An oxygen sensor slow response or low activity trouble code is almost always a faulty oxygen sensor. There are a few other things to consider before replacing the oxygen sensor. Exhaust leaks upstream or very near the oxygen sensor as well as oxygen sensor heater circuit malfunctions can also set this code.
Engine Performance Diagnostics chapter 5
Symptoms
- check engine light (P0134)
- poor gas mileage
- rough idle
- runs fine intermittently
Fix
- replace faulty oxygen sensor
Tests shown
- scan data O2 analysis

I had a similar issue on my wife's Suzuki Vitara a few weeks ago. She called after a 100 mile trip saying the fuel mileage was low (did not tell me CEL was on!) I scanned the car and had a Bank 1 Sensor 1 Low Activity code BUT I had replaced both up stream sensors last year (faulty heater in one). Both upstream sensors when graphed appeared to be functioning properly but the Bank 1 downstream was nearly dead, only a blip here and there. I reset the code and ordered both downstream sensors, a week later when I went to replace the sensors I scanned it and noticed I had the Bank 1 upstream low activity code again. I replaced both downstream sensors (does not seem to make sense to replace one when they have both been in there for 120K miles) and that fixed the issue. It still seems strange to me that the PCM was setting a false code for the upstream sensor when the downstream was bad.

Maybe they messed up labling the wires to the software writing on the PCM at the factory

Maybe the computer just compares the 2 and isn't accurate enough to determine which sensor it is.

Would I be correct in replacing the sensor, if I have similar voltage readings on the same bank, but no code for the o2 at all? I'm working on a 2002 Xterra SE Supercharged, and the computer is limiting boost once it reaches closed loop. No other codes, new knock sensor. The only oddity in the data is that one front o2 sensor reading. Fuel trim on that bank is also always roughly -5% more than the other bank as well. I'm no mechanic, just a DIY'er with a a bluetooth odb2 adapter and a smartphone.

After watching this video, I"m still confused about one thing. Can you please shed some light on this. When manufacturers changed from oxygen sensors to air/fuel ratio sensors, is it safe to assume that we are ONLY talking about the upstream sensor and NOT the downstream sensor? That sensor should still a normal oxygen sensor. Please comfirm. Thanks Steve
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 7 лет назад
Yes, when they use an upstream AF sensor the downstream is just a regular narrow band O2

Got a quick question for you: I have O2 sensor B1S1 slow response. My car (2006 Kia Sportage) runs on LPG. Should I measure the sensor on petrol or LPG or does it not matter? I figure it doesn't matter since the LPG system is supposed to fool the car's sensors in to thinking it is running on petrol. Either way, I've measured on both and the measurements are 0.05v-0.7v. It never makes 0.8 and is way lower than 0.2. What is that telling me? Failing sensor? Or something else? I'm not a mechanic, but love learning from your videos, so thanks for doing them!

very good and simple video. I have a question. can you explain what the other tabs that you didn't click on mean? I see there is one that says heater, that's part of the 02 sensor this you have to replace the sensor as well ?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 7 лет назад
Every car is different on what they show data wise. We call the data PIDs. (parameter identification) Without watching the video, I don't remember for sure but if it said heater, this can be an on/off, a duty cycle command, a milliamp draw reading etc. etc. Like I said, every car if different on controls and how they monitor them and report them to the mechanic. Then there is a factory scan tool that will report differently than an aftermarket one like I was using. Hope that made sense.

How would one go about checking the heater circuit/H.C. fuse for a P0134? THNX
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
A heater circuit ode is usually caused by a bad O2 sensor. With the engine running you need to check the O2 heater circuit for a power and ground. Be aware that some of these are pulse width modulated on either the power or ground side of the heater circuit, so voltage readings will be affected by this.

