talk to the cats and birds, but eventually, Tyrus and I found him. Turns out he was a thief, and had meant to take my coinpurse, but took my amulet instead. Tyrus roughed him up pretty good, but eventually the man ran away. That amulet was a gift from my Ma, and helped me focus on my druidic nature spells. And now, it was gone. Or so I thought. Tyrus, having gone blow to blow with the theif, now having a black eye and a bloody nose, had somehow gotten my amulet back. When, he didn't say. Maybe it was when the two were rolling around on the pavement? He also had the thief's own coinpurse...and his belt? Excitement out of the way, we start searching for clues about why the rivers are losing fish in the morning. We have no idea how to even begin to find out why magic is all wonky, but we can help these people, at least. -Rue Whitebloom

I love the new setting, the new characters and the debts mechanic! I cannot overstate my joy or how much I am looking forward to this fantastic new story you all are about to weave for us. Between waiting for my adult D&D group to pick up again and the student D&D club I am starting to advise to start this is filling my D&D void and I hope to take some inspiration back to both the students and my friends when we start playing.

The horror vibes in this were soooooo well done by all loving this new series

I absolutely loved the bit where only Johnny and Luke knew what Luke was rolling for after Happen put food in his mouth. I was so excited to find out what the terrible consequences were - and I was not disappointed. Super creepy!

Damn this was such a good one! And I really admire that you're consistently able to fit a whole adventure into less than 2 hours without it feeling rushed!!

I got whiplash coming from Geth to Wyrdwood. How is this the same group of players? The dynamic feels so different, and the atmosphere is so much more serious!

I love love LOVE this new Oxventure. The vibes are immaculate and Jonny is doing an incredible job to ratchet the creepiness up at every opportunity. It feels like everyone is on point with the rules and Andy in particular is absolutely owning being a Sorcerer. If the first Oxventure was an exercise in learning the rules and just having fun, this is experts getting stuck into a real dark situation. I cannot wait to see how it all plays out. Especially now Luke has mechanics to explain the low rolls and isn't just derailing everything by roleplaying being the dumbest character alive ( I love Dob but at least Happen has an excuse for screwing up)

Imagine if they manage to go the entire campaign without triggering debt, or if Mike is the only one to trigger it.

I really like how different these characters are from their oxventure and personalities are. Cant wait for next week!

I'm sure it's fine and normal that parts of this episode gave me weirdly strong déjà vu. Kudos to the lot of you for delivering such a delightfully eerie experience.

I'm really enjoying Wyrdwood so far. It's such a nice dark weave of mysteries.

Aaw Robin, it's never a good day when you find out you're host to an angy spirit.

I love all the characters and story so far, but most of all Happen and his homebrew Cadance dice! Whenever he's like "Phrase Cadance!" I'm always questioning whether it's technically a "good" 20 roll of a "bad" 1 roll, though neither of those matter to him as long as he as his faith and a result! Love all the characters so far, not much into horror normally but this is great so far!

1:38:54 a translucent shadow rabbit was in my nightmares as a child. It was one of very first nightmares I remember. I woke up and could still see it, and I was paralyzed with fear. With that description Johnny gave it would probably be a bit more scary and personal than other people who haven't seen a paralyze inducing translucent shadow bunny that can turn you into a ghost in their nightmares and paralysis demon upon waking up.

They feel heavier than they are because the weight is concentrated at the head away from your arms, but a wood axe would be 2.5lbs - 3lbs even splitting mauls ("axes" intended to split wood) are under 10lbs and would be somewhere between 6lbs and 8lbs.
