I don't think they're out classed anymore. I tried his setup and it could not keep up with the supply flowing through the line. I had water that was a mix of a couple different things. It kept pumping away every other packet of liquid instead of every packet. So it would have needed many runs to actually be filtered out.

I recently came across your vids as I just started playing after having owned the game for years but never playing more than 15 mins. Firstly, love your vids dude, inspirational in a few ways. Kudos. My thing is, after watching multiple vids and staring a few times over again with info , from my point of view at least, I can see everything done far more efficiently by doing the (more or less) exact opposite. I find it odd, wanted to mention. i.e. Rather than wasting resources pumping in oxygen (or focusing on), I would just firstly extract ALL gasses into a central location, lower, allowing them to self separate. Because physics. Same theory can be applied over multiple densities of matter, was curious on your thoughts. And thanks again for the awesome vids, just a little low in volume is my worst critique. *Edit: I missed the 'other' from "ALL other gasses", as is, your filtering in what you want, and extracting anything else to allow for 'self separation', which it obviously seems you need at a later point anyway. Apologies for missing that, it makes what I said unclear.

i noticed it's been a year since you made this and your description has been lacking of late, so i figure i'd help out with the tedium of chapters 00:00 - flow direction 10:20 - distribution 15:00 - storage 22:15 - pipe types 25:00 - processing 34:00 - bathrooms note: at the 36 minute mark i get another 'eureka' moment as Magnet connects a pipe to the green icon of a bridge and talks about prioritizing that input before the input going into the white icon of the bridge...which makes his "reverse" piping system for the storage make a little more sense now. At this point i'm starting to think that the entire concept of the 'bridge' is so counter intuitive that Klei really should have warned us n00bs this game is actually supposed to be called "bridge documentation not included" note: at the 38 minute mark Magnet digresses into temperature management using a refinery. yeah, fu Magnet, now i know why you didn't do chapters for this, mr A.D.D. 47:00 - gas management note: at the 53 minute mark i get another epiphany as Magnet demonstrates a gas vent placed directing on a line of pipe, hooked up to automation, that acts as a mini-filter...which is really annoying because it reminds me of the constant n00b mistake i make caused by the visual aesthetics of the actual gas filter - i keep thinking that gold output icon is venting directly out into the atmosphere. 55:55 - shutoff valves note: basically, this section is about temperature management concepts with practical lessons about how useful a particular "flushing" method using particular automation units helps maximize the benefits of using shutoff valves 01:10:10 - practical demonstration

I'm noticing my pipes turning yellow over time in the piping overlay and they aren't radiant pipes. I have a feeling that they might have something to do with the liquids inside sitting for a long time. Is that the case? and if so how do I prevent liquids from sitting or keep liquids moving when structures like the lavatory or sinks can only take in so much water? Could I perhaps design some automation to only send liquid to the structure when it's internal storage falls below a certain amount? Would the game let you do that? Thanks!

Are the gas filters you use to filter the gas at the bottom of your "base" 100% reliable? I would have thought that with the sensor and the shutoff on different tiles some gases that you didn't want might slip through occasionally. Is there any reason to ever use gas filters? Does the same work with liquid pipes?
@Magnet_MD
@Magnet_MD 3 года назад
The sensors and shutoffs on different tiles are reliable, as long as you can assure your pipes NEVER get backed up. In the case of gasses, if the end of the pipe leads into space, I'll always be able to vent there because the gas will be lost to space, so those filtration systems are always reliable. The same thing does work for liquid, but that is more difficult to assure you'll have constant flow on all pipes, considering it's not common to vent liquids into space, and because you'll need a considerable amount of storage space for different types of liquids to assure constant flow on all pipes. The gas/liquid filter buildings can be used, but they use a tremendous amount of power by comparison (literally exponentially more if you use multiple of them). I think you're best off by using the more low-power solutions and assuring you have constant flow within the system.