Hey Paul I need help. I asked you awhile back about my 2009 Infiniti G37x being a no start which I did manage to get running again. However now I am having codes P0430 and even more reoccurring P2A00 which keeps throwing my check engine light on. I followed the FSM troubleshoot and have narrowed it down to 3 things that it could be either bad catalytic converters which I kind of doubt, a leak which I am failing to find (a weld was done on the passengers side catalytic converter bracket to get it to pass inspection, there was a leak there but it is solid now so I don't think it would be related?) Or bad upstream Air to fuel ratio sensors (the downstreams were recently replaced due to wires being opened on the sensors themselves and bad live data voltage readings on my scan tool). I am not sure where to go from here however there is one live data pid that bothers me which is A/F ADJ-B2 reading at -0.06 when hot even when pressing on the accelerator. B1 reads a constant 0 and I am unsure what Nissan means but that abbreviation or what the proper reading should be in their terms because of it. When it comes to normal terms regarding fuel trim and O2/Air Fuel Ratio sensor readings from vehicles like GM's I have no issue understanding them but I am unsure of how to read a few data pids on Nissans live data because I am unsure what they mean/are measuring. I am just assuming it is related to the code because of the A/F in the A/F ADJ-B2 abbreviation. Could you tell me what it means for certain and what it is the equivalent to in normal terms? I feel it may help me diagnose the issue. Otherwise the vehicle runs fine and the engine is perfect with 0 misfires even at it's max RPMs. I do keep on rare occasions getting a high voltage to the power steering pump code but the power steering system is operating perfectly and not losing any fluid so I was ignoring it and I doubt they are related although I could always be wrong. Injectors are new too so I know they aren't leaking but whatever the issue is does seem to be affecting gas mileage causing it to run rich but not enough to trip a code. I can't find a reliable source to tell me how to understand Nissans consult 3 software terminology. My $2000 scan tool uses an aftermarket version of the OEM software. I may send this to you on the premium site if I can in case you don't see this here since I am a student there. A breakdown of some of this weird terminology would be a lifesaver. I have to pass emissions soon and these codes will definitely cause me to fail. So far the internet has been useless and the FSM has been useless as well so I'd deeply appreciate any help you can provide. If need be I could email you screenshots of the live data off my scan tool. Thanks.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 года назад
I believe you mean P2A00? You need to address this fault FIRST! DO NOT concern yourself with the cat code until this upstream AF sensor fault is fixed. Also, this code could just be a bad AF sensor, but it could also be other things: fuel pressure, fuel injector, air intake leaks, wiring problems to that front AF sensor
@AlienBros
@AlienBros 4 года назад
@@ScannerDanner Yeah that's it sorry about that I was half asleep when I was writing that out and I wrote it wrong. I corrected it haha. I will check on the fuel pressure and the wiring and get back to you on that after I check it. Fuel injectors are brand new OEM ones with a warranty so if they are leaking that will surpise the heck out of me but but I can alway get new ones for free (I replaced them because the old ones were leaking bad and caused the oil to stink of gas which it no longer does since I changed it the day they were replaced) if they are. I had sprayed carb clean around and checked for fuel trim differences on my scan tool when I sprayed it as well and couldn't find anything and I definitely can't hear any leaks so I am at least certain it isn't an air intake leak. I will let you know what I find. Thank you.

hi, I'm on the process of changing the two front oxygen sensors on my 2003 E500 and I need your opinion regarding some info I've found online, i've copied it and I'll post it below here it is [ Replacing a failed oxygen sensor may be all that you need to do, but be aware that older catalytic converters may not play well with them. Likewise, when you change out your catalytic converter, you'll need to change out your O2 sensors.May 18, 2016]

why are you changing both front O2 sensors?

@@ScannerDanner Ok I'm gonna say a little story about this vehicle hoping that you can help me with this DIY, I've parked the car for about two and half years do to excessive battery drain, before i stopped driving it I've replaced the following, both fuel pump units ( genuine Mercedes parts) new Bosch spark plugs, I've flushed the engine coolant twice at the same time using Mercedes antifreeze, twice brake system flush using Mercedes brake fluid, new front and rear brake pads and rotors, and now after it was setting for that long I wanted to address that issue which is the issue of battery drain. I started with the alternator I removed it and took it to the alternator rebuilder shop they told me that it's good except it need a voltage regulator which I was already ordered and I did replace both batteries the main and the auxiliary I bought them from the dealer so I put everything on the car and started the engine so i can go deeper with the diagnostic regarding the battery drain but unfortunately, the engine lights came on I used my Obd2 scanner I had cylinder 1 and 2 misfiring and the engine was shaking hard, I identified the issue by disconnect the connector off each coil one by one and there was no changes in the engine then I swapped coil 2 with 6 and 3 with 7 i did the same process and noticed the difference + the misfire codes transferred to 5 and 6 cylinders so I did replace the coils and the problem was solved, 2days later the engine lights came on black smoke from the tailpipe, I scanned the car and there was a misfiring codes, I will copy them from my OBD2 Scanner as the same way as they are, here it is. P2051 MIL ON&Stored&Current Misfiring Of Cylinder 1 , damages TWC (P0301) P2050 MIL ON&Stored Misfiring , damages TWC (P0300) so i was suspecting on the fuel injectors since the car wasn't driven for a long time but what confused me is when I performed the big screwdriver test and listened to the ticking noise but they all acting the same Which made me suspect on the oxygen sensors.. I know I've been writing a lot and I hope you have time to read