Great vid as always! I'll admit I'm still confused by liquid storage. I see folk use them but they always just have water flow in and straight out again. What's the point of them when liquid just flows straight through them? Are they just used as a back up for when whatever your piping to is full and then they start backing up into storage instead? I've also seen some folk pipe them so the pipe goes into the first white, and then out of the first green, which then leads into the second white, out of second green, into third green etc etc etc. Is there a difference between doing that the straight across piping you do? Sorry for the dumb dumb question. I'm grasping so much of the game, but for some reason the simplest storage thing got me like ??????? I was trying to do a chlorine room with 3 storage tanks but I've still not got plastic for a germ sensor so I thought I could maybe make a manual switch on the shut off and check it myself after a few cycles. Can't seem to find out how many germs are in the liquid when it's in the pipes or storage tanks though. Unless I'm missing something :|a
@Magnet_MD
@Magnet_MD 3 года назад
Hey hey! Yeah, the liquid storage is effectively an overflow for if your pipes are backed up. It will look funny when you first start putting liquids in them, but they are very useful both for automation purposes (you can enable/disable stuff when containers meet a certain fill level), and as a buffer to make sure you are harvesting and storing the water that may come intermittently from vents and stuff. And yes, you're correct, you can't start making germ sensors until you create plastic. You can also consider cooling the water until germs are killed, or you can feed the germy water to plants, use it for bathrooms and for research tasks.
@Spamhard
@Spamhard 3 года назад
@@Magnet_MD Thanks again for the help! Yeah, I've just been using a tepidizer to heat the germs out for now. I was worried about the energy sink initially but now I have more coal than I know what to do with anyway. Just need to find a way to cool it, whiiiich I should probably be able to do in the next 20 cycles or so if I can harvest this cool slush geyser soon. Although maybe I should hold off seeing as I currently have no use for water and no place for it to go- beyond a small loop for bathrooms, crazy as that sounds. Got reservoirs full of it. With oxygen production starting to struggle vs my 8 dupes (altho I have no intention to expand any time soon), and a good amount of water, I wonder if it might be worth getting an electrolyzer system set up. But I still haven't gotten to oil yet! So much to do, lol. I keep getting sidetracked.
@timetravelsmurf
@timetravelsmurf 3 года назад
@@Spamhard You can save the energy you use heating the germs out with the tepidizer and cooling it again if you add a room with 4+ liquid storages and fill the bottom 2 tiles with chlorine gas (or the whole room and seal it). The chlorine kills germs at an incredible speed. Your excess water can either be spaced or: freeze it in a cool box (aquatuner with some liquid that freezes far below 0°C). That way you´ll never run out of water, oxigen and hydrogen) Just add some automated shipping into your ice box to retrieve the ice at a later point.
@Spamhard
@Spamhard 3 года назад
@@timetravelsmurf I did actually try a chlorine room at one point (couple of tanks in a small room I'd vaccuumed and then filled with chlorine, but because I didn't have plastic at the time for the germ sensor, I was struggling a little with the system as it was still dumping out germy water even when I tried to hold it in the tanks for a little bit. There was no real way for me to see if the water still had germs without dumping it out (sucks we can't see germ count in storage/pipes tbh). I'll have to go back to that idea now, thanks! Tepidizer is the sole reason I got so much hot water atm, but thankfully the water stays under about 60ish still so i can still run it through the electrolizer without issue. I definitely gotta go back and try out some new stuff out, I've yet to even touch aquatuner but I've seen some interesting steam turbine type builds that utilise them so I might have to give it a go :D

@Magnet so splitting a pipe using a bridge is different than just splitting with another pipe. The latter shares the flow while the former takes everything unless the pipe is blocked. huh so after a good nap, my brain kind of put 1 + 3 together and got this idea: (1) green to green supercedes all others (2) green to white supercedes white to white (3) white to white is subordinate to all others
@Keventor
@Keventor 2 года назад
Naa. The white input is "stealing" all the liquid from the pipe. But if the bridge is clogged it can't "steal" anymore because it's already full

@KernelFault
@KernelFault 3 года назад
If your base is well designed, the long commutes message is a good thing. Many of your tasks should be automated, such as supplying ranches, moving meat and eggs, filling grills and food storage, filling refineries, filling generators, etc. Once you base is established, you can build a dup gym. That is high priority treadmills attached to lights blocked in by a door that only certain dupes can enter. Once a dup spawns, give them a tic of research and raise their operating priority to very high and allow them into the gym. While in the gym, they will earn skill points and increase their agility and machinery abilities. After a while you will have a dup with 10+ in both abilities as well as 3 to 5 skill points. This type of dup will very quickly run up to a refinery prefilled with ingredients and preform the task in less than half the time. Then they will run off to do some other prd-optimized task. You can't help getting the long communtes message.

Great video, thanks for some new ideas! But why don´t you just cool the steam turbines with their own excess water? It comes out at 95°C and a steel turbine can handle that amount of heat. That saves energy and you do not need the automation and some piping. Again: Thank you for the effort and input!
@Magnet_MD
@Magnet_MD 3 года назад
I'll need to play around with this, I've seen it before but I have seen setups eventually fail due to being unable to cool everything. It may be dependent on how hot/cold the steam is. I'll test it :)
@Magnet_MD
@Magnet_MD 3 года назад
Oh, also, one of the reasons I give the same advice for any cooling scenario is so a new player only needs to learn one concept and not need to learn a few for different scenarios.
@KernelFault
@KernelFault 3 года назад
I have done that very thing with some mixed results. It works great until it doesn't. If the turbines overheat they stop working. If they stop working, heat is not deleted. Everything gets warmer and your turbines get further and further away from deleting heat. Usually, I do not have a cooling near where I am taming a volcano while I am setting it up. So I initially build the turbine dump directly below the turbine exhaust. I then loop some radiant pipe behind the turbine. If it works, great, I'll leave it alone. If it overheats, I replace the looping radiant pipe with a pipe doing strait down into the dump. I then put in an external cooling loop behind the turbine.

Yeah, sorry, I mentioned it very briefly. It's so the reservoirs get filled in order, and so I have a way to tell how much water I have among the entire group.