Not if that cat is doing it's job. Also, they don't use wideband sensors for downstream O2s

even de-cat the car to was reprogrammed to have a good ratio air / fuel. In a test with launch creader crp129 premium the bank sensor B1S1 gives an afr from 0.99 to 1.07 at idle, and a current of -0.04 a + 0.04mA so close to 0.00mA for a good ratio! ?. the bank sensor B1S2 that gives me a lambda of 0.97 to 1.1 oscillates from 0.2 to 0.9v still idling and lambda probe at 350 ° Celsius (probably from de-cat). thanking you in advance for your help

I have a cheap $100 scan tool ..does it refresh fast enough to do a side by side on this data? Or do i need a better scanner to really see if an o2 is lazy or not
@evanwynne5293
@evanwynne5293 9 месяцев назад
Switching time on an O2 sensor is 200ms peak to peak so a basic scope should be enough to tell if it is responding slow
@macknumber9
@macknumber9 9 месяцев назад
@evanwynne5293 I don't have a scope...only a scan tool innova 5210
@macknumber9
@macknumber9 9 месяцев назад
@evanwynne5293 also out of curiosity I can see how to test upstream o2 sensors...nice testing those because there is nothing in front of it except the combustion that occurs....with downstream you have the catalytic converter in front of it and it can get tricky...can you still do the snap throttle tests for downstream o2s or do you need to feed the engine propane? My understanding is a bad cat will never register rich it will only register lean as it isn't doing its job of converting gases....so can I just feed engine propane and look for it to be rich? The upstream to me is easy like I said because there's no cat getting in the way of things...what are some methods you like to do to test between a bad downstream and a bad cat? For example diagnosing a p2096 (post catalyst fuel trim too lean)
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 9 месяцев назад
Refresh rate is not only affected by what scan tool you're using. It is also the system and whether you're using OBD2 or OEM. Lots a variables. Also with OBD2 systems if the signal is slow to change, you'll get a code for it
@evanwynne5293
@evanwynne5293 9 месяцев назад
@macknumber9 you can send it rich by driving full acceleration or send it lean by letting off the throttle and letting it go into fuel overrun rear O2 sensor should go lean as well. Most of the time that I have seen p0420 the rear sensor copied the swing of the front sensor which would indicate the cat isn't doing its job. You could also test the emissions with a gas analyser.

In a Nissan Sentra 2004 I had to replaced 02 sensor ( the code P1279 show 1 bank 1 air fuel sensor was greater than the maximum allowabe limit) the RPM were find (before) I replaced the 02 sensor. Now I can start up the engine just find when engine is cooled. But when the engine is warms up the RPM drops and when I need to restart the engine the RPM will drop to 0 and engine turn off. I get the same code P1279, I went and changed the PCV vale and still the engine will start the first time and when I truned it off and to restart the engine it has the power but the RPM drop to 0 and engine turns off. I have to push the gas pedal 3 to 4 time to get the RPM up. Please help...

Are you getting any lean codes? P0171, P0174? MAF sensor and air intake leaks after the MAF and vacuum leaks are all mentioned in the P1279 flow chart

ScannerDanner thanks for that, I have just changed an oxygen sensor my car and have monitored it on the OBD2 hand tool, it fluctuates up and down 0.2 to 0.8 mV as you would expect, but the car has developed a new issue, it misfires after cold starting, it ran well when I first replaced O2 sensor, then it developed a misfire sounds like it's running on 5 out of 6 cylinders, not sure if it's related to the new O2 sensor. My question is what does the graph of a normal running oxygen sensor look like under normal operationing, idle, start and driving conditions. It runs at idle ok, 0.8mV for 3 sec then down to 0.2 mV for 1 sec then back up to 0.8mV but when driving around is all over the place. It does not have a catalytic convertor or down stream O2.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
If you have a misfire the O2 will certainly be affected by that. If it is a cold engine only misfire, check it for a vacuum leak. Like in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h8rxpfRvHf8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3RFTS22w6tM.html

+Steve Rob I've probably spent almost as much on tools as my cars are worth over the last few years, but unlike the cars the tools will eventually pay for themselves. And it is very satisfying being able to fix things, especially after learning so much from this channel.

+Geir Tore Simonsen Glad to hear that, it's only a hunch but I think some us are quite well stocked for tools and in my situation I have friends that are techs at dealerships and I have more tools than they do. I have one friend that has been in the trade for 15 years and didn't know what an oscilloscope did until I got him watching Pauls channels. Best investment he ever made in training he tells me. Take Care Steve
